and laura of course conveniently didn't take these pics and doesn't have them. fucking hilarious. ARE WE DONE NOW?!?! CAN AMY FINALLY ONCE AND FOR ALL SHUT THE FUCK UP?!?

I dont have em, cuz i didnt take em. i've seen em, but like most of the pics that were taken that weekend, they've been untagged or deleted. i'm sure you could find em if you tried, but i honestly dont remember who posted em. sorry bout the amy thing. that conversation took place quite awhile ago, but shes a crazy bitch and apparently decided to bring it up again last night. i dont feel like talking about this shit with anyone, but when people ask me about it, they're gonna get my side of the story, side of the story, becbecause im sick and fucking tired of being called a liar just because you dont like what i have to say. i think youre a fairly intelligent girl, you'll figure this shit out on your own.i've respected your desire not to have this conversation with me again, but while you and that sociopath are still telling everyone im a fucking liar, i reserve the right to tell my side of the story to anyone who wants to know. i appreciate the slander of my veracity about as much as you appreciate me brin

The Steep Canyon Rangers have been around since 2001 and have released 6 albums. They have three albums since 2005 that have all charted high on the blue grass charts and have charted higher with each consecutive album, the last two being in the top 5.

They did all of this without Steve Martin. Steve has only joined them on select dates starting last year. I assume they are fans of eachothers work.

I'm all angry about how the circus treats their animals. I decided i'm no longer patronizing the circus, or zoos, or sea world.

06-16-2010, 10:44 AM
Most zoos actually treat the animals very well - though, there is of course the ethical quandry of whether or not zoos should exist in the first place.

I can't decide which side of the fence I'm on re: zoos. I can see the arguments for both sides. Circuses really do bother me though...

Well, my zoo decision came from all the stories I read about the Phoenix Zoo, I came to that decision long before the others. I then started reading about elephants and the elephant sanctuary in Tennessee and learned of all the Circus atrocities. Then you have these killer whales in these tanks at sea world. Finally I decided that these animals need to stay where they live. If we hear that some are becoming extinct, then capture and breed to save the species I suppose but outside of that, I see it all as profit and exploitation. In this day and age of technology we can learn about these animals in other ways. If I really need to see a Zebra up close because I love them with all my heart, I will make the effort and go on an African safari. lol

smelly, sad, loud, children, and tramatization. (seeing elephants stand up and noticing their giant bulbous vaginas at age 9 was the last time i ever went to the circus). Can we throw state fairs and carnivals in with all that crap too?

chairmenmeow47
06-17-2010, 08:40 AM
sin, i'm with you. i've never enjoyed them either. i tend to think about how it's fucking strange and that the animals are probably not happy. i feel the same way about pets. i love animals, but i want them to live the life they want to live, not the display life we want them to live. plus, it's just kinda boring. i'm a tactile, hands-on kinda gal. i only ever enjoyed feeding the giraffes at the wildlife world zoo.

and hacking my dreams, alligator boogiloo, IFA and i will be at edward sharpe! we should meet-up!

i did enjoy the circus more though because of the flying trapeze. i've always wanted to do that. club med has a clown school at their family resorts where you can learn to trapeze. my girlfriends got to do it and i was so jealous!!! i definitely enjoy the acrobatic portion of the circus :)

I.F.A.

chairmenmeow47
06-23-2010, 09:03 AM
$50 was way too much, fuck that. i love miss badu, but i can't afford her.

also, here is what i just sent to the clubhouse on their contact us page (http://clubhousemusicvenue.com/modules/contact/):

