I had a dream about Coachella 2009 last night. It was more like a nightmare.
I was very anxious to get there and when I did it didn't seem the same.
There were very few people in attendance and it was being held at my old high school. The main stage was the quad. I kept walking around hoping i would stumble upon the real Coachella. I had to force myself to wake up because I knew it had to be a dream. thank god it was. whew!!!!!

The Queen Is Dead and Louder Than Bombs. These are middle Smiths -- I like early Smiths the best because of the heart-renching desperation, but Morrissey's voice is so leaden and sometimes off-key on the earliest releases (The Smiths and Meat Is Murder) that those could be off-putting at first. If you like "How Soon Is Now?" it's on Meat Is Murder.

california bailout?

LA Times (http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-calif3-2008oct03,0,5726760.story?track=rss)

Schwarzenegger to U.S.: State may need $7-billion loan

In a letter obtained by The Times, the governor warns that tight credit has dried up funds California routinely relies on and it may have to seek emergency aid within weeks.

By Marc Lifsher and Evan Halper, Los Angeles Times Staff Writers
October 3, 2008

SACRAMENTO -- California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, alarmed by the ongoing national financial crisis, warned Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson on Thursday that the state might need an emergency loan of as much as $7 billion from the federal government within weeks.

The warning comes as California is close to running out of cash to fund day-to-day government operations and is unable to access routine short-term loans that it typically relies on to remain solvent.

Letter from Schwarzenegger to PaulsonCredit crunch puts California governments in a corner Schwarzenegger slaps down workers' comp bills
Dispute imperils California family planning program for the poor
The state of California is the biggest of several governments nationwide that are being locked out of the bond market by the global credit crunch. If the state is unable to access the cash, administration officials say, payments to schools and other government entities could quickly be suspended and state employees could be laid off.

Plans by several state and local governments to borrow in recent days have been upended by the credit freeze. New Mexico was forced to put off a $500-million bond sale, Massachusetts had to pull the plug halfway into a $400-million offering, and Maine is considering canceling road projects that were to be funded with bonds.

California finance experts say they know of no time in recent history when the state has sought an emergency loan of this magnitude from the federal government. The only other such rescue was in 1975, they said, when the federal government lent New York City money to avoid bankruptcy.

"Absent a clear resolution to this financial crisis," Schwarzenegger wrote in a letter Thursday evening e-mailed to Paulson, "California and other states may be unable to obtain the necessary level of financing to maintain government operations and may be forced to turn to the federal treasury for short-term financing."

The letter, obtained by The Times, came on the eve of a vote by the House of Representatives on a $700-billion rescue package, but it was too soon to know how the package would affect the nation's paralyzed credit markets. The Senate approved the so-called rescue bill Wednesday night.

A top Schwarzenegger aide followed up the letter with a call to the Treasury secretary Thursday night. Treasury Department officials could not be reached for comment.

It's customary for California to borrow billions of dollars at the start of the fiscal year to fill its coffers until the usual flood of sales tax receipts comes in after Christmas and income tax receipts arrive in the spring.

"California is so large that our short cash-flow needs exceed the entire budget of some states," Schwarzenegger wrote.

The cash needs to be in the state's bank account by Oct. 28 to be available to fund a scheduled $3-billion payment to more than 1,000 school districts.

Said Matt David, Schwarzenegger's communications director: "California faces the potential of a perfect storm created by the financial crisis' effect on liquidity, lower-than-anticipated revenues currently coming into the state, and our late budget. The governor is taking steps to prepare for this scenario to ensure that the state can make critical payments."

But those payments won't be forthcoming if the state can't do routine borrowing. For now, "the window is shut, and if it stays shut, we are in deep trouble," said an administration official, who asked not to be identified, citing the sensitive talks with Washington.

Quick passage of the rescue bill by the House of Representatives today and a signature by President Bush could inject more money into the international financial system and allow California to borrow at a reasonable interest rate, the official said.

But there are no guarantees that the economic recovery plan before Congress will succeed, said California Treasurer Bill Lockyer, who has been working with Schwarzenegger to keep the state solvent.

Asking the federal government for a loan "is one option on the table," said Tom Dresslar, a spokesman for Lockyer. The treasurer, he added, is working with outside financial advisors on a possible emergency plan to sell short-term debt notes to the U.S. government. Lockyer believes that such a plan is both feasible and legal, Dresslar said.

"I don't think we have ever gone to the feds," said Fred Silva, senior fiscal policy advisor with California Forward, a state budget think tank.

Silva said the closest California came may have been in the days after the 1994 Northridge earthquake, when at the request of the state, Washington sped up payment of federal funds that the state was owed.

State officials now fear they face a potential cash crisis worse than California confronted in 2003, in the final days of Schwarzenegger's predecessor, Gov. Gray Davis.

