It is at the Clubhouse. Emeralds is opening is the most salient point. Tickets are $15. I will be there.

Dodge Theatre renamed Comerica Theatre
http://www.azcentral.com/business/articles/2010/10/07/20101007biz-comerica1009.html

i wish these commerical pricks would just leave venues alone and start naming them with REAL names instead of after thier product or brand and changing the name every few years.

'cause these damn blue collared tweekers, are runnin this here town!

I wish my life were so trouble-free that I could worry about what a venue decides to name itself.

mountmccabe
10-11-2010, 07:56 AM
If it were the venue itself deciding I'd be with you but this is the clear injustice of imposed naming. The venue had no say, no choice and apparently, according to the perpetrators no right of self-governance.

Didn't anybody see Caribou?

mountmccabe
10-11-2010, 04:46 PM
Caribou were great! Maybe a bit smaller crowd than back in May but the front section was still full. They played an hour, had short break then came back to play "Sun." They had four guys on stage again; Dan switched off between guitar, synth, recorder, vocals and drum kit.

Emeralds opened and were fantastic. Constant noise, crazy old analog equipment and synths. And a guitar, too! They played thirty five minutes and I loved 34 of those minutes.

Was the one minute you didn't love a consecutive sixty seconds or were there patches of less-than-love moments strewn periodically throughout the set?

Land of Talk played a great set at the Rhythm Room this evening. Elizabeth was backed by the opening band, Suuns, who kind of stole the show for me. They had some nice noise, great builds and even better guitar interplay (when they went the two guitar route.) The vocals and some of the musical approach reminded me (a lot on the vocals) of Clinic though Suuns here are not as melodically driven. Their set was for me constantly exciting.

Suuns are from Montreal and their debut album was released today.

Has anyone been or seen a show at 910 Live in Tempe? I think it's just Boston's renovated. I came across it though azcentral's website looking at the Top 7 Valley Halloween parties since they are having a Thriller-themed ball. I was looking at the photos of the venue in the gallery and it looks pretty bad ass. I hope they book some good shows there soon besides Alice and Chains cover bands, because I want to check it out.

I've seen a few shows there when it was Boston's (Static-X & a free Smashing Pumpkins show to name a couple). The place is pretty small, and they had a stage that was half indoor/half outdoor, as well as an outdoor stage. I remember not being too enthralled with the venue itself.

I went to visit my uncle who has leukemia and is undergoing chemotherapy. He lives in new york. he has no children of his own, and since my father (his brother) died this summer, I am his closest living relative. I may go back in a few weeks and miss Joanna Newsom as a result.

I wound up doing nothing about the Sufjan ticket, I was pretty swamped last week. It went to waste.

I still haven't listen to the Black Angels. I am going because I never had a chance to see Black Mountain and I love their last two albums. My roommate Joel likes Black Angels and has been talking about them too. I only heard a clip of a song of theirs and I liked it. I'm going to listen to a bit more of them. Seems like a great double bill for the always shitty club house but I haven't been there in years so hopefully my low expectations make it all the better.

Yes. They have a male and female vocalist. They were up against Roger Waters in 2008 so I missed them. Stormy High is quite the jam. I like their latest album Wilderness Heart as well. The production quality seems to be improving and thematically they haven't strayed but Wilderness Heart seems like a blatant attempt at commercial success as it lacks much of the prog rock type jams that Into the Future had. This album is much tighter.

Still, nobody is doing stoner rock better right now.

The bloody beetroots put on one hell of a show at the marquee. Much more intense/fun to watch/fun to go crazy too than their dj set. I was glad to see everyone was really into it. Everything was so stylized and almost dramatic (with the back lighting and really expressive playing). It set a very nice mood to the whole set and really pulled me in.

I'm excited for gaslamp killer in a few weeks. As well as pretty lights next month.

I'm thinking about going to the Roots show. I got some info on it last week. I don't think it's going to be a regular show though. It's billed as a Red Bull Sound Clash show: The Roots vs. Miniature Tigers.

