But its not like they're gunna run up to you and start barking, most they're gunna do is act a bit funny and then BAM earthquake.

Quake upgraded to 7.2 magnitude; no major damage in valley

Officials have upgraded the intensity of this afternoon's earthquake to a 7.2 magnitude, new reports from the U.S. Geological Survey show.

The epicenter was 19 miles southeast of Mexicali in Mexico, jolting the Coachella Valley this afternoon but not causing any major damage.

Originally, officials estimated quake that hit around 3:40 p.m. was a 6.9 magnitude.

It hit in an area that has been rumbling with quakes all week, according to the USGS Web site. The quake was felt as far north as Santa Barbara.

Officials are warning the quake could trigger additional rumblings along area fault lines.

In the Coachella Valley, police and law enforcement crews were immediately checking area roads and bridges for possible damage, according to scanner traffic. No damage or injuries were reported, according Palm Springs and Indio police departments, California Highway Patrol and the Riverside County fire department.

“We’ve done preliminary damage assessments with our facilities: They’re all in tact and there’s no damage,” Riverside County Fire Capt. Lori Windsor said.

In Indio, police received two 9-1-1 calls after the quake from shaken residents. But they were not injured, authorities said.

At Big Lots in Cathedral City, several food items fell off the shelves and many of the 40 customers in the store ran out of the building, according to an employee who declined to give his name to The Desert Sun.

“We’re cleaning up now,” he said almost an hour after the rattling stopped.

At the Jensen’s grocery in Palm Springs, about 20 shoppers and some employees made it to the front door before the quake was over. with employees and it was over.

There was no severe damage at Westfield Palm Desert, according to Palm Desert Police Sgt. Charles Hoffman.

“No alarm systems went off,” he said. “I could see cosmetics on the floor at Victoria’s Secret — little stuff that was on the edge of shelves” on the floor.

“It felt like a 4 here. It did not feel like a 6 at all,” he said.

The quake caused Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs to sway for several seconds. Hospital administrators moved quickly, stopping elevator moments after the quake. Several people lingered in the hospital lobby.

“I was about ready to push the button to the elevator button when the earthquake hit,” said Kent Martin, a Miami resident who was visiting his ill father.

let's say you're standing in a place where there's nothing nearby that could potentially fall on you (ex. the middle of a big outdoor soccer field) and a BIG earthquake's (about 8.0) epicenter is right where you're standing.. is it possible for you to sustain significant injuries?

i was in my car driving in santa monica when it hit today. i was at a stop light and my car started swaying, almost like it was being rocked by some other car's loud subwoofer or something, but there wasn't anyone else around. i turned off my music and it kept swaying. i pulled over to the side of the road and turned my car off and looked out the window at a house to try and get a calibration of some sort. my car was still swaying but the house was standing still. so then i started to freak out and thought i had something seriously wrong with my brain, that was making me subconsciously imagine my car shaking. i started getting really worried that i'd need to go to the doctors to get a catscan and i was even getting embarrassed about telling my parents cause i've never had anything fucked up like that happen to me before. i was going through all these emotions driving down to dockweiler beach to meet up with some friends at a bonfire. when i paid the parking toll booth guy, he casually asked me if i felt the earth quake. i don't think i've ever loved a stranger as much as today. he confirmed the time it happened which was exactly when i felt the swaying. oh god, i was so relieved. when i got to my friends they told me how it almost looked like the horizon was tilting up and down, and we were thinking "well at least we're in the safest place possible for an earthquake, just out in the middle of all this open sand." and then we started getting scared about tsunamis. it was an interesting experience, this one.

Hm, about a week or so ago. Same Big Lots too. Honestly, does that place ever look like it hasn't been through a quake? LOL

Its coming... and you thought my earthquake @ coachella post was a joke.
Actually, I still think the polo fields would be one of the safest places to be during a quake. Of course maybe not with 35,000 people with various amounts of quake experience or knowledge. And let's be serious here...Imagine the Sahara Tent during Proxy's set...Ya think anyone's gonna notice an earthquake? Hardly...:dumbo

hypothetical question!:

let's say you're standing in a place where there's nothing nearby that could potentially fall on you (ex. the middle of a big outdoor soccer field) and a BIG earthquake's (about 8.0) epicenter is right where you're standing.. is it possible for you to sustain significant injuries?

Voltaire:

"Poem on the Lisbon Disaster,

or: An Examination of that Axiom

'All Is Well,"

1755

Oh, miserable mortals! Oh wretched earth!

Oh, dreadful assembly of all mankind!

Eternal sermon of useless sufferings!

Deluded philosophers who cry, "All is well,"

Hasten, contemplate these frightful ruins,

This wreck, these shreds, these wretched ashes of the dead;

These women and children heaped on one another,

These scattered members under broken marble;

One-hundred thousand unfortunates devoured by the earth

Who, bleeding, lacerated, and still alive,

Buried under their roofs without aid in their anguish,

End their sad days!

In answer to the half-formed cries of their dying voices,

At the frightful sight of their smoking ashes,

Will you say: "This is result of eternal laws

Directing the acts of a free and good God!"

Will you say, in seeing this mass of victims:

"God is revenged, their death is the price for their crimes?"

What crime, what error did these children,

Crushed and bloody on their mothers' breasts, commit?

Did Lisbon, which is no more, have more vices

Than London and Paris immersed in their pleasures?

Lisbon is destroyed, and they dance in Paris!