At that time, the precipitous decline of state revenue in the middle of a budget year forced officials to pay a syndicate of banks a premium of hundreds of millions of dollars for what amounted to an expensive "payday loan."

Even that option, administration officials say, would not be available during the current credit drought. They say if Congress does not approve a bailout plan -- and maybe even if it does -- there will be no lenders available to provide the state with the money it needs, regardless of the premium the state is willing to pay.

"We need to go as wide as possible to try to find buyers at reasonable rates," said Robert Fayer, an attorney advising the state on its planned $7-billion bond sale.

"Whether it could ultimately be the federal government, I have no idea. It is a fairly radical concept."

I wish I could say this surprised me. I do know people that don't like/have questioned yoga because of its (non-Christian) religious origins and associations.

MASSENA, N.Y. - A group of parents and religious leaders in upstate New York want yoga classes out of public schools, saying the instruction violates boundaries between church and state.

Two high school teachers began using yoga last year to help students relieve stress before exams. Special education teacher Martha Duchscherer and Spanish teacher Kerry Perretta also were developing a districtwide program.

But those plans were halted after parents and others in the community complained students were being indoctrinated in Hindu rites.

"We are not opposed to the benefits. We can understand the benefits. We are opposed to the philosophy behind it and that has its ties in Hinduism and the way they were presenting it," said the Rev. Colin Lucid of Calvary Baptist Church in Massena.

Board: No hidden religious activity
The program does not have ulterior motives, Julie Reagan, Massena Board of Education president, said Thursday.

"If the school board felt there was any hidden religious activity behind the motives of our two instructors, we certainly wouldn't allow that," she said. "There is absolutely none of that. The teachers are well intended and trying to offer an aspect of fitness in the classroom that relaxes and readies the children for better learning."

A hundred schools in 26 states use yoga in the classroom to relieve stress, Reagan said. Federal funds and grants are available to educators seeking yoga certification, she said.

According to a statement on the Web site of the American Yoga Association, yoga is not a religion, although its practice has been adopted by Hinduism, as well as other world religions.

There are more than 100 different schools of yoga, which seeks to bring harmony to the mind and body. The most commonly practiced type in the United States is hatha yoga, which encompasses physical movements and postures, plus breathing techniques.

"It's been a little discouraging that this program has taken on a negative tone," said Duchscherer, who has taught in the Massena district for 11 years. "The intention was never to teach religion. ... It was to introduce relaxation techniques."

Reverend: Program causes stress
But Lucid believes the voluntary program causes stress and should be offered as an after-school activity.

"People have made it a religious war, and it's not a religious war. We are basically concerned parents, saying we don't want our children participating in something that could cause them more stress and confusion," Lucid said.

Parents in Aspen, Colo., were successful in demanding the removal of yoga in the local curriculum in 2002. In Alabama, religious leaders pushed for a 1993 law prohibiting the teaching of yoga in schools, citing connections between yoga and Hindu religious training.

I may be misunderstanding the origins of yoga (someone please correct me if I am wrong) but

According to a statement on the Web site of the American Yoga Association, yoga is not a religion, although its practice has been adopted by Hinduism, as well as other world religions.

sounds like pure distortion/wishful thinking/lies. In my understanding yoga was not something that was around and co-opted/abosrbed/what-have-you by (what we call) Hinduism; my understanding is that yoga is native to Hinduism.

That doesn't mean, of course, that yoga is necessarily religious in nature now. It depends on how it is taught. It isn't magic or anything.

BUT, still, I can understand some parents being uncomfortable with it being taught in schools. I, personally, would be uncomfortable with it (being taught to my [hypothetical] children) without being able to see the curriculum, see it being taught so that I could know that they weren't using chanting and prayers and teaching religious values.

And, just a further clarification, I (obviously) have no problem with people practicing/teaching/etc yoga as religious rite, as part of religion... but that has no place in public schools.

I googled it and came across this article. Interesting. But, I really think Yoga can be taught with no religious affiliation very easily and effectively.

Origins of Yoga
Is Yoga Without Hindu Influence Still Yoga?
FAIRHOPE, Ala.

The orgins of yoga reach all the way back to the Hindu religion, before Christ was even born. But many faithful churchgoers are chanting phrases from the Bible when they do their Downward Dog, and it's causing yoga purists to lose their cool.

Susan Bordenkircher teaches a Monday night Christian yoga class called "Outstretched in Faith."

"I approach each class as a way to share with people something great about their faith," she said.

But which faith? Traditional yoga, with it's roots in the Hindu religion, predates Christianity.

Its original goal was to develop self-awareness and find divinity within oneself.

Those Hindu ideals offend some Christians. Pope Benedict XVI has warned that yoga "can degenerate into a cult of the body."

When Bordenkricher, a devout Methodist, was first exposed to Yoga, she loved the exercise, but was turned off by some of the Hindu-based chanting.