Some details I found online:

Red Bull Soundclash Arizona will be the ultimate live music conversation. Two bands will collaborate like never before, with the audience standing between the two stages for the best seat in the house. It will make a stop in Scottsdale, Arizona on Saturday, November 20, where legendary hip-hop crew The Roots and indie rock band Miniature Tigers will be on stage.

there is a $30 ticket price too that says GA...but that's probably not for the "orch pit" they show on the map. the info page says "seating is in the round" so all the sections that you can't click on to select seats are GA and the few front & center seats are available as reserved for $45. i wonder if "seating in the round" means this will be a rotating stage show? that'd be pretty cool to see.

Tickets are going to start at $15. Great for those who missed out on the private KUPD show. I'll be going a second time this year for kicks.

After Behemoth had to cancel their tour, Watain is still making the trek across the Atlantic. Too bad it is on the same day as the Roots. Both bands share a lot of fans.

I'm there. I'm glad I didn't go to the Tucson show now. This is right up the road and I bet this venue sounds fantastic because it's so new!

21+ show only $15 and the venue only holds 1400 people. Perfect. No need to buy the $50 seats in a venue that small.

I'm also undecided between Daedelus/Free the Robots and Pretty Lights. I'll probably only make it to one of the two.

there is a $30 ticket price too that says GA...but that's probably not for the "orch pit" they show on the map. the info page says "seating is in the round" so all the sections that you can't click on to select seats are GA and the few front & center seats are available as reserved for $45. i wonder if "seating in the round" means this will be a rotating stage show? that'd be pretty cool to see.

That does mean the stage is spinning. Did you go the last time they played celebrity? I've seen them twice there now. Going to pass on this show. Pretty upset that I found out today that Inspectah Deck (my favorite Wu Tang member) and Mastah Killah were here in Phoenix last night. Would've preferred to see that as I haven't seen Deck do more than a medley of his own material.

I am glad it's at Celebrity though, my favorite underused venue in town. Oh, also, heard you can park at Christie's Cabaret right down the street for free and walk to the venue, might want to give that a try.

A little more info on the Roots show Sat....

http://www.azcentral.com/thingstodo/music/articles/2010/10/26/20101026soundclash-miniature-tigers-roots-american-junkie.html

"The Roots will battle it out against the formerly Phoenix-based Miniature Tigers at the Red Bull Soundclash Nov. 20 at American Junkie in Scottsdale.

The battle of the bands pits Jimmy Fallon's house hip-hop band against neo-psychedelic indie rockers Miniature Tigers.

In block party-style, the two bands, on opposite sides of 15th Street, go back and forth putting out their best rehearsed and improvised tunes to win over the crowd. The audience is in the middle.

The 18-and-older party will be hosted by Akrobatik- Boston-based emcee, and DJs Senbad and DJ-R will keep the beats flowing between sets."

My roommate and I actually didn't buy tickets in advance. We showed up last night thinking we could still get tickets. It was sold out when we got there. There was a long line for will call and wristbands and then a separate long line just to get in. We walked around to the back of the long lines and just by good karma a girl appeared out of the darkness and asked if we wanted to buy the two tickets she had because she had already got a wristband another way. She only charged face, $10.00 each.

I didn't feel like standing in the long lines to get the wristband so I used my shifty Jew skills and walked up to the front and just got in the front of the mob of a line and got my wristband with my roommate following close behind. Then instead of waiting in another long line to just get in the venue I used the same tactics to just mosey up to the front of the second line and we got in within minutes... I don't do lines... As NachoCat said before we did run into each other. He was even nice enough to buy me a couple of Stellas.

The show itself was kinda weird because it was a "battle of the bands". We got to see maybe a third of an actually Roots show, but for $10.00 I guess I can't complain too much. The highlight of the night was when the Roots brought Angelo Moore from Fishbone on stage to cover "Freddie's Dead" by Curtis Mayfield. Here are a few blurry pics from my camera phone.

Also the club/bar that put on the event is called American Junkie. I guess its a club/bar that specializes in showing UFC fights on tv. Really stupid. There were people at the club that were there just to watch the UFC fights on tv and not for the music. I've never been to a UFC bar before and I hope I never have to go to another one again.

