Lazy Ox

The Gorbals
If you are bringing a big group of people you can NEVER go wrong with Bottega Louie, pretty good food, servers that can cater to large crowds, and wherever you are in that facility there is something to eat, drink, look at, talk about while you are waiting. Probably your safest bet.
Also, if you want to head to the more family friendly east side of hollywood such as Los Feliz and Silverlake I have a myriad of recommendations for those areas as well.

You guys are awesome. If anyone has any Hollywood recommendations (as in Hollywood proper; not adjacent) let me know. If we dine out in Hollywood it will be near-ish to Hollywood and Vine. We've got Umami, Kabuki (sushi) and I've heard good things about The Hungry Cat..
It's so funny that Bottega Louie came up here. I just learned about that place in the sleaziest manner possible, but then I looked it up and it sounded perfect. The main complaint I read about that place is that the space is so open that if it's crowded you can't hear your party without screaming. True?

Hm. That might be a valid complaint. Bottega is definitely not an intimate setting. There is bar area at front with the bakery and tables in between the two. It makes for a line of people ordering either coffee or pastries only just as you enter the main door. To get to the restaurant area you have to walk in a bit further. It's an awkward set up. Plus, tall, high ceilings with a tiled floor. Large, open space. It's noisy! And once you're seated, you'll most likely be making new friends since they pack the place tight in spite of its openess. I still highly recommend it. Plus, you'll "wow" everyone in your party by simply showing them the bakery case up front- that thing is AWESOME! Bottega should be a good place for families in general.
Oh, and make sure and order their caprice salad as an app.

Btw, Mas Malo (which I left off my original posting) is right across the street. I have eaten there 4 times or so. If the family would rather, that is a very good sit down Mexican food alternative to Bottega. Parking for both is just a bit past Bottega on Grand Ave in an outdoor lot.
Also, Mas Malo has a special tequila tasting room in the back. I have only been there for lunch so never been inside. But it looks pretty damn sweet.
Oh, and 7 Grand is literally through the same door as Mas Malo. Just go right at the entrance to Mas Malo and head up the stairs instead of straight ahead to the restaurant. 7 Grand is a cool, rustic haunt filled with delicous scotch. A nice place for a pre-dinner drink.

Thanks, Sonny. Gotta say, Bottega Louie looks like it's winner-winner Pizza dinner. I actually drove by it recently but didn't realize what it was. Looked so... tony from the exterior but I see that it's actually very reasonably priced. Oh, and THIS was the reason I heard about the place. I know, I know...
http://twilightnewssite.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/taylor-lautner-boggeta.jpg
One assumes that Gus Van Sant and Dustin Lance Black took the Twilight kid out to discuss his big coming out story over some pizza pie.
Anyone else done Silo Vodka Bar in downtown yet? I went to their soft opening a couple of weeks back and was really impressed. They had a few operational kinks to work out, but the service was friendly and fast and the cocktails were fantastic.

If the concern about Bottega Louie is that it might be too loud when crowded, Mas Malo is not really a good alternative. That place is loud as fuck when it's crowded.

I was extremely shit-faced and loud and throwing things when i was at Bottegga Louie hahaha. it was a huge group dinner the night before my high school reunion and I had been drinking for like 7 hours prior. The pizza was soooooo good. Then we went outside and bought shitty mandolins out of a Mexican lady's shopping cart and serenaded everyone in the restaurant.

Did Wood & Vine last night in Hollywood. Near Hollywood & Vine (naturally). Was absolutely fantastic. Very simple menu. Some lovely cocktails, beers and wines. A fine selection of charcuterie and cheeses and a 8 or 9 small plates perfect for splitting with a group. Highlights...
The Potted Foie Gras - some of the most wonderfully rich and surprisingly complex foie gras I've ever tasted; no lectures, please.
Heirloom Tomato Salad - farm fresh ingredients, nicely balanced.
Fried Chicken and Waffles with maple glazed squash and sage butter - as good as it sounds.
Grilled Scallops - served with truffled grits - wow!
I'm sure their desserts are great too, but we were too stuffed to even attempt it.

