enjoyed the movie, definitely brought back vibes of their show at coachella. lot of great camera angles putting you in the crowd. loved the strange interludes of fuji rock and the girl's trip.

and yes, should've been a little louder.

Echo everything else that's been said. It's one of the better live concert films. Some really intense moments. LMAO to some of the reactions to the clown and the guy with his eyes rolling in the back of his head.

Give us a review of Zola Jesus? Wondering how she is live.

Zola was good. Started off a bit slow and all of her songs were sounding the same but then she had some rocking numbers in the middle of her set. Think Fever Ray with all the smog but none of the lamps. Or the creep factor.

any good shows next week? not on wednesday or sunday?

The only shows I'm planning on attending this month are Polica on Wed the 22nd (so a no for you) and the Grimes/Born Gold show on Monday the 27th. Born Gold is always a crazy dance party so I'm really looking forward to that. You people should go!!!

Also announced today is Hunx and his Punx with Justin from No Bunny at Yucca on 4/20 for anyone into trashy rock n roll.

Next Saturday (11th) you can catch the Gin Blossoms at the Capitol for Arizona Best Fest featuring a salute to AZ with Jan Brewer! George Benson, who is a great jazz guitarist, is playing the fest Sunday night. I think the big show at the Crescent this week is Dr. Dog, which I heard is almost sold out.

We're in for Spiritualized. And Tommy, did you see that Portugal. The Man are playing the Crescent on 4/6? Might that lure you out to the desert again or is it too close to Coachella?

Zola Jesus was quite good. Conatus has grown on me over the past few weeks, which is good because the bulk of her set was lifted from it. Per setlist.fm:

1. Swords
2. Avalanche
3. Hikikomori
4. Seekir
5. Lick the Palm of the Burning Handshake
6. In Your Nature
7. Night
8. Sea Talk
9. (unknown)
10. Ixode (identified as "Ioxide" on setlist.fm, but I'm pretty sure that's wrong)
11. Shivers
12. Vessel
ENCORE
13. Run Me Out
14. (unknown)

I feel like there was a song between "In Your Nature" and "Night," but am not certain enough to debate the person who posted the setlist. We left right after "Night," which was probably the song I was most anticipating. The only song she played afterward that I regret having missed was "Ixode," but I'll get over it, especially with how tired we were. But yeah, her voice was really good live, something I've come to appreciate more ever since seeing Gang Gang Dance, with their singer's voice really not living up to what it sounded like on the album.

She must've said that after I left 'cause I don't remember hearing anything of the sort. If that was the sole reason why she sounded bad (and she in fact tends to sound closer to how she does on the album), then I'm all the more disappointed that they're not on the Coachella line-up.

i just bought tickets for the mowtown classics show at the orpheum on 3/17. the other performances are at the phoenix symphony, but it's been ages since i've been to the orpheum. i'm QUITE excited. i bought cheap seats, but honestly there's not a bad seat in the house there in my opinion. i'm probably going to save my extra ticket in case i have a date, or just invite my dad/a friend closer to the date if not.

Saw Sin post on Facebook about Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds playing the Orpheum on April 18. I was trying to avoid it because he'll win pretty much any conflict at Coachella but the thought of seeing a headlining set in an intimate venue (Ivy's most recent post sold me on the Orpheum) was so enticing that I obsessed about it for a few days and finally told Jennifer that I want a ticket for my birthday. Ended up buying one for myself on Saturday. Can't wait to sing along to "Don't Look Back in Anger."

I like the Noel Gallagher album and I like Oasis. I'll be seeing them at Coachella hopefully both weekends. If I was in town midweek I would strongly consider that show too because the Orpheum easily the best theater in the valley. I've seen Jeff Tweedy play there and Sharon Jones & Dap Kings. I wish they had more shows there.

Thanks for the Polyphonic Spree info Gribbz. I will have to pick up a ticket to that. I haven't even listened to them in a couple of years. I used to be a fan of Tripping Daisy (lead singer's previous band) back in the 90's. I saw them a couple of times live back then.

Polica last night at the Rhythm Room was great. I didn't pick up on it while listening to the album, but they have a very 90s trip hop vibe. Their bass player is quite good. He played a lot of cool stuff in between the chord structure of the songs. Reminded me of Jaco without all the 16th note rhythms. Singer was on-point. They had a good crowd too. Not packed, but full. They played the entire album with a new song. Then the crowd got them back for an encore that was entirely new songs since they didn't have anything else. There was a little too much treble in the FOH mix and the speakers were distorting at moments. Their clean sound would have been much better at the Crescent. I would definitely check them out again.

Couple other shows I saw listed at the RR:
3/11/12 - Teen Velvet/Sayd the Whale/AU
3/13/12 - Peter Case & Paul Collins

Case's past solo stuff was mostly blues, but I've heard this tour is going to be songs from The Nerve, The Beat, and The Plimsouls. And I'll be at the Grimes/Born Gold show on Monday night if anyone else is going down there.

Grimes/BG was awful.

BG is now only 2 original members with a new guy. Their show is all sampled/abletron now and they cut back a lot of the interaction stuff although some of it is still there. It's more gimmicky now with Cecil controlling the show from an Ipad with a motion censor and a sampler inserted into his jacket. What made it bad was all their new material is bass heavy 808 crap probably made for the Skrilly kids. Only two songs from their album in the entire set. One of my favorite live acts is now done.

