Who is on your ignore list and why?

mountmccabe
03-01-2007, 03:12 PM
Though I commented on the folks in the other thread that has a poll I tend to find that talking about ignore lists defeats the purpose. Or at least my purpose which is making this a better place for me. I don't want to go out of my way to put down people that already bug me.

I see the Ignore function as a service to me, so I don't go down the dark side and say things that I may feel but may also hurt someone's feelings. And, honestly, I don't really want to hurt anyone's feelings, except for Randy. I fucking hate Randy. He used to be amusing to me up until now. Now I've determined that he's a gay hating/homophobic, sexist fucknut who seems to thrive on responses from people. I take his bait all the time and now I hate myself because of it.

My point is that, with the exception of Randy, I feel no need to tell someone they are on Ignore. I use it so I don't have to read their shit and get drawn into actual vitriolic arguing. Ain't really my style. I feel much more comfortable insulting people I find irritating behind their back.

Now come on Yablo, I have no beef with you.
And at 35, you honestly telling me that you believe I am racist and sexist!!!?......i can take all the 'over worded' comments from all of you but i thought it was out of order doing it to Amy...that make me sexist?...I think not. And for racism...explain how I am this?....or are we not talking colour but nations...if so I am messing about. like I said, you're 35....so come on tell me straight why you believe this?
As for the other stuff, i give what I get...to me its a game, something to do.

Randy,

I've edited my comment to remove the "racist" accusation. I'll admit that I don't fully understand the Kriss Abasuki jokes as he is not someone of import in the US. However, the way those stories, which you find so fucking chuckle worthy, seem to play up his sexual prowess as a manifestation of his race seem to point to preconceived biases you hold about black people. Maybe there's more to the story but I sincerely doubt it.

Your ridiculous assertion that it's somehow lowly for a man to insult a woman on the message board infers that women should be treated differently (for you, that seems to involve turning them into sexual objects) than men, that they are somehow like children, unable to defend themselves. You may think it's "respectful," but it's fucking denigrating. You just can't see it. It's the opposite of respect to say that it's cruel to pick on women. There are women on this board who could rip you a new asshole verbally and I think would welcome any attempts on your sad behalf to insult them.

Finally, I changed "racist" to homophobe and gay-hating. If you think it's perfectly rational to insult someone by calling them a "******" than I'm pretty sure you would agree with this assessment of you. Also, I no longer wish to fuck you because of this.

There. Now I'm done with you. You are on ignore. Don't send me any more personal messages because I'm not going to respond to them. Please get the hell out of this forum. Please. You're not funny anymore.

Courtney

Yes, you see the threads even if you have the thread-starter on ignore. You just don't see the individual messages from the ignored person, unless you specifically click to view message.

kreutz2112
03-06-2007, 02:12 PM

Yeah. You can try it out. Just put me or whoever on ignore by clicking the user name and then "add to ignore list," then look at this thread and you'll see that I posted, but you won't see the content of my post unless you click to view.

And then un-ignore me because otherwise my feelings will be hurt :)

I had people on ignore because they pissed me off to the point where I was getting needlessly angry and sometimes even crying over remarks they made to me. No one is pestering me too much now, or I don't feel like they are, so everyone is off ignore.

I always found the "ignore list" on message boards to be completely silly. You aren't forced to read anything. Are you not an adult who can simply scroll pass or ignore some message without utilizing the button? It's not like anyone is forced to listen or anything. Almost always people want to let everyone know who is on their ignore list. It's hilarious. It's the same logic of how to get rid of a board troll. People take the bait, they complain, they argue and then when they are done they want the person banned or some shit, or they want the troll to go away. yet, the majority of people who want them gone are fueling the fire. I get a kick out of the people who rant about a particular problem poster.

There is only one way a troll goes away. You ignore them. Not with your little button and screaming "i have you on ignore haha". You don't respond or even recognize it in any public way. A troll can post a hundred threads and if no one responds to them, they will go elsewhere. Instead you have people going into each thread whining and complaining for it all to stop. Grow up. Use your adult ignore feature and stop acknowleging these people and move on with your life.

