Mothers and daughters on night out left stunned as bar tells them: 'The girls can come in but you parents are all too old'

By Daily Fail Reporter
Last updated at 2:05 PM on 02nd December 2008

A group mothers and daughters on a reunion night out were left stunned after all the parents were barred from entering a pub because they were too old.

To make matters worse, bouncers at the bar told the women their children would be allowed in because they were under the age of 35.

The party of friends, which included civil servants, teachers, bank officials, a police officer and a journalist, had met at the weekend for a meal before going on to the Leeds Courtyard Bar for a drink.

Angry Carol Borthwick, 62, who works for the Government, said: ‘We do not meet regularly so we had spent some time catching up and enjoying one another’s company.
Courtyard

‘At about 9.15pm it was decided we would move on and have a drink in the Courtyard Bar and made our way across the road.

‘On arrival we were greeted by door staff who asked us our ages. Obviously we thought they were joking and, smiling, we made to go in.’

But the spritely grandmother added: ‘We gradually realised that, far from joking, they were deadly earnest and told the mums of the group that we were too old to come in.

‘It was a freezing night and we were kept standing on the pavement hoping for an explanation.

‘They said that nobody over the age of 35 was admitted. Our daughters could come in but not the mums.

‘Earlier this year I was the right age when I celebrated my friend’s 60th there. Her age was not an issue either as she was footing a rather hefty bill.’

The group asked to speak to the manager but were met with a blank refusal, said Mrs Borthwick.

One older member simply walked in - but was speedily ordered to leave, she added.

‘A lady called Carol came out to talk to us and was very upset and apologetic but couldn’t help while the two door people stood shoulder to shoulder enjoying every moment,’ she said.

‘I have been born and raised in Leeds and I am proud of my city.

‘Yes, I am a grandma but I am still working full time, running my own home, paying my council tax and driving around in my own vehicle.

‘Like the other ladies of our group, I have never been so humiliated in my own home town.

‘Needless to say, for half of us it ruined what had started out as a wonderful evening.’

Mrs Borthwick has complained to the pub company Mitchells & Bulmers.

A spokesman said: ‘The Courtyard is enjoyed by customers of all ages. We are committed to treating our customers equally and fairly and do not tolerate discrimination in any form, whether in terms of age or otherwise.

‘We have now been contacted directly by members of the group concerned and are currently fully investigating the matter.

‘We will then contact the group directly to discuss the outcome of our investigations.’

article (http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/12/04/campbell.brown.pregnant.ticket/index.html#cnnSTCText)

Commentary: Pregnant woman asks for help, gets ticket

A pregnant woman and her husband are rushing to the hospital in the breakdown lane of a Massachusetts highway.

The story comes from the Boston Globe. Yes, the couple is going fast. Yes, they're in the breakdown lane. But the woman is in labor, there's a big traffic jam, and they're in a considerable hurry for fairly obvious reasons.

So they pull up behind a state trooper to ask for his help in getting to the hospital. Do they get his help? They do not. They get a ticket instead, for $100, and have to wait while the cop finishes the ticket he was already writing for someone else.

And after this woman in labor and her husband have been made to cool their heels and have been slapped with a $100 dollar ticket -- after all that -- the trooper tops it off by asking Jennifer Davis, the woman in question, to prove she was pregnant. Watch Campbell Brown's commentary »

According to Jennifer Davis, the trooper said, "what's under your jacket?" She said, "my belly." To which the trooper responded, "okay, let's see it." She was wearing a jacket, it seems, and so perhaps this intrepid law enforcer thought she and her husband were stealing a very large beach ball or something.

Anyway, Jennifer did make it to the hospital with time to spare, and our purpose here is not to heap scorn on the particular trooper who ticketed and slowed down and humiliated a woman while her contractions were three minutes apart. That's why we're not using his name.

Just consider this a memo to the Massachusetts State Police. You ought to check your troopers' hats. One of them is wearing one that's way too small.

that is just hilarious. i would have thrown the placenta at him.

On the way he got pulled over, he jumped out of his car and ran back towards the cop to tell him the situation, the cop freaked and drew his gun on my brother in law. He quickly explained the situation and got a police escort but it could have gone a completely different way. Thank god we weren't in Massachusetts.

