I plan on booking this wednesday. Has anyone called recently to find out if they have any overflow or primitive sites available right now? Any feedback would be great, Cahuilla is always a good time, this will be year number five in a row. GO GOLDENVOICE!

Everything is available right now. The online booking system gives you a false status of "full".

By far, the best place to camp. No city traffic into/out of the venue, no long shower lines (assuming they continue the no-overflow camping policy). Same abnoxious a-holes yelling "Coachella 2007 m-f-er!" all night though. Bring earplugs.

Really, they told me mine was the last developed one! haha, just booked today (jan.23)

Guys, they still have overflow camping, thats where we were last year, it's fine, u basically drive in and camp wherever there's a spot for u, no fire pits or anything though, the camp lady didn't mind if we had a fire as long as we didn't burn any more of the logs we found lying around, we had to buy bundles for 5$ each.
They have showers too for overflow, but i'll warn u, there's only 2 and they're not very nice. One doesn't even have a light, but I preferred that one when i was hungover cause it had a seat in it :D
There's also usually a pretty bad wait in line for the showers unless u somehow manage to sleep in a bit till after most have left for the show (the sun turns your tent into a sauna at about 8 am). The Lineup was probably about 20 minutes although it felt like 4 hours in that heat.
It's still THE BEST place to stay for Coachella had so much fun, everyone who was in overflow last year was awesome!

Devon

p.s. to the guy who needed a boost last year, if you read this, thanks for helpin us out with those mushies, Massive attack and Tool were a million times more awesome thanks to you

I was at Lake Cahuilla back in '05. We stayed in overflow but were in an RV, so life was good. We didn't have to worry about the showers or snakes or saunas.

All I want to know is where the Shuffle is.

Same here, overflow in '05! I'm not a camper so I just slept in the back of my SUV rental. Great protection from the desert winds. ;) I actually ended up camping onsite in '06 and the winds weren't so bad... wonder if the density of campers and the trees around the Polo Grounds broke 'em up...

I just booked three sites in overflow and the lady I talked to at Riverside County Parks said this is the busiest year they have had. Everything is going fast and it should be nice and crowded this year. Can't wait. LBC representin', fifth year in a row for me and Cahuilla.

Wzup Psychic. I like giving the info out as it comes to light. This increases the chances of it being crazy busy at Cahuilla this year. It's going to be exciting and I can't wait another 90 days. This is always the longest part of the year, waiting... I didn't check back today but I'm pretty sure they're almost sold out completely. Any info would be great. If not I'll tell my buddies to check on Monday. GO CAHUILLA!

I have a RV site reserved at Lake Cahuilla, we have 8 or 9 people coming with us, however you are only allowed 6 per site. Our Rv will fit everyone, but I don't want to be stuck not being able to get some of us in. Does anyone have a site reserved and not having up to 6 on it? if you are willing to share your reservation, please contact me at reneenyk@hotmail.com.

this is my first time to coachella..theres about 6 people in my group. we originally wanted to just do onsite camping to make things simple..but my friends dont wanna deal with the silly rules that go along with camping onsite. is lake cahuilla really the place to be? even for a first timer? what do you guys think? im lookin to book something today or tomorrow for my group.

Have you ever camped onsite? It's far superior to Cahuilla as far as I'm concerned. Haven't camped there in a few years, but when we did we were coughing for a week because of the dust AND we had to deal with traffic everyday as opposed to just when we arrived and left.

Onsite=nice grass, showers, walking distance to festival. no-brainer

The lady said there were 2 developed sites left when I called this morning so I grabbed one. I did Overflow(primitive) last year as a first timer because my brother wasn't 18 yet and it was awesome! We got there around 1am friday night, picked a spot and pitched a tent. It was fine all we did was sleep and shower there which wasn't too bad! The sun will hit about 8am and the heat will be unbearable but I think that'ss be anywhere where you're in a tent. All in all it was a cool place to stay!

When I thought about staying onsite, there was a line outside, and people said they had been waiting hours to get in, followed by a Police inspection point featuring Indio PD. Not my idea of fun. There isn't really any traffic in or out of Lake Cahuilla now either since they limit the overflow. And almost no line for the showers. I would say the dirt is the only thing that isn't awesome about Lake Cahuilla, but it all part of the experience, it's not that bad. Good people. Lot's of partying. Good Times!