I was really disappointed with Wood & Vine. Like they were presented as a bar with a focus on whiskey, and their whiskey list is weak to say the least. To be fair, I had dinner prior to going there, so I can not comment on their food. Their patio is a dope little area though.

Really? This is how they describe themselves on the website. No mention of whiskey:
A Hollywood bar and restaurant featuring local small batch wines and beers, classic cocktails, and seasonal shared plates
The food was fantastic. As for drinks, we stuck to the Happy Hour (11pm-2am) cocktails which were all excellent. We tried the Watermelon Caipirinha, Gin & Roses and The Accomplice.

I spend most of my time in Santa Barbara, so when I come back to LA I never know where to go. Any suggestions for bars around Pasadena?

Went and had drinks at Perch last Friday - it's on the roof top of a 15-story building nat Pershing Square in downtown L.A. It has a great open air indoor area and is mostly patio-seating. the view and the ambiance are absolutely gorgeous. It's expensive. i only had drinks, but they fancy themselves a French restaurant. it's a great place to have a drink or two next to a fire pit on top of a beautiful rooftop in L.A.

Thanks for the review. I've heard about this place and was thinking to stop by. I don't mind dropping ridiculous prices for a drink or two. So long as the ambience is right and the food is good. Just gotta go somewhere else if I need to get a buzz (like 7 Grand). :D

One of you other 3 that suck off each other tag this and make it your own. This is from Wednesday.
Bleating & Eating, Downtown L.A. Goats Return For Round 4
A herd of about 100 four-legged weed whackers descended upon downtown L.A. this morning. Angels Knoll hillside at 4th and Hill welcomes these hungry goats for their fourth annual hillside clearing.
In lieu of gasoline-powered tools and a human crew, the animal workforce provides a cheap and eco-friendly alternative for the yearly maintenance project. First introduced to the weed-stricken hillside in 2008 by the Community Redevelopment Agency, the herd returned in 2009 and 2010.
Apparently, the goats waste zero time during the work day, are highly motivated and focused. They are scheduled to complete their duties in just two days, according to blogdowntown.com.
As one of the most bizarre urban sights of the summer, the grazers entertain and maintain.

Did fb have a stroke?
Might explain it. Maybe I'm just misreading him. Or could it be just another twunt who thinks that if something has already been posted around here it dare not get posted again? Amazing these guys find their way into every godam thread like they're the godam Coachella forum police. Then people revere them for it. They can all kiss my ass.
Anyway, need to hip you guys to a small, unassuming market that sells grass-fed beef called Figueroa Produce--
http://www.yelp.com/biz/figueroa-produce-los-angeles#query:figueroa%20market
This place is a quick ride up the 110 north from downtown. Off at 60th street, over to Fig then a right up to York. In a strip mall with the 99c store. Not sure where they are sourcing from but this is the third time I have bought their grass-fed ribeye from them and it is incredible! Not cheap ($18 per lbs) but awesome. In general their butcher case is top notch and welcome relief from Ralph's or Trader Joe's. Worth a look.
For bars, hit up Xlixe tonight but only long enough to grab a menu and look around. Very small beer selection- but they sell growlers... yea! And a pizza called the Furious Pig topped with spicey pork belly! Hitting it up tomorrow barring work related interference and will report back shortly.

I know what you mean. And it's not like I am swimming in $ or anything. But damn it's hard to find quality steak for a reasonable price in this town. Figueroa Market definitely delivers.
Actually now that I am thinking on it the best place to purchase meat in So CA is the Huntington Beach Beef Palace and Butcher Shop--
http://www.yelp.com/biz/beef-palace-butcher-shop-huntington-beach
Don't think I have mentioned this place here before? Anyway, it's outstanding in terms of quality for both pork and beef/steak but I just don't live near enough to it to make regular visits. But it truly is the best I have found. Great brisket and pork ribs. CASH ONLY!
A terrific place closer to home is the Huntington Meats Market at the Farmer's Market off Fairfax (Confusing name, I know. No relation to the Palace in Huntington Beach)
http://www.huntingtonmeats.com/hmhomepage.html
There's decent parking for the Farmer's Market and this butcher case is worth your time. Top notch T-Bone.
Closer to home, the east LA area does have some grate fish markets I know of. The mighty Fish King in Glendale is one--
http://www.yelp.com/biz/fish-king-glendale
These guys sell whole Branzino! Damn it is the best whole fish ever. Great salmon selection too.
Go!