NEW YORK—In what many are calling the most comprehensive study of its kind, Staten Island historians Robert Wilburn and Charles Tinsley have successfully traced the lines of the infamous Wu-Tang Clan all the way back to 1993 A.D.

The monumental undertaking, which is being hailed as a major breakthrough in the field of hip-hop genealogy, used a series of historical records—including Wu-Tang Forever, Iron Flag, and 8 Diagrams—to piece together the group's vast and intricate ancestry.

"Through our exhaustive research, we have determined not only the start of the Wu-Tang Clan's reign, but also the very moment of its legendary downfall," said Wilburn, who has authored numerous books on the House of RZA. "Indeed, we now have conclusive proof as to why all the other wannabe MCs bowed down to this dynastic force."

According to Wilburn, it took trained scholars hundreds of hours to parse out Wu-Tang's complex lineage, with experts in nearly every discipline studying the group's dope oral traditions, as well as its customary and often fresh style of dress.

There was a time when the clan could look across the Staten Island horizon and know that all of it was theirs.
"It was an immense project," said Tinsley, who coauthored the 450-page genealogical report. "For instance, it took us months to conclude that Ol' Dirty Bastard, Dirt McGirt, Big Baby Jesus, Osirus, Dirt Dog, and Peanut the Kidnapper were all the same person."

"Still, a number of exciting new discoveries were made," Tinsley continued. "We learned that RZA does in fact come from the same royal bloodline as Prince Rakim, and that Method Man, as many have suspected in the past, always holds the mic sideways when bustin'."

In all, nearly 300 descendants of the Wu-Tang Clan were identified and cataloged by the two historians, including Buddha Monk, Hook Ninja, K-Blunt, Tommy Whispers, Kryme Life, and Trife Da God.

Tinsley was quick to note, however, that the total number of Wu-Tang descendants was impossible to calculate, and could very well reach into the tens of thousands.

"While the Clan is generally associated with tales of conquest, slaughter, and 'bringing da motherfuckin' ruckus,' it must also be noted that its members were prolific lovers who expanded the empire by sowing their seed all across the country," Tinsley said. "Who knows, perhaps my very own children are direct descendants of Ghostface Killah."

Emerging from the slums of Shaolin—located near Wudang Mountain in Park Hill, Staten Island—the Wu-Tang Clan went on to form the largest contiguous rap empire of the late 20th century. The Clan flourished under the rule of RZA, who led his lyrical assassins into a number of heated freestyle battles, and introduced them to a string of new influences, including Kung Fu films and silver-age Iron Man comics.

"During its height, the Wu-Tang Clan acquired a great deal of wealth and notoriety," Wilburn said. "One need only look at Ol' Dirty Bastard's dental records to get a sense of the incredible treasures they possessed."

Despite conquering nearly 80 percent of the rap world, Wilburn said that the Clan's downfall was inevitable. Seeking even greater riches, and fueled by internal feuds, key members such as GZA, Raekwon, Masta Killa, U-God, and Inspectah Deck soon set out on their own.

This dynastic split, Wilburn claimed, is what makes the Wu-Tang Clan's lineage so hard to piece together.

"Tracing the exact origin of descendants like Lord Superb, Maddam Scheez, Free Murda, and June Lova is nearly impossible, as only a small percentage of their personal records were ever released and firsthand accounts often differ greatly," Wilburn said. "However, our greatest challenge may be that many of the artifacts from this era have been completely lost to time."

"Many believe that the location of the original 36 Chambers is buried somewhere beneath what today is the Staten Island Mall," Wilburn continued. "Unfortunately, unless that T.J. Maxx shuts down, and the mall's food court goes out of business, we may never know the truth."

"Still, one thing remains certain," Wilburn added. "The Wu-Tang Clan was nothing to fuck with."

I don't like sour items in my dessert. I like lemon/lime but it grosses me out when they sweeten it up for dessert. But in Phoenix if you go to a bar and get a glass of ice water it has to have lemon in it.

