Don't you have a pathetic boyfriend to baby or something better to do than give me shit for starting a thread?

I'm a 50 dollar plane ticket away and I have friends and family there. Is that enough for you?

anyhow, Is anyone going to the music swapmeet at Rialto? I bet there will be some awesome stuff there...

look lady, i dont know why you even care enough to "hate" something on a message board. I really don't give a fuck about you or care to get personal.

I started the thread to keep myself in tune with whats going on in Tucson. You really have some issues is this bothers you.

Little Dragon was fucking incredible!!! I went in quite naively, having only heard their work on the new Gorillaz. Best show I've seen in a while...

It was an early show, not sure why. It baffles the mind to think a band appearing on one of the top selling albums in the WORLD, only draws 40-50 people. Ahhh, such is Tucson. The show was over by 10p.

Princeton opened up. Pretty talented band, not my style. Twin(literally) guitar power-pop. They covered Yo La Tengo and at times sounded very much like Royksopp and Vampire Weekend. Meh.

Then comes Little Dragon. Wow. Live drums mixed with programmed beats, synths, bass guitar and heavenly vocals. Their stage presence is all about Yukimi, the lead singer. She owned the stage. The band was really tight, although they did extend songs and jam out several times. Their vibe reminds me of Portishead and the jammy extended parts sounded a bit like a stripped down !!!. Yukimi put me in a trance.

Barring major conflicts on fest Friday, I will be watching this band again. I plucked up the courage to say hi to Yukimi after the show. I also told her I was looking forward to seeing her at Coachella. She was very sweet and told me it is going to be fun. Did I mention she is super sexycute?!!

Bummed I missed Slow Club...I's got drama at home....

I don't mean to be rude (honestly), but do you have multiple personalities? At first I sort of imagined you as a Jaba the Hut with a computer but then I met you, now I'm thinking you're either your husband's prisoner or just someone with multiple personalities who lives in a very badly lit home...

sin213
03-31-2010, 08:56 AM
it was a great show. testament was amazing. and megadeth was really good. dave's vocals were hard to hear at times...not sure if they were lowering the vocals or if he just wasn't singing into the mic well. sometimes you could hear him good, others not. they haven't really lost any speed to their songs, but he has definitely lost vocal range.

regardless, Rust In Peace in its entirety was freakin cool! that album just has one hit after another on it...and one of my most fav songs "Tornado of Souls".

and i love the rialto. it has a great speaker system and layout. there isn't a bad sightline in the place.

I've held off on my decision long enough. I'm most likely going to this tomorrow. I'm trying ot figure out if I can bring my little dog since it's outdoors. If any of you Tucsonians know please let me know.

Calexico is playing the KXCI benefit in Tucson tomorrow. They tend to play a good 2+ hours for these benefits and since Sergio Mendoza and Salvador Duran will be along it's going to be a fucking great show.

Festival en el Barrio Viejo
Saturday's benefit is not the first time Tucson-based Calexico has stepped up to raise funds for KXCI. A yearly benefit concert for the station has become a tradition in Tucson, usually taking place near New Year's Eve at concert venues like the Temple of Music and Art or the Rialto. But Calexico frontman Joey Burns has long dreamed of creating an event like Saturday's.

Billed as a "Calexico and friends" event, the afternoon is meant to feel more like a neighborhood festival or block party. Guests include frequent Calexico collaborators Naim Amor, Tom Walbank, Salvador Duran and Sergio Mendoza y la Orkesta, about whom Peterson is especially excited. "I have heard so much great stuff about them. I understand he is just high-energy, up-on-your-feet dancing fun, so that's the one I wouldn't want to miss."

Peterson also eagerly anticipates the participation of high school mariachi musicians in the festival. Perhaps these kids are exactly the demographic KXCI is looking for.

Band schedule
Main Stage
1:15p - Fourkiller Flats
2:10p - Tom Walbank
3:05p - Crawdaddy-O
4:00p - Sergio Mendoza Y La Orkesta feat. Salvador Duran
5:00p - Calexico & Friends
Side Stage
1:50p - Courtney Robbins
2:45p - Silver Thread Trio
3:40p - Naim Amor
4:35p - Mariachi Aztlan de Pueblo High School

Tough schedule. Some of Tucson's finest acts though. I'm friends with a number of the performers. It's hard for me to make any strong recommendations, as all the artists are solid. I'm personally biased towards Crawdaddy-O and the Silver Thread Trio, but they are playing at nearly the same time. Faxy: I'm in PHX all weekend, so would appreciate a review.

I fail by the way. Decided against it last minute as gas and ticket would put the cost over $50 and that doesn't include any spending cash in Tucson. Besides it's less than 10 days to the California adventure. I am a bit disappointed but i'm sure they will play the Day of the Dead festival again in the fall and i'll be there for sure.

