One of the things I miss about concerts in Phoenix are the incredibly intimate venues that certain acts will play.

For example, Caribou at Clubhouse I could be at Dan Snaiths feet. Here, Caribou's at Bowery Ballroom and Music Hall of Williamsburg. Same idea for lots of other bands (Yeasayer at Rhythm Room vs. Bowery Ballroom, etc..)

True. They're great and I'm looking forward to seeing them at Coachella but that'll be my 4th time and I've never seen Japandroids. Easy decision here.

Or should I try to keep that lead post updated with such things? Is there a desire in that direction?

Also I think I'm seeing Ty Seagell (sp?) And Soft Club (name?) And the Chandails at the Trunk Space tomorrow night.

I have seen a couple of Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers shows there "in the round" as they call it. It works realy well in my opinion. Much better than an arena show that sells tickets on the side or behind the stage.

I love Celebrity as a venue and wish it got used more often.

Most recently I sat second row and watched Erykah Badu on the rotating stage, unbelievable show.

I've also seen Wu-Tang, Deftones, O.A.R. (dont ask), Dilated Peoples w/ Jurassic 5 all with the rotating stage.

My favorite, however, was Primus doing a two set show wherein one of the sets they played Sailing the Seas of Cheese in it's entirety. Les Claypool walking along the edge of the stage abusing his bass was something to see.

I ended up buying 5 tickets for the Phoenix show, 2 people backed out last minute, and Sarah couldn't go because she wasn't feeling well. Lucky for me the show was sold out and I was able to get rid of the tickets pretty easily at the venue, but it was a pain in the ass so I decided going forward I am only buying tickets for myself, Sarah and me, or if someone gives me money for their ticket ahead of time.

mountmccabe

Brickhouse is closed down, so I say Celebrity.

Also Celebrity has a much higher capacity than Brickhouse ever did.

Also when going to shows at Brickhouse I generally parked right by Madison Street Jail; I'd say the increased cop presence would cut down on incidents.

Anything good on Friday or Saturday?

03/26/10 - Chamillionaire, Paul Wall @ Venue of Scottsdale
03/26/10 - Fangs, the Cullens, Russian Arms & Optics @ Trunkspace
03/27/10 - Devendra Banhart @ Clubhouse
03/27/10 - Sergio Mendoza Y La Orkestra @ Sail Inn

The Friday bill at the Trunkspace consists of local bands which're interesting (I've mentioned The Cullens here before; a (jokey) Twilight-themed horror punk band; if I were in the mood for a show that is likely where I'd be.

Not the greatest of weekends, I must admit.

Where: The Rogue Bar Scottsdale
423 N Scottsdale Rd
Scottsdale, AZ 85257

(480) 947-3580

This will be our last show for a few months while we take some time to write new songs, do some reekordin, and have another monde-baby. We have a special set and some surprises planned for this one, so come on out and bring all your friends. We play at 11:30 pm followed by Dry River Yacht Club. DRYC are a truly original local band that are playing at the South By Southwest music festival this year in Austin, Texas. They describe their sound as “gipsy music on a drunken pirate ship” and they have some really unique instruments (bassoon, saxophone, bass clarinet??!) and one heck of a great drummer who happens to be a good friend of ours.

Come kick of your weekend proper with some great local music and fun times at the only bar in Scottsdale that really matters! We’ll be there early about 9:30 to see the first two bands too Giant Cloud and Big.Fast.Easy. Please forward to anyone I may have missed.

Thanks for being such good friends and super fans!

4/10-11: Cowtown's PHXAM Junk Jam in Peoria

by Rebecca Clark - Apr. 5, 2010 09:58 AM
The Arizona Republic

Things will be heating up in Peoria this weekend, but the weather is not to blame. About 150 skateboarders from across the globe will compete at Cowtown's PHXAM Junk Jam at Rio Vista Skate Park.

PHXAM Junk Jam

When: Gates open at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 10, and 11 a.m. Sunday, April 11.

Where: Rio Vista Skate Park, 8866 W. Thunderbird Road, Peoria.

Admission: $5 per day.

Details: 877-CTAZ-788, phxam.com.
PHXAM Junk Jam After Party

When: Doors open at 6 p.m., show begins at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 10.

Where: Celebrity Theatre, 440 N. 32nd St., Phoenix..

Admission: $13.

Details: 877-CTAZ-788, phxam.com.

The two-day event started nine years ago as a fundraiser for Desert West Skateboard Plaza and today it attracts about 1,500 spectators each day.

"I was at the contest that helped promote and fund-raise the money to open up the first concrete park," said Shane Heyl, a skateboarder and member of the band the Goat and the Occasional Others. "To see it come from that to gradually grow into this huge event they have every year is pretty amazing."

Amateur riders have traveled from as far away as Australia and Spain to compete for more than $8,000 in cash and prizes. All riders have industry sponsorship or are recognized amateurs.

"Basically (you have to be) well on your way to becoming a pro," event spokesperson Laura Martin said.