I love that your venue is consistently bringing good acts to the valley. I also love that it's a decent size and you can see the band from pretty much anywhere. What I don't love though, is the insane heat. For one thing, you had ceiling fans that weren't being used. My friend had to ask security to turn them on, and only one was turned on. Then, the security guards took the air vent that was pointing to the hot, sweaty, dancing crowd of people and instead pointed it so it literally only hit ONE security guard. We begged him to move it back to the crowd, but instead it was focused right on the area between the tape in the back right corner of the bar (where no one but the security guard could stand). I know it must suck to work in such a hot venue, but at least they are getting paid to be there. We on the other hand are the ones paying to be there, and there are more of us, so why on earth would the air not be pointed in our direction? I had a great time at Edward Sharpe last night, but the heat reminded me why I never go to your venue anymore. Please, please, PLEASE do something about the heat in there. I beg of you. If you can't afford to fix the air fixtures, maybe instead buy giant industrial fans to point out at the crowd (and maybe one for security too). When I hear live music, I want to be able to dance and have a good time without having to worry if I'm going to have a heatstroke or not. I saw Edward Sharpe at the Coachella Music Festival in the middle of the day and it was less hot. Please, I beg of you, on behalf of me and all my fellow concert goers that are constantly complaining about your venue, DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE HEAT! Thank you for listening and for bringing good acts. Maybe when it cools off or the air situation is somewhat tolerable, I will come back.

sin213

I've not been committing to shows lately because my financial situation is so up in the air, but I finally broke down and bought Pixies and LoA/TKK tickets today. I figure if I'm broke by September, the Pixies will help cheer me up. I'm thinking about picking up a few more while I still have a joint checking account. I'll cruise the thread...anybody have any suggestions for August? Maybe something less nostalgia based?

chairmenmeow47
06-23-2010, 09:22 AM
i thought about it, but i wanted to focus on one issue at a time ;) i almost added "i can almost tolerate the bathroom situation if..." LOL. i just went in the men's last night. i can't believe girls would rather wait in line for the women's room than just go in the men's room. they're both foul.

i will need to get my pixies ticket next month, i hope it doesn't sell out. august will be rock the bells for me, but that's not local and is quite nostaglic with all the albums they'll be playing lol. i'll keep an eye out!

M Sparks
06-23-2010, 09:31 AM
The men's room door wouldn't even close a couple of weeks ago. In fact, it would actively pop open.

Wow, there is just NOTHING happening in August. Meanwhile, there are like 6 shows in one week in July I wouldn't mind seeing. Are New Pornographers coming to Phoenix? I don't want to go to Tucson twice in a week.

EDIT...HA! Not Phoenix, but 8/14 at Mandalay Bay Beach... "Lost 80's Live"- A Flock Of Seagulls, When In Rome, Animotion, Dramarama, The Motels. Gene Loves Jezebel, Real Life, The Escape Club. Yikes! I bet most of these are pretty painful. A couple years back, I had tickets to something similar (the first four, plus Bow Wow Wow and Devo headlining.) It was in SUN CITY of all places, but it got canceled.

ha ha ha ha, i love that on "bands reunited", flock of seagulls made SUCH a big deal about reuniting and the lead guy was such a douche about playing "and i ran". now they seem to come together a lot more frequently.

still, i'd go to that show if it was here :x

yeah, from pics it looks completely redone inside. plus, they've put about $1k worth of black lights in and around the venue for "effects".

i hope they still have the inside stage vs outdoor stage areas...and if there is still an inside stage, i hope you can still watch thru the back side of the stage from outside. that was cool.

The Ghost Room at Hotel San Carlos throws a free Sat. night party w/ indie dance remixes and nu-disco (11-2:30 am). For free (including free bag check) and an immediate smoking outside area, you almost want to like it. Plenty of room for dancing, and who knows what the DJ's will throw down, or if they will trainwreck, but like I said, free, right off the lightrail, and I had fun gettin' down last wknd. This isnt a show, just a party, but its brand new, and it needs more fun people...

Zack de la Rocha Ups the Rage Against Arizona Immigration Law

Rage Against the Machine frontman Zack de la Rocha is stepping up his campaign to compel the state of Arizona to repeal its controversial immigration law. In addition to adding Ry Cooder, Nine Inch Nails, and comedian Chris Rock to the growing list of artists who are refusing to perform there as part of The Sound Strike boycott effort, de la Rocha tells Billboard.com that plans are in the works for a series of protest concerts in July.

