as for the dodgers, the lack of player acquisitions/retentions is directly correlated to the mccourt drama. a pair of upper crust white trash, them two. nice when the owner's selfishness causes a team to, basically, give up their pennant without a fight. at least our hitters are good.

I still think their lineup is mediocre. Youk is the only solid hitter they have, peddy is ok. our bullpen blew it. shake it off and move on. I'm just pissed off that every media outlet is picking us last even though we are much improved from last season in which we finished 4th and especially considering how well we played down the stretch (mostly against divisional opponents) once we brought up the young guns.

The Padres did really well near the end of the season. They'll be in last place but not with the worst record in the NL. The Dodgers, Rockies, Giants and Diamondbacks all have great teams and is easily the most underated division top to bottom. From now till October it depends on injuries, chemistry and a little luck to see who finishes with a playoff spot. If anything, the Dodgers are underated this year despite having the best record in the NL last year and making it to the NLCS two years in a row. Just because they didn't make a big move doesn't mean that they're not going to be competative again this year. Go Dodgers!

I don't think this is a true statement.

Dodgers - will do well if their starting pitching matches last year's numbers. which I don't think is a given.

Rockies - Tulowitzki, Hawpe, and Helton are all studs. Seth Smith is solid. Streaky team that doesn't always seem to know where its head's at.

Giants - great rotation. no hitting.

Diamondbacks - hitting improved from last year, but pitching is very suspect esp if Webb remains unable to go.

im a big giants fan. we have strong pitching, but our batting is crap.. hoping the pitching can carry them to the playoffs or maybe get a mid season bat in a trade but as of now, its all about pitching and im pissed at our managment for not going out and getting a power hitter somewhere.. but im hoping for the best..

first few starts can be like that sometimes...not enough stamina to go deep...not worried about him though

the bullpen on the other hand, could potentially be a problem...if Marte is unable to return to form, they traded away Coke and Dunn, the only other LH arms they had in the pen

Joba, we'll have to wait and see for a little while. Certainly not ready to give up on him, but his star has certainly dimmed

I agree its a mediocre division. The Dodgers rotation is a mess with Padilla and is placing a lot of faith in Billingsly and Kershaw and I'm not sure if Billingsly is a top of the rotation arm. That and aside from Kemp and Ethier I'm not sure how potent their offense will be this year. D-Backs are interesting but they seem to streaky on offense and have some question marks in the rotation as well.

Rockies seem to be the most well rounded and stable of the bunch.

and Garland isn't going to be the Padres ace, Chris Young is and he's more of a number 2, but the back of the rotation should be strong this year and the bullpen is one of the best in the majors so that should help make up for the lack of a true number 1.

According to ESPN the Diamondbacks had the best off season within the division. I think we improved quite a bit with the addition of Adam LaRoche, Ian Kennedy, and Edwin Jackson. I think Upton, Reynolds and the rest of our offense will be much improved as well. The only real concern is Webb. Hopefully he'll be back in May.

It usually is a long season for a Padres fan. Jack Murphy was way more fun. It wasn't as corporate and family oriented. People would get wasted in the right field bleachers and go crazy, girls would rock bikini's out there, and the team was bad too so you could sit anywhere you wanted for like five bucks.

I went to Jack Murphy as a kid so I guess I couldn't have appreciated the tailgating aspect. With that said, I went to a coupe games at Petco last summer and was blown away. Both days were absolutely perfect weather and the whole thing was an incredible baseball experience. especially in contrast to Chase Field where I have had season tickets since the team was started. I hope to go back sometime this summer and catch a Diamondbacks-Padres game. AT&T park is next.

wow, this thread blew up today (as it should). back to some NL West discussion:
1) Dodgers - my team from childhood. Afraid they won't repeat this year unless their offense supersedes their mediocre starting pitching. Kuroda and Kershaw are solid. Billingsley has focus issues and Padilla and #5 are really iffy.
2) Rockies - much improved. Ian Stewart is primed for a monster year (and why I drafted him). They showed their promise at the end of last season. I think they win the NL West.
3) Giants - fuck them....right in the ass.
4) Diamondbacks - Webb sounds done. He almost seems to have given up after his surgery. Wtf.
5) Padres - boring. Although Everth Cabrera could break out. Otherwise, they got nothing.