Why Bands Play Tucson Instead of Phoenix

It's possibly the oldest, loudest gripe in Phoenix's music scene: Why Tucson?

By that they mean, "Why is this cool band that I really love playing that bumblefuck shithole down South when they could play our sprawling metropolis of interconnected stripmalls?"

Electric Mustache's photographer/hatchetman Shawn Anderson weighed in after Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti booked not one, but two, shows in Ye Olde Pueblo this fall while spurning Our Nation's Fifth Largest City.

"So either Phoenix has become the sole embodiment of SB1070 and our smaller cities get a pass for being 'progressive college towns' or something else more (or even less) sinister is going on. If only someone that had any idea of what is going on would leave a comment letting us know," he writes.

Consider this the comment.

Sorry, Shawn but it's nothing sinister. It also has nothing to do with SB 1070. This has been happening for years and years and after talking to most people involved I've identified three factors behind The Tucson Problem.

1. Superior Venues. Even if Phoenix had average-quality venues for a city its size it'd be outgunned by Tucson, which has several ridiculously great places to see live music. Anyone whose been blessed with the chance to see a show at Rialto or Club Congress (which are across the street from each other, making Congress the perfect place for the sort of after-show drinking/hanging sessions that forge a close-knit scene) can vouch for their greatness. Rialto is a fantastic theater and Congress is a really, really great club with a historic hotel attached to it. Plush is stellar, too. Phoenix has nothing on that level. Few cities do, actually. Tucson is a special place in that regard. Whatever the numerical population difference, these venues draw well enough to not make it worth it to come up here.

2. College Town Culture. Tempe is not a college town. Yes, it's home to Arizona's largest (and third-most prestigious) public university but there's very little about it that reminds me of, say, an Athens, Charlottesville or Ann Arbor. But, hey, it reflects the school pretty well. In contrast, U of A is sometimes considered a Public Ivy. There are tons of indie-rock types -- smart, cool and geeky -- down there, whereas Mill Avenue can remind me of the Jersey Shore on a bad night. Want a better music scene in Tempe? Force "State" to adopt stricter acceptance standards.

3. Small-Potatoes Media. Why does Phoenix not have a high-power indie rock radio station? Because there are much more lucrative uses for that bandwidth! Sorry, but until Obama socializes everything (fingers crossed) the free market is going to dictate that any extra bandwidth go to the people who can afford to pay big bucks for it. And those people -- who buy the space and have the money to buy all the towers necessary to cover the vast Valley -- are going to broadcast something other than indie rock. Tucson is a smaller city isolated in the middle of the desert that nevertheless has a huge intelligentsia, so, yes, you can hear Pitchfork bands on the radio there. Believe it or not, promoters and managers still really care about being able to get some pre-show airplay, which means that's a better market. I'm not even going to get into the differences in print, but it often seems to me that Tucson journalists are held to a small-town standard by readers and advertisers, whereas we are not. They're easier to get to and easier to impress, which helps promotion quite a bit.

4. General Travelability. OK, let's say you had a roadtripping friend from Vermont who wanted to spend one night in the Sonoran desert, experiencing the culture before driving to Vegas or LA. Would you send to Phoenix or Tucson? One bad traffic jam on the I-10, and their night is over. Instead, go to Tucson. Eat a Sonoran hotdog. Hang out at Congress. Maybe stop by Poca Cosa. Remember: Bands are, for all intents and purposes, dudes on roadtrips and a city as sprawled out as this one takes a lot longer to get around. Instead, they can park at Congress and walk everywhere they need to go. Not a bad deal.

5. Ability to avoid Shawn Anderson. Seriously, this guy is a tough critic. I wouldn't want to have an off night in front of him.

Actually 3 and 4 are real, too.

It has been since KUKQ on the AM dial that Phoenix had any worthwhile alternative/indie radio station. KFMA is far better than any Phoenix radio station and has been for years. I'd call KLPX better than any Phoenix radio station, too.

And though the explanation given in 4 is kinda silly Tucson does get hit sometimes based on ease of travel. Unless you're playing or staying a night in Las Cruces or something the drive West on the 10 from Texas is brutal, and you get to Tucson first. And if you're moving on to San Diego the easiest route does not involve Phoenix. So even if a Tucson show might draw a touch fewer people than a Phoenix show it is likely worth it to do a show in Tucson. Works much the same for a band going East from San Diego.

