Does Sean Penn's drunk slurred speech right before My Morning Jacket count? It sounded at first like he was promoting a good cause, but he made absolutely no sense.

Oh yeah, and TOTALLY agreed about M.I.A. in the Sahara (last year on main stage was a significant improvement IMO, and I actually stayed for the whole thing). Crystal Castles was also one of the few sets I've ever left out of sheer annoyance (vs. wanting to check out/see something else ... videos from their other performances seemed way better than what I witnessed at Coachella)

Some rappers a couple of years ago. 2 old great grandpa's rapping about hemorrhoids would have been better. They were so bad that half the tent was gone before their first song was over. If you want to call it that. At least that what it seemed like.
I'm sure Jay-Z will put on a much better show. I may even catch some of it if he doesn't conflict with someone else I want to see!

Crystal Castles are great in the studio and just god awful live. I just don't understand why she thinks she has to destroy her voice like that. It doesn't add anything, it just completely wrecks the songs. You can jump up and down and still sing properly for fuck's sake.

The worst act I ever stayed for the whole set was Audio Bullys since I was waiting for Daft Punk. The worst act I left after two minutes was Shepard Fairey.

MSTRKRFT in 09. The first half hour was alright but they proceeded to trainwreck two mixes in a row, just sloppy offbeat mixing, you know when the beats sound like a horses hooves going "clip-clop, clip-clop, clip-clop" like really terrible. I had to leave the tent in disgust, went and checked out the end of Mastodon's set, I'm not even into metal but it was 1000x better than listening to MSTRKRFT embarass themselves at the biggest show they've ever played.

EDIT: I'm a DJ so this sort of thing really jumps out at me. Most people had no complaints about the set...

Runner-up would have to be Plastikman. I know it's minimal or whatever, but I've listened to lots of Richie's DJ sets and I loved the minimal house and minimal techno he usually plays. I guess that is what I was expecting, with such a crazy light setup I figured he would play an energetic set with music that, while minimal, would be good to dance to.

The set he ended up performing could best be described as "Ambient Acid". what at first felt like an interesting intro/build turned into 30 minutes of squeeching, squelching, and sputtering that would pitter in and out of existence without ever building into anything that could be considered remotely akin to a "Beat". Absolutely no energy, I practically fell asleep on my feet before ditching to catch the end of Yorke.

I still don't understand the title of this thread. Do you not know what words mean?
lol'd

I've had the fortune of not seeing an honestly BAD performance so far. I only went to Friday on 09 and '10. I'd say the most disappointing was Camera Obscura and Gorillaz.

I've only seen one bad performance in two full years - Charlotte Gainsbourg '10.

Don't ask me why I chose to see her. Thankfully I left and caught the second half of Jonsi's performance, which was incredible.

Whoever said Jesus and Mary Chain was anything but amazing just ruined the credibility of this thread.

There was not one flaw to the performance, Great sound, the band was incredibly tight, the crowd got it. Yeah your right, that was really "boring" when Scarlett Johansson came up on stage and sung "Just Like Honey" with Jim Reid

Really hated Bright Eyes in 2005. Very boring and I missed The Prodigy & Black Star for him. Ugh.

Agree with Antony in 09 and La Roux last year. I was looking forward to both and left disappointed.

I'm gonna have to say Steve Aoki. Although... I have never laughed harder at a Coachella set. Mr. Aoki attempting to crowd surf with an inflatable and then quickly the crowd dissipated around the area he tried to do it in was one of the most memorable experiences as a concert/festival to date.

The Worst Acts I've experienced, one for every year I've attended*:

Dan the Automator in '02 - Don't know what I was expecting, but he basically just played a cd player, or maybe it was a record player...not even a mix or a dj set.

N.E.R.D. in '03 - Showed up way late, played 4 songs, shitty back up band.

I can't recollect anything really bad in 2004.

The Bravery in '05 - Walked by to take a listen, sounded horrible, the singer was so bad.

Audio Bully's in '06 - Waiting for Daft Punk...was not in the mood for this, and I even liked a few songs of theirs back then.

Happy Mondays in '07 - just a depressing mess, had to leave after ten minutes.

MIA in '08 - Her appearance in '05 was fun, but this was just supremely annoying.

Etienne de Crecy in '09 - The cube was the only highlight and that got old after ten minutes.

Sly Stone in '10 - Didn't experience this first hand, but the youtube videos paint a dismal horrifying show.

Absolutely. I've tried to make it through 3 of her shows (Lolla 07, Coach 09, ACL 10) with an open mind and find myself sprinting in the opposite direction every time. Shame on me.

Sly Stone
Perry Farrell's lounge act in 08 was pretty miserable

There's a lot of bands that were just kind of disappointing or bland or whatever, but those are the ones that jump out to me as embarrassingly bad.

Total agreement!!! Did people expect a light show, dancing rabbits, pyro techniques et al... wrong band.

Wonderful set list - saw them 4 times here and in the us on that re-union and each set was different but amazing in it's own way

MGMT, most boring band live, crowd was lame too

MGMT was so disappointing, and the vibe was so bad, that I threw up. They were a favorite of mine up until that performance and afterwards I couldn't listen to them for months.

La Roux was horrible as well...I'm surprised no one has mentioned that one.

MIA has been thrown around a lot for 09 and I agree. Dustin is right, "BER BER BERRRRRR" about sums it up. Crystal Castles was also a huge disappointment.

Last year, Echo and the Bunnymen were awful awful awful.

I don't understand how people say this was a bad set... I used to dislike the band alot, till I was on acid tripping my balls off...and I stumbled upon their set during electric feel and thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Apparently you were too messed up to realize that.... the only time the crowd got up and got excited was during Electric Feel.... All the songs prior to that, is how everyone got their opinion of the set.

Also Crystal Castles in 2009. So. Bad.

I don't see why so many people hated MGMT. Because they didn't play Kids? I thought they were good, but I like their albums.

When MIA played in the Sahara I left after 2 songs. Way too crowded. I liked her on the main stage the next year, though.

I agree that Aesop Rock was very disappointing...although, not horrible. Same with The Roots!

Morrissey did not bitch about meat throughout his performance. He made like 2 comments. It was a good show, not great. I've seen him do much better. I think there were technical issues here as well.