Eat it, bitch... (http://sports.espn.go.com/newyork/mlb/news/story?id=5060292)

BOSTON -- New York Yankees president Randy Levine fired an executive-level brush-back pitch at Milwaukee Brewers owner Mark Attanasio.

Levine's message: Stop whining.

Levine believes Attanasio should stop publicly lamenting the Brewers' troubles in signing first baseman Prince Fielder while pointing out how much the Yankees spend on salaries.

"I'm sorry that my friend Mark continues to whine about his running the Brewers," Levine told ESPNNewYork.com in a phone interview Tuesday morning. "We play by all the rules and there doesn't seem to be any complaints when teams such as the Brewers receive hundreds of millions of dollars that they get from us in revenue sharing the last few years. Take some of that money that you get from us and use that to sign your players.

"The question that should be asked is: Where has the hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue sharing gone?"

The Yankees' payroll is expected to be about $200 million this year; the Brewers' will be in the $80 million range.

Levine made his comments in reaction to an Attanasio quote in a USA Today story about the average salaries of this year's players. Attanasio -- as he has done before -- made sure to mention the discrepancy in how much the Yankees spend on players in comparison to other teams.

"We're struggling to sign [Fielder] and the Yankees infield is making more than our team," Attanasio told the paper.

The Yankees infield will make $85.225 million this year. Third baseman Alex Rodriguez will make $33 million, which is slightly less than the Pirates' whole payroll of nearly $35 million.

Derek Jeter, who is a free agent at the end of the season, will take in $22.6 million. Mark Teixeira is scheduled to earn $20.625 million.

Robinson Cano, meanwhile, must survive on a measly $9 million.

Fielder, who is represented by Scott Boras, is a free agent at the end of the 2011 season. Boras' clients usually wait until free agency before signing, but the two sides are reportedly in negotiations.

In the initial seven years of the luxury tax, the Yankees have paid teams nearly $175 million in revenue sharing, according to the BizofBaseball.com. That is 92 percent of the total revenue sharing that has been doled out.

I wouldn't count on Wells, his reputation is mostly built on 2 really good years, 4 and 7 seasons ago. He might be a tremendous sell high candidate...offer him to someone while he's hot as hell for a top flight pitcher///someone may bite.

I think that Crawford is going to have a huge year in his contract year. He signed a below market value contract several years ago, so this is his primary chance to cash in. He's gonna run every time he gets on base and shoot for 75 steals.

NEW YORK -- The Los Angeles Angels' first day on the road got off to a grim start Tuesday morning when a man jumped to his death from the 42nd floor of the Manhattan hotel where they are staying.

About 15 players witnessed the aftermath of the apparent suicide when they walked out the front door of Le Parker Meridien hotel to board the team bus. The 39-year-old man landed on W. 56th St. at about 8:15 a.m. ET. The Angels' bus was scheduled to leave at 9 a.m. for Yankee Stadium, where they are playing in the Yankees' home opener.

Pitchers Jered Weaver and Matt Palmer, according to witnesses, were at a coffee shop across the street at the time of the fall. The New York Daily News is reporting that Weaver witnessed the fall.

Weaver declined comment.

"It's obviously traumatic when you witness something like that, but these guys understand the privilege of playing baseball," manager Mike Scioscia said. "I think when something like that happens, it just reinforces how lucky we are. I don't know anything about the guy, but obviously something was troubling him."

According to Angels publicist Eric Kay, several autograph seekers witnessed the man's death. The man was not a guest at the hotel, but asked to take a look at the hotel's pool, located on the top floor.

By the time most of the players and Angels staff members reached the scene, police had closed the street and covered the man in a white sheet.

"It was just sad," Kay said. "It was a surreal scene, like something out of a movie or a New York crime show."

