Is anyone interested in the Of Montreal Halloween show? I really want to see OM in a club setting, just don't know if I can hack driving to Tucson and back on a Sunday. And, well, also on a drunks-on-the-road type holiday.

And Lilia, I was also at GLO but didn't make it to Matt's place because, well, the usual reason.

Yep, that's what i'm waiting on. I already have my Joanna Newsom ticket. I keep getting updates from The Rialto and looking but still no Calexico.

Calexico just played the anti SB1070 show this past weekend at the Marquee in Tempe and it was apparently a very short set. They started at 11:15PM and played to 12:30am. I've never heard of such a short set from these guys outside of a festival and they were the headliners. I wonder if something went wrong.

Gribbz
09-01-2010, 02:29 PM
Have a little faith in the Gribbz. My buddy told me about the Joanna Newsom show about a month before they announced it. Rialto is weird in that regard.

Do you guys know if Neon Indian will be at club congress, I wwnt in to buy tickets and all I saw was Prefuse 73 on the hotel congress website. I've already e-mailed the hotel but I haven't got a reply back...

faxman75
09-24-2010, 05:26 PM
What did you go into to buy tickets on the website? That doesn't make much sense. You were there but didn't ask anyone? Have you been to the bands website? Their tour page doesn't indicate any show anywhere in Arizona.

higgybaby23

The Neon Indian listing was removed from the CC website weeks ago. I don't think their playing.

Another one busted by Sheriff Joe. Poor DMX.

I booked a room at Hotel Congress for Saturday November 6th. Joanna Newsom then Calexico Celebrating The All Souls Procession & Dia De Los Muertos!

If there was just one Calexico show to recommend a year this would be the show.

The sound is not so great but this is a great view of the inside decorations for the show and Calexico from last year.

We are beginning to plan our Spring Version of N9NE Fest and I need your help to make it even wilder and crazier. Just take 2 minutes and fill out this quick survey:

http://tucsonmusic.wufoo.com/forms/spring-semester-event/

higgybaby23
09-28-2010, 11:10 AM
I took the survey, but here are some more thoughts, FWIW.

N9NE Fest was ok. I was the oldest person there by about ten years, with most of the people being UofA students(no surprise there). I did have a good time, but there could be many improvements.

I liked the location and would return to other events there. I expected to be able to buy alcohol, but there wasn't any. The foam pit was a joke as were the water slides. Next time take that money and get better talent. The opening acts were average at best. Besides Girl Talk, the kids got the most excited when "Sandstorm" was played during one of the set breaks.

If the fest is made into more of an EDM affair, I would appreciate it. Please don't book a bunch of one-hit-wonder pop acts and/or mainstream hip hop, although I know that would probably be successful from a monetary perspective. KFMA already has the mainstream crapfest covered, set this festival apart.

Gribbz
09-28-2010, 11:20 AM
Bassnectar and Swedish House Mafia are pretty good choices from your survey.

I agree with pretty much all of Higgy's post. Spend more of your budget on talent rather than a gimmick(foam pit, water slides etc.)

Edward Sharpe was great last night. He's My Brother, She's My Sister were the opening act and were very good as well. They had a Mamas and the Papas meets the Carter family vibe, quite enjoyable. March Fourth from Portland made a surprise appearance just before the Magnetic Zeros started. They actually marched into the Rialto to promote their show at Congress which served as the after-party. The crowd was really into the show and it was a full house just short of a sell out. Definitely one of the top shows I've seen this year.

Saw this on Pollstar today:

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Tucson leaders came together Wednesday to announce the establishment of The Fund for Civility, Respect and Understanding at the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona. The fund was created by the family of Ron Barber to sustain and build upon the overwhelming support, kindness and compassion that was the community's response to the January 8 shootings in Tucson.

The fund will support nonprofit programs or organizations that work to alleviate the physical and emotional wounds of those involved and affected by the shootings that day. Goals of the fund include helping to improve and treat mental issues as well as unifying diverse communities.

A benefit concert is being held on March 10 at the Tucson Convention Center featuring artists such as Alice Cooper, Jackson Brown and other artists. Tickets for the benefit will go on sale February 19 at 10 a.m. through the Tucson Convention Center Ticket Office and range in price from $25-$95. All proceeds will go to the fund. Damn! They've played Tucson like 3-4 times in the past 2 years but never play Phoenix.

If a band is brave enough, if you will, to even play Arizona in the face of SB 1070 and The Sound Strike's influence, then they will most likely end up in Tucson. That undeniable, small-town/college town, artsy youth atmosphere lends itself nicely against Phoenix's big brother, mean-spirited perceived attitude.

Having said that, it would be nice to see Ghostland play Phoenix. Unfortunately, they would probably end up at the Marquee.

True but the 26th and 27th are still wide open. :) Phoenix and ABQ. lol or Flagstaff and ABQ. We'll see if anything happens though.

