I can't imagine they would go on that early. If the showtime says 9, I would move that back an hour. It takes a long time to move the crowd in at the Marquee due to their ridiculous security searches.

(On the other hand, I went to a show there once that was done by 10:15 and they were pushing us out the door by 10:20.)

So Macayo's is the "official" meet up? I love you guys, but I'm only coming down there for Becca and Andy.

There was one point I felt the music was way too cheesy, but then they started playing all the good songs, and everyone was jumping around and throwing glow sticks, and it was amazing. i agree with amy. it was fun that everyone was dancing, even if some of the songs were too cheesy for me. i had a lot of fun jumping around. also the guitar noise thing (either the opener or cut copy, can't remember) drove me insane. the harp player guy in the opening act seemed super talented, i was just way too tired already and the music was kinda slow for what i was looking for at that moment in time. but i'd like to see them again in a sit down venue or something. fun show, but man was i beat from the week. could not hang. slept until 1.

Jen & I have our tickets for GGD. Not sure about FF. Will probably be a day-of decision.

LOUIS CK!!! SATURDAY OCTOBER 28TH

That's cool because we were just talking the other day about having an opportunity to see him, but $40+ for the cheapest seats is awfully pricy. This fall is just too damn packed with compelling stuff to see.

So the house party last night was at the home of one of the Stateside promoters. All the innards of the Crescent Ballroom were set up in the backyard. It's going to be about 500 capacity (so I need to purchase that M83 ticket). It's brick and the room is more wide than deep. The guy running FOH says its a fairly dead room and should be easy to dial in good sound. Suppose to get four stacks. All of which is making me super excited for the upcoming shows. There's also a small lounge and they are planning to hire a chef to serve some quality food at the venue. They had an open call job fair on Sat for staff positions---but Johnny come lately.

Chris Bianco of Pizzeria Bianco and another local chef, Doug Robson of Gallo Blanco, are overseeing the menu at the Crescent Ballroom, a midsize music venue set to open in October off Van Buren Street in downtown Phoenix.

Charlie Levy of Stateside Presents is opening the 7,000-square-foot venue at 308 N. Second Ave. on the site of a former garage built in 1917.

The menu at Cocina 10, as the restaurant component of the Crescent will be known, consists of what Bianco calls "Mexican-accented road food."

Cocina is Spanish for kitchen; 10 is a reference to the I-10.

So what brought Bianco to the table?

"It's a funny thing," he says. "Charlie just called. I'm a big music lover, a big supporter. In my heart, it was always, 'Well, what can I do to help?' My only problem is my plate is somewhat full, to say the least. But we sat back and said, 'How can I affect this in a positive and realistic way and also give it something that I think would help it be successful. More than just jamming something in there with my name on it that's like a watered-down version of whatever, I thought that I could help head up the food side in support of Charlie's beautiful intention."

Hooking up with Robson was a natural, he says.

"Charlie loves Doug's food," he says. "And I love Doug and his integrity and intention. And I thought that together, we could come up with something that would really help support it. So I started talking about the I-10 and I had this kind of 'road food' intention. I was calling it 'I-10 Foods.' It was basically 10 foods and all of them had a kind of Mexican or border accent to them. That's why Doug's role in this is more than heavy. We came up with 10 items that you can hold onto, like a killer burro, things that wouldn't challenge you or make you stop and think about it but maybe at 11 o'clock at night, after seeing Lucinda Williams, you say, 'That was a killer burro I had. It was filled with good things.' "

The first show at the Crescent Ballroom is Blind Pilot on Monday night, Oct. 3, preceded by a free show in the lounge by Raul Yanez. In its first month, the Crescent has shows on the books with Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Gang Gang Dance, Chico Mann of Antibalas, the Album Leaf, Black Carl, Liam Finn, Blitzen Trapper with Dawes, CSS, Friendly Fires, Washed Out, Maria Taylor, St. Vincent, Sergio Mendoza Y La Orkestra, Melissa Ferrick, Mason Jennings, Deer Tick and Das Racist, among others.

I'm talking to some of the guys that were in the Phoenix soul scene in the '60s, like the drummer for Dyke & the Blazers, people who played with Eddie & Ernie, and trying to do some sort of Phoenix soul revue for later in the year. I'm really gonna try to branch out and bring in all types of artists that people from every walk of life would want to see. If you're a fan of music, I want to have something that month that you're gonna be excited about."

Gang Gang Dance were good. Not a fan of the singer live, though, unfortunately, which really took a bit of the wind out of the sails for my enjoyment of "Adult Goth" and "Mindkillah." My favorite song was the jam they did with her off-stage.

The Crescent is awesome. New favorite venue, whereas I didn't necessarily bother with saying that I had one previously. Looks like we're going to be spending a lot of time there, too. CSS/MEN next Tuesday, maybe Friendly Fires on Friday, perhaps St. Vincent on the 20th, Phantogram on 11/5, M83 two nights later, and probably Rachael Yamagata on 11/30. I wish I lived right next door to there.

When we went in last night, they handed us 2 free tickets to tonight's show, Chico Mann. He's in Antibalas and has a sick setup (according to the employee who chatted us up on the patio). We're not going to make it but I don't want the tickets to go to waste, so send me a PM if you'd like to meet up and get them off of me. Tomas: I had 2 Blue Moons and they were $9.change. Also, they weren't on draft, so those definitely didn't fit into the parameters that the bartender gave Jen. We campaigned hard with the employee who was talking to us to add Sonoran Mountain Brewery's White Chocolate Ale, which is only the best beer in the history of the universe. Fingers are crossed that he comes through in persuading.

We've got tickets to CSS & MEN there on Tuesday. Think I may try to go on an empty stomach so I can enjoy one of their meals this time. Also, they've got tables set up just behind the rail that lines what would probably be accurately described as their "pit." We're going to plant ourselves there early as often as possible.

DON'T TELL ME HOW BROKE I AM!

i'm sure i could afford tickets in a few months.

Whoa. Tickets are $40. That seems a bit pricey, but I'd like to see Iron & Wine live for once.

Uh, Primus is playing Mesa Amphitheater on October 20th. Were any of you aware of this?

First time I ever saw them was by "accident" at Mesa Amp. Years ago, went to go see Living Colour, and Kings X was supposed to be the opener. They canceled last minute, and Primus got the gig. Didn't know what to make of them at the time, as they were fairly unknown at that point. I just remember being in awe of Les.

I bought tickets for St. Vincent, but I am dreading working Friday morning. I figure this is what an ASU education is good for: learning how to go out drinking and still managing to get up the next day and do some work half-assed.

I'm curious about what shows some of you have seen at After the Gold Rush. Not Electric Ballroom, but ATGR. I saw Mr. Bungle in 91 and that was it. Right before the change. I'm guessing some of you saw some great shows there.

I saw Michael Penn there.

This.

Next Thursday I wake up and go to work, then go to school, then go to St. Vincent, then go to bed, wake up and go to the airport and fly to S.F. to see Portishead play The Greek in Berkeley. I can't wait!

Maybe I would appreciate St. Vincent more if I saw her live. I enjoy her albums, but I forget about them rather quickly.

Hey fellow Coachella friends,

Wanted to give a notice of this show coming up that a few friends and I are throwing.. A "Cult Classic" Halloween party!

Nacho Lovers from Fool's Gold will be headlining. They play an vinyl, Disco & House, and we're bringing in some top notch sound for the event.

Hope you can make it out!

Hmm, Brick. While I had a good time when I was there for Classixx (at least what I can remember), that venue could be better. We'll see.
