View Full Version : Car camping site using Google Sketchup

I downloaded all of the models into Google Sketchup and modified them for size to get an idea of how I'll be using my space and to make sure everything fit. I'm sure there will be modifications based on Sunrise, etc. Took an hour or so to get everything into the space and another hour or so editing colors and stuff. I was even able to import it into the Polo fields using Google Earth to see the views and how and when the Sunrise and Sunsets will affect it on the exact days of the festival.

I'd be interested in seeing how others plan on using their space. This might give people some perspective on how much (or little) space they'll have with a car. I used a 4 door Toyota Camry but will be driving a 2 door Toyota Solara (sized to scale for accuracy).

This is very good to get an idea of how space can be used. Thanks.

For good-willed people looking to host potential strangers looking for a place to camp, keep this in mind, so you're not cramming 10 people into a single plot.

The mismatch between the color and structure of the hair in your avatar and the color and structure of the hair on the figures in your Sketchup is disconcerting, TheClares.

Also weird is that you have four chairs for 2 people.

Also I think the cars have to be oriented outwards.

Also this is awesome.

It depends on how you and the cars around you pull in. It can be done to maximize room. But other than that it looks about right from what I've seen at fests with car camping.

just think about all the people that will be camping with 2-4 (not 6!) campers. after this all adds up, there is going to be plenty of extra room for extra tents (I hope).

I am hoping I'll be able to swing the car around that way, so my inverter can be hooked up to the battery and I can plug in things directly without an extension cord.

I'm sure you can do it however it works best for you as long as it fits in the camping space. It's not like your car will be leaving anytime during the weekend anyway.

Sadly I suspect this will be the case. Looks like it from the way all the cars were parked at Phish. Now I need to test my inverter to see if it can handle the box fan on an extension cord.

having done bonnaroo the last 2 years, this is the perfect picture of how much space you will have... they will have the cars face out and you will camp behind your car.... you have plenty of space.. trust me.. unless you try to make it into some type of 7-10 person party then its gonna be rough.. but 1 big size tent and a car will fit perfectly...

You could simply get 2 pieces of 110 Volt rated electrical wire and splice and extension from your car battery to the inverter.

I went outside with some tape measure and made myself a 10x30 spot to see what it's like IRL. So the car* took up half the spot (the 2 feet on either side of the car aren't really usable except for walking and getting in and out of your car), so the remaining 10x15 feet could fit a couple 7x7 tents rather comfortably, or one huge tent. The best way to take advantage of all the space is to build some kind of shelter. I have to wonder about all these people hoping to cram ten people in one spot.

*the car in question was actually a truck that was around 15 feet long, so a smaller car will obviously give more space.

I did this exact same thing. I'm camping with 3 other people and I'm staying in my GMC Saffari. I'm also bringing a small t.v. table and a 10'x30' canopy with walls. I plan on covering the mini-van as well with the canopy. FUCK the heat. It damn near killed me last year.....ain't gonna happen this year.

Will the cars have to be in a certain position with in the camp spot? Reason I ask is i am arriving with a group that has about 8 cars and 8 passes and it would be cool if we could set up our area with the cars on the outside in a square and have one big communal area in the middle. Anyone know anything about this?

Even though they have to face out does it matter what side it is on. So if there are 2 groups could you have the cars on opposite sides to maximize the area?

There's no way the spots we were given last year were 10X30, I'd say 8X25 max with how close they made us park our cars together.

It worked best for us to share space with our neighbors and make a big tarped in shade area to chill and move tents under at night. It worked out great cause our neighbors were awesome and shared champagne and meds with us. Be flexible with your plans.

Hopefully they give us the actual size spaces we are supposed to have this year.

You might have been camping in the expanded camping. We were camped in the original camping area (where tent camping used to be) and we had a full 10x30 spot and it was marked and everything.

The vast majority of people had 10x30 (which still feels small when you park a 15 - 17 foot car in it), but the people that didn't have made it known, and I don't blame them

gooftroop
01-24-2011, 09:34 PM
we arrived in the dark and saw markings on the ground but were squished among them, say 5 cars per 4 spots or there abouts. It wasn't a huge difference but it definitely was not 10 X 30.

This year I got two spots and will just have to take separate cars.I think a lot of people (myself included) did this, to get more room, which could help explain why car camping sold out so dang fast...

Of course, having two cars just takes up that much more space, unless you're driving two minis or something. Then you'd have enough room to set up a general store of your own.

Thanks for making this thread. Right now I'm wondering whether I should tell my friend to bring his Tahoe pickup (which 2 people could probably sleep in) or just bring my tiny-as-hell 2-door Focus, which would allow for more overall space. Thoughts?

mountmccabe

I would recommend the Focus unless you really plan on sleeping in the Tahoe. It was very nice having a good walkway between the tent and the car, especially since it tended to get filled up with chairs, coolers, people, etc.