Grimes sounded awful although that was the RR FOH guy and not her fault. There was a constant stream of loud high-end static from the PA the entire show. She had problems with her monitors and stop the show a few times. The JBLs kept distorting as usual. She played all new material except Vanessa. Oh, she also blew up since her last visit in Oct. I didn't realize the new album was getting that much attention. The place was packed with girls copying her style and bros. Lots of bros who probably don't realize they are bros. There was a fucking mosh pit at Grimes. It's little 18-19 year old Claire playing 80s dance music and the bros felt the need to mosh the entire show. Albeit it wasn't anything crazy like a Slayer pit (more like a hipster/bro pit that included a dude in a scarf and mittens), but it annoyed almost everyone. At one point there was a fight among the bros. A few got kicked out. At the end of the show there were at least four cop cars outside and a firetruck to deal with all the fucktards. Did I mention this was at Grimes. WTF is wrong with people? I though all the dbags kicked it in Scottsdale.

That was a good crowd for a Monday night. I've been to a few sold out shows there. Since the Crescent opened up I haven't been to a show at the RR that's been terribly crowded. The crowd for Grimes/Austra in Oct was just a fraction of size compared to last night. You hitting her up again at SX?

In case anyone was wondering, the crescent ballroom is not a 420 friendly venue. I got kicked out of the saul williams show last night for smoking a joint. I would have got away with it if I had just hit it a couple times and then put it out. But I was being a nice guy and let like 5 people hit it. This was the first time I've ever been kicked out of a venue and it has inspired me. From now on I am going to make it my goal to get thrown out of the crescent everytime I see a show there. Next show I plan on seeing is portugal. the man on april 6th. Who wants to get kicked out with me?

I'm well aware of state laws. I just didn't realize that it was a big enough deal to actually have me escorted out of the building like that. I've smoked at venues all around town and never had this happen to me before(I actually smoked at M83 and had no problem). I've had security tap me on the shoulder and give me a warning before but I've never had anything like this happen.

I know the cheesy chipped feline is going to be there.

I'm not too familiar with most of the names, but isn't it primarily trance? I wouldn't mind seeing Prydzzz set up.

Some trance, progressive house and dubstep. Sad thing is they've neutered the lineup for Phoenix. Sadder thing is the full lineup isn't much better.

And what SomewhatDamaged said.

Minal reminds me of a fraggle.

Any meetup for Waters on Tuesday or Spiritualized on Sat? Also, I'm going to Jeff the Brotherhood at the RR on Thursday and maybe I Break for Horses on that Monday at Crescent. I have a big group going to Waters, but I'll probably be solo for Spiritualized and the other shows if anyone wants to meet up. BTW, Jeff TBH is awesome. It's like a blend of 70s classic rock with 90s Nirvana-ish rock so some big open jam moments followed by three chord jams. Rock the fuck out music.

Jen & I will be at Spiritualized as well. I'm figuring they'll go on around 9:30 since there's just the one opener and the Crescent website says the show starts at 8:30. On the fence about getting there close to 9:30 and having dinner/drinks at the Crescent beforehand.

Let's go to Carly's for food/drinks beforehand. It's cheaper than the Crescent.

hmmm can't decide if I want to just sit on the back of the bleachers for this show and space out or what. It would be a shame to not drink for a Sat show where I can take the light rail home.

In the midst of all this Spiritualized talk, I took a look at the Stateside Presents page today & feel like sharing some of the notable shows coming up that I'm interested in attending (if only for recordkeeping purposes):

6/14 - YACHT (Crescent Ballroom; $12 - $14)
7/13 - Shearwater (Crescent Ballroom; $11 - $12)
8/15 - Sharon Van Etten/Tennis (Crescent Ballroom; $15 - $17)
9/4 - Twin Shadow (Crescent Ballroom; $14 - $15)
10/15 - Bombay Bicycle Club (Crescent Ballroom; $15 - $17)

Micah: how much were Black Keys tickets after fees? With a starting cost of $40.25, I'm probably going to avoid it since those'll be nosebleeds by the time I'm able to afford them.

I was just checking these two out due to Outside Lands. I would definitely be up for this show.

I got them through the Black Keys website this morning, they were $55.00 + $5.96, so $60.96 each for GA floor.

Yep. It wasn't the best I've seen them, but they were solid. Not much playing to the crowd. The guitar solos were quick and less flashy than other times I've seen them. It seemed like they wanted to get in and out. The Rhythm Room has that effect on some bands. They played a mix of old and new songs. I prefer the old songs a lot more than the new: Heavy Days, U Got the Look, Bone Jam, Ripper. But at least they played them. The new songs have less dynamics and seem to be targeting a slightly different audience. Crowd was small but energetic. Friends that went and had never seen them before enjoyed it a little more than I did. People got down to most of the set so you should have a good time.

Spiritualized were fantastic live. I wish I had the words to describe it. Alchemy was there too, maybe ask him. :) It was psychedelic, gospel perfection, and the guitar jams were amazing to behold. I was completely enthrallled. I also loved the female back-up singers and the harmonica. They played Come Together right before they left the stage for the first encore, and I was left begging for more with my jaw dropped on the floor. YOU MISSED OUT, TOMMY.

Nice review Amyzzz! Such an amazing experience. Born Never Asked/Electric Mainline was so good live. I could of listened to them play that all night-captivating. Slight swaying of the crowd during Soul on Fire. And there were actually some complete songs where nobody took out their cell phone to film!

Tommy, that's nice that you go to your niece's birthday parties. I'm a bit annoyed that my sister-in-law didn't go to my daughter's birthday party earlier in the day Saturday. :D

Timestretch, do you know the title of the instrumental song in which the tempo started going faster and faster, and the background movie looked like it was in space? Sorry if that is not enough detail. I LOVED THAT SONG.