The show was a little strange like Micah said. The Roots would play for a min then it would switch over to the minatuar nobody's for a few. I was close to the roots side and it was a lot of fun when they were playing. Couldnt hear shit from the other side. I missed the first 10 min or so so i cant tell you what happend there. It was wierd because they were doing all these different rounds with a different gimmick to each round. One was both bands played a Cover. Hendrix "fire" in this case... Captain Kirk killed this and was the highlight for me. The guy is leathal on the guitar. The tuba player was baddass as well, i really loved having that in there with the band.

Then they played a couple songs but in different genre's The roots played a couple of thier songs in punk. The seed was ok but i really just wanted the original. I didnt stay for the end it was crowded as hell and i had some friends that didnt get in so i went out to meet them. All in all It was worth $12 but with the style of show and the setup/crowd that was present not worth anymore then that. I had a fun time though, now it just has me wanting to see a full on Roots show that much more.

definitely one of the best shows i've seen in a while. and i've seen a LOT of shows. probably the only show even close to as visually stunning would be the LITS NIN tour. but that NIN tour was not as classic as "The Wall", so it immediately drops a spot just for that.

The topless lady sounds better than the drunk dude who fell on top of me during the second set. He is really lucky I caught him, otherwise his head would have smashed on the cement. I'm lucky he didn't break my neck or my glasses.

Great show besides that incident. My peak moment was during Goodbye Blue Sky. Something about that song always gets me.

wow. sounds like there were some really fucked up people there. everyone in my section was pretty good, except some douche that kept shouting stuff all thru the set. they can't hear you on stage douche. and we get it...you know the The Wall and are familiar with it. great. STFU

Have to echo how good Roger Waters was...truly amazing experience. No drunken people or topless ladies around me, though.

Highlights for me were Comfortably Numb (of course), Mother, Run Like Hell...well, pretty much everything.

I'd definitely see them again.

Mr. Dylanja
12-05-2010, 12:12 PM
Thinkin' about it. I like the Venue of Scottsdale, it used to be the Cajun House. I don't think the crowd would be as bad, since it's a venue and not a club. It's pretty big too.

sin213
12-05-2010, 04:11 PM
like dlo said the venue of scottsdale is the old cajun house, so it wont be as douchey as myst or other clubs, as its not really a club per se...but it will be plenty douchey for most of our taste as it is in scottsdale on nye.

westcoastpirate
12-05-2010, 05:20 PM
I was at the Venue of Scottsdale for Ratatat recently and it wasn't that bad, although the line situation to get in was ridiculous. There were basically 2 lines, 1 for will call, another if you were buying tickets at the door. If you had your tickets in hand you could use either line. Of course there were no staff telling you this information. You were basically screwed if you had will-call, so I recommend buying hard copy tickets in advance not will call.

There were tons of kids though pushing their way up to the front inside the venue, so we just chilled in the back.

dj radar at sticky fingers/bar smith on friday was fabulous. i ALWAYS have more fun downstairs at bar smith than upstairs. though why they thought it was appropriate to have people in neon unitards dancing on the roof like jackasses is beyond me. that was not entertaining and just made the dancefloor way too packed because people were just standing and watching the retardedness.

I pass it every day on the way to work, it looks interesting from the outside. It's a brick building in downtown Phoenix maybe 2-3 blocks south of the former Brick House and still open Cooperstown are located.

It's at Central and Lincoln.

I am quite excited for this show and hope to be able to attend. I have managed to see the Olivia Tremor Control once, at a festival, and Ciculatory System once, at a different festival. Both shows were fantastic and fun. I have seen Elf Power at Modified and Clubhouse and they are quite good live, too. I have seen video of old Neutral Milk Hotel shows and they also look crazy (and made me better understand the comparisons the Arcade Fire were getting early on.) This should be great.

Pertinent albums, sorted by weirdness, from least to most:
Elf Power - Creatures
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Circulatory System - Signal Morning
The Olivia Tremor Control - Dusk At Cubist Castle

I might recommend starting with the bolded album; it is the most recent (2009) and it is fantastic and wild and psychedelic and weird. If you dig that then bam, you're in.

I know very little by the other bands listed and wouldn't know where to send you.