Unfortunately, LA kind of really sucks for dance clubs. Avoid The Mayan and the Belasco in downtown like the plague. They're often advertised as the biggest most "luxe" clubs in downtown. You'd have a better time tuning your hotel clock radio to JackFM and quickly flicking the bathroom lights on and off.
Museum of Contemporary Art (for early evening) in downtown is always worth a visit.
I would echo that recommendation for Silo Vodka Bar. Really great experience.
Library Bar is a fun gastropub downtown.
The Standard Hotel's rooftop bar is definitely worth checking out for the stunning view. You're cocooned by some of the tallest skyscrapers in LA. Be warned: overpriced drinks, so-so dj's. Usually a surprisingly nice and relaxed crowd up there, though. And, again, the setting is stunning.
Dinner: Try the Lazy Ox Canteen. Tons of really delicious small plates; great for a group.

Seriously? So-So DJS? On a sunday? the Culprit sessions party generally gets some solid acts. Three was just there last month. Matt Tolfrey, Jamie Jones, Lee Curtis, Martin Buttrich & Lee Foss are all coming in a month or two.
My only complaint is that my work schedule doesn't allow me to make it to these events except on a very rare occasion.

oh that makes sense then... I just assumed that you meant sundays cause they were asking about sundays.
On a tangential note. Anyone check out Hemingway's at Hollywood & Ivar? I can imagine it's obnoxious on the weekend, but Wednesday nights are really dope there. Free entry w/ RSVP (http://www.giantclub.com/soulpurpose/), decent mix of people, Drinks aren't crazy expensive, but not cheap (beer is $6 or $7 depending on what you get, I've bought some pretty decent level scotch for $12). DJs playing a pretty good mix of tunes ranging from soul to house to some old school hip hop... all of it chill and funky. Unannounced guests in the decks week to week (last two weeks had Cosmic Kids and Josh One behind the decks, first two weeks were just the residents)
Been going to this pretty much each Wednesday since they started running it. Great chill mid-week spot. And I love the decor in the place.

Went to the new spot in Echo Park owned by the Tony's Darts Away folks called Mohawk Bend (on Sunset & Mohawk) and it was what I expected it to be, a cluster fuck with a shit load of good beer on tap and pretty decent upscale bar food that is modestly priced. The main attraction here is the women, there were ALOT of women. This place also should be a good alternative to the typically douchebag filled Barney's chains for game watching.
I probably won't be back unless I feel like leaving my place to watch a game, am invited to some random birthday party, or a meet up of some sorts before heading elsewhere, the place is too much of a headache, almost felt like I was at a Cheesecake Factory on graduation day for local high schools. Also, they text message you when your table is ready.
I will stick with the more subtle beer bars in the area. On that note, has anybody tried Beer Belly in K-Town???

El Carmen-Mexican food and Tequila bar
I dig this place. Happy Hour 5-7 on weekdays will get you a $4 margarita, $4 nacho plate, or quesadillas. Their tequila list huge...I've been into spicy drinks lately and their jalapeno margarita did the trick.
The ambiance is one of the main reasons to go. It's small, (really) dark, intimate, and covered with lucha libre masks and art all over.
If you're going with a group, best make a reservation just in case.

Everybody should go to Beer Belly, the food concoctions are out of this world especially the grilled cheese which comes drizzled with maple syrup on french toast bread and thick cut maple cured bacon and their duck confit duck fat fries with raspberry sauce, centralized location, good crowd, you can play your own music via their downloadable iphone app jukebox, beer selection is fantastic had Blue House IPA, some great Eagle Rock Brewery selections, a stellar Stone 15th anniversary Black IPA, and the staff is unbelievably accommodating.
GO NOW!
FYI- They have something there called a "Beer Flight" which allows you to sample 4 taps of your choice for $9.00 which is a great fucking deal. Also, this place is a MUST if you like Asian women... Just sayin'.

