Ryan O'Neal hits on his daughter Tatum at Farrah Fawcett's funeral

“They had just put the casket in the hearse and I was watching it drive away when a beautiful blonde woman comes up and embraces me," Ryan tells Vanity Fair. "I said to her, 'You have a drink on you? You have a car?' She said, 'Daddy, it's me -- Tatum!' I was just trying to be funny with a strange Swedish woman, and it's my daughter. It's so sick."

Can someone please tell me at what point they started carding people for lighters? I went to grab lunch and wanted a cigerette and didn't have a lighter so I go into circle k to get one and they carded me. WTF??? This is the second time this has happened, I thought the first lady was just on crack or something but it happened again today. It is irritating enough to get carded for cigerettes at 36, now I have to prove I am old enough to light the fucking cigerette too?

Why don't you carry your ID with you, Loca? That confuses me.

Because I stopped carrying a purse around because all I ever need is my ID and credit card. I usually leave it in my car. It isn't that big a deal to go out to my car to get my ID but I think it is crazy to card someone for a lighter. Especially when I look old enough to be the childs mother. I also forget my ID alot in my pants pocket from when I go to a club and need it to gain entrance and then forget it in my jeans. I have broken so many that way. I also have like 4 ID's just because I lose them often and then find them after I get a new one. I need to just start carrying a purse, but I will still be pissed off when the pimply face 12 year old cards me for a lighter though. :)

Really really don't recommend letting your driver's license expire. Especially when your passport is also expired and then you realize that both your social security card and your birth certificate are buried deep in a safe deposit box a continent away.

This could pose a problem.

This is true. However, I may be hawking my ATP NY ticket to the highest bidder if I can't get some valid ID before I need to hop on a plane. And processing times are up to 60 days.

...So, anyone want a ticket?

wmgaretjax
08-10-2009, 05:44 PM
Even a temporary driver's license is valid for flying on a plane (if you have the expired one with you). If you can make it to the DMV before you should be fine.

Courtney
08-10-2009, 06:06 PM
That would be true, except that I have an expired California license, and I am now in Hawaii. So, I can renew California by mail, which is 30-60 days processing (can't do it through the online system because it's a change of address), or I can start from scratch and take the Hawaii written test to get a learner's permit and then schedule a Hawaii road test, for which there is a 3-4 week waiting list after you obtain the permit. Fail fail fail.

Courtney
08-10-2009, 06:07 PM
The good news is that it's quicker to renew an expired passport, so if worst comes to worst, I suppose I can just fly with the passport and then not rent a car.

With all of the talk about universal healthcare, the government option, torte reform, rationed health care, a lot of people are confused and scared. I am with Kaiser and have been with them for decades. They are not a bad HMO, but: I cannot walk into a Kaiser office and demand to see a certain doctor or demand to have a surgery they did not approve. If a doctor performs surgery on me and cuts off my arm when he was suppose to cut off my leg, I cannot sue him, the doctor, or the KP. In order to get the insurance you have to sign a legal document saying all legal actions will be handled by a board of arbitration and no matter what the outcome, you have to abide by it. I think a lot of health insurance plans and HMO’S it is the same, but the policy holders don’t realize it. There are so many other examples I just don’t see what all the fuss is about a government option.

On a related note: Online today Esquire asked famous chiefs what was their favorite and least favorite “fast food restaurants”. In and Out Burger received first place and Chipotle came in second. In the top 23 they also had most of the other fast food chains we all know so the article is suspect at best.

HELP, HELP ... So I find out on the radio on the way home that in my building tomorrow, about 500 feet from my little cubie, is one of the health program meetings with a congressman/woman ... I want to take a sign but it cannot have cuss words, be illegal whatever that means, something that a person can take in and not get kicked out just like that. I am asking for words/slogans, etc. I can put on the sign that either the left here thinks makes a good point, or if you are on the right, just this time help me, what on a sign would really really piss you off. I have full access to the building, so they can't keep me from going into the meeting. I guess they can kick me out of the giant room, but they can't kick me out of the building lol. I will take my camera and see if I can record at least sort of interesting vids. Last note, 90 percent of my building are republicans, 4 of the 5 big bosses are repubs, and I do work there, but I am going there with the thoughts of, humm I don't know, let's just say getting noticed ...... so i got admitted to the er yesterday for the most severe abdominal pain i have ever had. after about 8 hours and a few tests it turns out i have gall stones, one of which is blocking the exit of the gall bladder. so i got admitted to the hospital last night and had a few more tests today. i have now been waiting all day for them to operate and take it out. i have not eaten or really had anything to drink since 9am yesterday, about 30 hours ago, ugh! i am supposedly going down for surgery in a few minutes and am stressed the fuck out. think happy thoughts all!

