The Yelp reviews of Dave's Electric are making me second guess the decision on this meetup location.

Ok...want to go somewhere else? Anyplace down here is fine with us. There's a tequila cantina, Robbie Fox's, Blondies, Four Peaks even.

Edit: woah, those aren't the greatest reviews, are they?

I'm out for Little Dragon tonight. Portishead tickets + car issues make me unable to justify the expense, especially with having to get up at 5:30 for work. It's just not meant to be for me to see this band.

And Jen, School of Seven Bells is abbreviated as SVIIB. (VII = 7 via Roman numerals, see?)

i posted this in the phoenix thread too. but hooray for little dragon tonight! anyone want dinner before the show?

yay indeed! what time do headliners usually go on at Rhythm Room? looks like doors at 7:30...site states doors are usually an hour before show time, so 8:30 for opener listed. so maybe by 9:30? i'm not gonna be able to be out there til about 8 at the earliest...probably more like 8:30. barely get outta work til around 7 and have to run home before coming to show.

Is that Marnie Stern show at the Martini Ranch really at 6:30? Might it be over by 8:30 pm? Because that would be fantastic of the greatest order.

I will be in the Phoenix for this show and am leaning towards attendance even if I may have to leave at 8:30 regardless of if it was over.

Ok, let's do the Canteen place. Their patio, by the way, is freaking awesome with couches and junk. I also heard their food is pretty good.

little dragon was spectacular. i didn't get any great pics, but i'll post one or two when i get home. i took video of their new song "little man" and of "looking glass", but the sound is super shitty :(

i really enjoyed the show once it started. billygoat was quite late going on, which was annoying. they were definitely an interesting opening act. i dunno that i'd go listen to their albums, but the visuals were kinda cool to watch and some of the music was good. i <3 harps. lots of whistling though.

little dragon opened with a new of course which was so amazing. being in such a small venue was great. i loved seeing all of her facial expressions and movements. she joined in on the drums at the end of one of the songs. i'm so impressed with her live voice. it sounds just as clear as it does on album. i don't know the names of all the songs and i left around 11:30, but very much enjoyed getting to hear the ones i know and the ones i had never heard. summer tears was also another cool new song.

I believe capacity is around 250 for the Rhythm Room. Why do people want them at the Marquee or a bigger place rather than the Rhythm Room? That confuses me. Especially because Rhythm Room is one of the best venues in town.

We called and they insisted that doors at 6pm, show at 6:30 was right. They have other things going on that evening (DJ outside at 9 or 9:30; Metalhead inside at 10:30 pm) so the show will certainly not run late.

Capacity can be ~350 for the Rhythm Room. The Clubhouse is ~650, the Marquee ~1500.

Was thinking about it but after the money spent last week for ATP, the money bound to be spent tomorrow night pre-Interpol, and whatever shenanigans end up occurring during the Super Bowl, I'm going to say probably not. Hopefully they don't conflict with anyone I want to see more at Coachella, and if they do, so it goes.

And why was there a question as to whether Tommy would be at a pre-Interpol meet-up? I thought it wasn't so much that we were meeting up before Interpol but meeting up because Tommy would be in town and available to grace us with his presence.

Well, Rick, I'm in high demand. I had dinner plans, but that fell through because my friend found out on Thursday that she has to work this evening. So I had no choice but to go with my Plan Z, which is you all. Being popular is stressful sometimes.

Just got back from a nice hike and lunch with Ivy. See you all in about 3 hours.

my thoughts...

school of seven bells was good.

i was definitely happy to finally get the new! also leif erickson. i guess there was more i could have wanted, but that's probably because i saw them in october so i had more expectations of what i wanted. untitled into the new made the show for me though; those are my two favs. apparently stella is just not meant to be for me. wanted lighthouse, but prolly a good thing i didn't get it cause i started crying during the new and would have balled my eyes out to lighthouse. still lots of good songs like evil, narc, slow hands and take you on a cruise. also wish the people in front of me were shorter.

and pretty much agree with rick. soma show was better, so was lights.

my thoughts...

Balling your eyes out would be painful. And weren't Jen & I the people in front of you? You should've asked to be in front. We'd've obliged.

