Rubber Soulive is a huge disappointment.
Is that what they're touring right now?

Im doin a Soulive poster even as we speak for the Sac show.
I'm new to their thing but the youtubes have convinced me that this is a band I want to see/design a poster for.
come to their Indy show. they are all 3 pretty amazing musicians. it's pretty fun watching Neal play the keys line with his right hand and bass lines with his left....at the same fucking time! the only problem is that they've tried vocals the past few albums and it just doesn't work, imo. has anyone hear any of their jams of late?

Definitely interested in Boy 8-Bit. Matthew Dear is fun too.

I did not enjoy him until the last 20 minutes of his set when he opened up for Fake Blood, but I really, really, enjoyed his essential mix this year so I'm glad to see him again.

I didnt make it out to Mezzanine last night for Pete Rock and CL Smooth either so I'd like a report too.

I responded to the Zion-I email newsletter blast and "won" passes to an invite only listening party for their new album "Atomic Clock" at the New Parish in Oakland. It was cool I'd never been there before. DJ Platurn (Oakland Faders) was spinning when I got there. Deuce Eclipse and Juan Caipo from Bang Data did a little stripped down set. Around 8:15 Zion-I came on and intro'd their album and Amp played it from beginning to end. I really like it. I think it is another strong album from them. Then they performed a few of their songs and had a good 10 min freestyle session with Zumbi, Deuce, and DUST. Finished up around 9:30, maybe 100 people there.

I talked to Platurn for a few minutes about the Z-Trip show at Mighty and he said Z-Trip is very excited to return to SF, and he was even excited because its such a deep line up of some of the best DJ in more of a hip hop environment. First time I saw Z-Trip was in early 2008 with Platurn at MILK in SF. Yea Z-Trip spun at Milk of all places.

But back to Zion-I for a second. I posted before that they're doing Nov 20 and 21st at Slim's in SF, but last night I saw a flier with the under card.

11/20 Zion I, Locksmith, Hold Up, Bayliens, DJ Kevvy Kev
11/21 Zion I, Eligh w/ Scarub (Living Legends), Bang Data, Hold Up, Oakland Faders

I want it all, except I can do w/o Brothers, which is unfortunate because they like to include it within their sets.

I'm so glad we get a headlining set and not an opening for LCD set. Though, I am gonna miss seeing LCD, good thing Sasquatch ruled.

Sleigh Bells was likely my biggest surprise find from Coachella. i knew ZERO about them going in (it was a recommendation by Black Swan actually). we'll see if they can replicate the fun.

I want to cry.... 2 mediocre shows at the fox this week:

M.I.A.= Intense show, great lights, crowd was really into it....Only 50 mins long? Come on!

Gogol Bordello= Crowd was mostly digging the show. However they didn't play a good chunk of Super Taranta and one of the only older songs they played was Start Wearing Purple? And they didn't even rock it out nearly as hard as I've seen in the past. Overall I will rate the show a B-. There were some good new song from Trans Cont. Hustle, but they played like 4 slower songs.... There was lighters in the air. WTF Gogol.... W.T.F.?

At least their set was long, they played 2 hours.

GeezrRckr
10-15-2010, 07:07 PM
oh, that blows (about Gogol). i almost got a free tic to that show. i'm less disappointed to have missed it now...that is VERY uncharacteristic of them!

as for M.I.A....well, she can fuck a duck. her increase in rudeness (to her fans) is a direct correlation to her sudden drop in quality (both, in her live performance and in songwriting). she's chasing her tail at this point. she'll soon retreat to the upper crust life she's married into and be forgotten. the sooner the better...pfft.

As it turns out, she is on the next one (apparently). The Coachella set was EXCEEDINGLY packed, seemingly attracting every annoying teenage girl and sorority sister that had shown up at Coachella this year. (While I'm not discounting her talent either) I don't understand the huge draw on our coast for someone that barely charted in the US, once, a couple of years ago.