Timmy Nolans is great, but it's not anywhere near walking distance to the Bowl. You could very quickly drive to the Universal Metro Station in about 3 minutes though. I don't know if Mark is going to have a car.

Sports bar near Hollywood Bowl - go to Dillon's. Big Wangs has become a ginormous douche-fest, and Dillons has cheap beer and good food. Powerhouse doesn't have the NFL package and isn't really a sports spot anyway. No need for Metro, it's a 10 minute walk from Hollywood/Highland to Hollywood/Vine.
Timmy Nolan's is for valley townies and old men with drinking problems. Avoid the 818 altogether, it's hot and full of shitty people and bad LA cliches.

K-TOWN— On August 28 Beer Belly is holding an event titled Craft for Crap and here's how it works. Pick a friend of yours that doesn't necessarily like craft beer, raid said friend's fridge and bring to Beer Belly whatever crap beer you can find. Give the crap beer to a Beer Belly bartender and he/she will trade you one of the following brews from Cismontane: Citizen (Steam Lager), Black's Dawn (Imperial Stout), or Coulter IPA. [EaterWire]
Pretty sure I have a can of Miller in my fridge somewhere...

That's an awesome event. I went to Beer Belly last night and it's pretty neat. it's very small. The catfish and chips and the grilled cheese were both great. I had the Black Market Brown from the tap, and a bottle of the Stone collaboration Cheery Chocolate Stout. Wow, that beer has a lot of fucking flavor.
As long as they change the tap list often, because they have a pretty small amount of taps and carry some pretty wild beers, this place is going to rule.

I did not...I wasn't really hungry enough and my girlfriend is a vegetarian so she wouldn't be able to help. While there though, i saw for $2 more you can add "Death By Duck" which is duck confit right on top of the fries. Yum. Will try leater.

Then stop giving shitty information to tourists. Timmy Nolan's? You'd really tell someone with 0 LA know-how to go to a bar in Toluca Lake frequented by old men who drink too much? The fact that it's a Bears bar makes it worse, the worst people in LA are movie industry transplants.
On the flip side, Beer Belly is off the hook. The duck fat fries made me feel like the fattest piece of shit but so worth it, and their beer selection is very good (albeit small). Plus, it's in Koreatown, real LA, and it's run by 2 K-Town locals. It's also next to Frank N Hanks which is a great local dive to hit when you're done with BB.

And to add, the best sports bar to be social at in Hollywood is Hollywood Billiards. It's spaced out so the fans of different teams spread into their own mini-sections. There's a pretty big contingent for every team, the biggest being the Raiders and Cowboys. Plus it's a lot easier to get a drink there than Wangs or Dillons.
And I don't mean to be a dick, but most people who hate going to LA do so because of bad advice.

We had flat bread with tapinade which was good, and I had a pound of the mussels and they were fucking delicious! The tap list was not blowing my mind despite having 70+ beers on it, but all 3 I had were good. The two cocktails my girlfriend had were out of this world good though! Mark,
The parking lots right around the corner from Dillon's on Argyle are usually around $10.00 and you can leave them there pretty much all night, there is also a fairly good amount of street parking on Argyle if you get there in the later part of the afternoon.
Also, be careful with the driving, that area is infested with cops waiting for bar crawlers and Hollywood Bowl attendees that are leaving parking lots intoxicated.

I tried going to Beer Belly tonight, only to find that they were spraying for bugs. Instead we went to Blue Palms, Stout and District 13. Blue Palms, as everyone knows, is fantastic. Stout was full of snobby bartenders and the tap kinda sucked. District 13 is next door, and the people working there totally knew their beer and their clientele. I really dug the atmosphere they were shooting for there, and I'll be back if I'm ever in the area. They had the Dogfish Head/Sierra Nevada collab on tap too, which was a nice surprise.

Does anyone have any creative picks for NFL Sunday Ticket bars in Los Angeles? My default has been The Draft out in the Valley for the past couple years, but I'm not quite excited about going back.
The options in downtown Hollywood suck badly and most of the westside/beach adjacent options are way overpriced. I've got half a mind to move to SF just for Sundays. The bay area has much, much better NFL bars...