Some guy actually got in front of us to stand with his friends right after Interpol came on. He was right in front of me so I tapped him on the shoulder and said, "Hey, can you take a step to your right? Thanks." I said "thanks" before he moved to assert my authority and communicate that if the request had to be made again, it wouldn't be made so politely.

TommyboyUNM
02-07-2011, 08:12 PM
The crowd at Interpol was surprisingly hostile. There was almost a fight in the lobby while School of Seven (Sleigh) Bells was playing. Then when I moved toward the back during Interpol to hang out with Carrie, Beth, and Sara, some cro magnon gentleman on ecstasy body slammed a drunk guy right in front of us.

I thought the band sounded really good. I enjoyed the set very much. Again, I was shocked that they didn't play NYC. Slow Hands might have been my favorite of the evening. Or THE NEW. I'm confident they'll play NYC in Albuquerque in April.

There were a couple kids standing in front of us. They had to have been brothers, one of them 10 years old and the other probably around 12 years old. The older one kept pulling out his phone to record 30 second snippets of songs and post them on Facebook. So annoying, but since they were kids I tried to be patient.

Instead of trekking up to Las Vegas to watch the Black Keys and Big Boi, we opted to stay in town and catch Marnie Stern. She was at the Martini Ranch and doors were supposed to be at 6, which seemed early. We got there at that time & met up with John and his friend to discover that things were running late & doors had been pushed back to 7. We hit a bar across the street, I had a couple of beers, and when we returned, a bit of a line had formed. John and I went to see if we could find out when doors would open and managed to eavesdrop on a conversation between the venue, Marnie, and who I assume was a representative of Tero Melos (another band on the bill). The show had been promoted as an early show (hence doors being advertised as opening at 6) since today is President's Day and the bar expected to be "booming." They had a hard curfew of 9:45 and there was also a local band playing, which displeased Marnie and the Tero Melos representative, displeased them very much.

We returned to the line and were let in about 10 minutes later. The opening, local band was called Pack Rat and they started right away. This is the review I composed on my iPhone during their penultimate song: "All right. Either need an actual vocalist or not do vocals at all. The drummer looks like Garth from Wayne's World. The guitarist is really talented and makes me think there's more than a small Nirvana influence (especially considering his attire). Don't know why but I imagine the bassist is the prick of the band. I also see him as coming from a broken home. He lives with his mom."

To our good fortune, Marnie Stern was on next. This meant we would get home at a more reasonable hour. She and her band were really good, and her guitar playing was virtuosic in my layman's opinion. I recognized the songs as all being from her eponymous third (most recent) album though I don't know the titles. I had hoped she would play "The Package Is Wrapped" (off her second album) but it didn't take long for my hopes to be dashed since she announced at 8:50, a mere 25 minutes into her supposedly headlining set, that she was playing her last song. It was not "The Package Is Wrapped." Due to the lame early curfew and apparently shoddy communication between the venue, promoter, and bands, she ended up playing for maybe a couple minutes longer than the local band. Usually I get bored with an act after 30 minutes anyway so it wouldn't be too big a deal, but we had scored seats at the bar, didn't have anybody obnoxious around us or tall standing in front of us, and she was really enjoyable, so in this instance, 30 minutes was far from being enough.

We don't know how Tero Melos was because we left.

All tickets through the arcadefire.com presale are gone and have been gone for about 1 hour, I'm not sure where you are seeing tickets are available. And if so, let me know because I have a couple friends who need tickets.

It was not "The Package Is Wrapped."

The vocals from Pack Rat made me think of the late Peter Steele circa Slow Deep and Hard. And, yeah, their instrumental songs were better.

Also I am sure Marnie Stern played "Prime" from her second album and I would've swore we got "The Package Is Wrapped" a couple songs earlier but I was in a bit of a daze so, hey.

Regardless she was really good. And they had some awkward good banter. I'd really like to see a full set sometime.

mountmccabe

Also Sebadoh were great. I stayed for just over an hour of their set and they had hit all of my favorites from Bakesale (Rebound, License to Confuse, Magnet's Coil, Shit Soup.) Most (if not all) of the rest of the set was from Harmacy. But, as they noted, when they told their label that they were about to go tour for the upcoming re-releases the response they got was "what upcoming re-releases" so they had no CDs at all for sale.