Otherwise, you are fully supporting everything they do by giving them a reaction of any kind.

I agree that giving trolls fuel by responding to them is counterproductive, as is constantly reminding someone you have them on ignore. Although I'm not completely decided, I do think it could possibly be productive to tell someone at the moment that you put them on your ignore list, so that they are aware you will no longer be responding to their baiting. But then that's just once, and it shouldn't need to be mentioned again.

I do think the ignore feature is a useful capability programmed into this message board, and worth using. Sure you can manually skip over posts instead of using an ignore list, but if the feature is there and quick to implement, it seems like an easier way to go.

faxman75

See to me, normal scrolling of the thread is easier than adding someone to my list and commenting about having them there. I dunno. I have never had a reason to ever ignore someones post. I'll read what anyone has to say. My feelings don't get hurt by people I don't know, now do I get offended easily. If someone is being stupid I simply take not and keep going. That's it. To each their own though, which is why it exists. I just think it's amusing to watch people say "ignore" or "i added him to my last" or "welcome to ignore". I don't see a message board poster as harmful I guess. I can take reading anything.

Just sayin'

and i agree with fax, the whole point of coming here is because its a place for people to share their opinions, and i think its sad when people want to limit the opinions to only those that they approve of.

And it really is only about my lack of understanding, although the above words imply otherwise.

This thread has an interesting flow. People explain why they use the ignore function and then somebody posts saying that they don't understand why anyone would use the ignore function and that it is childish and a symptom of closemindedness. Then people explain why they use the ignore function and other folks posting saying that they don't know why people use the ignore function.

I am also finding a correlation between likelihood of denigrating the ignore function and being on my ignore list. I have a basic hypothesis to explain this: Folks that are here for shits and giggles and are out to annoy others and cause a ruckus (no offense) don't want me to be able to easily ignore their shenanigans.

mountmccabe
02-06-2008, 06:53 PM
And, because they asked I will attempt to explain:

Bump

Just curious . . .

I feel as if I am ignored by many, and I don't completely understand.
(This is me quietly weeping in the corner.)

I did have you on ignore for a while. It has never been a hard ignore, though. I don't remember what annoyed me, but I do know that even at it's worst it was never all the time. You seem like a nice person and I don't think you're trying to cause trouble but... but that made me want to put you on ignore more.

I will try to explain that in response to this:

I find that the people who seem to utilize the ignore are those that feel everyone is entitled to their opinion, but they have no tolerance for other's. I find that sadly and annoyingly oxyMORONIC. (Not to say that every comment elicits a response.)

I had you on ignore precisely because I tolerate your right to have and express your opinions and attitudes. For whatever reason they rubbed me the wrong way so I could either argue with you and attack you and try to make you feel unwelcome... or ignore you. With ignoring you there's no "this message board isn't big enough for the both of us" nonsense.

I took you off ignore, though, around when the Book Club was starting because you were a strong participant in that and because I more often than not hit "View Post" anyway.

mountmccabe
02-06-2008, 07:01 PM
A couple notes before I continue:

Hard ignore - I really, really try hard to not hit "View Post." If I do anyway because they're participating in a conversation with people I do like/find interesting/am not ignoring I will still almost never respond in any way. Not many people are on this (mental) list. These tend to be the meanest, cruelest people on my ignore list.

Easy ignore - Most people fit here; they are the ones that sometimes bug me but aren't worthless or mean. If I am in a hurry or in a bad mood or whatever I'll stay away. If I'm bored feeling open I'll be more likely to hit "View Post."

(Near) True ignore - I won't bother at all, ever. This is for trolls and annoying aliases and people where I can't quite figure out if they're a troll or an alias or just a moron.

Why? Because it seems like near all your posts are quotes of a block of text or a picture/youtube and a "lol" or "yeah" or some other content-free comment.

Generally harmless but it can get annoying, especially when it seems like we have different tastes in blocks of text/pictures/youtubes.