Before Portishead last night, my friend and I hit up Silo. My first time back since their soft opening. The martinis were just as good. The fresh berry and jalapeno one is wonderfully balanced. Then we hit up Bottega Louie. My first time. Food was... okay. Caesar salad was nice, my clam linguini was bland. My friend's orecchiette was a bit better. But it was kind of totally worth it for the fun atmosphere and that crazy pastry/dessert counter. The macarons (especially the Earl Grey infused milk chocolate ganache macaron) were fantastic. I was reluctant to have dinner here with my friends since it seemed like everything on the menu was fried, but we decided to indulge. The duck fat fries sounded like they'd be some ridiculously "well-worth-it" indulgence. Instead they were dry and flavorless and the duck confit was so bland. The brussel sprouts were bitter and undercooked. Fried catfish was dry. Buttermilk fried chicken was average. The only truly good thing was the Beer Belly Grilled Cheese. But, come on, how hard is it to make good grilled cheese? This kitchen needs a serious overhaul. Be back for the beer, but never for the food.

Did Perch in downtown tonight with a group of guys. I think it's new(ish). Rooftop bar and bistro near Pershing Square. Offers beautiful views of the downtown LA skyline. The views are more expansive than at The Standard because you're not so cocooned by the skyscrapers. Good place for a date or for a group of friends. House cocktails were quite good, though not all that subtle. We did lots of small plates. It's French bistro cuisine with a twist, I guess. The Buttermilk Marinated Frogs Legs w/ Lily Root & Garlic Chips were really great. Definitely pricey, but I'd probably take out of town visitors here for the views and the ambiance. It has a great atmosphere with a totally beautiful building, all the food we had was very good, extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly wait staff, and a very awesome beer and spirits selection. the bar tender made a Heather a number of his own recipes for bourbon cocktails that weren't on the menu that were all really good. Any recommendations for pub trivia/trivia nights in LA?
I use to go to R Bar in Koreatown frequently for Tuesday night Trivia. Its fun, mainly because there are so little people and its easy to win free drinks!

My only knock on 7G is they can intentionally dissuade you from drinking anything other than the high end whiskies (or anything expensive). Last time I was there after work with co-workers, I asked to get a Chimay from the tap and they told me it was "broken" and the beer coming out would not be cold and I really should consider something else. I just wanted a beer, but got a Glenlivet instead. I decided after that I still wanted a beer and told them I'd take my chances. It was frosty cold and fine. Not a huge deal. Just saying.

I spend entirely too much time at this place
http://www.wurstkucherestaurant.com/
Doesn't help that I just bought a condo within walking distance of it. While it does not have hard liquor, I'd argue its on-tap German and Belgian beers alone make it worth the schlep. And as for the sausages... well, check the menu on the above link yourself. It's as spectacular as it sounds. Plus, I have met quite a few people there in the communal beer garden who I'm starting to think of as friends. Very interesting place.
This place sounds great. I'll definitely be checking it out soon.

^Glad to see an oldy but goody re-post guys. Thanks! Coincidentally, I did hit my beloved Wurstkuche earlier today. I cannot recommend the Filipina Mahralika enough. Pile sweet peppers on that sucker! For the German brews, make sure and get Schneider's and on the Belgian side it is all about the Duchesse. Shame about all those excess pounds you'll jam on! The Beer Belly had a pretty good write up on The LA Times recently.
I checked out Wurstkuche (http://www.wurstkuche.com/) last week, a pretty great selection of German and Belgium beers, along with amazing hot dogs (ranging from vegetarian to duck/rattlesnake). It's grouped with a couple other interesting restaurants in a tight little corner, including Nola's (http://nolasla.com/), a New Orleans Jazz spot. They have jazz every night and during lunch hours, pretty great to just order a drink and watch rotating band members jam. Friday and Saturday nights there is a cover (i heard $10).