The top 40 riders from the qualifying jams on Saturday will move on to Sunday's semifinals. Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place as well as for best trick.

Judges will be industry members and former professional skateboarders, including Matt Milligan and Dave Duren.

Several professional skateboarders are also expected to attend.

"In the past, Paul Rodriguez, Eric Koston, Rick Howard and Mike Carroll have come. So many different pros have shown up. This year, involving so much more of the industry, even more of them will be coming," said contest coordinator Trent Martin.

The jam format has changed from previous years to involve more street skateboarding styles. So the Junk Jam is making ledges, banks, ramps and other skateable surfaces out of refrigerators, washers, scrap metal, even a motorcycle.

New products and displays from companies such as Vans, Elwood, Skullcandy, Nixon, Shake Junt and Pig will be featured at the event.

On Saturday, the party continues late into the night at Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix with a performance by Bad Brains.

The all-ages after-party features professional skateboarder Tony Trujillo's band, local one-man band Via Vengeance, and Goat and the Occasional Others.

"It's almost like a dream come true. (Bad Brains) is a legendary band that I never thought in a million years I would be sharing a stage with," said Scottsdale's Shane Ocell, of Via Vengeance.

Only 1,000 tickets will be available for the after-party. They are available at the Cowtown Skateboards locations in Phoenix, Glendale and Tempe, Stinkweeds Record Exchange in Phoenix, Eastside Records in Tempe, Mastodon Professional Body Piercing in Mesa, and Celebrity Theatre
. Tickets for the skateboard contest are available at all Cowtown locations.

http://www.azcentral.com/thingstodo/events/articles/2010/04/05/20100405cowtown-phxam-junk-jam-peoria.html

1,000 tickets is much less than Celebrity Theatre's 1/2 house capacity of 1,400:

What is the seating capacity for the theatre?
1/2 House: 1400
3/4 House: 1800
In the Round: 2650

...which means this show is going to be intimate and awesome.

My wife and I were also at this show, mainly for Gogol but we like Cake quite a bit as well. It was very strange to seemingly be the only people excited and dancing for Gogol. The fucking house lights were on during their whole set and everyone around me was talking. Aside from Gogol getting the snub, it was a fun concert.

Cake put on an execellent show, especially if you are already a fan.

I've never been to the Clubhouse. Besides an apparently fucked up bathroom, what else is wrong with the place? I plan on seeing Edward Sharpe there in June and wouldn't want the venue to ruin the show.

sin213
04-30-2010, 11:42 AM
horrible sightlines and a subpar soundsystem.

half of the crowd has to stand behind the bar and watch the show thru the bar as its smackdab in the middle of the venue.

and if you do get into the front half of the crowd in front of the bar, there is a good chance you could be standing in shitwater from the bathroom.

the last 3 shows i've seen there, 2 of them the bathroom overflowed.

and what are you going for, faxy? tix are $55-200, and to get on the floor, it'll be at least $100.

Here are how the prices break out for US Airways Center:
LOWER LEVEL
US $55.00 - US $199.00

FLOOR LEVEL
US $99.00 - US $199.00

UPPER LEVEL
US $55.00 - US $75.00

Add $4.75 per ticket for the facility fee as well as the convenience fee, which I don't know.

sin213
05-03-2010, 01:55 PM
i think i'll pick a price level, instead of doing best avail, and hope to get a decent seat for this. the cheapest floor is going to be all the way in the back, whereas i'd bet you could get a seat halfway up the first seated section for $100 as well.

faxman75
05-03-2010, 02:03 PM
At this point my friend Ryan is dropping off $200 tomorrow. I need to get 3 tickets together for the Phoenix show so unless there are some radio station presales this Friday i'll just get in on the general onsale next Monday. So i'll be going with a price level as well. That's regarding Phoenix. I'm hoping me or Joel gets in on the Roger-Waters.com presale as we want to get 2 cheap seats for Vegas as well. I won't be able to get both this week so i'm thinking Vegas during the week if lucky enough to get in on a presale and then general on sale for Phoenix tickets with the top being paid under $200.

If I had an amex card I would get Vegas tickets out of the way.

05-03-2010, 02:08 PM
It would be nice but you're not guaranteed that on the floor either. All it takes is taller people to block your view. At least the seats are on a slope so most will have a better view of the stage. 100 level directly behind the floor might not be too bad. I think our Tool seats would be great too.

It looks like the floor will be broken into 9 seating sections, if you can get seats in the first row of one of the back floor sections I bet that would be pretty good even if you are short.

faxman75
05-03-2010, 02:22 PM
I have yet to see any of the floor seats be less than the top tier of $250. Any idea if maybe those further back ones are? Oops I didn't realize top tier in Phoenix is only $200.

Ok so Section 112 Row 19 is the $100 range. You can pull up tickets in the amex presale you just can't purchase without an amex.

So the pricing goes.

$200
$100
$75
$55

I just pulled best available from each of the price levels and here are the results.

