has anyone ever had reserved seating at the Belly Up? were you in the upstairs area, or the tables along the sides? I've always been on the floor, never had to sit, so this is a new experience.

GrossMagic
04-28-2011, 07:58 AM
What show is it for? The only reserved seating I know about in the Belly Up is the Balcony over looking the stage. You are still allowed to go on the floor if you have balcony tickets.

tamaryn & raveonettes. my doctor restricted my activities, not allowed to stand for more than 15-30 minutes at a time. but at least I can still go. the belly up people are awesome and let me upgrade my GA tickets instead of buying a new set of reserved tickets.

Anyone doing J Mascis this Saturday @ Casbah or Mogwai next week at Belly Up?

Also of note, just added at Casbah:

Thurston Moore and Kurt Vile, July 30th

One of only 6 dates they are doing together, very cool.

Anyone going to Ghostland tomorrow at 4th and B?

And if you are, what time are you getting there? I called the box office and they said doors were at 8pm and not 7pm like the website states, which means ghostland might go on around 9:30?

Crystal Castles is playing Fluxx. Anyone seen a show there before? From the website, looks more like a dance club rather than a live music club.

kyleuga
05-06-2011, 08:56 PM
Fluxx is w/o question a dance club.

It's nice, sound is okay, drinks aren't cheap though. The usual crowd is just what you would expect.

That said, I'm def going to this show (I got some free tix from work, work at a hotel) Health is opening which is equal parts badass and hilarious.

This crowd should be quite the mix, and the reaction to Health should be priceless.

CC's live set is much improved too, should be fun.

Saw Crystal Castles last night at Fluxx. That band Health...their stuff sounds like all those Crystal Castles songs that I usually skip (the electro-noise stuff).

Crystal Castles was pretty decent. I had fun. Not as bad as most people on here make them out to be.

It was alright, lasers were cool but that fucking venue sucks. Went last night for TVOTR and the sound was unbearable. I am actually really mad and never want to go back to 4th and B ever again. I've seen TVOTR 3 times before this and they were amazing. I have also seen Ghostland before and they were great as well. The fucking venue ruins shows by their middle school, gymnasium, little kid punk sound quality.

I thought HEALTH were awesome on Thursday. Best show I have seen from them.

Crystal Castles was easily the worst show I have seen all year. Unbearable.

Sadly, I felt the same way as someone above did about TVOTR last night... What a shame. The sound was soooooo bad. They were great last time I saw em.

I don't plan on stepping foot inside 4th and B or Fluxx anytime soon, what awful venues.

Ghostland Observatory a couple of weeks ago was my first time at 4th and B and I really liked it. I like the space and general vibe in there. Maybe I'm used to LA shows where everybody acts like they don't give a fuck...

the El Rey might be "nicer" looking, but i have had very few great experiences there. something with the crowds and my inability to see the band from certain spots. neither of which were problems at 4th and B.

i guess i didn't notice whether the sound quality was up to par. it sounded good to me as i was rocking my ass offffff.

not sure what type of thing you're looking to do but some ideas:

Belly Up is one of the better venues, imo. Here's their calendar
http://www.bellyup.com/calendar/view/2011/6

Casbah is cool too
http://www.casbahmusic.com/index.php?year=2011&month=6

I have no idea who the people playing during those dates at Voyeur are but if you go here then avoid it thurs-sat unless it's someone you want to see
http://voyeursd.com/events.html

Kava lounge is a nice little spot and the crowd is usually pretty chill. I usually end up there for dnb/dubstep/bass artists but they have other nights as well.
http://www.my.calendars.net/kavaevents/d01/06/2011?display=M&style=B&positioning=A

The 1st Saturday of the month there's broken beat at Kadan (djs playing IDM/glitch/dubstep) but that may be on the 4th of June I guess....

6/11 there's this @ Dragon Lounge http://sdravers.net/showthread.php?t=56842

oooh and if you're a fan of dnb, Hive is playing at Ruby Room on 6/10. If I'm in town I will DEFINITELY be there.

Thanks unknown. Great suggestions I will look into those. The show at the dragon lounge looks promising, not familiar with hive but I do love me some dnb so I'll have to look into that one too. Any suggestions on good seafood or Mexican restaurants? lol idk if there's a thread on general San Diego stuff other than this one..