I didn't take this information fully into account when I last posted. If there is no other AZ date for either of these bands, then a sellout is possible. It happened to me once with Ween at the Rialto. There was no PHX date on that tour and all the Ween fans travelled down to Tucson. The sellout did occur the night of the show though.

That show was also during the Day of the Dead celebration so I think that factored into the sellout as well. That Ween show was awesome by the way.

The Loft will be showing Rubber starting tonight @ 10pm. It shows each night this week at that time.

In case you don't know anything about the film...
"Rubber is a 2010 French horror comedy film about a tire that comes to life and kills people with its psychic powers. It was directed and written by Quentin Dupieux."

In case you don't know who Quentin Dupieux is....
it's Mr. Oizo.

I will be seeing this sometime this week. Any other interested parties, hit me up.

Oh yeah, Mr. Oizo also did the soundtrack with some help from Gaspard from Justice.

The Fox Theatre is a unique venue. I've seen numerous local performances there, but have never seen a touring act. Unfortunately they have had a very narrow range of shows, mainly catering to Tucson's aging hippies. Examples include booking people like Arlo Guthrie, Bela Fleck and Jim Messina. There was an infamous party thrown there before the restoration involving a local fire juggling troupe. I'm surprised the place didn't burn down.

Here's an interesting factoid from wiki:

"The building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a "Nationally Significant Structure" is so listed due to its unique decor and special acoustical treatment, 'Acoustone', designed due to the advent of "Talkie" movies, and is the only known example of the material in existence."

Hmm. Birthday weekend to go from Thursday through Tuesday so we can head down to Tucson for this show?

I have friends in Tucson who went to both AZ shows last year and said the crowd for Of Montreal in Tucson was way better (more of a dance party) than the Phoenix crowd, fwiw. I went to the Marquee show with a friend who has never seen them before. Their stage show had a bunch of wrestlers on the last tour. He said it reminded him of JCW Juggalo wrestling. Killed it for me.

After having to be out sick two days last week and with a couple of week-long trips already in the offing, I'm probably going to opt out on that show. I'm going to Tucson the weekend before anyway and I'm not really all that jazzed by the last couple of Of Montreal albums. Sunlandic Twins and Hissing Fauna were both terrific but I haven't entirely enjoyed the direction Matt Barnes has taken recently. Just not my thing anymore, I guess. Thanks for the insight all the same, though.

Leslie and the Lys at Club Congress tonight for any Gem Sweater fans. I seriously can't believe they've been around as long as they have.

Somewhat - They are playing the full Sunlandic Twins album during one of their SXSW shows! I hope I get in.

I normally don't bother updating this thread (pretty sure I'm the only regular poster who lives here), but there's some awesome stuff coming up. I'm really excited for St. Vincent/tuneyards, and Spiritualized.

Somewhat Damaged
03-03-2012, 11:09 PM
Huh, didn't realize Spiritualized is playing there as well.

Timestretch: that sounds awesome (re: Of Montreal). I saw them playing in support of that album at Club Congress back in '06. I'd been going to Coachella for a few years by that point but I hadn't really gone to any club shows -- everything was either raves or concerts at arenas. MGMT opened that show and I remember being struck enough by "Electric Feel" that I wrote the title down in my daily planner afterward with the intention of finding the song to download.

Anyway, hope you're able to get into their show at SXSW. And go watch Fiona Apple, even though it'll make me incredibly envious and cause me to dislike you a bit for a little while.

I don't know if I would be able to make the trip the day coming back from Coach. Otherwise, I don't have a problem driving down for shows in Tucson as long as I don't have to work the next morning. Keep the Tuscon thread alive, Rusty Shackleford.

The Drive Tour w/ College, Anoraak, and Electric Youth:

08/07 – Tucson, AZ @ Club Congress

Man, I wish this was on a weekend or came through Phoenix. Don't think a Tuesday Tucson show is going to be feasible. It's been forever since I've caught a show at Congress, like at least 4 years.

When were Beach House at Coachella? Wasn't this year, right? I like their new album & am considering that show.

Divine Fits, the supergroup made of Wolf Parade/Handsome Furs' Dan Boeckner, Spoon's Britt Daniel, and New Bomb Turks' Sam Brown, just released their solid debut LP, A Thing Called Divine Fits . (Listen to a cut from the album, the Boys Next Door cover "Shivers", above). Now, they've unveiled plans for a fall tour of North America, and those dates are below. (Read our interview with Divine Fits about the collaboration here.)

Synthwave bruisers Cold Cave will be joining the band on select dates-- and there's been a shakeup in that band's lineup. Frontman Wes Eisold is now joined by London May (Samhain), Hunter Burgan (AFI), David Scott Stone (LCD Soundsystem, Melvins), and Cody Votolato (Blood Brothers, Jaguar Love). The band will record this November and December for the new Cold Cave album, which is due out next year.