5 miles from fields to campground is doable yes? I realize it may not be so easy after being on your feet all day but it might take less time than getting out of the parking lot. Does anyone know?

I've stayed there 3 times. You do not want to walk it. It is (one of) the only places south of the venue, so there is almost zero traffic on your way to the festival since everyone else is coming from the other direction.

I have Sat & Sun reserved at Lake Cahuilla; Site #CAH-048 (developed with electricity), and I don't need it now. It is on the outside of the develped sites so it looks toward the lake and primative spots.

http://www.rivcoparksreservations.org/reservations/flash/flashreservations.asp?parkId=4

Let me know if you want it because someone offered me $75 (it cost $43). You can have up to 6 people and 2 vehicles. With electricity you can run an air conditioner or fridge. That's plush camping...sk8mike

There are more trees than I would have expected in the desert however, I would not consider it "wooded". The Overflow has less trees than the RV spots.

there are a few scattered trees that are prime camping spots(for the shade), but they get taken up pretty quickly. otherwise theres some brush here and there and a ton of sand. and it's all at the base of some beautiful mountains.

Was anyone in here in the group of people in the overflow, that left Sunday morning Last year, cause they had finals or something. Anyways this dude climbed out of his tent and said "HOT TENTS!" It became a one liner for my friends and I. Whenever we talk about Lake Cahuilla.

orly? you probably aren't allowed to swim in it for other reasons, but this site says this:

Lake Cahuilla is located approximately 10 miles south of Indio. Take I-10 to Washington, south 3 miles to Highway 111. East 2 miles to Jefferson. Go south 3 miles to Avenue 54 and travel east 1 mile to Madison. Turn south to Avenue 58 then west 1 mile to the lake. The lake holds good populations of rainbow trout, largemouth and striped bass, channel and flathead catfish, and bluegill. Cahuilla is open year round from sunrise to sunset. Trout are planted from November until the end of March with striped bass and catfish picking up the summer slack. No motorized boats are allowed. The shoreline is easily accessible for bank fishing. There are three campgrounds situated along the lake and a dump station for self-containers. For more information contact Lake Cahuilla at (760) 564-4712. Campground Reservations (800) 234-7275.

Everyone seemed to like scooby snacks at Cahuilla last year!

Definately a no on the skateboard. It's pretty rough where there is cement, and it's mostly dirt and gravel. It's a pretty small area though, so you won't have to walk very far to get around.

I've got space for two people on my campsite, it's one of the non-overflow RV sites. MSG me if you need a place, especially at the most awesome campsite for Coachella. I don't want money for it, but if you bring enough of the right kind of snacks i can guarantee you a spot with us.

Devon

Does anyone know what the rule is as to how many tents you can have on your site is?

Can you park an RV in there? We're keen on some where to sleep.

ANYONE WHO NEEDS A RIDE TO THE CONCERT AREA FROM LAKE CAHUILLA?

Lake Cahuilla is about 10 minutes from the concert area. Roads get blocked, so parking is not likely. But, if there is enough of you that would like a ride to/from the concert, we may be able to pick you up and take you into the concert area (we have a pass to get past the road blocks).

Email for more info: coachellafest@yahoo.com

Happy Coachella!

What roads are you refering too? I have camped at Cahuilla the last 3 years and i've never had a problem with road blocks between Cahuilla and the venue. Is this something new?

This would be awesome! Laste year we hitch hiked there both days but coming back we had to wait over an hour for a cab after we walked about a mile to any roads were cabs could even get to.

I did see some people fishing there, they seemed to be locals, not Coachella people. I still however stand by what I said, I wouldn't eat anything from there. Good luck to you though.

Haha... The water is fine. The lake is filled by an aqueduct from the colorado river. It's primary usage is water storage for the water system, but they also turned it into a recreational lake. Any lake that is a reservoir has bans on motorized boats and human contact.

They do lift this ban on occasion, however. In fact, yesterday there was a triathlon at the lake, where plenty of people went swimming. The water is fine, and there's nothing wrong with the fish that come out of it.

I'll see you folks out there- last time I was there (for coachella) was way back in 2003! Not quite so crowded then, it sounds like it will be quite the party this time around :)

That would be awesome. One problem - I'm an idiot and I realized there is no chance I'll be able to fit my 8x4 ft. pong table in my 2 door car. I dunno, maybe I'll try to improvise somehow. Walk around Thursday night and if you see someone playing pong say whats up.