"In the coming weeks we are going to be organizing a series of concerts that are respectful of the nature of the boycott in its attempts to isolate the Arizona government but not isolate the people, and especially the organizations that are fighting this on the ground," de la Rocha said in a telephone interview. "Many of us have begun to plan concerts that include bands that have signed on the Sound Strike, and make tickets available so that people within Arizona can come and see these concerts as they roll out. These are things that are being set into motion right now - a series of concerts or maybe even one giant concert in late July."
*
De la Rocha says that "there's a strong chance" Rage Against the Machine will play one or more of the concerts.

The law passed by the Arizona state legislature, SB1070, requires local authorities to determine a person's immigration status if he or she is suspected of being undocumented. The law is set to be enacted on July 29.

Maroon 5, Gogol Bordello, My Morning Jacket, Ben Harper and Pitbull are among the dozens of artists who today (June 28) announced their support for the Sound Strike effort and have pledged to boycott Arizona, refusing to perform in the state until the law is repealed. Steve Earle, Billy Bragg, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Anti-Flag, Throwing Muses, State Radio, Aztlan Underground and DJ Spooky also announced support for the effort in a posting on thesoundstrike.net today.

In addition to the dozens of artists announced today, the first in a series of video PSAs were released, featuring de la Rocha, Conor Oberst and Ozomatli. Additional PSAs will be posted to the site every Monday in the weeks leading up to the law's scheduled enactment.

The Sound Strike was launched in late May by de la Rocha to mobilize fellow musicians to participate in the boycott effort, to educate the musicians' fans about the law, and to gather signatures on a petition calling for its repeal. Cypress Hill, Juanes, Conor Oberst, Los Tigres del Norte, Rage Against the Machine, Cafe Tacvba, Kanye West, Calle 13 as well as Oscar winning filmmaker and activist Michael Moore were among the artists who signed on to the campaign at its launch.

"Its been a collaborative effort that started with a letter I sent out, which was passed on to all the guys in Rage Against the Machine, and to various friends I've made while playing in Mexico," de la Rocha said. It spread organically that way. And I've definitely been pooling through everyone I know to continue to push before this law is enacted in just over a month. We're still getting letter in and we have a lot more artists joining on that we'll be announcing in the next few weeks."

While many artists and musicians are supporting the boycott, some in the Arizona music community have questioned the approach, insisting that fans and promoters alike are being unjustly punished. In an open letter to the participating artists, Arizona-based concert promoter Charlie Levy of Stateside Presents urged them to reconsider. "By not performing in Arizona, artists are harming the very people and places that foster free speech and the open exchange of ideas that serve to counter the closed-mindedness recently displayed by the new law," he wrote. "The people who will feel the negative effects of the boycott the deepest are local concert venues, including non-profit art house theatres, independent promoters, motivated fans, and the hundreds of people employed in the local music business. If the boycott continues, it is all but guaranteed that some of these venues will be forced to close their doors."

But de la Rocha disagrees, and promises musicians will return to Arizona in force if their effort is successful.

"Governor Jan Brewer and the Arizona legislature have created an environment in Arizona where performing is no longer a neutral act," he said. "They have created an environment where they can convert the the normal commercial interaction between artists and their fans into the means to apply this racist law. The relationship between musicians and artists and fans can best be served by standing for human rights and when we prevent this law from coming into action and continue to fight it even if it is enacted, when its removed from the books we're going to have an unbelievable concert - it will be the celebration to end all celebrations."

we are so stoked to announce the first ever jenny and johnny tour. we are looking forward to seeing you all, whoever you are, all over the place. some of you may have noticed that although we are traveling the US extensively, we are not playing any shows in arizona. the arizona state legislature recently passed a bill, "SB 1070?, as part of their new immigration policy. this bill legalizes and sanctions racial profiling. they can stop you in the street, arrest and even deport you based on what you look like. we say: fuck that. so many of our friends and fans are of latino/chicano/hispanic origin, and we wanna show our love and respect for them by boycotting the state of arizona until they come to their senses. to all our rad southwestern peeps, we're sorry that the brutes are running the show and we hope they get voted out of office.

love,

Too bad Jenny Lewis is a retard. They can't deport you for how you look.

mountmccabe
06-28-2010, 07:10 PM
Let's look at this.

this bill legalizes and sanctions racial profiling.

