Have a couple of cars going up on Thursday. Anyone else who is going up on Thursday, wanna meet up at UNLV or the M resort? That way we can have a big group of Las Vegans driving up and camping together?

What way are you guys going? Are you guys taking the freeway all the way down or taking Cima road?

Cima way is also they way I'm going. It easily shaves 45 minutes off the dive time compared to the freeway.

Also, traveling in a RV the road less traveled is always preferred!

When going down Cima watch out for the huge pot hole right when you get onto Kelso road. Its on the slight hill you go up right before you hit the train tracks. It is big enough to mess up your tires.

I'm leaving around 12 Thursday.

Cima is the back road to get to Coachella. If you want you guys can follow me when I go down there. It's a little hard to navigate if you've never taken the road before. I could meet you guys at the Jack in the Box next to the M resort at 2 if you want to follow me.

Just giving you a heads up that between 29 Palms and Vegas there are only two rest stops. The train tracks at Kelso Depot and one at Amboy that's it. Before you hit the 40 freeway and after there is usually a speed trap there so slow down in that area. Other then that its open roads with no traffic or check points at all.

Would anyone like to caravan from Vegas between 5-6p on Thursday? I'd like to try the CIMA route too but does the 45 minutes saved apply to taking it later at night? If I hit a a deer or something else roaming in the dark on my way it would really start the trip off on a bad note.

boboso

Cima road has virtually no traffic. You might see 20 cars on it and that's it. You probably won't hit a deer but you will have to watch out for coyotes and some times cows at night. I would not suggest taking it at night if you have never driven it before its not the best place to be if you get lost.

Awesome! If I wasn't dropping the kids off at the in-laws in LA, I'd be taking that route too.

I'm pretty comfortable driving in the middle of nowhere at night and my Google Maps directions look pretty good. You think it's worth the new route risk to save the time or just follow the highway? I would hope that I would miss most of the rush hour traffic anyway but the CA roads are so unpredictable. Two years ago I was set back an 1 1/2 hours because of a brush fire on the side of I 10.

If you feel comfortable in your driving then go for it. When I take it I usually make it to Coachella in under 4 hours and that's with stops.

Just remember this when getting off Cima Road watch out for the huge pot hole right when you get onto Kelso road. Its on the slight hill you go up right before you hit the train tracks. It is big enough to mess up your tires.
