View Full Version : Coachella 2010: Most underrated set?

ZackQ

Spoon. Nobody is talking about how hard they killed it. Brit Daniel and the boys from Austin are pros. And it was fantastic how much fun they had on the main stage. Too bad it was in front of a smallish crowd as everyone packed over to Phoenix....what other sets are totally underrated?

I'll definitely agree with Spoon! Also, Deer Tick and Deerhunter.

I haven't heard much about Owen Pallett even though he put on a fantastic set.

Spoon was great. I'm also not hearing much about La Roux or Club 75.

ZackQ
04-21-2010, 10:15 PM
Most of what I've heard about La Roux, is bitching about the tent being too crowded to even get in. Other than that, I heard it was a killer, killer set.

Gil Scott-Heron (perfectly chill as the sun went down), Yeasayer (first great set of the weekend for me).

Vic Viper
04-21-2010, 10:32 PM
gil scott-heron. i feel privileged to have seen such a legend of music and culture perform his craft at such a top level.

i think a lot of the crowd in there was waiting for La Roux, the applause for him did not equal my astonishment at how good of a show he put on, and for how stupid i was for blindly just walking into his performance instead of making it a point to see him.

Local Natives!!!! Pitch perfect harmonies and infectious percussion making all of their recorded material that much more powerful. They are on a slightly divergent path but definitely following in the vain of Grizzly Bear in this sense. I had high expectations and I left dumbfounded. Best set of the fest. Period.

04-21-2010, 11:37 PM
LES CLAYPOOL...that guy re-invented the concept of a bass guitar for me that night.

And I expected Pavement to draw a much bigger crowd than they did. It's too bad, they played a fantastic show.

Agreed with Spoon, BoB, Proxy, Old Crow Medicine Show and Dillenger Escape Plan

daxton
04-22-2010, 05:43 AM
You are correct. Spoon was great!!!!! Wish they had played I Summon You. That's my only complaint. Also, The Avett Brothers put on an amazing midday show. I thought Deer Tick was really good, but they just weren't intense enough for me to claim most underrated. Old Crow also killed it.

04-22-2010, 07:11 AM
whitest boy alive was some good stuff also.

I agree! I thought they were amazing. I danced my ass off, and then got hassled by a narc for rolling a cigarette that looked like a joint, but none the less, they were awesome.

Did anybody catch Baroness? They were fantastic. I also agree with Spoon and Gossip. Les didn't "re-invent" shit that night. He's been doing that for decades, but still cool to see live.

Street Sweeper Social Club hasn't seem to get any love on the boards, Tom Morello playing w/ his tongue.. pretty ridiculous IMO and they had really good stage presence.

I heard Street Sweeper from my camp, they sounded really good.

Honestly one of the highlights of my weekend was seeing Street Sweeper, Tom Morello looked like he was having fun, and he got WAY into playing their songs then when I've seen him with Rage or some of his other bands. Tom actually looked like he wanted to be there and you could tell by his stage presence.

Spoon was killer. What a great set list - they picked some of their best tracks from each album.

Not the highlight for me, but I was surprised by Passion Pit. I didn't know the front man could replicate those vocals live.

Save for a few songs, he couldn't.

Matt and Kim hasn't gotten enough love, imo. Spoon isn't a bad option either. I still want to say DEVO just because people are giving it love, but not enough love. That was seriously one of the top three shows of my life.

edit: Les Claypool was one of my top 4 shows of the weekend too but he's not getting much respect either.

PiL, if you were there you know.

And I have to say, underrated on the forums atleast, Gorillaz. They proved to be an amazing live band without any gimmick, just their strong music and some nice visuals. And the ending I thought was bittersweet and contemplative. I've been thinking about it all week, and it's left the weekend open for me which is a great thing.

the Raveonettes.

No one I talked to after their set at other shows said boo about it, and I just shook my head. Sure, it wasn't their usual sonic assault - but it was made all the more special by the circumstances of the rest of the band not being there and their genuine love for playing in front of their fans stepping up and making up for it.