I'm going out of town in a few days, and not catching any of the stuff coming through next week. Jonsi's going to be my last show for a couple of weeks. For that matter, I have like 5 weeks in the next two months when I won't be around -- it's helping my budget a lot. :P

Competing for NYE in SF would be the uhmmm Prince residency in NYE (if it does indeed turn out to be NYE), or possibly LA if they managed a better event than SF attracts.

no harm in making a thread for SF-centric NYE festivities. that one is going to either be totally LA-heavy or just messy in general.

since you're new here, a word of friendly advice...don't treat this thread like CL. we saw your first post. if people had tix here, they would have responded to it. so spamming us again, only serves to annoy people.

check back a week before the show, if you haven't already scored off CL. just don't keep posting in here every week or you will fall onto people's ignore lists.

We don't have a ton of cathedrals here though, do we? Not like NYC. I've seen a concert at Grace Cathedral which was amazing, but that was a cappella world music so not that much of a stretch.

Bonnie Prince Billy just played the Chapel at Cavalo Point under the GG Bridge.

About 250 or so people.

It would be really cool if Folk Yeah picked them up and put them at one of their crazy venues.

The Brookdale Lodge in Santa Cruz would be awesome as well.

the other act could be enough to grab my attention. plus the production & atmosphere there is much more what I want out of nye...

vs a show at the fox, which is going to be no different than if the same show at the fox happened any other night? except maybe with a countdown.

We regret to inform you that this show has been canceled due to expected inclement weather. As you know, we have gone through with several of these "rain or shine" but the location for THIS one was more vulnerable to weather and rain would drastically effect the experience. The goal of the Silent Frisco series is to bring music back outdoors, and as you can imagine, this carries with it, some risk.

Uhm yea, I maintained for YEARS that I hated Primus (not in a "Primus sucks!" way but refusing to listen to them) because literally every guy I've ever dated in my whole life, going back to teen years was really really into them. I got kind of sick of them because of it. Plus I just like to be contrary.

Friend made me go see them a few years back and I had to admit they were so good. :/

Chatting with my "real life" "non-board" friends who never go out to shows anymore and so far it sounds like they might actually make it out for this.

Foals were absolutely awesome.
My third time seeing them and the best by far.
Incendiary, propulsive, mathematical, passionate, fiery. Just amazing.
It was odd seeing them in such a small club but it was also perfect seeing them in an intimate spot like that.
Sort of amazed that they dont get as much love on this board as tons of other unremarkable acts, but since alot of those acts are puffed up by often irrelevant blog buzz i guess i probably shouldnt be amazed after all.
Asked Yannis about Coachella and he said they really want to play in 2011, so that's all I've got on that front.
These guys just seem to get better and better.
Opener Ebsen and the Witch played a short but powerful set. Def worth checking out. Sort of witch housey mildly goth/ethereal. Youube em.

Salah, I am not a Jonsi fanatic like the rest of these (I have never even listened to his solo album), but I also thought it was beautiful. The visuals were stunning. I am not sure I have ever seen a concert where the visuals were quite so impeccable and well connected to the music without being obvious. I was completely enthralled by them (while sober) and for most of the show didn't even notice his band as I couldn't take my eyes away from the projection.

The music was beautiful, the Fox was a great setting for the show, and it was one of the most respectful crowds I've been in a long time (ie, no talking over quiet music). Would see him again. :)

I could not have guessed anything was missing. The visuals were amazing. And I'm one of those who hates when people go on about lights or projections or whatnot. :)

It took me several minutes to notice that the small units on the sides of the stage had something different than was on the main backdrop to the stage.

And over and over again I was struck by how well the visuals were designed, that at some points, things (creatures, raindrops, etc) seemed to become three dimensional.

ooh, this sounds rad (bah, Slim's)!

California roots-punk legends X will celebrate the 30th anniversary of their debut Los Angeles by playing the album in its entirety during a run of Christmas dates along the West Coast — including a pair of special San Francisco shows featuring the record’s producer, Ray Manzarek of The Doors.

