Bret Michaels Rushed to ICU with Brain Hemorrhage

By Anne Marie Cruz

Update Friday April 23, 2010 06:40 PM EDT Originally posted Friday April 23, 2010 04:35 PM EDT

Bret Michaels's health has taken a turn for the worse, PEOPLE has learned: After an excruciating headache late Thursday night, the star was rushed to an undisclosed hospital where doctors discovered he suffered a massive subarachnoid hemorrhage (bleeding at the base of his brain stem), according to a source close to the situation.

Michaels, 47, is currently in critical condition. "After several CAT scans, MRIs and an angiogram, [doctors] decided to keep Michaels in the ICU and are running several tests to determine the cause. [It] will be touch and go for the next few days while he is under intense observation," the source says.

Reps confirm this report is accurate, and tell PEOPLE, "We will have no additional information until further testing is done."

RELATED: Bret Michaels: Without Surgery, 'I Could Have Died'

The rocker's latest hospital visit follows his emergency appendectomy in San Antonio, Texas, on April 12. There is no word yet whether this new development is related to the rocker's recent appendectomy or to his diabetes.

After his appendectomy, Michaels remained in the hospital under his doctors' care then transferred to a rehab facility specializing in diabetic patients.

As he was recovering, Michaels who was still in the running to win this season of NBC's Celebrity Apprentice seemed to be in good spirits and updated fans on his progress.

"They told me that if I had gone on stage like I wanted to, [my appendix] likely would have ruptured and I could have died," he wrote in a note to his fans. "There is just no way around the fact that getting your appendix out HURTS. I have a pretty good threshold for pain, but this one hurts."

I've learned to love Bret. It's been a long road and a lot of ups and downs, but I'd be bummed to see him go.

There were way worse hair metal bands in the 80's (see: Winger, Trixter, Bulletboys, White Lion, Europe)... Poison, while they looked retarted, had some pretty catchy pop songs.

Seconded. Was always partial to Cinderella though. Tom Keifer had a great hair metal voice.

L O V E Tom Keifer's voice. I think Chuck Klosterman described it as a cat caught in the gears of a combine, but in a good way. Love Cinderella.

I'm a Skid Row kind of guy, though I think they may have made the transition to just heavy metal(ish) at some point early in their careers.

In Josh's defense, he may be required by Canadian law to feel this way.

liking nickelback at any point in one's life is far more shameful than someone liking poison at one point in their life.

rage patton

Not as far as I am concerned. Beside, Crispin is right. A Canadian is required by law to like Nickelback at one point in there life. Luckyily by the time I was 15 I found the loophole which lets a Canadian stop listening to Nickelback.

Don't get me wrong here, in my opinion Nickelback represent everything wrong that is with music today. I am ashamed they are a Canadian band. With that being said, Poison is just worse.

EDIT: Also, just for the record, I have no problems with Def Leppard and have been known to play "Photograph" at loud volumes.

I think it's an age thing. I mean, I can't think of anything more horrifying than Nickleback. Poison is just like cotton candy -stupid but innocuous. Nickleback is Hitler's band.

So I just got home from practice and sat down with my wife on the couch as she was watching the end of Celebrity Apprentice. I mentioned Bret's brain hemorrhage to her and she was legitimately upset.

This is a person that never liked Poison, but mentioned that he was her favorite person on the Apprentice. She was visibly upset when I told her about this.

This tells me two things: 1) she is woefully out of touch with pop culture news and gossip and 2) she may have a stronger emotional attachment to the author of "Unskinny Bop" and "Talk Dirty To Me" than to her husband.