I was thinking about it but since I'm going to the James Zabiela show tomorrow at Voyeur and to LiB on Sunday I doubt I'll make it. I really don't want to endure 2 nights in a row at Voyeur on the weekend - memorial day weekend no less and I want to have a good night's rest before heading up to LiB to run around all day. Del Mar’s 2011 Summer Concert Series.
Lineup:
7/22: G Love & The Special Sauce
7/29: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
7/30: Ziggy Marley Presents, Reggae Legends - Concert & Beer Fest
8/5: The Bravery
8/6: Weezer
8/12: Jimmy Eat World
8/19: Devo
8/26: Airborne Toxic Event
9/2: Fitz and the Tantrums
9/4: Ben Harper

All ten performances of the Del Mar Summer Concert Series are free for fans attending the races. The Seaside Stage is a non-smoking venue. For Friday shows, as is the case with attending the races, patrons under 18-years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Patrons must be 18 years or older to attend any of the weekend (Saturday & Sunday) concerts.

Following the last race, concert prices are $20. No reserved seats, standing room only so get here early. Concert starts after the races.

I went to the adult swim booth right when comic con started and they made us wait in line for tickets then said they were not giving away tickets and to follow AS twitter. No tweets and obscurly found the ice cream truck tweet. Went there at 1 and the dude said the only way to get an invite is to find a big black dude with dreads on the streets wearing a "find me t-shirt"... They are making it nearly impossible to go to this show. :(

Went to the FlyLo show last night. Getting tickets was easy, you just needed to passcode from the Adult Swim booth (or anyone who already got a ticket at the ice cream truck) and you could get them with the ice cream. Was able to get two.

Fly Lo was pretty cool, played for about 2 hours.

oh and they give you 3 drink tickets too. cool party.

Girl Talk/Dan Deacon party was great. Definitely the best party of Comic Con that night. No real celebs there since Cowboys and Aliens World Premiere was going on. But, just a bunch of people really into it. Such a small place to see Girl Talk yet they still brought all the confetti and toilet paper streamer dudes. Del Mar’s 2011 Summer Concert Series...

All concerts will be held in a new venue, the Seaside Stage. The improved venue offers better sight lines, the Pacific Ocean as a backdrop and better access to concert-goer services and amenities.

the new stage set up is cool, sound is good, plenty of room to move up/around. the stage is angled sort of north-westerly-ish, so I doubt setting sun in your eyes (as mentioned by Wes) would be a factor. when I was there on Friday the marine layer was in full effect so sun wasn't a problem. security is pretty lax, no one checked my bag to get into the races or the concert venue area. lots of people with professional camera equipment. security did make smokers put out their cigs (no smoking once you go into the venue). for Friday concerts, anyone under 18 has to be accompanied by an adult and for Saturday concerts it's 18 and up only - I didn't see anyone getting their ID's checked.

Not true. At the Belly Up M. Ward is playing 4/16 and the Buzzcocks are playing 4/18. I've seen a number of Coachella bands at the Casbah and other venues close to the festival dates as well over the years, sometimes they allow exceptions for some bands in the "no compete" SoCal contract.

From CityBeat: "PLAN A: Cloud Nothings, A Classic Education, Lanterns @ Soda Bar. Last year, Cleveland’s Cloud Nothings drove critics wild with their fun, infectious, lo-fi powerpop. But they move in a completely new direction on their excellent new album, Attack on Memory, taking up the furious riffs and raw emotions of post-hardcore bands like Fugazi and Rites of Spring. I did! She was incredible, I kissed her cheek in the crowd and snapped this awesome photo:

Anyone going to Screaming Females tonight at the Che or Bar Pink? I haven't decided which one I'm going to or both. Kinda depends on what I'm doing around 7 (when the Che show is). I know the Bar Pink show is free so I'll probably just end up there around 9:ish.

Anyone going/want to meet up for some beers?

Crap, I hate it when you find out about a show after it already has happened. Unfortunately the smaller shows at places like Bar Pink and Tin Can unfortunately fly under my radar from time to time. Think I'm checking out Tennis and can't wait for Lotus Plaza next Friday @ Soda Bar.

Also somewhat newly announced:

Japandroids - 6/16 @ Casbah
Beach House - 7/1 @ HOB
M83 - 8/31 @ (unfortunately) SOMA. Think they are playing FYF a day or two after though.

I need your help San Diegans. I'm torn between 2 shows on June 3rd.