The Federal is great! Also tap list, great bartenders, good food, cool atmosphere (the front bar is great to pop in for a drink and the back dining room is nice for dinner), and the dance floor upstairs that opens up at night is fun too. Also a good happy hour!
More valley bars for Dani (I can constantly update this with more, but here's a start)-
BURBANK
http://tonysda.com/ (TONY'S DARTS AWAY) - amazing craft beer destination. 30+ taps, all california craft and changed daily. No booze, but they also have 2 CA wines on tap at all times. Food is decent - vegan and non-vegan sausages with a huge selection of toppings, yummy homemade potato chips. They usually have good daily food specials. Small place with several tables - shelves have board games and beer books. Pool table and dart board Place gets super crowded at night, but it's awesome and mellow in the afternoon and early evening. great weekend lunch place. It has an internet jukebox and the patrons generally have good taste.
www.danceatjoes.com/ (GREAT AMERICAN JOE'S) - Average beer list, full bar. Nice big space with a stage. Pool table and 2 dart boards. The burger is FANTASTIC. Big screen for sports. Live music at night - tends toward rockabilly and country. Swing dancing once a week, Tuesday nights I believe. General crowd skews older and they do play a lot of country music.
http://www.barneysbeanery.com/ (BARNEY'S BEANERY) - Probably my favorite location of theirs. The space is ridiculously huge and split up into many areas. 2 pool tables, some video games. Monstrous food menu (food is decent), monstrous beer menu, full bar. Vibe is loud and fun. Definitely a sports bar, but super lively at night. Music ranges from 80s dance to top 40 pop/rap.
NO HO
http://www.vintagebargroup.com/nobar.html (NO BAR) - Loungy, nicely decorated atmosphere split into 3 rooms. Normal everyday beers and full bar. 1 pool table. GREAT jukebox. Crowd gets a bit douchey as it gets super crowded after 11pm on weekend nights, but the vibe is generally pretty good.
http://www.tongahut.com/ (TONGA HUT) - I LOVE this place! Has a very kitchsy 50s tiki feel with huge tiki statues and tacky decoations. Eclectic to the point of being strange jukebox. Amazing, strong tiki drinks and super cheap beer. Generally has a super laid back locals-only working lcass kind of crowd. They do get DJs sometimes at night on the weekend.
SHERMAN OAKS
http://www.thelocalpeasant.com/ (THE LOCAL PEASANT) - excellent gastro pub! Nice layout inside, great food, good beer list, and great specialty cocktails! 1-2 hour wait to sit after 8pm on the weekends, but mellow and nice during the week.
http://www.bratsbrothers.com/ (BRATS BROTHERS) - German sausage and beer bar to give Wurstkuche a run for its money Insane brat list, great craft beers and on-tap german bees, great happy hour specials, the bexst pretzels i've ever tasted. Decor is cheesy Bavarian kitsch. Super nice owners.
okay, enough for now.

The Verdugo Bar is awesome over in the south glendale / Eagle rock area, but on some nights they bring in DJ's who spin way too loud house music and it changes the vibe too much to enjoy. But on nights without a DJ they play like Talking heads and radiohead, have good prices, good selection, multiple seating areas, and tvs showing old movies in the background. good vibe.
I also dig the Los Feliz bar strip which contains The Griffin, The Roost, and Big Foot Lodge. But I live in Glendale and have only been out here a year so I'm not an expert.

There's a lot of outdoor seating as well and I could see it being super nice during the summer. They have their 4 regular beers on tap as well as 16 rotating craft bees from other breweries. The food is very good, with a emphasis on sandwiches and fresh produce. Good jukebox. I'll definitely be returning!