This is part of a review about some speakers. cr****

The Ultimate is a rather large speaker--each one consists of six, seven-foot tall panels. Each Ultimate houses a total of forty 15-inch subwoofers, twenty-four 8-inch woofers, and massive arrays of 2-inch wide and 1-inch wide ribbon tweeters. All of this is for a single channel/speaker, double those numbers for stereo! A pair of Ultimates are nearly forty feet wide!

Each Ultimate speaker comes with its own power amplifiers, with an output of 31,000 watts, and the manufacturer claims the Ultimate can generate up to 146dB SPL, that's a lot louder than a jet plane taking off.

Cats are little narcistic creatures of God you know..."Meow" actually means, "Me,me,me," I think. As soon as they feel neglected and unimportant to you, or detect any competition for the #1 spot, I think they seek and destroy. This would explain your poor earphones, as well as the main power source cord to my guitar amp that my cat felt a need to eat through recently! Former U.S. presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee said Tuesday there is no room for a Palestinian state "in the middle of the Jewish homeland" and Israel should be able to build settlements wherever it wants.

"The question is should the Palestinians have a place to call their own? Yes, I have no problem with that. Should it be in the middle of the Jewish homeland? That's what I think has to be honestly assessed as virtually unrealistic."

Oh Huckabee.

This is the new formula for methamphetamine: a two-liter soda bottle, a few handfuls of cold pills and some noxious chemicals. Shake the bottle and the volatile reaction produces one of the world's most addictive drugs.

Only a few years ago, making meth required an elaborate lab — with filthy containers simmering over open flames, cans of flammable liquids and hundreds of pills. The process gave off foul odors, sometimes sparked explosions and was so hard to conceal that dealers often "cooked" their drugs in rural areas.

But now drug users are making their own meth in small batches using a faster, cheaper and much simpler method with ingredients that can be carried in a knapsack and mixed on the run. The "shake-and-bake" approach has become popular because it requires a relatively small number of pills of the decongestant pseudoephedrine — an amount easily obtained under even the toughest anti-meth laws that have been adopted across the nation to restrict large purchases of some cold medication.

"Somebody somewhere said 'Wait this requires a lot less pseudoephedrine, and I can fly under the radar,'" said Mark Woodward, spokesman for the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Control.

An Associated Press review of lab seizures and interviews with state and federal law enforcement agents found that the new method is rapidly spreading across the nation's midsection and is contributing to a spike in the number of meth cases after years of declining arrests.

The new formula does away with the clutter of typical meth labs, and it can turn the back seat of a car or a bathroom stall into a makeshift drug factory. Some addicts have even made the drug while driving.

The pills are crushed, combined with some common household chemicals and then shaken in the soda bottle. No flame is required.

Using the new formula, batches of meth are much smaller but just as dangerous as the old system, which sometimes produces powerful explosions, touches off intense fires and releases drug ingredients that must be handled as toxic waste.

"If there is any oxygen at all in the bottle, it has a propensity to make a giant fireball," said Sgt. Jason Clark of the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control. "You're not dealing with rocket scientists here anyway. If they get unlucky at all, it can have a very devastating reaction."

One little mistake, such as unscrewing the bottle cap too fast, can result in a huge blast, and police in Alabama, Oklahoma and other states have linked dozens of flash fires this year — some of them fatal — to meth manufacturing.

"Every meth recipe is dangerous, but in this one, if you don't shake it just right, you can build up too much pressure, and the container can pop," Woodward said.

When fire broke out in older labs, "it was usually on a stove in a back room or garage and people would just run, but when these things pop, you see more extreme burns because they are holding it. There are more fires and more burns because of the close proximity, whether it's on a couch or driving down the road."

After the chemical reaction, what's left is a crystalline powder that users smoke, snort or inject. They often discard the bottle, which now contains a poisonous brown and white sludge. Dozens of reports describe toxic bottles strewn along highways and rural roads in states with the worst meth problems.