$200 = section 113 row 1
$100 = section 105 row 19
$75 = section 205 row 5
$50 = section 211 row 13

I think I would be fine in the $100 range.

the $200 tix in the front sections are all front 10 rows though. hopefully further up the section in any of the side sections will only be $100.

I think 113 row one would be perfect, further back for a more direct view, basically on the floor except elevated to see over everyone else. I actually almost had these exact same seats for Jay-Z when he came with Mary J and they were great.

I wish they would color code it how the prices break out.

Okay, right after I posted this I realized they somewhat do this but I need more details:
LOWER LEVEL
US $55.00 - US $199.00

FLOOR LEVEL
US $99.00 - US $199.00

UPPER LEVEL
US $55.00 - US $75.00

That is what I am trying to figure out...I see on the AMEX Presale it does give you the option for $99 floor tickets, but there were none available when you click through.

I did a search for $55 tickets lower level that came up empty. Looks like my plan is definitely hope for the waters.com presale for the Vegas tickets and getting the cheap seats. Then in the general onsale Monday get $100 seats for Phoenix.

Honestly, I will be happy to just be in the building at either of these shows. Sure the better the seats the better the experience but this is one of those shows were the people in the back are going to enjoy this too. As long as i'm not literally in the nose bleeds i'll be fine.

I have been waiting for this! I will be there. I really only know The Beautiful Struggle album but I love that album a ton and want to see him live. I really dislike the Clubhouse but I'll have to deal.

are you going to go? i need a friend to go with me. i hate going to hip hop shows alone. last time during sage francis at the clubhouse some thug just sat down behind me & amy to watch us dance the whole show lol.

STP sounds interesting, but the fall frenzy is the weekend of a friend's birthday so i'm not going to commit to anything. plus, fuck weezer. go bore another city.

Yep, that's where we differ. If it's between the absolutley worst seat in the house or nothing at all, I'm gonna be there no matter what. The stage is going to be so huge and bright it's not going to matter. I'm also not going to end up with the worst seat in the house. Not even close.

Being directly on the side of the stage is really going to suck if you ask me. Even more so than a seat all the way in the back in a corner. Even all the way in the back up top you will see the front of the stage, those side views can be brutal (i'm talking directly on the side, not any of the section just to the front on the side) and it's like the band isn't even playing to you, same goes for those behind the stage seats which they do for some shows. Even then I would still rather be inside than not in attendance at all.

what were you planning to get in vegas?

I really don't expect to have all kinds of time to grab seats and throw them away and grabbing more. As close as possible most likely in the $125 range is what i'm thinking.

...plus, fuck weezer. go bore another city.

They were far from boring when they played the State Fair a couple years ago. I had been "bored" by Weezer a few times prior. But my wife hadn't seen them live, and tickets were less than $10 (whatever the fee was to get into the fair) so I figured why not, let's go check it out. And they far exceeded my expectations.

Not to say they won't suck when they come to town for Fall Frenzy, but I wouldn't write them off.

faxman75
05-04-2010, 11:27 AM
I saw Weezer a good 4-5 times on the Blue Album tour and somehow missed all of the Pinkerton touring. That said I specifically went to Coachella 2005 because of Weezer and Wilco. Both bands disapointed me and Weezer was beyond boring and had zero crowd interaction. I saw Weezer again open for the Foo Fighters later that year and they were better but nowhere near what they once were with Matt Sharpe. Matt was their teeth and i'm back in the camp that doesn't think they have been very good since Pinkerton barring a handful of songs. Last year when I saw Pat Wilson was no longer playing drums but playing guitar, I thought they slipped even more. Outside of an inexpensive small venue show or being part of some great festival lineup, i've given up.

I would love to see the Rentals though.

i am just not a weezer fan plain & simple. never have been. they annoyed the pants off me in high school. my friends all watched them at coachella in 2005 so i joined along. that was one of THE most boring performances i've EVER seen in my life. i didn't think it was possible to make island in the sun any more boring than it already is but they found a way.

i do like my name is jonas. so if they will be playing that on repeat over and over again i guess i won't write them off ;)

i just feel disconnected from the show up in the top level. it doesn't feel much different to me than watching a good bootleg dvd. the seats are cramped, people talk more up there, sound echo's in the rafters, i could go on...

Right on. I don't disagree with your opinion either, on all counts actually. It can end up being a much less enjoyable show from back there. No question. Jason, just an FYI. I pulled up the best available $125 ticket for the Vegas show and those are in the Upper Level or 200 section as well. Good seats are more than $250 bucks and that's just not happening for me. We may even be considering the $75 seats for that show depending on cash. We are going and getting tickets no matter what though just debating on which seats to go for.

i'd be ok with that $125 for 200 level at vegas...i know that vegas is gonna be much more $$ than most locations. $75 seats are gonna be against the back wall though. so go with $125 or let me know that you're gonna go for cheap seats and i'll get a $125 one separately.