I lived in Valley Village for about a year and the Firefox Room became my watering hole cause I lived right down the street. It's a local dive that draws a bunch of regulars, but also an eclectic group of of all ages/demographics/etc. They have the new-school computerized jukebox thing which is lame, but they have darts and a decent crowd. They do karaoke there a couple nights a week so you might want to check ahead of time if you are/are not interested in that. http://www.foxfireroom.com/

I don't LOVE their own brewed beers, but they're good. The IPA is one of the mellowest I've ever tasted. The taplist in general is good though, and the space is just awesome. The Cana Room is a great low key bar in Downtown. It's really hidden and kinda pricey, but they make the best rum drinks I have ever had. This place is in a parking structure on Flower Street, you walk to the back of the structure and there will be a curtain with a security guard. Only sketch thing about this bar is the $20 annual fee to be a member, but if you can swallow the $20 the drinks and vibe are excellent. If you go on the right night there is a guy rolling cigars in the back..
Perch is also a great pace to grab a drink. It is just like the standard rooftop bar except it is not as smug and no cover charge.
I also like.. Broadway Bar, Seven Grand, Varnish, Bonaventure is the rotating bar in downtown at the Westin Hotel with sick views, Dublins and Bottega Louie.. There is more I'm just over writing now.. Check them out!

Tony's Darts Away sounds way different than the last time I was there when I lived in the neighborhood several years ago. God doesn't want me to drink anymore so I only go to bars when bands are playing. During a brief period when I was without divine guidance I spent a lot of time at the Redwood downtown. Still do but now only for the music.

Yeah, Tony's Dart was a local hole-in-the-wall shit dive bar that went out of business and was bought by another guy also named Tony.
Also, OB Bear was fucking awesome! We had 13 people totally stuff full of food and 6 big pitchers of Hite and the total bill was $205 before tip. The hot wings are literally some of the best I've ever had (but holy shit they are hot and will give you gas pains the next day), the spicy squid was noodles was great, and the sacllion potato pancakes we amazing! We also had 3 orders of fried chicken, but that was pretty dry and I'd probably skip it and go for the pig feets next time.

I love the punch service at Cana...
Perch is a nice spot, but I don't know about the crowd it typically attracts. Only time I've really gone is during happy hour. Seen lines outside the place at night, and... well... I have no interest in waiting in a line for a bar. If there's some sort of live music aspect or DJ or something that I'm interested in, sure... but if the place is just a bar... I don't see the point.

Ya I was reading about Cana and thought that punch service sounded fantastic. I totally agree with you about waiting in line for a bar, I'm not down at all either. But Perch's happy hour sounds pretty good: $7 cocktails and apparently HORS-D'OEUVRES are like $4-$8
Drinkey McDrinkerstein
02-28-2012, 10:43 AM
it's just totally different. Perch is much more of a restaurant/lounge whereas the Standard is more of a party spot. Perch is still fairly new and finding itself crowdwise, so it seemed pretty chill when i went, but they definitely cater to an upscale audience. It's sort of "fancy" in their cocktail and food offerings and very expensive, just as much if not moreso than the Standard.

^ Re: Perch. Went a few months ago. Loved it. The cuisine was gastropub-ish French with a California twist... I guess. Nice cocktails as I recall. Lovely views. Feels a bit more upscale and mature and, as Drinkey said, not as much of a party atmosphere as Standard rooftop.
Went to Noe (in the Omni Hotel in downtown) during Dine LA Week. Beautiful citrus yellowtail appetizer and great stuffed cornish game hen. I think their menu changes constantly, though, so those items might not be available. The best part, though, is if you exit through the front entrance of the Omni and ask the doorman for a cab, he might mistake you for a hotel guest and offer you the hotel limo instead. You'll feel just like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman.

I really want to check that place out! owned by the Surly Goat/Verdugo Bar people.
I went back today and had lunch. Outstanding food! The service was fine but I was there in the afternoon on a Sunday though so not crowded at all. I guess that is the knock in some of the Yelp reviews I have read that don't give it 4+ stars.
Anyway, had the following
CREAM OF ASPARAGUS SOUP-
Hot and hearty with a nice creamy texture. But then asparagus is my fave vegetable so it's hard to turn me off it unless it's really screwed up.
HOUSE SMOKED SALMON, GRILLED TOAST, ONION, CAPER, LEMON-
They smoke their own salmon here and it is all that. And I do mean... ALL THAT! Just great, great flavor. Really fresh and not too smokey. I could have eaten a second order, no problem. The onion/lemon/caper concoction was a spreadable paste. Great compliment to the fish.
LIEGEOISE SALAD, HARICOT VERT BEANS, FINGERLING POTATOES, FRISEE, SLICED RADISH, PARSLEY, PANCETTA, RED WINE VINEGAR-
Probably my least favorite item but still delicious, if nothing special. The little chunks of Pancetta are what makes it worthwhile. After a while I found myself digging around for them.
BEER-
Continuing on with my newly acquired taste for sour beer, I tried New Belgium's Lo Folie (on tap). SOUR SOUR SOUR! I loved it! Beers aren't cheap here- this one was $7 for a short glass. But I just don't care. A great beer if you are down with the Flander's Red style of brew.
Definitely going back soon. Nice it's within walking distance of home.