I think the issue here is you failed to get the subtle humor. In giving such a detailed explanation, John was implicitly remarking on the ridiculousness of the board as a whole; and given that he has friends and spends time here, that in turn gives it a bit of a self-deprecating quality that whooshed right over your head, and which in turn made your harsh criticism uncalled for and out of place. It's one thing to dislike a post and state your reasons for it; it's another thing to dislike a post because you aren't capable of grasping the nuanced subtextual content.

In case you're wondering, this post is, like John's, both serious and ridiculous at the same time. Though mine is not as awesome as his, it goes without saying.

I'lll take issue with this. Of course I am here for shits and giggles. What the fuck else do people use message boards and the internet for? Is this a classroom? Should we be studying? Is this for information purposes only? I think not. I think your description is a bit off. Also, no one has called for your little ignore button to even be taken away, some were simply giving their opinion about the button.

The fact of the matter is this place is a community. That's the bottom line. It's an internet community for people who have interest in coachella, whether they have gone in the past, like to discuss music or just babble and landed here because of their music interests.

Just like in real life some people take jokes personally, some people are ignorant and rude, others are just normal, some are so shy they don't even post.

I am here to discuss, study up on music, make jokes and communicate with friends. All those reasons. Along the way I may make jokes at others expense. I might call someone a retard or an asshole. I might say shut the fuck up or who the hell knows. It doesn't mean that i'm some sort of internet demon trying to suck out your soul so I can shit it out at a later date.

Stop thinking you are so special. Whoever said that the ignore feature says more about the person using it than anything else got it right.

My explanation wasn't even enough, I think. Or maybe, who knows. So:

Just to clarify: those are subgroups of the category Ignore. I don't have that many regular posters on ignore, so when I say "most people fit here" I am not referring to the general population of the board but to the population of my ignore list.

Also the reason I have been trying to give information and why I've been responding to people who have wondered if others have them on ignore is that I'm trying to break the cycle of ignorance on this critical issue.

Welcome to the interwebs.

I don't think I am special. I am, however, happy that I can customize this board somewhat with the aid of the ignore function. It's just a tool.

I am here for much the same reasons you are, I wanna hear and talk about music and other topics, laugh at stories and jokes and hear from my friends.

If someone isn't contributing to any of that I can put them on ignore and clear away the clutter. I have nothing against airguitarvet but writing "BEST THREAD EVER" every post doesn't add anything to my life. Sure, it's harmless but also pointless. Plus I have the option of hitting View Post if I wanna read "BEST THREAD EVER," but having him on ignore gives me the option of avoiding that if I so wish.

Having someone on ignore doesn't mean I hate them, doesn't mean I think they're a worthless person, it doesn't even mean I think they should be banned from this message board... it just means I don't always wanna see their posts. (Though, like any community, there are always a few cruel and destructive assholes that I don't want around; these are a small minority.)

So I'm not sure what that all says about me, having people on ignore. That I don't giggle at the same things? That I get sick of people ranting about the same thing over and over? That I have the ability to control my environment and I use it?

Also, thanks for the kind welcome. You're about fifteen years too late, but hey.

Though you're about my age; I'd bet you've been around as long. I've been around the interwebs, thank you. I've got a plenty thick skin, but I like not having to use it all the time.

And what I've found that I like best is not watching trolls cause havoc but people. Actual people acting like real people talking about interesting and mundane things and not playing all attitude.

This is not an ignore list. It's a list of all Nipples aliases.

Courtney

Ha.

I want to clarify that I don't see the ignore list as a tool to eliminate people whose opinions differ from mine, as some people seem to assume. I wouldn't put rage patton on there, even though we have very different musical tastes. I don't have ShyGuy on there, despite our Hillary-Barack squabbles.

I ignore people who troll or post especially malicious content without redeeming themselves through any sort of productive contribution, and that's pretty much it.

Very well said. In fact a little too well said for my tastes. Now that you've said so succinctly and clearly what I've been rambling on and on about I feel bad. I don't come here to feel bad. My ignore list just got one more name!
