Any thoughts on this? Cause I just realized that those that are parking their car on their spot and drinking could technically get an attempted D.U.I. for being near their car (if they have the keys). I'm not driving, but has anyone thought about this?

must you really think about these things? Your not gonna be driving your car anywhere...

There no law that prohibits u being drunk next to a parked car. DUI = DRIVING under the influence.

True, but if a cop wants to be a dick then he could write a ticket for attempted D.U.I. I know people who got D.U.I.'s sleeping in their car trying to sober up.

if you are drunk sitting in your car with the keys in your pocket, by CA law you can be cited for a DUI. It happened to a friend of mine, who was waiting in his car in a parking lot trying to sober up. I guess it you have an "intent" to drive, they can get you.

Keys have to be in the ignition. I have seen it both ways, one friend with keys in the ignition for heat got the DUI and another who was too drunk to put his keys in the ignition was let go.

This thread seriously exists?
Really?

All I can say is, if some dickhead decides to get in his car and drive while parked in the campgrounds he will get the beat down of his life by security.

Also, if your drinking, you have no business with your key's in your pocket. Put them somewhere safe. Car camping? Great. Lock your goddamn car if your so paranoid about it.

This thread is crap.

But, for the record, a DUI is given for "Operating" a vehicle. Keys or without keys.

If the keys were in the ignition I could see this happening, but not at coachella. The day parking lots are where I could see it happening, if anywhere.

WOW this is insanely rediculous. people need to just chill the fuck out! its supposed to be an awesome weekend and your getting paranoid.. why would you want to go anywhere? you have three days of joy and joyness. lol. just chill, smoke a bowl, enjoy the party. RELAX INTO IT and it'll all work out fine.

and the people who said you have to have the keys in the ignition to get a dui i believe your correct and the guy who said he saw or knows a guy that got a dui without the keys in the ignition, was it in cali? and i think thats illegal, also cops sometimes write down codes that mean something that you didnt do, ive been able to have all my tickets removed due to that factor. (luckily i was able to prove it) :)

How do you operate a vehicle without keys?

Young Biff: How do you know how to do that? Nobody can start this car but me.
Old Biff: Just get in the car, Tannen. Today's your lucky day.

Being someone who had a DUI, let me clear up a few things:

Keys do not have to be in the ignition and you don't have to be operating a vehicle to be cited for DUI. Technically, a cop needs to be able to show intent. If you are sleeping in a vehicle with keys in pocket and you are drunk, then they still may be able to cite you on intent to drive while under the influence.

With that being said, the organizers of Coachella are not stupid and cops aren't nazis. They realize you are at a fucking music festival and are not looking to drink and drive. I probably wouldn't recommend you put those keys in the ignition to turn the radio on, but again there won't be law enforcement out en masse looking to cite people for DUIs in a fucking campground.

So chill the fuck out.

this won't happen. people need to relax.

edit: unless of course you are in fact stupid enough to ATTEMPT driving your car, in which case you deserve everything you get for endangering people's lives.

I agree and it's a valid concern. Bottom line for me is ...cops can be dicks and they can do what the fuck they want. You can most def get a DUI when you aren't even driving. True story, cops showed up for an unrelated incident (a couple arguing), roommate comes downstairs visibly drunk, cops ask how he got home and he admits he drove and BAM ..DUI.

So you are saying leave your car keys at the camping spot? or lock your keys in the car? wtf

The cops will have check points setup for those leaving the festival driving back to their hotel, offsite campground or elsewhere. Campgrounds will have underage drinking & drug dealer sting ops going on...
You will have to be one STUPID MOTHERFUCKER to get a DUI at the campgrounds. A DUI would be one of a long list of violations you would be getting if it got to that point.

Um.. yes and no. Find a safe place for your keys. Put them in a locker, in a bag that will be safe, somewhere you won't have access to them.

I mean, if you want to be retarded enough to lock them in the car there's AAA service that will open it up for you.. hell it might work out better for some people out there.

I heard they decided to ban drinking in the car camping area, because of this thread.