My friend and I are leaving a day early to go out there, we might have a chance at crashing at some Condo, we have a space reserved for fri-mon, should we chance it at seeing if its open for thursday night too and just pay the extra in cash if it is?

Also, there's just 2 of us, and a rather large tent, so if you need camp space, get back to me ASAP by private message with why I should let you camp with us. =)

I've taken a cab back from the festival a couple times. I think it was about $20. You have to walk pretty far to get a cab after the festival though. About a mile. It's best to just make some friends at the campgrounds, who are gonna be driving, and bum a ride. Thanks again Michigan friends!

I haven't camped at Cahuilla since '04... how's the scene after the shows been the past couple years? Back in the day there were some RVs with sound and a general party atmosphere for at least a little while at night.

Got my electric site reserved and still debating whether to commandeer the family's Tioga for the weekend. We might just build shade and tent it to save $$$

I've camped there for the past 2 years, 06 and 07. Everyone parties the night before, thursday night last year. One festival nights I would say about half the campground parties til around 2-3. I't pretty dead after that. I think 04 was the last year that they did the unlimited overflow. It's probably not quite as crowded as when you were there.

People do bring RV's, I'd say maybe about half of the developed sites. I've never brought an RV before my friends and I are seriously considering it this year. Last year some people projected a light show/visualisation thing on a big wall and they played music along with it. That was pretty cool.

what exactly is an "overflow site"? this will be my 5th year at coachella/cahuilla and we've always just camped in the regular spots with hookups...is overflow the same as the primitive area (the area closer to the lake with no electricity)?

the primitive area is like waaaaaaaaaaaaay on the the other side of the lake close to those rocky looking hill things.there are showers and random fire pitts scattered about here and there and usually less people around too. very cool to chill out and wind down from a very bz day at the show.only down side is that it's hot as hell and no shade and horse crap everywhere because of the horse stables neer by. also the road to the primitive area is unpaved and rather treacherous with no lighting at nite. we were lucky enough last year to have the moonlight help me and my buds find our way back to our tents.bring plenty of shade, water, ice, firewood and flashlights and everything should be dandy!

Actually it is right near the other sites, it's not on the other side of the lake. You can see if you look at the map on the Lake Cahuilla map.

blackchango
01-24-2008, 04:33 PM
yes there's that primitive area and then there's the "PRIMITIVE" area. I know exactly where you mean. Those sites are to the right of the general camping area and are paved with a little shade if your lucky enough to find a spot that has it. Last year I booked my reservation under the impression that I would be at those sites but was surprised when the ranger at the gate told me to make a left and I ended 4X4 ing to the PRIMITIVE area in my honda civic.Very beautiful part of the park however like I mentioned hot as hell and horse crap everywhere. Had a very great time! For those who havent reserved their spot do so now unless you dont mind camping on land that resembles the martian landscape.Been going to the show since 99 and have camped at cahuilla every year weather it be in a rv or tent. Coachella 08's gonna kick ass! Whatever your plans hope everone has a great time!

That's the right choice! Even if you don't have a fire pit, everyone is having fires. We usually just campfire hop the first night and get to know everyone. No one has ever not let us hang out at there campfire. Everyone is super friendly!

I don't know if this is the same as the "PRIMITIVE" primitive area or what, but I just called and booked a spot for the "Equestrian" area (I'm guessing this explains the horse crap). According to the Riverside county parks folks the spot does indeed have water and electric. They said normally the area isn't open but they are opening just for Coachella weekend. Sounded good to me.

They mentioned there were a few more spots left if anyone is still looking for something other than the gravel lot to the right of the developed spots.

I'm guessing that is Primitive, and the one next to the developed is Overflow. I don't think Primitive has fire pits though. I'd rather stay in overflow. It's right next to developed and there are a lot more people to party with, plus no horse crap. If Overflow is full though, I'd choose Primitive over on-site or a motel!

After my friends and i camped our first ever Coachella at Lake Cahuilla in 2004, we all swore to never return! We are some pretty hippie dr. bronners type individuals yet still, Cahuilla completely disappointed us. I had to bail out on RadioHead just to ensure that I would get at least one shower outta that weekend and I came back to a 45 minute line only to enter a shower with nothing more than 1" of pipe sticking out of the concrete shack's wall which produced nothing more than a dribble.