I bailed, I had a really bad day on friday with my daughter so I figured with the mood I was already in it would be a bad idea to be around people I didn't really care for. So I ended up playing poker instead, at least with that I like most of the people. I felt bad but my girl understood and in fact she was glad because she used the fact that my daughter couldn't babysit her kids as a way to get out of it herself. :)

locachica73

Well since her probation doesn't allow her to smoke she decided to go out and get drunk with her friends, she showed up to school so hungover after a night of beer pong that the school thought she was drunk. I had to leave work, pick her up, take her to drug test (which was surprisingly dirty for alcohol). 16 is going to send me to an early grave.

well she use to be an honor roll student through the 6th grade. I hold alot of the blame on myself. In a 6 month period I seperated from their step dad, sold my house, moved them into a new neighborhood away from everything they knew and then their uncle committed suicide and their dad died of a drug overdose. I tried to be their friend at the time but unfortunately I was going through my own mental issues. So now things are out of control, so I just handle every thing as it comes and hope they will see the light. But teens will be teens, with and without the things they have been through at their young ages so I guess I am a little thankful that they have only resorted to drinking and pot, not that I allow it, but I understand it.

OK I do know she has tried shrooms, but she is like me in being scared to try anything "unnatural". Her and I have a pretty open relationship so I do trust in that. But with my son, I worry alot more. He is more open to peer pressure then she is. She is pretty strong willed, which does make me happy. Low self esteem in a 16 year old girl is a killer.

No what I meant was she has tried shrooms but is scared to go beyond that, i.e. acid, X, etc. I feel the same way, although I will admit that I have tried coke, I don't quite get it other then the fact that it helps bring you down if you get too drunk/high.

And someday I do hope to try shrooms myself, but don't let my daughter know that. lol

Do it Amy. You want the Smiths more than anyone and you have a chance to ask. He will probably say no even the rumors are true. But get the nerve to ask or just make Jacob do it.

Don't worry about scary vagrants. They just want some Chaaaaange.

Dear stupid bitchy everyone,

Stop being stupid bitches.

I'm sorry about Langerado. Really I am. But, you know, whatever. Suck it up. I don't give a shit about Langerado. So far, it's only influence on my life is that it has somehow - through some astonishing process of osmosis I don't quite understand - turned the Coachella board into a nest of hyperdramatic hormonal fuckwittery the likes of which I didn't even have to deal with when I moderated a fan board about a teenage vampire show.

Also, the headliner thing wasn't ever funny.

If you're going to be stupid, at least be entertaining, informative or creative about it. Yeesh.

Gates estimated U.S. troops will be "out of cities and populated areas" by June 30.

Well I got to work and decided to go check CNN.com and come to find out someone blew up a bank and killed 2 cops and injured the police chief. WEIRD.

WOODBURN, Ore. – A bomb explosion at a bank killed both a police officer and a state bomb disposal technician, and state police do not have any suspects, officials said Saturday.

"That person is dangerous and needs to be found as soon as possible," said Oregon State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings.

The explosion occurred Friday afternoon at a West Coast Bank branch office in the agricultural town of Woodburn, which is nearly 30 miles south of Portland.

Police went to check on a telephoned bomb threat received by a Wells Fargo branch bank in the center of town and found a suspicious device, but that device was determined to be harmless. But police said the investigation there led them to the nearby West Coast office where the bomb was found.

Police wouldn't discuss a possible motive for the bombing. Hastings said he didn't know of any grudges against the West Coast Bank, a statement echoed by West Coast Bank President and CEO Robert Sznewajs.

"We're not aware of anything," Sznewajs said.

Woodburn police Capt. Tom Tennant and state Senior Trooper William Hakim, both 51, died at the scene. Tennant was a 28-year veteran of the Woodburn police department, and Hakim, a bomb technician, had been with the force for 11 years.

Woodburn police Chief Scott Russell, 46, was injured and in stable but critical condition at a Portland hospital. He has been with the police department for 20 years.

State police said the inside of the bank was extensively damaged, and a female employee was treated at a hospital and released. Another bank employee was uninjured.

Hastings declined to describe the bomb in detail but indicated it was powerful.

A bank employee found the bomb in bushes outside the bank, and it exploded after officers took it inside.

Hastings said he did not know why the officers took the bomb inside.

Police sealed the area around the bank, and it remained closed Saturday. "There's no indication of further devices," Hastings said.

Federal authorities said Saturday they were offering a $35,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.

Woodburn has a population of about 21,000 people.
