Neil Diamond reveals identity of 'Sweet Caroline'

By Sandy Cohen, Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Neil Diamond held onto the secret for decades, but he has finally revealed that President Kennedy's daughter was the inspiration for his smash hit Sweet Caroline.

"I've never discussed it with anybody before — intentionally," the 66-year-old singer-songwriter told The Associated Press on Monday during a break from recording. "I thought maybe I would tell it to Caroline when I met her someday."

He got his chance last week when he performed the song via satellite at Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg's 50th birthday party.

Diamond was a "young, broke songwriter" when a photo of the president's daughter in a news magazine caught his eye.

"It was a picture of a little girl dressed to the nines in her riding gear, next to her pony," Diamond recalled. "It was such an innocent, wonderful picture, I immediately felt there was a song in there."

Years later, holed up in a hotel in Memphis, he would write the words and music in less then an hour.

That story just made me tingly

I'm not even the slightest bit pissed about it. Mastercard said they'll eat it and I won't have to pay a dime. I just have to sign something and send it back to them. No idea what since they haven't sent it yet but I'll read it over and see if they're fucking me.

Oh, and I'm out a credit card for a week or so. I even had the number memorized, which may have been a bad thing as it led to many frivolous online purchases.

I hope I get to keep the Airmiles they earned me.

I really wanted to talk to you. I heard the way that your boyfriend was talking to you in the store. I heard the name he called you. That was very inappropriate. You just dont drop the N word. Why are you with such a douchebag? This guy berates you in public. I could not believe that he actually hit you in the store like you were his fucking child. You have to get some strength girl and stick up for yourself. It is very obvious that boy has done something to your self-esteem. If you do see this I hope to hear from you. I would really like to help you get out of that situation if you want to. I hate to see a woman be put down like this.

My gal told me the coolest story when we first met and it works now since it is almost Christmas …. She is very poor, urber poor, living in the UP of Michigan, in a cabin in the woods … it is her and her four daughters and that is it … so they go to church on Christmas eve …. As they walk back to their cabin, it is snowing and they look around to see the pristine snow, no footprints or tire tracks, just the fresh white snow … as they get to the door of the cabin, they notice on their front porch is a bag …. They gleefully look inside the bag, to find all sorts of Christmas goodies and food … no one ever claimed that they were the ones that put the bag there …. (and no she did not drink or do drugs back then for all the skeptics) …. Some people are just good, pretty simple all in all …. But that story does always bring a tear to my eyes

They have CD and DVD readers that can be operated like a turntable. I know one of my friends used to have a setup of two CD readers like that for DJing and Tool's visual guy uses something like the article you're talking about for controlling the videos that play during their show when they speed up or slow down songs.

Funny, on Friday we went for a hike in the canyon and it started to get really windy. You could hear some of the trees along the path creaking. They've probably been there for a hundred years or so and I thought about exactly that. How often does it happen where somebody gets killed by a random falling tree? I figured how could it happen? Wouldn't you have plenty of warning and time to get away? Apparently not.

"Rocke (LA): Any rumors flying around about the Suns? They are off to a nice start, but I can't help but think that this team really needs to make a move. Thanks.

Chad Ford: I wonder if they are following the Anderson Varejao situation. Shawn Marion can opt out of his deal this summer and has been unhappy with his role on the team. He's represented by Dan Fegan. Fegan wants a big extension. So far, it appears that owner Robert Sarver, isn't inclined to give him one. They've tried to trade him in the past, I wonder if all of this will increase the urgency. Marion is hugely important to the Suns. But if you're going to lose him for nothing this summer, you may have to see what you can find."

Whatever, Hannah. I'll be fine and dandy in 100+ heat at Coachella while you'll be melting on the ground. I heard on NPR that if you're not acclimated to hot weather, your cells will start dying in intense heat. But mine won't. :thu

You're not fooling anyone. You spend 99% of your day indoors in an air conditioned environment. The only time you're exposed to the sun is when you get your mail, but, since you live in the Phoenix area, you probably have to drive to your mailbox anyway.

And you're just talking nutty with that skin cell retardedry. Almost all of aging-related skin changes (wrinkles, freckles, you name it) is a result of exposure to sun. You're probably 10x more likely to get skin cancer than the Northern Alliance or even Hannah.

I wear sunscreen and longsleeves and jeans, so I'm fairly protected from the sun. Also, I am outside some of the time in the summer, and it doesn't bother me too much. I welcome the heat when I leave a freezing air-conditioned building, and my car is a fucking oven sitting out in the sun all day since I park on the roof of my work's parking structure.

If you Northern people can boast about being completely impervious to cold, then I should have my own bragging rights from living in a semi-arid desert.

Oh man it was intense today. One of my co-workers truck's (a ford f-250 - don't know what year...2004 or 2005 maybe)...big ol truck which is lifted with huge tires and the whole works (which I think is stupid, I hate big trucks)....well anyway, he has a TON of money invested in this thing....just spent $1400 on tires, $4000 on a transmission change, plus he had it totally customized in the inside...and I say "had" because today the whole thing caught on fire and erupted in flames and melted into a pile of ash. For real.