$27 - Mogwai at the Belly Up
$20 - SPF949 (Santigold, Naked and the Famous, Imagine Dragons, Electric Guest)

I haven't seen Mogwai since their set at coachella in 2006, but I haven't exactly fallen in love with some of the latest works. Still, they put on a great show. I've seen Santigold twice and loved her both times, and I haven't seen The Naked and the Famous at all. I'll be seeing Electric Guest at Make Music Pasadena, and I'm not that familiar with Imagine Dragons.

Oceanside is a little easier for this Temecula girl, but I haven't been to the Belly Up for a show since the 90s and it's probably time that changes.

Bought my tix for this one already. Any reason why you don't like SOMA? I dug the Explosions show I saw there last year... So fucking loud. It's a bit packed in there, but I bet it could go off for M83

I've seen a bunch of shows there over the years and currently living in the Point Loma/OB area it's right down the street. Guess I've never been impressed by the cavernous sound and the general lack of character. It's kind of a dump. I also hate to say it too, but most of my friends hate the place because it's all ages. A lot of the kids are severely lacking in show etiquette and it's always nice to have a drink while watching a band play.

The Santigold show is the way to go, only $20 and no service charges for a day of music by the ocean? Yes please. I thought she was super entertaining at Coachella. I really dig Mogwai recorded but sometimes their live shows can get stagnent.

Yeah, I understand your gripes.

I've never been to the Soda Bar but I think i'm gonna check it out tonight for Dirty Ghosts. Cool San Fran trio fronted by Allyson Baker (Aesop Rock's wife). Aesop acts as the producer. Their 2012 album is pretty catchy.

The upcoming shows for Soda Bar is kinda stacked to be honest! I'm gonna have to come back from LV a lot to catch shows, ton of people I want to see

Soda Bar (these are just a select few)
May 11th - Lotus Plaza
May 13th - Gauntlet Hair
June 3rd - Xiu Xiu, Yamataka//Sonic Titan, and Father Murphy (Sooooo pissed I'm missing this one...)
June 14th - Here We Go Magic (definitely want to come back in town for this show)
July 7th - Bass Drum of Death
July 20th - Quilt

yeah wow, diverse and good bookings. there are a ton i didn't list as well

Soda Bar is a dive bar that will get you as close as possible to the acts performing, it's a small stage and you can always say hi before and after the show. I know you can normally meet bands at the merch booth but the tiny bar and lack of a backstage makes it a neat atmosphere to congratulate the bound. The sound is the big drawback of this venue though, the sound can be off some nights and I've seen bands visibly perturbed throughout their set. That and half the crowd might be there just to drink, literally, the cheap admission is more of a cover for some people.

Apt description. The sound last night was disturbingly loud and I seriously regretted leaving my earplugs at home... I had meant to bring them, but you know how that goes.

I LOVE the vibe though! I wish that it was a packed house, but I can imagine it gets way more poppin' on weekends.

Not sure about the Ticketbastard presale password but on the official Beach House site they have a presale now for $25 total, $7 less than TM. Had to use Chrome or Firefox as it wouldn't work with Explorer for some reason though.

** Edit - Nevermind, got mine on lunch break but looks like that is over. Now it just links you to the TM site. **

Yeah, I just looked too. Looks like the San Diego date has been deleted off SOMA and M83's official site. Wonder if it got canceled or is being moved to another venue?

Yup, great description. While The Casbah is my home away from home for shows in SD, Soda Bar is still a cool venue. The beer selection and prices are way better than The Casbah. The sound is pretty good and you can always find a decent viewing spot. I dig the big area audience left. My only complaint is during the shows that I've been to there this year the crowds have been extremely talky during the sets, especially in the booths and towards the back of the bar. The Lotus Plaza show this Friday should be excellent, can't wait!

Anyone going to Xfest? I know it's pretty much all mediocre bands but I got my tickets almost exclusively for Grouplove (who I missed at Coachella) and Janes Addiction (whom I've never seen but feel they would put on a awesome show).

Other than that I have my tickets for Beach House and The Black Keys in October.

Lee Curtiss is playing a pool party at The LaFayette Hotel in North Park this Sunday. The group promoting it just hinted that there might be some other people from Visionquest down there with him.

RSVP Here to get in for $10.

I went to the last pool party this group put on with Droog and it was a lot of fun.

It's so incredibly amusing and well....so San Diego, that a year later they're all over this Visionquest/Soul Clap whatever scene incessantly.

Remember a few short summers ago when all these djs played electro-house?