I need to check with my friends to see how much longer they played and if they hit anything from the other albums.

Quasi opened and were fucking phenomenal. Janet is a beast; she is so great to watch. Sam was fun, too and sounded great. He really picked it up at the end when he switched to the keyboard (he played guitar for most of the set) which included some playing with his stomach and also falling over knocking everything down and then playing from the ground.

Also this is my first time seeing them with a bassist and throughout the show I was saying to myself, hey, she reminds me of that Joanna lady what played with Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks. I didn't realize it actually was her, though, possibly because I've only previously seen her from far away at large venues.

At any rate, my favorite performance was probably "Ape Self Prevails in Me Still." They were the best. The end.

So I just left Dodge Theater/Comerica to buy a couple more tickets for the Arcade Fire show for my buddy and all I could get were side tickets way at the back of the lower level, you know the extra sections they expand on the sides for large shows. The guy working the ticket booth said it will sell out today. So if you don't have tickets jump on it quick. They are waiving the service fee as well today only so tickets are only $36 each.

What are people interested in for a week from Sunday? Four entirely worthwhile shows is a rare and wonderful thing for Phoenix. I am almost assuredly going to see the Dears in-store. If I go to another show it would be Asobi Seksu or The Dodos, the latter in no small part because of how much I liked the Duce.

Also I posted a review (excerpted below) of that Elephant 6 Holiday Spectacular at the Duce in the thread on that tour. What a bizarre venue. I look forward to going to a show there again.

Folks all over this board agree with you. It's popular to hate on the Mumford.

I don't think they are the best band in the world or anything but they put on a fantastic live show, are good musicians and have solid song writing skills. People who don't like Mumford and Sons tend to hate that entire genre. The Avette Brothers get lumped in with them quite a bit. I saw them twice last year and enjoyed both shows.

They absolutely blew away the crowd at Glasto with an overflowing tent and everyone moving, dancing and waving their flags.

There is no way they won't use the drained wave pool, otherwise what is the point of having this event during the off season at a water park. As recollection serves, Big Surf is fairly small with the wave pool as the main attraction and the largest footprint of space. I only hope Insomniac is paying Big Surf enough to re-plaster any damage, because this will probably be packed!

In any case, I already bought my $20 tickets. This will be a nice warm up for the Coachella weekend.

I agree with the doc on Mumford & Sons, they only have one album too, right? You have to admit they shouldn't be getting that sort of notoriety for one non-spectacular album. Good for them though. I personally think, The Avett Brothers blew them away at the Grammy's.

Yes one album but a lot of people did think it was rather spectacular. I loved that whole bit at the Grammy's with them, Bob Dylan and Avett brothers. Good for all of them as far as i'm concerned. Even Bob for poking his head out for a rare tv performance.

I really would like to go to that Railroad show but with the price tag so high and the beerfest show i'm going to pass. I just have a thing for unique venues.

Someone please explain the phenomena that is Mumford & Sons? I just don't get it.

They sound mostly boring and derivative and 'meh' at best.

I'm mostly going for the beer and for Voodoo Glow Skulls, Mumford & Sons and the Dirtyheads are just bonuses as far as I'm concerned. I'm not really sure what the Dirtyheads sound like, I think I read there is a Sublime connection but I have no idea and I don't care. I'm just glad there is finally a beer fest in the Phoenix area with legitimate bands playing. :thu

Sweet, this is right after my birthday.

"This is why we won’t delay for your birthday."

I am super bummed I will not be making it out to Coachella this year. With the new baby at home it just wasn't in the cards. I was pretty upset that I was going to miss seeing Cut Copy. They would have been my #1 act to see. I have been telling myself if Stateside would just bring Cut Copy to town I wouldn't be so bummed. And then this afternoon, BOOSH, the Cut Copy show gets announced. I know it's a long ways off, but I am pumped up for this show. And I won't have to fight a huge crowd to get a good spot.