Also I and everyone in my camping group definitely had 10' x 30' spots: I brought a 10' x 20' tent that spanned the width of two spots and there was just room for it. The Clares had a 10' x 10' canopy up and it fit, too.

And our tent was at least 8 ft deep...there was still room between ours and your monster tent.

However, I can see how some people may not have gotten the full 10 feet. They were trying to pull us in close. I swung sharp and left a lot of room...the guy almost made me repark, but decided to move on. I think I grabbed a couple of extra feet.

For 3 spots or whatever we had last year, it sure felt like a lot of room with 3 cars, a canopy, the giant tent, and your tent. We really utilized that space well I thought.

Depends on how comfortable you are sleeping directly next to each other. I've seen some tents with 5 people practically sleeping on top of each other in them, while other tents only have 1 person.

Fourthisto

What would you guys say is the average number of people who could fit in a single car camping spot?Totally depends on the car and tent size. 8, 10 somewhat comfortably with a smallass car? I saw a giant canopy over about 12 sleeping bags one night. Looked a bit cramped though.

01-25-2011, 10:58 AM
Depends on what size tents you have...gonna pitch two smaller ones? Or pitch some giant tent that everyone will sleep in? If you get creative, you could probably fit 5 in one spot...I'm sure others squeezed in more. You never know, you might get cool neighbors who will let you use a bit of their space.

We fit 12+ ppl last year. About 10 people in a 10-person tent. I slept outside in a lawn chair and sleeping bag and was infinitely more comfy then those in the tent. I'd say 12 is the absolute max and 5 is about average.

12 people in one spot sounds CRAZY. I am glad we did not do that. We had half that in my tent and that covered two spots.

Even FIVE in one spots sounds very high. My guess would be much lower, maybe 3 to 4.

Our group had 10 people over 4 spots so whatever it was we probably brought down the average.

I guess that is one of the nice things about camping being sold per spot: We each get to decide how much room we'll accept against what we're willing to pay for it.

As for the 10x15 sketch, it doesn't tell you much unless you know what size tent(s) you have and what else you plan on bringing that will be outside of the tents. Basically if you have an 9x9 tent like I had in the original plan, you would have about 6x10 left for another. a couple of 7x7 tents and you are fairly cozy with some room for a couple chairs and a cooler perhaps.

This year I did a sketchup of our group's campsite. We will have up to 7 spots and a shade structure. We might only have 6 spots, but should still be fine on space for the structure, which measures 10' wide x 13 feet long (expandable if needed) x @8' high.

http://i721.photobucket.com/albums/ww215/theclares/coachella/coachellacampsite2011a.jpg

Shade structure with one of two shade cloths that will be on it (and adjustable depending on sun placement)

...and yes, we will have a larger variety of cars, tents, colors, seating and people.

Last year I was able to fit my scion XB (which is mighty short), a 6x2 ft table for our grill, and a 17x9 tent all in one spot. Made a shower next to my car with water dispenser + tarp, too. Luckily we had cool neighbors we would chill with, so we were able to put our lounge chairs in their spot to hang out. Though if we have stingy neighbors (god, I hope not! I like meeting people to party with!), the lounge chairs can go in the "porch" area of our tent.

We covered our spot with 3 10x10 canopies, and it was totally perfect. Also had shade covers to block the sun when it would move.

One thing I HIIIIIGHLY suggest to anyone is keeping their cooler in a shady spot, or even inside of your tent if its big enough.

Have you been to Coachella before? I was made to park with my car facing out last year. I can't remember if anyone moved their vehicles after being guided into their spots.

I can't remember if anyone moved their vehicles after being guided into their spots.Last year if you waited long enough you could pull it off... you have to wait til after the mounted "police" make their rounds and ask you to move your car 2" back behind the line or fix your crooked top hat. After that, anything was free game if you have space to move your car(s) around.

Hey I'm hoping you guys who did car camping last year can help me: in this sketch where would the sun be rising from? I had hoped I would be able to park my car and use it as some sort of shade for my tent in the early hours because I can't afford an E-Z UP.

The sun would be rising from the east.

east.

edit:damn you beat me too it.

You bastards. I only ask because I am trying to learn from my inexperience in '09. I went with just a tent and woke up at 8 every morning roasting due to the lack of shade. I'm trying to work around not having an E-Z Up this year, but if I could park my car so that it is between my tent and the sun that is rising in the east I would be a bit better off.

Basically, from that sketch pretend the people are walking east and that car is flipped 90 degrees. Is that possible?

How the fuck are we supposed to know what the directional positioning is in a SKETCH? Bring a god damned compass to the campsite with you.

Pretty simple here, I was asking you guys what your experience was last with car camping last year, specifically the location of the tent in relation to the car and sun.

No, you asked us to tell you where the sun would be rising in this sketch.

It's also very unlikely you will get to decide what direction your car faces.

