I haven't looked at the link, but I like that Frank Black song "Los Angeles" (which is probably not even about California anyway).

Before Slap Chop, Sham Wow and Steve Porter...Vince Offer was a struggling comedian and filmmaker...
He made this song about LA...
From the Underground Comedy Movie..
It goes on forever and ever...

I think when you use the term "iconic" it should mean songs that most people in society would recognize. And most people in society have no idea who the Decemberists are.
AND really, NPR? "Led Zepplin"? "The Mommas and the Poppas"? Even getbetter could tell you that those names aren't spelled correctly.

I was a little pissed that while playing at the Hollywood Bowl, the Decemberists didn't play "Los Angeles, I'm Yours"

NPR intern Sarah Whites-Koditschek to the intern's natural habita
AHHH, it was made by a pandering entry-level hipster. Explains the Decemberists, the mispellings...
And WTF, no Joni Mitchell? You sure, biotch? And California Girls? Fire this girl immediately.
(ie: I wish I could work at NPR...)