Maybe not even that! When I read the Yelp reviews, it's almost like people posting there are bipolar... "I loved the place! Not sure if I would go back..." I got a headache just reading them. I get it. Service matters. A lot. But even people who acknowledged it was a new place and did not expect the best still dinged the place for slow service. Puzzling. It's terrific.

I've been there three times already hah. The truffle burger is definitely the best. Try out the frys covered in brainaise (mayo with pig brain and something else), it's actually pretty good. Alot of the stuff at the pig place is good too, like the crispy pig ears. And the donuts are obviously awesome but super sweet but not that great after eating burgers and beer, so heavy.
Also, the Los Angeles Brewing Company opens up tomorrow right across the street: http://la.eater.com/archives/2012/03/16/8000_square_feet_of_beer_now_brewing_downtown.php

I mean, they could have a better selection of Dogfish Head on tap, but that's the East Coaster in me speaking... Most of the time I'm just happy to see anyone carry DFH on tap out this way. So I can not be mad about this!

Think we talked about Urbano earlier in this thread. Real good place and menu. I just made a res for this event. Suggest some of you foodies do the same if you got the scratch!
DOWNTOWN— Chefs Bruce Kalman (Urbano Pizza Bar) and Gavin Mills (Wood + Vine) have launched a new dinner series called Cooking with Friends. Their inaugural meal takes place on April 1 at Urbano and includes a multi-course pork spread prepared from a free-range, acorn-fed pig by way of ReRun Ranch in Hughes, CA. Christina Perozzi and Hallie Beaune of The Beer Chicks will pair beverages. The $50 dinner benefits Alex's Lemonade Stands and commences at 4PM. For a resy call 213-614-1900 or email urbanopizzabar@gmail.com. [EaterWire]

Well, still soft open. Like we were discussing on it a few pages back, I am perfectly fine to give it a little time to gel.
If you do hit the swine and beer thing let me know. I traded a few emails with Bruce Kalman and then gave him a call to reserve spot. Very nice guy and he took time to talk me through what to expect at the event and even chatted with me about the recent direction Urbano has gone with their menu. He said since the pig announcement they are just over a quarter booked for it.
I find the Beer Chicks interesting too. Been wanting to participate in one of their crawls so this'll be a nice intro.

Think fast! I need recommendations for Korean BBQ in or near K'town. I know that's ridiculous since I live there, but I've only been to 3 or 4 Korean restaurants in LA and unfortunately they were all subpar.
Also, any dinner recommendations close (within a mile or two) to the Troubadour?

My personal favorite is Soot Bull Jeep (http://www.yelp.com/biz/soot-bull-jeep-los-angeles). SOOO yummy and cheap too! You will smell like you've been camping.

EDIT: BBQ is the preference of K'town; anything is good for Troubadour-adjacent.

Troubadour adjacent, you can grab something quick at Bossa Nova and i've heard good things about Flavor of India which is on the same block. If you want some subpar italian with a possible (old) celebrity sighting, you can also do Dantana's.

Enjoy SBJ! I don't know if you have much experience with KBBQ btw, but the secret is for everyone to just order everything together and share. you'll get to try more stuff and it'll keep the cost way down. I've been there several times with like 8 people, totally stuffed with food and much beer and soju and walked out for less than $30/person including tip. They're known for beef - the kalbi is expensive and in smallish portions but is to fucking die for, and the bulgogi is good and plentiful. I've seen some yelpers diss on the pork, and while it wasn't as good as the beef, it was good too. I haven't had seafood there, but that's not really what KBBQ is about.
