I couldn't find a thread like this so forgive me if I am double posting...

What are the biggest musical discoveries you guys made this weekend?

Personally, I was walking around early Sunday afternoon and just happened to stop by the Sahara tent and caught Rusko... my first introduction to dubstep. Fucking awesome. I also didn't realize how amazing the Specials were until I saw them live, even though I had already known about them.

Before Coachella I tought of all electronic music as a joke. After seeing Pretty Lights, Rusko , Mimosa , Bassnectar and Aeroplane I have a newfound respect. I also found out after partying Thom Yorke is probably the worst artist to listen to.

With you on The Specials, they really kicked butt ! Loved hearing Rat Race, Much to Young, etc... Maybe they can get an English Beat reunion with Ranking Rodger some year too but i guess thats a different thread.

For me Phoenix and LCD soundsytem were the biggest discoveries. I had downloaded a few songs by each before and thought they would be fun to check out, but didn't fully get or grasp them until I saw them. Sleigh Bells, Temper Trap also was surprised by, i had a song or two but didn't know what they looked like or would be like and had fun.

I hadn't heard of Local Natives, Jets Overhead, and Florence and the Machine. I like their albums and they were great live.

Also the Middle East and Charlotte Gainsbourg, didn't get to see them, but like their music.

white rabbits! i'm actually a pretty big fan of the temper trap and we were on our way over to see them walking by the main stage and help couldn't but stop and see their set instead. GREAT energy and so catchy, totally fell in love. i have no idea if they are big or not? only heard of them through their touring with here we go magic

I missed all of those sets but they are pretty good...I'm really suprised Jets Overhead haven't made it yet, they have one of those indie sounds that could easily go mainstream...bet the local natives put on a great show but i was stuck at the damn airport!

Kate Miller Heidke, holy shit. Did anyone else check them out? Her album sounded like electropop garbage to me but when she performed it was just her and an acoustic guitarist and she had an AMAZING voice (and was very cute).

I still don't know the name of my newest discovery. All I remember is it was on a day that wasn't friday, in the afternoon at the outdoor stage and someone was playing a violin... I think. Maybe it was on Sunday. Anybody?

I knew of Hot Chip already, but fell madly in love with them this weekend.

Wow, she was absolutely epic. I have yet to listen to her record, but my god, this was the surprise of the fest for me and might be in my top 5 sets.

Miike Snow and The Raveonettes for me. I had heard that the Raveonette's backing band was stranded in Europe, so the two people that were in the States went on regardless. Is this true? If so = epic win.

It's true. I was at sound stage for the Raveonettes. They admitted to being nervous but didn't want to cancel. They brought it w/ just a bass, a guitar and drums and their naturally great harmonies. Plus they look hot together.

I had a few discoveries but most noteworthy were Sleighbells, which I really liked recorded, but live.....I'm in love!! Rusko was a lot of fun, love the dub step.

Personnally I loved the water tent with the Dubstep Pumpin non stop! A set would end and you could hear the bass from water tent and party goers just screaming .

Other than that, Hockey, Perry vs Steve porter, the specials, Craze and klever, Club 75, Bassnectar, Hotchip, Glitch mob, and im sure a bunch more i had no idea who was playing.

And thats to not name all the big no brainers, like Hova, MGMT, Major Lazer, Guetta, Tiesto, Gorillaz, LA roux, Deadmau5, infected mushroom.

Cant wait to see the 2011 lineup!

No. They are completely forgettable. I'm also pretty sure juloxx goes to school at CU-Boulder, where Pretty Lights play every other day. Down by the bay, maybe we'll eat some hay. What do you say?

the only artists i had really no knowledge of that i discovered was 2manydjs. I really enjoyed their set, had me dancing, if i remember correctly it abruptly ended and was totally wanting more.

It was also nice to see how good Gossip have gotten.

Flying Lotus - too bad we only caught the last half of the last song...
Jonsi
Ravonettes (kudos to them for going on w/out their band)
Thom Yorke/Atoms for Peace - I have a new appreciation for him, the addition of Flea made the songs much more interesting!

SunDevil
04-23-2010, 06:24 PM
The Specials - had no interest in seeing them. Only caught their set because I was in the beer tent between the main stage and the outdoor. They really impressed me.

Ton of the early day bands that I'd never checked out really impressed me this year.

Kate Miller-H, Jets Overhead has awesome vocal harmonies, Hockey, As Tall As Lions, One EskimO were all excellent in what I saw...

B.o.B. and Matt&Kim were probably the most 'suprising' acts I saw. I def did not expect those performances and wow they just ruled the crowd and had such a great time doing it. But Kate Miller-Heidke would be a new discovery for me. She was fantastic and entertaining.

I caught a little of TCV from the main VIP section. I wasn't really into their recorded stuff. Just sounded sloppy. But I had to admit, they brought it live. i was impressed. But I still went to see someone else. (Can't remember right now).

Hockey- I knew nothing about them. They were a lot of fun.

King Kahn- Have their albums but never saw them live. They threw it down.

Florence and the machine- Her album is really good but doesn't compare to what I saw in the gobi. Fucking incredible.

Z-trip- Probably my favorite DJ set all weekend.

Troubadorjim

I was never really a fan of Faith No More, Les Claypool or Jay Z--Especially Jay Z. But I'm glad my friends insisted on seeing all of these guys because I'm still thinking about all of it. FNM had a few goof ups but it was easy for me to carry on. Mike Patton was on point.

Never got into the Dead Weather either. But after seeing footage from their performance I'm a little sad I didn't see them. Now that I think about it there were TONS of acts I wish I caught...

That's what Sasquatch is for though right?

there are sooo many different acts listed in this thread.

mine are frank turner,

and i guess passion pit. caught the last 4 songs from waay back in the crowd. the best sunset of the weekend and i thought it was actually pretty epic. thing is, their songs always annoy me when they come on the radio, i don't think i could ever actually get into it.