Also, I feel like my multiple emails to Charlie Levy and approaching Stateside staff at shows requesting to bring Cut Copy to town have also helped. Lol.

I would love to hear any reviews for South By Stateside last week. Fucked around and missed it.

Does anyone else find the promotion machine behind Soundwave lacking? Between the Scottsdale crowd that Steve Levine Entertainment normally caters to and the candy kids who inevitably show up at all Insomniac events, I'm expecting a shitty crowd. Then there's the bullshit rave pricing crap that keeps pushing the price up as the date gets closer even though they just announced the full lineup a few days ago. Naturally, it's 18 and up.

It'll be a great day when we get decent venues and promoters to throw shows of this quality without putting people through this shit. Nevertheless, I'll be at Soundwave, in semi-hater mode.

I took off before Boys Noize, but Diplo, Spank Rock (with Amanda Blank! Stoked!), and Cut Chemist were great! The main stage, in fact, was in the drained wave pool. Great visual setup for the main stage. It sucked it was raining but I came way prepared so I was fine, but there were a lot of scantily clad females shivering their nips off ready to go on the watersides.

yeah, we only stayed like 3 hours. i saw your text when i got back to my car, as i had decidd to leave my phone in the car because it was raining so hard.

we apparently weren't as prepared as you. as i quickly found out, one of my shoes had a really small hole in the sole, which quickly filled with water. my whole shoe/sock was soaked and freezing within 30 mins of getting there. plus, my jacket and undershirt soaked thru by the end of cut chemist, so i was cold as hell. we got there as dj radar? was ending and cut chemist came on. then we wandered a bit, then came back and watched most of porter robinson, who wasn't bad. but by this point i was shivering my ass off, dave's pants were soaked up to the knee with water and boys noize was still at least 2.5 hours away...we decided to bail rather than get sick right before coachella.

the setting was really cool, but the stage was not. the bass wasn't that great at all. we were on the rail for cut chemist and i could barely feel the bass at all. maybe they had part of it shut down due to the rain or some shit...i don't know. but i wasn't impressed with the sound system at all.

Yeah I have no idea who Porter Robinson was before last night but he had the crowd going wild, a large crowd at that.

You both get a :nono

How could you not be prepared?! It was cold and wet all day.

Believe me I wanted to stay for Boys Noize but I had family stuff to do early this morning. My buddy who stayed said Boys Noize was awesome. Diplo introduced Boys Noize as his cousin, which confused a lot of people.

had boys noize not been at coachella, we would have stayed. but since we'll get another set at a much better stage, we said fuck it. and i probably would have been fine if it hadn't been for that little hole on the sole of my right shoe. i didn't even know it was there...and the left one was fine. oh well...this could have been sooo much better, had it been last weekend or today. it would have been warmer at night, no rain, probably could have done slides today and definitely could have last weekend with 100 degree weather.

i will give myself a :nono as well tho...we weren't glad to leave early, but were just getting way to wet/cold and didn't want to get sick before coachella. that would have been even worse than leaving early.

Sound Blizzard

Had a great time. Was cold and rainy for the first hour or so but it then cleared up and was fine. First was cut Chemist. I thought the first half of his set was total garbage. The second half of the set was completely different and much better. Mixed dead prez "Hip Hop" and "shook ones".

Porter Robinson. Wow. Tore the place up. Never heard of this guy before but he was impressive. I knew a lot of the tracks he was dropping but it was the way he was mixing them. Just teasing the crowd with the drops. He starts bringing in DP's "one more time" and at the normal drop brings in some other track with some nasty dirty bass. then he brings it back and does it again. He's doing shit like this his whole set , very impressive mixing skills. The crowd was in a frenzy for most of his set and I loved it.

After that I was at the Dnb Stage the rest of the night basically. I would have loved to check out some of Boys Noize set but, friends came late at about midnight. Met us over at POD and there was like 10 of us just gettin down to some seriously rad DnB and I just couldn't leave. Its been quite some time since I have been to a good DnB show and I was just having a blast. (Sorry no review on Boys Noize Dylan)

The production value as far as the stages was great by AZ standards. I do agree the sound was a little on the weak side though. All in all a very good show I thought.