"I don't know anything about the guy, but obviously something was troubling him."

Maybe Scioscia should get out of baseball and become a shrink.

ETA - More gruesome details in the New York Daily News...

A Manhattan man jumped to his death Tuesday morning from the rooftop pool area of a ritzy Midtown hotel where the Los Angeles Angels were staying before their Opening Day game in Yankee Stadium, cops and witnesses said.

At least one baseball player watched in horror as the 39-year-old man plunged from the 42nd floor of the Le Parker Meridien in an apparent suicide, his broken body landing on W. 56th St. about 8:15 a.m.

"In a flash, I heard a thud and I saw the body bounce," said witness Michael Norizsan, 45, who was sitting in his truck just yards away. "I couldn't believe what I was seeing."

Angels pitchers Jared Weaver and Matt Palmer were just crossing the street when the man plunged.

"Weaver actually saw him splat," Palmer said. "I felt kind of sick to my stomach...It's hard to see something like that and hard to take it."

Weaver refused to discuss the incident. The rest of the Angels boarded their team bus while cops were still surveying the grisly scene.

The suicidal man was not a guest of the hotel, but a former employee.

He told a lifeguard he's waiting for his room to be ready and after walking around the rail, jumped over , police sources said.

The pool, located on the top floor, is part of the luxury hotel's Gravity Fitness Center. Le Parker Meridien, at 119 W. 56th St., has 731 rooms and suites - ranging in price from $300 to $700 - with some boasting Central Park views.

As they were getting ready to face the Yankees, the Angels said the morning's incident puts baseball in a proper perspective.

"It's obviously traumatic when you witness something like that, but these guys understand the privilege of playing baseball," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia.

"I don't know anything about the guy falling down, but something was troubling him."

If not for David Robertson, that would have been a laugher.

the grandslam made his outing look worse than it was...Kendrick led off with a grounder that didn't make it past Jeter, Mathis followed up with a bunt single that just caught them sleeping, and Wood followed with a single that could have been a flyout if Winn remembered that Brandon Wood had already hit 2 balls in the exact same place earlier in the game...not like he came in walking guys or getting shelled all over the park. Paul, a 12-1 record is kind of a bad thing when you're a reliever.

How is it a bad thing? It demonstrates that you are a reliever on a team that has the propensity for scoring late and being able to come back and win games. It doesn't matter if you win games early or late, but that you win them.

And...of course we like Aceves. He is the most versatile pitcher we have. He can pitch middle/long relief for several innings, can pitch late in a ballgame, spot start..whatever the team needs. He has had reasonable success in every role the Yanks have used him in. He is not dominant, but I would trust him more than every reliever we have besides Mo in a crucial situation.

After the first game of the season, my Facebook profile was inundated with snarky remarks from all my pals who pull for Boston. Those assholes sure got quiet in a hurry. So satisfying, even early in the season.

Looks like my prediction about the NL West might pull through. Its going to be a dog fight for that division.

Halladay sure is enjoying the NL so far...

I think he's going to have one of the most dominant seasons we've seen from a pitcher in many years. He kicks ass anyways, and the switch in leagues...plus pitching for a team like the Phillies, he could win 25 this year

It's Scott....yeah, i was there...I was keeping my eyes open for you and a few others just from pics I've seen around here, but didn't get the chance to meet anyone

god, i'd love to see a 25 game winner, esp since it's nearly impossible for anyone to win 30 games now that a 5-man rotation is the norm.

humanoid

that would be pretty cool....

If anyone anytime soon is going to do it, Halladay has the most legit I think...pitching in the NL, with a great team defense behind him, and a very potent offense...could be the right combination of factors

When was the last? Bob Welch in about 1990? John Smoltz won 24 I believe, many years ago as well

the jinx doesn't work if an opposing fan talks about a no-hitter, that would be too easy

unfortunate, but oh well....fantastic outing for Hughes...if we've got a #5 pitching like this...I like it quite a lot

He has become a different pitcher since incorporating that cutter into his repertoire rather frequently
