Is this a wise thing to do (since I will have lots of shade) or am I crazy for trying to put one together on the campgrounds?

DOOO IT!! If we hadn't run into a couple unexpected expenses, we were going to get a 10x30 portable car port. Al we have now is a gazebo thats 2 feet too long: 12x14. Hoping we're next to some nice people, otherwise no extra shade for us. HMF!

I just ordered one of these for about $40 - weighs about 10 pounds. Need to figure out a sheet of something to close off one side better.

It's by a company named ABO - I ordered it through Sierra Trading Post but Campmor has it too. Or Amazon. The reviews on Amazon were pretty mixed so might want to do some reading there. search ABO sunshelter - there's different sizes too. 12x12x12 is what I ordered.

How are you putting up a 12x12x12? Do you have two camping spots? or just hoping your neighbor will be nice about it? I was gonna buy one too but that thought stopped me.

Try Costco or Sams ... $30 is pretty cheap though.

You can adjust the base smaller, by tightening up the the straps that run on the ground between the three legs. This makes it taller. If you've got more than one spot, you make it wider and shorter, ideal for maximizing shade. It's actually really handy, I've got one and find that I use it more often than my EZUp because it's light and compact.

if you place one of the 12' sides exactly along the longer side of your 10'x30' space, the tip will only extend about 4.7" over the opposite side...if my math's correct (pythagorean blahblahblah).

granted, that severely limits the orientation options (morning sun) - but at least it can be done without going too far out of bounds.

some of these triangular canopies (like the alps mountaineering version i have) allow a bit of wiggle room with regards to adjusting - you might be able to pull it in a bit to 11.5'x11.5'x11.5' -- then the "height" along the ground across the narrower dimension of your spot will be within the 10' limit.

of course, this doesn't take into account the extra space you may need for stakes/guy lines/etc.

Seriously? a free-standing EZ UP-type canopy for $20? I tried a $25 canopy from Walmart last year and it was a pain. It was NOT free standing - four poles which had to be staked out with lines every which way.

The one I recently purchased is pretty much just like an ez-up. Except for where the poles come together in the middle, it needs to be assembled. $20...can't beat the price.