X’s original lineup — John Doe, Exene Cervenka, Billy Zoom and D.J. Bonebrake — are scheduled to play nine shows in total, beginning Dec. 15 in Hollywood, Calif., and running through Jan. 1 in Portland, Ore.; Manzarek will join the band onstage for the first time in 30 years at concerts on Dec. 28 and 29 at Slim’s in San Francisco.

In addition to a track-by-track performance of Los Angeles, each show also will feature a screening of “X: The Unheard Music,” the 1986 film about the band that mixed documentary footage with live performances filmed between 1980 and 1985.

Dec. 28: Slim’s, San Francisco, CA (w/ Ray Manzarek)
Dec. 29: Slim’s, San Francisco, CA (w/ Ray Manzarek)

My group and I had a horrible time at Ghost Ship last year. The crowd was whack, the music sucked (not only did the power cut out a couple of times, but the headliners trainwrecked more than once as well), the venue doesn't have a view of SF (nit-picking I know), theres more but I cant think of it now.

The only good things I can say about that night are; it was cool being the ONLY people on the Bay Bridge and the Monkeys swinging strobe light installation was wicked cool.

There are a lot of shows on the 19th! I'm already booked and don't think I could swing two shows that night.

Saw the billy idol listing, considered it as a "satisfy 8 year old me" but... so expensive. They couldn't possibly be selling many tickets at that price.

I got a couple questions for you cool people in the know.

I'm going to the Of Montreal/Janelle Monae show on Friday night at the Warfield, but I also want to go to the NinjatuneXX party at 1015 Folsom. I already RSVP for the Ninjatune party, but since it is free I'm scared that it is going to be at capacity and I'm not going to be able to get in. I figure that the Of Montreal show will be over with around 12, and then I will try to hop a cab for a short ride over to the Ninjatune party. What are the odds that I am going to be able to pull this off? Maybe since there is so much shit to do that night, the Ninjatune party wont hit capacity, but who the fuck knows. What do you guys think?

Also, the wife and I are planning on some basic quick and easy costumes for Gorrillaz the next night, are we going to look like tools, or do people dress up for concerts on Halloween in SF?

Thanks for helping out the SF newbie over here.

And if anyone else is going to these shows, I'll buy the first round.:)

I would say, not good. But I don't know much, other than the only other free party i've been to @ 1015 hit capacity well b4 midnight. But it also wasn't halloween weekend. Seems like a lot of people are talking about it.

I would book it once that last note ends @ of montreal. You might have a chance.

Yeah, I'm going to inch my way towards the door during the encore so that we are basically the first people out after the show and I hope there are cabs waiting to go.

Thanks for the input, Zimmy and Pot!

The RSVP for the ninjatune party was just a promo gimmick, they have enough RSVPs to fill the place 4 times over at least. That said, only a fraction will show up, but that fraction will still probably fill the place by midnight at the latest.

Yeah, thats gonna suck if its at capacity by 12. I would have rather paid $20 for tickets and know that I was going to get in.

Just got my costume set up for the Gorillaz show though, so at least I got that going for me. :thu

Yeah I'm gonna get there early, the line at 1015 can get kinda gnarly for $20 parties so I'm pretty sure this one is going to be ridiculous. There's a lot of shit going on tonight but anecdotally I don't know anybody going anywhere but Ninja Tune. To the dude above, I'm pretty sure you're not gonna be able to get in after Of Montreal but you might as well try. Mezzanine's not too far from 1015 so you could hit up the Fake Blood show if you don't get in.

Lotus, Ninja Tune, Freaker's Ball. All way fun.

I showed up to ninja tune at 1:30 expecting to not get in, and there was a fat line, but i just slipped in the front of it as they were literally filing people in sans ID check. Awesome, Til I got inside. Everything was moist. Evvvverythinnnng... I've never seen 1015 like that. So humid you didn't have to move to start sweating. Must have been way more busy before I got in there. There was some space. Amon was killing it in the main room. I heard eskmo was good. And ill gates, always amazing.

Freaker's Ball had me grinning the entire night. Such a FUN party.
