We were discussing this in the BMOTW thread. If the Beatles were to hold a reunion of sorts now, who would fill in for John Lennon?

John Peel is My Co-pilot

Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze

Sean Lennon for john and Thom Yorke for George.

The trad choice would be Clapton. They were good buddies and all. I'd go with Seiichi Yamamoto from Boredoms. He was the quiet but greatly influential member of the group, and his guitar playing, while not flashy, was really inventive.

that's what i was thinking. But who plays John is easy, but its not on this list. The answer is Jarvis Cocker.

I picked Damon Albarn because it is closer to Damon Gough, my actual choice.

I reckon Richard Ashcroft should be John, and John Squire, George

Tylerdurden31
02-26-2007, 06:24 AM
Julian Lennon is the perfect fit. He sounds just like John...more so than Sean Lennon does.

For George...someone that plays guitar well and sings...I guess Clapton?

I'd like to see fill-ins for Ringo and Paul also.

02-26-2007, 08:10 AM
are you referring to Zak from Hella?

Clapton would be a great choice for Harrison. I also feel like David Gilmour would be an excellent fill-in.

As for John Lennon, I think Damon Albarn would sound interesting.

TomAz
02-26-2007, 08:11 AM
I'm pretty sure he's refering to Zak Starkey. Ringo's son who plays drums for the Who.

randy ricochet

He also plays with Oasis. But yes Tom......and what joke was I supposed to get?

John=Thom Yorke
Paul=Colin Greenwood
George=Jonny Greenwood
Ringo=Phil Selway
Billy Preston=Ed O'Brien

That would be the ideal Beatles reunion.

TomAz

the joke was that Ringo and Paul are still alive, so getting subsititutes for them at the beatles reunion is a backhanded way of saying they suck.

Also can I say that I really hope that Paul and Ringo don't actually get together with substitute John(s) and George(s) and play? Cause man.

bmack86
02-26-2007, 02:56 PM
Lennon was actually fairly chubby during the early years of the Beatles. he was really self conscious about his weight tho. I bet he was fairly skinny during the last days due to all the drugs. Hard to tell from video tho.

agreed, george gets no respect... if you were going to make some sort of hypothetical beatles reunion, who replaces george should be as big of a question as who replaces john... and btw this thread is stupid cause no one can replace john or george.

Ringo does suck!!

he actually referred to himself as the greatest rock drummer around... which of course is a joke, but saying he sucks isn't necessarily true, his job was to keep time, which he did... he also wrote songs, and sang in a couple

Fab Faux - I Am The Walrus (http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=3027304A4D82117D)

I was with my Dad on a business trip in NY when Beatlemania first started on Broadway and to publicise it they did a "Rooftop Concert" re-enactment.I was not really familiar with the Beatles(or music) at that time but it was still pretty cool.I can't even imagine how cool the real one must have been.(Oh I was also in LA when U2 did their thing for the video of"Where The Streets Have No Name" but didn't feel like hassling with downtown.Still kicking myself about that one.)

Sean or Julian(It's only fitting) but why even discuss this? like its ever going to happen. OH for Harrison it has to be his son. Then you can sorta buy it being a Beatles Reunion. Hey like father, like son.

Ringo IS the rock and roll drummer. He brought the backbeat (snare on the 2nd and 4th beat in 4/4 time) to rock and roll. And the man technically isn't great at all (meaning that he's not very flashy), but he plays with more feel and swing than any drummer in rock history. And he plays with serious precision. He never misses. And he never overplays.

Ringo is brilliant.

Um... listen, relax a little. Ringo is a perfectly competent drummer. He never overplays because, well, he couldn't. Never missing is not a qualification of a great drummer--it's a qualification for a remotely good drummer.

Ringo did a couple of semi-interesting things just because he played goofy-handed--left-handed on a right-handed kit. Come Together has it's unique tom part in the beginning just because Ringo couldn't go the usual way around the toms. And I mean that--he couldn't do it. But it worked.

That being said, he's not a standout drummer in history by any means.

You a drummer, Tom?

I could play any of Ringo's parts when I was like 14. People who aren't drummers shouldn't try to wax insightful about great drumming.

frozen pilgrim
07-26-2008, 07:29 AM
randy, I agree with you.

as a drummer, the biggest compliments I could pay to ringo starr would be about solid meter and exercising restraint, but
-I'm sure he played to a click in studio
-in the context of the beatles era, compared to other top-40 acts, ringo's drumming wasn't all that restrained. it was just about standard.

but hey- a bad drummer can ruin an otherwise perfect band.
so the fact that ringo's work goes just about completely unnoticed is almost a compliment in its' own way- he didn't fuck up anything enough for anyone to ever notice, which is more than can be said for most drummers.

RotationSlimWang
07-26-2008, 07:36 AM
He's not a bad drummer. He did exactly what is primarily needed of the percussion section--keep the beat.

But please don't come on here and start talking about how great Ringo was if you don't know the first thing about it (clearly, you don't. Not trying to be rude, but you don't). Ringo's parts were pretty much identical for at least 70 percent of their entire catalog. I've watched a few documentaries on him and them, and he was never taught how to play correctly, not even close. That being said, he could keep the beat.

Does anyone give a fuck that he brought backbeat back? It's a fucked up way to play. All the songs he uses it on bug me because he's playing white people rhythm.