"Legalizes" is false. I'd probably call "sanctions" misleading.

The bill says that (what I'll summarize as) racial profiling is not to be done except as allowed by the US and Arizona Constitutions. Sadly the end of that is not just there for show; numerous courts have ruled that racial profiling is constitutional (for both constitutions.) So the US Constitution legalizes racial profiling. The Arizona Constitution legalizes racial profiling.

What SB 1070 (etc) does do is to create situations in which racial profiling almost has to be used and threatens law enforcement agencies with lawsuits if they hold back. Which is fucked up enough as it is.

they can stop you in the street,

Any cop anywhere in the US can talk to anyone any time they want. This has nothing to do with 1070 and 1070 does not change this situation.

arrest and even deport you based on what you look like.

This statement is skipping several important steps. They can neither arrest nor deport anyone based solely on what they look like.

Yes, there are situations in which the legal status of even people who are not even suspected of any other crime (or misdemeanor, or breaking a local statute or ordinance, etc) is to be checked. But damn, this is fucked up enough that you don't have to make up bullshit to make it sound worse.

Though I'm neither particularly industrial nor goth, I used to go to a lot of the industrial and goth events and clubs in Phoenix (I've had a lot of friends who frequented them - I actually kind of miss Sadisco...). I've always kind of wanted to go to one of the Fetish Balls - if only because I like dressing up. Then I think about it a little harder and realize the kind of comments/come-ons I'd likely face and I just don't want to deal with it. I'm definitely too vanilla for that scene. If I ever really feel the need to bust out my vinyl catsuit, I'll just go to Tranzylvania.

P.S. I'm kidding about the vinyl catsuit. I don't really have one.

I'll just go to Tranzylvania.

I've been wanting to go to Tranzylvania and/or Sanctum since I moved here. Jen and I talked about it a couple times, but it never happened. We should have a goth board meetup sometime.

Although, it might have to wait until winter, because the only appropriate clothing I have these days is a floor length leather coat.

I haven't been to Sanctum yet, and I'd like to check it out. When I used to go to Tranz frequently I really didn't even bother trying to look "goth" - I delighted in being the most visible person in the crowd due to the fact that I was actually wearing some fucking color.

We should totally have a goth meetup night!

7/17 NICKELBACK!!!!

What type of person actually listens to Nickelback? Im trying to picture it in my head but i just keep getting visions of Dave Mathews fans... are these the same people? If so can we pull some kind of SB1070 type law on them?

Actually i didnt make the Skate sess.... I got talked into going to see Kaskade at Axis. Never saw him live and from the stuff ive heard, i thought it was a little heavy on the super fem bot vocals and a little to trancy for my taste..........

BOOOOOOOOOM

Kaskade WTF... This guy... this guy right here knows what he's doing... GREAT show.

07-19-2010, 10:38 AM
Kaskade is awesome. I think I saw him at either EDC or Nocturnal a few years ago.

I didn't even know he was going to be here. I would have violated my ban on Axis for that.

chairmenmeow47
07-19-2010, 10:43 AM

What day?

I've seen him twice and actually really enjoyed it both times. The first time I saw him was at The Brickhouse in 2004, playing with Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers of all bands. Weird lineup, but the setup for that show was awesome.

Honestly, there is such a dearth of events that I care to go to at which I could actually dance these days, I'd check it out for that aspect alone. Fuck, I miss Essential Wednesdays.

Since we're not going to make it to RTB, I think I'm going to try to go to this world music festival in Prescott that weekend. It looks pretty cool actually, and maybe I can get in on some drum circle action with my hippie brethren.

there is a club called cream in scottsdale. they do an EDM weekly there. amy and i are going. we know the dj's, so we can also get in free. if you are interested in going, you can get in free too. EDM is music that is electronic and danceable. DJs spin records to project this music into your ears. scottsdale is snobby, but when our friends take over the place, it can't be all that bad ;)
