So there was a shooting at Long Beach Memorial Hospital a little while ago. This is the hospital I go to when sick. Sounds like it was a pharmacy worker who took out 2 other employees and then turned the gun on themselves. I was just at that pharmacy last week and interacted with 3-4 people there. Scary to think one of those people may have been the fucking asshole that did this and that 2 others are gone now. Sad.

This is flipped up, just wrong, and any other number of phrases I can think of: this has nothing to do with politics …. Today Rush was talking about torture and he said in effect “ we are redefining what torture is, do you know that those NOW broads were able to put into law that yelling and screaming at your wife is abuse. You should be able to yell and scream as much as you want because that is not torture “ (that is not word for word) ….. He is an ass and anyone who thinks that it is your right to go home and scream at your SO everyday and it doesn’t hurt them, is not my friend … cr****

After reading, seeing, and hearing all the things of Coachella 2009, I am a very depressed man right now.

I got sick on Wednesday, didn't get over till Sunday, if that. Friday I had two midterms till 5pm. Saturday had Traffic School and then work. Sunday on the way to Indio I got a flat. While at the fest I lost my phone.

At the same time though I am preparing for 2010 in the ways I can. Saving $, requesting time off work, and even looking forward to reworking spring 2010 class schedule.

I usually have an allergic reaction to anything resembling musical theater (and the more pretentious it is, the worse my allergies get), but I reallyreallyreally enjoyed Love. To see the Beatles' songs recontextualized this way was exciting, and made me appreciate what a unique, landmark accomplishment they are. The story and the visuals weren't distracting or annoying – although if I tried to untangle the narrative in any kind of linear fashion, I doubt it would make much sense. But I think that's sort of the point. The experience is about the music, and the feelings those amazing songs evoke. It's absolutely worth seeing.

Conversation overheard at the Cafe' at work:
Customer #1: "Chorizo, is it spicy?"
Chef: "It is Portk"
Customer #1: "But is it spicy?"
Chef: "It is Portk"
Customer #2: "Yea, it's pork!"

My pants today for some reason seem are very short and they are much darker than my socks. My shoes are darker too, so there is this bright beige contrast of my socks. I look really lame today, especially when I'm walking around.

My conversation at burger king yesterday:

“Hi I would like a regular whopper”
“Do you want cheese on the whopper?”
“No, just a regular whopper”
“Then you don’t want cheese?”
“NO, just a plain whopper”
“I also want two whopper jr”s”
“Do you want cheese on those whopper jr’s?”
“NO, I don’t want cheese on anything!!!”

I drive up to the window and give her a $20 and she gives
Me back some money that I just stash in my pocket

Her
“Hey give me back all that money I gave you too much”
“I don’t know how much you gave me and I am not just
Going to give you a handful of money”
“Well you owe me $3.45”

I pull out a dollar and slam it on the counter

“Here is a dollar. Now give me those burgers for the dollar
Or else this is not going to end very pleasantly”

As I drive off I thought of going back and telling her I
Changed my mind and did want cheese ….. grrrrrrrrr…..

edit: woot woot, just saw where A specter (R) is going to be a dem now .......

OTTAWA — A dancing cockatoo named Snowball has convinced a team of neuroscientists in California that humans aren't the only species that can boogie.

Snowball dances better than a lot of people. He bobs his head and lifts his feet to songs from Queen or the Backstreet Boys and can keep time when the music is sped up or slowed down.

Until Snowball, the ability to move in time to a beat was thought to be uniquely human, says Aniruddh Patel, who studies music and the brain at The Neurosciences Institute in San Diego and is the lead author of a paper published in the journal Current Biology.

You don't see cats, dogs or barn animals dancing, says Dr. Patel, and there is no evidence that chimps, gorillas or other nonhuman primates can either. This led some scientists to theorize that dancing, or even foot tapping in time to music, is a unique specialization of brains that evolved to recognize, produce and enjoy music

I freely admit I’m a complete fairy when it comes to heights, so there’s no number low enough to measure the odds of me ever stepping foot on the Ledge at the Sears Tower in Chicago.

…these new glass enclosures that extend 4.3 feet beyond the side of the building. Beneath peoples’ feet lies the sprawling Illinois city - 103 storeys, or 1,353 feet, below. Just an inch-and-a-half of glass separates the visitor from the street underneath. The attraction is due to open in June.

I wouldn’t care if you had guns aimed at my family six inches away. Those fuckers better start making their peace with God because I’m not going anywhere near that thing, not unless I get bone cancer or something and my life was over anyway. An inch-and-a-half of glass? Jesus that has disaster written all over it. At best I would peer over the entrance before I ran away like a little girl after a bug fell in her hair.

kitt kat
05-04-2009, 01:27 PM
So my day is sort of officially ruined. I'm stuck on how to proceed here, and I'm bad with these sort of things.

Relevant backstory:

As some of you know, I was a nanny for the past two summers/winter breaks for a family; this is the same family that took me to Paris with them this summer. When I first started working for them, the father passed away, leaving the mother to take care of the kids. Luckily, her parents were still around to help out, and I became very close to the grandmother. She and I would always talk about movies and music---she was very cultured---and she was always interested in my writing and other artistic passions. Last spring, the grandmother's cancer came back, and over the summer, her condition worsened. I just found out she passed away on April 20th and I am devistated.

So, what do I do? Obviously, I need to send a card...But I haven't been in contact with the family for a while after I dropped off the face of the Earth around Feb/March in terms of responding to people who contacted me. Do I still send a card even though I didn't return a few emails? I have now known this family for three years, so I think it's expected. Is it OK if I write a longer letter and include it in the card?

chairmenmeow47
05-04-2009, 01:30 PM
i think the card and letter are fine, the sooner the better. do it soon though, anything over a month and you may just be reminding people of things they are trying to forget. i would also keep the letter fairly brief.

and i don't know that this is relavent, but keep anything related to the job out of it. you wouldn't want them to think you were hitting them up for work or something. sorry to hear of the passing.

and you reminded me of correspondence i need to get on top of, damint.

kitt kat
05-04-2009, 10:56 PM
I just ended up writing a short letter to include in the card that retold a funny story the grandmother and I once shared with one another. I'm sure she'll appreciate it. I also was close with the grandfather as well, so I wrote him a small note inside his own card.

It's just so sad because she was quite young. I think she was either 62 or 63.

Hey Erik I see those T-Rex, gorilla metal things around Half Moon bay and also around Napa...

menikmati
05-11-2009, 03:44 PM
Yeah there's a couple around the Napa area...there's the one at that shop I posted, there's also one similar when you're going the route towards Santa Rosa...I think they're awesome, and would look awesome in my yard. I use to live close to a guy who worked on metal sculptures and he had them all over his house/yard...he made a metal tree in his front yard, a knight guarding his door, among other things....it made it sort of easy when I would give directions to my house to people, I would just tell them "turn right when you see the metal tree".