Degausser
04-05-2011, 02:05 PM
Right I was assuming that the sketch came up based on the layout from last year and that it was a sketch of a set up on the Polo Field. Thus when I ask about where the sun was rising in regards to the tent it was as much a question about the sketch as it was the Field itself.

Thanks for kind of answering it though, I'm just trying not to fry.

PlayaDelWes

You could probably narrow the direction your car will face down to North, East, South, or West. I guarantee it will be nowhere in-between.

thefrush
04-05-2011, 02:40 PM
I believe all the cars last year were either facing north or south. I know for our spot, if you were sitting in the car, east was to the left. But for those parked in front of or behind us, the sun rose from the right. If the spots are laid out the same this year, the sun will either be on the right or left.

Hah, thanks guys. Just remember, if you see somebody crawling around in the heat in the campgrounds invite them into your shade if you can spare the room.

I will actually attempt to answer this. The Sun rose from the perspective of the viewer (and yes, this sketchup was actually placed on the approximate area of camping in Google Earth through dumb luck). As mentioned, in Lot 8 at least, all the cars were facing North or South, so using your car in this configuration will unlikely help unless you are in a narrow tent and try to park your car to the extreme edge of your site.

Yeah, I camped last year and saw some pretty ambitious setups. I am a little nervous about pulling that off though so we're trying to have some backup plans, too.

Here is what I came up with for our 3 spots....

Yes that is supposed to be mist coming from my misting setup I made thanks to the great misting system thread! We also have shade walls for our tents but I didn't feel like taking the time to add them...

Did they let you park like that last year? They made me and my friend park across from each other so that the backs of our cars were facing each other. You might want to plan for having two cars stacked and one on the side.

So is it safe to assume if you have two spots you have a 10x60 space to work with as long as

1. Two cars are in each spot (more or less)
2. facing the same way

The rules and what you ACTUALLY CAN DO seem very blurred.

Stickjohn
01-15-2012, 02:04 PM
No, you could have a 20x 30 space too. It depends on how they fill in the rows but they do want the cars facing out to the aisles. I think last year they had cars drive down the "center" of the double row and and they send one car to the left and one to the right (so no one has to back-up.)

Like everything, it can vary from year to year, worker to worker, location to location, etc.

Dustin da DnB Soulja
01-15-2012, 02:13 PM
Yeah it could be a variable you could have 3 spots right next to each other, or you could have 2 spots next to each other and one spot behind/in front of it.

Stickjohn
01-15-2012, 02:18 PM
Or if you have two cars you could end up kitty corner (assuming one of you was directly behind the other in the line of cars being parked.)

From FAQ

5. A minimum of 3 feet of clearance shall be maintained at all times while the cooking appliance is in use. No combustible material shall be within 3 feet of the cooking appliance.

I'm realizing now what a massive dicking fire hazard the car camping area is. A thousand stoned hippies trying to make pancakes on dinky portable hotplates, with a thousand cars with a half tank of gas, and very little water around.

The security guards on horses should take to carrying around fire extinguishers.

People making plans have probably never been to Coachella before.

On paper, they are great ideas. On the actual field, they wont work. You'll have to improvise when you get there.

People who manage camping for Coachella are complete assholes and very incompetent when it comes to you and setting up with friends.

Yeah some people had to move their cars after the security guys took off to other parts of the campground but basically we had this exact setup. They tried to make us park in an L shape instead but I just told they guy we had a setup planned and he let us move. Then we moved the cars forward and over a bit so they were closer together. I actually had a truck tent on the back of my truck (I used the actual cars we drove in my sketchup, F-150, Tacoma, and Mazda 3) and I used a futon inside my truck tent and it was AWESOME!

Man, the only thing I am stressed out about is making sure our two car group gets together in some way. So many factors at play. Oh well, might have to take some sweet talking the parking officials. Has anyone ever tried bribing as a last resort? I'd give up a twenty if it means we have adjoining spots.

moxie990

you won't have any problem keeping two cars together. Just get into the security check point lines right behind each other and stay together once you both get through.

I guess I'm mainly more worried about them parking people on opposite sides of the lane or if we end up catercorner because of how they are parking people.

The mismatch between the color and structure of the hair in your avatar and the color and structure of the hair on the figures in your Sketchup is disconcerting, TheClares.

Also weird is that you have four chairs for 2 people.

Also I think the cars have to be oriented outwards.

Also this is awesome.

I think he is planning the site for someone else, and hoping he can join. I have seen car parked in all sort of arrangements. Last year I saw a group who had six sites and surround the site with cars and had one huge military style tent. It looked like a middle-eastern style grotto...hookas and the whole nine...

Only one row is filled at a time (side by side). You have to be extremely lucky to get your two cars in the same group aligned back to back like your pic.

^This was the same set up as last year. We just simply asked the person directing cars if we could fill the next space over. Shouldn't be a problem this year, if not i'm gonna have to slip him/ her a big ole' fat Lincoln