He parked it on the side of this private road we were gonna work at, and then all of a sudden the thing just caught fire just sitting there, and not even 20 seconds later, the whole thing was on fire...trees around it caught fire...luckily it was a diesel truck (and I say that because apparently diesel isn't as explosive as gasoline - I didn't know that), so it didn't explode into a huge ball of fire (which could of happened if it had a tank full of regular gas). Anyway, it was crazy.....the entire truck (this HUGE truck) melted into a pile of ash. Only thing was left was the steel frame which was towed away...everything else just burned to nothing. He had probably $5000 worth of equipment and tools in the back of the bed too (all gone now obviously).

I stayed down on the hill and watched the whole thing from there (because like I said earlier, I was thinking this was a gas truck and it was gonna explode any second - the tires did explode though and that was loud as fuck)....took the fire dept like 10 mins to get there.

But um anyway, yeah that's what happened today, pretty crazy. Lucky and glad that no one was in it or around it and got hurt or anything...but I feel bad for the guy...he just lost like what? Over $20,000 grand right there? He doesn't have full coverage either, just liability I heard....of course I don't own a car so I know nothing of insurance shit, but it seems he may be shit out of luck? Though he had just picked up the truck from the shop they day before...so who knows what caused this or why or whatever....made for a interesting morning though. Feel bad for the guy though.

Also, I was reading an old issue of SI and came across this little quote that made me choke on my cereal:

"British opera singer Tony Henry needs to brush up on his Croatian. While singing that country's national anthem before the game against England last week, Henry was suppose to sing "Mila kuda si planina" ("You know, my dear, how w love your mountains"); instead, he sang "Mila kura si planina," or "My dear, my penis is a mountain."

Conn. Teacher Calls Police Over Impromptu Karaoke
Teacher Barricades Herself Inside Classroom After Hearing 'Welcome To The Jungle'
ROXBURY, Conn. (AP) ―
A school custodian's impromptu after-hours karaoke performance prompted a police response when a teacher thought she was being threatened over the loudspeaker.

State police say a teacher at Booth Free School barricaded herself inside a classroom Wednesday when she mistook someone singing a Guns N' Roses song over the public address system for a threat.

She was working after hours and thought no one else was in the building. Then she heard someone say over the loudspeaker that she was going to die.

Digg This Story!

Six troopers and three police dogs showed up and found three teenagers, one of them a custodian at the school, who had been playing with the public address system.

Police say one of them sang "Welcome to the Jungle" into the microphone. The song contains the lyrics "You're in the jungle baby; you're gonna die."

The teenagers were cuffed on the ground for about 15 minutes while police investigated. They were released after being questioned and state police Sgt. Brian Ness said they did not realize the teacher was in the school and will not face charges.

"These things happen," Van Ness said. "Luckily it was humorous. You kind of have a gut feeling. As soon as we got there, we spoke to the three kids. They understood."

Conn. Teacher Calls Police Over Impromptu Karaoke
Teacher Barricades Herself Inside Classroom After Hearing 'Welcome To The Jungle'
ROXBURY, Conn. (AP) ?
A school custodian's impromptu after-hours karaoke performance prompted a police response when a teacher thought she was being threatened over the loudspeaker.

"These things happen," Van Ness said. "Luckily it was humorous. You kind of have a gut feeling. As soon as we got there, we spoke to the three kids. They understood."

It saddens me to think that any teacher in this day and age wouldn't recognize these as lyrics to a song, and wouldn't first assume it to be a silly joke - especially when she thought she was alone. What's the point of singing out threats to an empty school? Calling the cops and barricading herself in the room seems a bit overreactive. But I guess that's the result when we are constantly being fed the need to fear everything.

This is kind of pitiful …. Yesterday I went thru my mail that I haven’t messed with in apparently a long time … when I got done throwing away the junk mail I could barely get it all in one of those big plastic garbage bags …. That didn’t include the stuff I kept …. Its not really as bad as that sounds because all of my bills are paid directly out of my check, so I never have to “pay” bills … I guess that is why I haven’t popped open my check book in about 4 years …. Yikes, I just don’t do a lot of stuff like other people …. Canx**

I am just sitting here trying to kill some time …. Last week we went out and did this contest for ricola …. There is suppose to be a person that is walking around, and then they will cough, and then if you have a ricola and give them one, you get to pick from 100 envelopes …. There are cash amounts ranging from $500 all the way to a million !!!! Well it is suppose to be a secret place and they give you these clues …… I bet if I give J$$$ the clues, he would guess the same place as me and about 50 other people thought too …. Ok, Justin here are the clues ….. I will be somewhere in-between great art and a lot of books … also I am in sight (they spelled it site on the clue place, don’t know if that meant anything, or it was just they are European) …. Anyway I am in sight of two government buildings … anyway so we went there and spent an hour and nobody won  I think it was a trick lol …. It was fun though, because I wore my dog feet, and dog tail and everyone got a kick out of it, especially the bums …. Now would you board members do something like that, or am I just that off the wall?? Canx*