Rousseau's Letter to Voltaire Regarding the Poem on the Lisbon Earthquake,

August 18, 1756

All my complaints are . . . against your poem on the Lisbon disaster, because I expected from it evidence more worthy of the humanity which apparently inspired you to write it. You reproach Alexander Pope and Leibnitz with belittling our misfortunes by affirming that all is well, but you so burden the list of our miseries that you further disparage our condition. Instead of the consolations that I expected, you only vex me. It might be said that you fear that I don't feel my unhappiness enough, and that you are trying to soothe me by proving that all is bad.

Do not be mistaken, Monsieur, it happens that everything is contrary to what you propose. This optimism which you find so cruel consoles me still in the same woes that you force on me as unbearable. Pope's poem alleviates my difficulties and inclines me to patience; yours makes my afflictions worse, prompts me to grumble, and, leading me beyond a shattered hope, reduces me to despair....

"Have patience, man," Pope and Leibnitz tell me, "your woes are a necessary effect of your nature and of the constitution of the universe. The eternal and beneficent Being who governs the universe wished to protect you. Of all the possible plans, he chose that combining the minimum evil and the maximum good. If it is necessary to say the same thing more bluntly, God has done no better for mankind because (He) can do no better."

Now what does your poem tell me? "Suffer forever unfortunate one. If a God created you, He is doubtlessly all powerful and could have prevented all your woes. Don't ever hope that your woes will end, because you would never know why you exist, if it is not to suffer and die...."

I do not see how one can search for the source of moral evil anywhere but in man.... Moreover ... the majority of our physical misfortunes are also our work. Without leaving your Lisbon subject, concede, for example, that it was hardly nature that there brought together twenty-thousand houses of six or seven stories. If the residents of this large city had been more evenly dispersed and less densely housed, the losses would have been fewer or perhaps none at all. Everyone would have fled at the first shock. But many obstinately remained . . . to expose themselves to additional earth tremors because what they would have had to leave behind was worth more than what they could carry away. How many unfortunates perished in this disaster through the desire to fetch their clothing, papers, or money? . . .

There are often events that afflict us . . . that lose a lot of their horror when we examine them closely. I learned in Zadig, and nature daily confirms my lesson, that a rapid death is not always a true misfortune, and that it can sometimes be considered a relative blessing. Of the many persons crushed under Lisbon's ruins, some without doubt escaped greater misfortunes, and . . . it is not certain that a single one of these unfortunates suffered more than if, in the normal course of events, he had awaited [a more normal] death to overtake him after long agonies. Was death [in the ruins] a sadder end than that of a dying person overburdened with useless treatments, whose notary and heirs do not allow him a respite, whom the doctors kill in his own bed at their leisure, and whom the barbarous priests artfully try to make relish death? For me, I see everywhere that the misfortunes nature imposes upon us are less cruel than those which we add to them....

I cannot prevent myself, Monsieur, from noting . . . a strange contrast between you and me as regards the subject of this letter. Satiated with glory . . . you live free in the midst of affluence. Certain of your immortality, you peacefully philosophize on the nature of the soul, and, if your body or heart suffer, you have Tronchin as doctor and friend. You however find only evil on earth. And I, an obscure and poor man tormented with an incurable illness, meditate with pleasure in my seclusion and find that all is well. What is the source of this apparent contradiction? You explained it yourself: you revel but I hope, and hope beautifies everything.

. . . I have suffered too much in this life not to look forward to another. No metaphysical subtleties cause me to doubt a time of immortality for the soul and a beneficent providence. I sense it, I believe it, I wish it, I hope for it, I will uphold it until my last gasp....

I am, with respect, Monsieur,

Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Aftershocks are continuing. Crazy stuff going on. i wonder if we will get any shakes at Coachella. I know it's normal for there to be aftershocks but there were several in the range yesterday and today in the 3 range in the same area.

They just had a 3 in Seely which isn't too far from there either.

I really don't know anything but I heard some crazy rumors about the possibility of something substantial (6.5+) in the next 2 days. This is like 4th or 5th hand information supposedly from someone possibly affiliated with the space program who was warning someone else to be prepared.

Fuck, i'm babbling. Lets hope it doesn't happen.

No joke:

I just recieved a couple texts from one of my friend's parents (?) stating that there's a high risk for a large earthquake to hit the SoCal area between April 12-17.

it's a hoax. you can't predict when an earthquake will hit.

it's a hoax. you can't predict when an earthquake will hit.

This. Earthquake predictability is only to the level of geologists realizing that there is a section of a fault line that hasn't shifted while the areas north and south/east and west have shifted. Even then, all they can say is "We'll, we expect there to be an earthquake in this area at some point in the future." Heard it from the first geologist to respond to the Chile Earthquake, himself.
And really, where else would you rather be in a earthquake: Downtown LA or a large, open field? I'll take the field. I'll grab onto a palm tree if a stampede starts.

It'd be some epic video footage if it started rumbling.

Actually it'd be way more epic if it were raining, and rumbling. Unfortunately the forecasts changed to no rain, just mid 80s heat.

You should of seen Bombay Beach during the quake, it was like they shook all the tweakers out of their houses like a box of cockroach infested cereal.

Did anyone feel an earthquake last night around 8/8:15 pst? I was in a movie theater and it felt like the room swayed side to side, and everyone in the theater looked around at each other like wtf? But it might have just been another theater's subwoofer or something.