Blipvurt
04-23-2010, 09:21 PM

I'd say DEVO, FLYING LOTUS, and THE WHITEST BOY ALIVE....

All made my top 5 Coachella performances of 2010. Flying Lotus was scarily good. He threw down earth shattering bass lines and had some really crazy visuals going on behind. Loved the moment where some spaced out chick came next to him while he was performing and just stood there next to him for a good min or so before being escorted out by stage security.

The Whitest Boy Alive had so much damn energy and Erlend Oye is such a great singer with a ton amount of charisma. One of the strange Coachella phenomenons of years past have been acts playing during the token headliner set, bringin' out their A + game, and The Whitest Boy Alive and DEVO were no exception this year.

Both played to semi packed ( for 2010 , any other year their tent would of been half full) tents . DEVO came out and just destroyed the Mojave tent. Josh Freese drumming was sick and the rest of the band had so much energy for "geezers". They had the whole tent jumping by the GATES OF STEEL.

As with all great sets, each one of these sets had people waiting afterwards and screaming for more! The true sign of an awesome set!

when the few people who saw it, unanimously say it's a great show, it is not an underrated set.

most people here said charlotte gainsbourg was timid and that her/their set was boring - i thought it was one of the most charming/entrancing sets i've seen at coachella 2010. her smile near the end & that set's finale made it all memorable for me - if i have to do it all over again, i would be one of those falling in line during her scheduled signing at the tent.

This is all true except the last sentence. People can't help it that they didn't know to go. but damn that set was a great big huge bass-filled nuclear explosion.

Im surprised at all the Spoon mentions. I've seen them
3 times at festivals and they were very bland, I skipped them
this time and it sounds like they were GREAT.

I'd go with Old Crow Medicine Show and Avett Brothers

They had the whole tent jumping by the GATES OF STEEL.

Agreed, I think that was the climax of the best show of the weekend.

I thought Yeasayer were quite good. I'm surprised more people aren't talking about them here. Maybe they were all at Proxy...

From what I got from a few friends that made Yeasayer was that the crowd was shit, thus effecting the over all experience

Really? I had the exact opposite experience. i have rarely seen a crowd so positively receptive and going completely apeshit as they did for Yeasayer. After the extended version of O.N.E. that was busted out, the entire tent was going bonkers for like 2 minutes straight. it was really surreal. I thought it helped propel the energy of the show a lot and certainly helped me to enjoy it more.

I'm going to say Gorillaz. Everyone I camped with couldn't stop complaining after that show. "Recorded vocal" this and "no giant holograms" that. "Where was Snoop?" "Why didn't they play Dare?" "How come the band showed their faces?" "no crazy lights or lasers?" "I wanted some fireworks"

People built it up too much in their heads. It was a fantastic set.

I agree. People seemed to just create their own images of what the show should have been without any basis whatsoever and their own imaginations created crazy expectations.

I agree with Hot Chip. I have always loved their music, but they definitely took it to another level during their live set. I literally could not stop dancing!

I must say, for the first time in going for four years, I didn't see a bad set all weekend. That said, PiL was awesome. We were near the front, so I had no idea how few people saw them during Jay-Z. Oh well - their loss, right?

I feel bad about missing Gil Scott-Herron though. And Devo... was waaaay too tired from the night before to even make it through Muse.

And Gorillaz managed to have missing members due to the wrath of the icelandic volcano, but screw it, it was better than what most have been saying about it.

gil scott-heron. i feel privileged to have seen such a legend of music and culture perform his craft at such a top level.

i think a lot of the crowd in there was waiting for La Roux, the applause for him did not equal my astonishment at how good of a show he put on, and for how stupid i was for blindly just walking into his performance instead of making it a point to see him.

Without Doubt, Gil gets my vote, fantastic vibe on this set.

Runners up for me are some of the party acts...Gossip, Almighty Defenders (some of the worst behaved artists on the present day circuit doing sloppy tongue in check gospel covers...conceptual brilliant and loads of fun), Hockey.