The do-it-yourself method creates just enough meth for a few hits, allowing users to make their own doses instead of buying mass-produced drugs from a dealer.

"It simplified the process so much that everybody's making their own dope," said Kevin Williams, sheriff of Marion County, Ala., about 80 miles west of Birmingham. "It can be your next-door neighbor doing it. It can be one of your family members living downstairs in the basement."

A typical meth lab would normally take days to generate a full-size batch of meth, which would require a heat source and dozens, maybe hundreds, of boxes of cold pills.

But because the new method uses far less pseudoephedrine, small-time users are able to make the drug in spite of a federal law that bars customers from buying more than 9 grams — roughly 300 pills — a month.

The federal government and dozens of states adopted restrictions on pseudoephedrine in 2005, and the number of lab busts fell dramatically.

The total number of clandestine meth lab incidents reported to the Drug Enforcement Administration fell from almost 17,400 in 2003 to just 7,347 in 2006.

But the number of busts has begun to climb again, and some authorities blame the shake-and-bake method for renewing meth activity.

The AP review of 14 states found:

• At least 10 states reported increases in meth lab seizures or meth-related arrests from 2007 to 2008.

• The Mississippi State Crime Lab participated in 457 meth incidents through May 31, up from 122 for the same period a year ago — a nearly 275 percent increase.

• Several states, such as Oklahoma and Tennessee, are on pace this year to double the number of labs busted in 2008. The director of Tennessee's meth task force said the pace of lab busts in his state is projected to be about 1,300 for 2009, compared with 815 for all of 2008.

Some states lack a central database to monitor cold medicine sales, so meth cooks circumvent state laws by pill shopping in multiple cities and states — a practice known as "smurfing" that allows them to stay under restrictions placed on sales.

Traci Fruit, a special agent with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, said law enforcement officials are becoming increasingly frustrated because there's no way to tell who is buying what "unless we go from store to store ourselves and pull up the records."

Historically, rural states like Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas have been hotbeds for meth use because an important ingredient in the traditional method, anhydrous ammonia, was easily available from tanks on farms where it's used as a fertilizer. But the new formula does not need anhydrous ammonia and instead uses ammonium nitrate, a compound easily found in instant cold packs that can be purchased at any drug store.

Data from the Justice Department and the DEA data suggest the method could only be in its early stages, and "shake-and-bake" labs have recently been discovered as far north as Indiana and as far east as West Virginia.

States surveyed by the AP also included: Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Florida, Tennessee, Kansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, New Mexico, Arizona and California.

While many law enforcement agencies are just learning how to spot the new labs, other states are rushing to close loopholes in laws limiting the sale of meth ingredients.

Mississippi Sen. Sid Albritton, said that state's law — modeled after Oklahoma's — forces buyers to show identification and makes stores keep a log of cold medicine sales. But the problem in Mississippi is lack of technology to instantly log purchases in a central database.

"You have to understand going in that drugs are an evolutionary process," said Albritton, a former police detective and narcotics officer. "The day after we pass a law, they are going to look for ways to circumvent that."

Thought of you randy when i read this.

no, it was just a bullshit title change. it will take some time for me to become "the man" (aka a manager) as currently the change was to make me more of a lead of my fellow team members. they already come to me for everything though, so i don't think my manager gets that i've already been a lead for awhile. i also need to go through our company's supervisor training. i am currently hiring two project coordinators who will report to my director, but i will select them in hiring and manage their day. i recently hired on a project coordinator and have been managing her day & time, it's just that she technically reports to my director, who she didn't meet till her second day, lol.

i interviewed for an academic program analyst (analyzing academic program issues) recently, but it's a lateral move (i.e. not more money). since i'm due for a raise next month here, i'm really just using the interview to try to push my promotion to happen faster and also to get some of the bullshit accounting/purchasing stuff i do (invoices, ordering assets, etc) to someone else. i'm also using this to get network access from home (which will come if i stay), to get a decent raise and to get more choice with regard to what projects i take on. so far it's working, my director and the VPs are all trying to make changes to keep me on since i'm THE only person who knows how to do a lot of shit. i'm just worried that the stress level is only going to get worse. it's nice to have the attention of the very top level people of the company, but it's also extremely stressful and there's a LOT of responsibility with my position. we'll see how the corn goes...