A band that is playing Albuquerque or otherwise coming from the North would do better to stop in Phoenix, but, again, how many shows stop in New Mexico at all?

mountmccabe
07-17-2010, 10:20 AM
Also, yeah, our real solution to this is to better support shows in Phoenix. We want it to make sense for bands to play BOTH cities. It's easy to play both with the short drive in between. Great expected turnouts would trump the slight detour to play the other city.

I have a feeling you are going to see more of this at KFMA events. There are so many festivals all over the place now that I wouldnt be surprised to see them start evolving events like this and KFMA day into events involving more genres of music.

I am not implying that there will be a Coachella-sized event in AZ anywhere, but I think that you will see more electronic music and hip hop at these events as the years go by. If KFMA day or Fall Ball touched more genres I would probably go, but I have avoided those events for years now.

KFMA day draws a decent crowd already, so if it expanded the music a little I bet it could be a pretty big state-wide event.

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - Rialto 10/7

This show will sell out, probably pretty fast. Edward Sharpe is EVERYWHERE. Commercials, movie trailers and VHfucking1 are just a few of the places I've seen/heard them lately. Earlier this year they were playing for a handful of people at Club Congress....

Also, MTV is hyping the shit out of Florence and the Machine. You know, because that fit so well with repeated showings of The Jersey Shore.

Smashing Pumpkins - Rialto, 9/1/10

I think I want to see these guys. I just don't know if I will want to put forth the effort. As it stands 8/28 Rodrigo & Gabriella in Chicago 8/29 The Chemical Brothers, 8/31 night school (oh I wish that was the name of a band) and then a drive to Tucson for the Pumpkins on 9/1?

:nono I dunno.

I regret missing the Pumpkins at Gibson's circa 1991. The show was sold out or was 21 and over only or somesuch bullshit, and I couldn't go.

Don't trust Jason. He's biased and probably wasn't a big fan back in the day either heh.

The new drummer is pretty great. The new girl on bass is cute. Billy wrote all the music anyway and chances are good it will be a decent show. I'm really leaning towards going. I gave up on the Pumpkins 10 years ago but i'm ready to come back and give them another try.

Cherub Rock sounds great and this is from their webcast concert last week in NY.

pi-svw8m1rY

I've only seen the Pumpkins in giant venues back in the day so i'm thinking the Rialto coule be awesome. Hearing any Gish, Siamese, MAIFS and Adore songs will definitely be worth it IMO. I just have to decide soon. I have a feeling a venue as small as the Rialto may sell out. The last time they were in town they played the Dodge I think. Last show I saw was the Adore tour at Summerfest in Milwaukee around 1998 or so.

I was a HUGE fan back in the day...which is why i warn to not go. unless you weren't a big fan back then. at which point, you might like the new version of SP. i thought the webcast was horrible...and laughable at some points.

I should probably listen to you Jason and not go to the show to save the cash but it's looking more and more like i'm talking myself into this show. It looks like they are letting fans in for the sound check. Billy has also been posting he is full of love lately and appreciates the support as the fans have been amazing on this tour.

Maybe he's humbled by some of the smaller venues he is playing. It's hard to tell at this point if it's because of what they can draw or if they are just getting used to playing together at some small shows because of new members. This is pretty cool though.

A NOTE FROM BILLY
Here is some info regarding the 'soundcheck sets' at the various shows...Because of the different venues, unexpected delays with loading in gear, and hassles that can occur with anything from travel to miscommunication, we are not able to set a consistent time with regards to when some fans would be let in to see us play...I also want to ensure that Kill Hannah and Bad City get some kind of soundcheck, so all these factors will impact the duration and the start time...we expect to play at least 5-6 songs each day, and if things go well possibly a little more...No less than the first 20 people in line would be let in, and we will have some system where you wouldn't lose your place in line if you have to go back out of the building...We hope this will be a fun experience for everyone, I know we look forward to trying some of the new material...No audio or video taping will be allowed at these soundcheck sets, so please respect and honor our wishes on that...If things go well, we might let in a few people more.

Rock on, love BC

The right (or wrong) side of oblivion. I was in the sectioned area of GA, pretty far back on the right. That was probably my downfall, it just kept getting more and more crowded, song by song. People would go get beer, comeback and crowd our little area. IT WAS FREAKIN' ME OUT, MAN.

BACK IN THE STUDIO
Ghostland Observatory is back in the studio as of January to work on finishing up composition on material for a new full-length. Recording will begin in February with a likely summer-time release.
Thomas and Aaron report having a ton of fun with the new songs and we?re really excited about the demos we?ve been hearing and think fans are in for a surprise treat.

That was a fun night. If GO make a stop in SD and it's a reasonable price then I'll probably go considering there will be new material. I think I saw them something like 5 times with the same show - minus the Prince covers at the soco $5 event which was probably the best $5 show EVER.
