A girl at work told me she home schools her kids. I could feel the respect draining from my body.
I used to respect the idea when it seemed like it was motivated by a desire to provide quality education, but the reality of the real motivations are often sad.

How do you home school your kids if you're at work all day every day? Stay at home spouse?

maybe they work a schedule other than 8-5? Maybe they school the kids after their work hours? Maybe his coworker isn't a full time employee?

I knew a family that dropped out of the private school I went to to be home schooled. The youngest one was in Kindergarten. When he was 14, the mother became ill, so they tried to put him in public high school. The school resisted, because they thought he wouldn't be able to deal socially and would cause trouble for the teachers. They acted like he should be in special ed.

He wound up being the prom king. His older brother fronted a rock band with some public school friends of mine. The reason home schooled kids get a bad rep is because most of their parents are uneducated right wing religious nutjobs. Some people just want their kids to have a good education, and they have the time and tools to provide it.

I've never known, or known of (until now), a home schooled kid whose parents were not uneducated right wing religious nutjobs. With armaments.

A lot of my friends growing up were homeschooled on the exact opposite side of the political/social spectrum. They overcame it. Some of them.

I know a couple people who were home schooled. They all ended up at a public/private high school eventually, and a few of them graduated early and are very intelligent. I knew them through theater, though...so...there's that.

They actually WERE religious...I had gone to a religious school and they kind of led a revolt against the school and the church. But it was because the CHURCH was run by nutjobs.

They were not right wing. The mom was a former teacher, and the dad ran his own company. They were very into the arts and supported their kids in everything. Not sure about guns. They did ride motorcycles, but they were Hondas.

I'm not sure where my point went, but they were good people.

I went to college, and I don't own a gun. My younger daughter is being home schooled right now.

I never knew (until now) that there were no right wing former teachers or small business owners. I was also unaware that all right wingers hated both the arts and their own children.

One thing I was sure of though is that many of us nut jobs are good people.

Does it count if I lived in the boiler room at school occasionally when things got "difficult" at home?

That was in reference to the uneducated part. I realize that the rest of the post was a rambling mess. I really expected the motorcycle part to be the most confusing.