"It made me feel uncomfortable," she said. "It made me feel as if those were elements that I certainly did not want to participate in."

So Susan joined a growing trend, modifying traditional yoga, replacing many of the Hindu chants with biblical phrases, or Christian themes.

There are clear physical benefits to this kind of activity. It stretches the muscles and relaxes the body. But Yoga purists say that Yoga without Hinduism, isn't Yoga at all.

"If you take a tree an chop off it's roots, then you don't have a tree, do you?" said Professor Subhas Tiwari, a professor of Yoga philosophy at Hindu University.

Tiwaris says yoga is not something that can be edited with the Hindu parts cut out.

"Yoga is mind body spirit," he said. "You want to make those separations then you live in a schizophrenic world."

Bordenkircher bristles at this charge.

"There is no way that you can take a posture that is from a body that God created and say this can only be used for the Hindu faith," she said.

It is a peaceful debate about the body and soul.

ABC News' John Berman filed this report for "World News Tonight."

I guess those Christians are only for separation for Church and State when it's not their religion.

Christians have tried to teach Creationism without affiliation (i.e. Intelligent Design) and have mostly been rebuffed.

And while I know that there are Christians who believe that Christianity should be taught in public schools but no other religions ... there are other Christians that accept the separation of church and State and are in a very reasonable position.

There could be (and likely are) Christians out there saying just what you wrote, Amy, subsituting in "secular humanists" or "heathens" or "Hindus" for "Christians."

Hannah Montana
High School Musical
High School Musical II

My daughter use to love Nsync, Christina Aguilara and the little blond carter boy, can't remember his first name. But she won't tell anyone that now. It is one of the things I am not allowed to mention in front of her friends. Your daughter will go through several musical phases. Most you will not be able to stand until she gets older to like what she likes and not whatever is "cool". My daughter went through a phase of screaming crap that I can't even describe to you where you only understood every 15th word. That was the worst I think. Now its old school gangsta rap.

Even an entourage of self-proclaimed cannibals.

How about these guys?

I hope they can save us from this:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,435681,00.html

The World Bank Group's computer network — one of the largest repositories of sensitive data about the economies of every nation — has been raided repeatedly by outsiders for more than a year, FOX News has learned.

It is still not known how much information was stolen. But sources inside the bank confirm that servers in the institution's highly-restricted treasury unit were deeply penetrated with spy software last April. Invaders also had full access to the rest of the bank's network for nearly a month in June and July.

In total, at least six major intrusions — two of them using the same group of IP addresses originating from China — have been detected at the World Bank since the summer of 2007, with the most recent breach occurring just last month.

In a frantic midnight e-mail to colleagues, the bank's senior technology manager referred to the situation as an "unprecedented crisis." In fact, it may be the worst security breach ever at a global financial institution. And it has left bank officials scrambling to try to understand the nature of the year-long cyber-assault, while also trying to keep the news from leaking to the public.

I bet they can. Mr. T has crazy hacking skillz.

yeah, we tried that as kids. only we were chicken, so we brought in a birthday candle with us so it wasn't COMPLETELY dark. well after a few minutes of chanting, we all of a sudden hear music and run out of the bathroom screaming. the candle was a musical candle that went off after the wax melted to a certain point, lol. scared the bajesus out of me though!!!!

little over 2 1/2. it's at a training facility, but it's basically play time on the trampolines, bars, mats, balance beam, etc. nothing too rigid or rigorous, just something to get her out and expending some of that non-stop energy.

A friend turned me on to Scott Adams' blog (he's the guy that writes Dilbert). This was his post today:

I plan to start hoarding supplies soon. There should be some big riots after the election. Here's a sequence of events and conditions that would lead to rioting. Do you see anything on the list that isn't likely?

The economy stays bad for a another month
Obama has a clear lead in the polls before election day
McCain wins anyway. While the real reason for the polling discrepancy will be racism, there will be a widespread belief that the election was rigged. And there will be plenty of real and imagined evidence that it was.
Riots will break out, partly out of genuine anger, partly to get that new flat screen TV.
We know the country can get past one suspicious Presidential election, because it did exactly that with Gore versus Bush. But two in a row would turn even normal citizens into conspiracy theorists. Given the anxiety over the economy, concerns about abortion rights, and the continuing wars, you have a perfect storm for revolution.

Interestingly, the only person who could stop the riots would be Obama himself.

ha ha ha ha ha ha, so the other project manager that sits next to me has bamboo in her cube. she's normally pretty quiet and calm. she found a spider web on it and got up to check it out. turns out there was a striped spider crawling around in there!!! we both freaked out and grabbed some paper to get it to crawl off onto, but then she flicks the paper and it practically lands on me and we both jump back screaming. then she starts stomping all over the ground and these two guys in the cubes next to us are just standing there trying not to laugh. that spider must have thought we were crazy. but still, WHAT DO THE STRIPES MEAN!?!?!?