To this day I am the only one out of that group who has returned to Coachella and will continue to only because of good ol' Shadow Hills RV Resort. My other friends and I were smart enough to roll an RV last year and have all vowed to go again and continue the tradition after having the best time of our lives! We rolled into the RV park to a surprising amount of others camping in not only RVs but tents too, a swimming pool, full on real bathrooms and showers and sanitation. Lake Cuhilla would be alright if it didn't have "Warning Do Not Swim" signs all around it. On behalf of all my friends, spend the little extra $$ and go to a decent campground.

You left that Radiohead set to take a shower!? I had a hotel that year, because no one I was with wanted to camp. That was when Lake Cahuilla would let an unlimited amount of people stay in the primative/overflow area. That probably explains the shower lines. They now allow a very limited number of people to camp. I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes for a shower, and that's at like 8 or 9AM, which is prime shower time!. And the showers work fine, they aren't just a pipe sticking out of the wall. Plus, if you have an RV, you can shower in it, so why would you worry about the showers at the lake? You cannot swim in the Lake because it is a reservoir, but they have a pool.

P.S. What's a "pretty hippie dr. bronners"

Do the folks at Cahuilla care about people bringing alcohol in? What if there is to be some underage drinking? Are they the type to go around asking for ID or are they relaxed about the whole thing?

I made reservations at Lake Cahuilla back in December of 07 because I was planning on attending my fifth year at Coachella, however things didn't work out and now I need to get rid of my reservation. The dates reserved are from Thursday 4/24/08 to Monday 4/28/08.

The reservation is for up to six people and 2 cars, the spot is in the main camping area and is RV/Camper friendly, site is developed with electricity. The campsite number is #22 and is located about 4 spaces from the restrooms and showers, so you won't smell any icky bathrooms. The site has some pretty good shade as well, it also has outlets for plugging in portable lamps, fans, stereos, what have you. I camped here last year and its about a 5 minute car ride from the venue, you can bring alcohol into your camp, meet tons of cool people, and its located about 5 minutes from the a local store plaza & Ralph's grocery store (great for grabbing food or beer runs)! Anyone who stays here will have a total blast. But I suppose you already know all that fun stuff.

I'm just asking to get what I paid for the reservation, $79.00. Call or email for specific details.

If interested email me or call (510) 755-9358 (if I don't answer, leave a voicemail with your name and a working phone number I can reach you at)

I have a confirmation number, I don't think they can just cancel it. I tried to call but they are only open M-F. They are probably gonna charge extra for people who haven't reserved anything yet. Maybe they are gonna add alot of extra spots around the lake for that weekend to allow for more people. I guess we can find out for sure tomorrow.

We should organize some type of transportation to/from the festival.

It is a decent drive and parking a car is annoying at Coachella.

There has to be a bus company in Indio or Palm Springs willing to do this.

20 people each way @ $5 per person....that would add up real quick.

Last year I went with someone who camped with us but did not attend the festival. He had no plans for where to camp and he just drove in to Lake Cahuilla without a reservation on Friday and they let us camp there. Is this a common occurrence? Was it freakish good luck or do you think I would be able to pull it off again this year if I can not make it go right to make a reservation for some stupid reason?

CRAP! I have been checking the online reservations page for Lake Cahuilla and met with the same error box that says they won't be accepting reservations until late February and to call the number... I went on this message board yesterday and realized many of you have already secured your developed sites. How did you do that?! I called the number today and I just heard the automated voice answering machine and I pressed the button to make a reservation via phone but then the stupid voice just told me to go on the website. Is there a secret key you can press so that I can talk to a real live person? Help!!!!

There are outlets at ever site that is not in the overflow section. They usually say there are "quiet hours" but I have never seen them enforced. Everyone is there for Coachella and pretty much everyone is down to party. I've seen many DJ setups. A couple years ago there was a lightshow on a big wall aoutside the bathroom/showers. You can hook it up at my spot, if you play good music.

It's about 5 miles away, it takes about 10 minutes to drive there. There usually is not much traffic, because all the traffic comes in the opposite direction. Lake Cahuilla is sort of hidden behind the Polo Grounds, and there are no hotels between Cahuilla and the festival. I usually hitchhike with other campers, because I'm never sober during the weekend, until Monday morning when I have to drive home. A shuttle would be awesome, getting a cab back to Lake Cahuilla after the festival can be difficult! Even if they charged for the shuttle, I would definitely take advantage of it.
