I'm gonna rape a dog the next time I see another awesome show at the Indy, it's frustrating being under 21.

Nope, I'm very far beyond - have only listened to a few 2010 albums and even have a bunch of 2009 ones still queued. I miss being able to listen to music while working.

But I saw them last year and enjoyed them a lot. It's more a matter of whether I will *really* go to shows 5 of 7 nights that week :)

so they announced Bob Dylan at the Warfield. No advanced sales. No online sales. You have to lineup. Buy ONE ticket. Walk right in.

All tickets are general admission and will be available at The Warfield box office on the day of the show only. No advance tickets will be available anywhere for this performance. Admission to the show is $60 cash. No credit cards or checks will be accepted.

The box office and the doors will open at 5:30 pm on August 25th with show time at 8 pm. Ticketholders will enter the venue immediately at the time of purchase, one ticket per customer. Line-ups will begin no earlier than noon on day of performance.

Goldenvoice Vice President of Booking, David Lefkowitz said, "Given the state of touring and how fees have escalated, it was a real breath of fresh air to do something very consumer oriented by eliminating all ticketing charges, it's almost a throwback to another time. It's been almost twenty years since Bob Dylan played The Warfield and in my opinion, he is an Artist that needs no big promotions or hoopla. He comes, he plays, and it's an incredible experience.

the two youtubes i just listened to/watched reminded me more of 90's alternative rock than britpop.

I bet that the increase of profit margins is actually fairly negligible. It's also possible that they have to pay a penalty fee for LiveNation for circumventing standard ticket procedures (or part of the normal fees is included in the ticket price).

It sounds miserable to me too. I would do it for someone like Prince, but I don't understand who would wait in line for hours to get a ticket for Bob Dylan, especially as he's playing Oakland the day before. The guy is playing State Fairs, for god's sake.

probably not true, but pollstar has Holy Fuck playing Hemlock Tavern on 10/15. Their touring partner Indian Jewelry is headlining a show there, that night, so I suspect that it's a mistake, but that would be a neat spot to catch them.

Id assume they are still printing tickets and handing them out at the door which means LN is still getting their share. If they don't, they pay between $1 and $2.50 a ticket sold... Where I see them having higher margins is in avoiding the CC processing fees which is a percentage of each transaction.

Either way I think this is a poor idea.

Just read this from Aaron Axelson's (Live 105) facebook that
Spookfest 2010 is done!!! Live 105's massive subsonic Halloween party @ cow palace is unveiled next Saturday @ midnight. Epic line up!

So I guess this subsonic massive portion (rave thats not a rave that lots of non-ravers will go to) is back at the Cow Palace. Live 105 is lumping the Gorillaz show as "day 2" of their halloween party at Oracle.

maaaan I do NOT want to go to the cow palace. I've avoided it thus far but if Underworld and a few other amazing acts are playing I'm gonna have to. I've heard pretty bad things... is it really that awful? what's the sound like? how many candy kids?

fikus222

I think the last time I went to the Cow Palace was for Cyberfest '03 and there was a large police presence, a ton of candy kids, okay acoustics and overpriced concessions.

BigBryan
08-21-2010, 08:01 PM
Im one of those that doesnt go to raves. I went last year (and plan/hope to go this year) I felt pretty comfortable and safe that night. I felt a littler older than many last year but didnt really see a lot of candy kids, but I dont rave so what do I really know.

I dont know what radio station bay area candy kids listen to. Do you? Only time I really make it a point of listening to the radio, if its an option, is for Live 105's Subsonic and Soundcheck. I like the electronic stuff they play on Subsonic for the most part and its helped expand my electronic interests. They even play more of the hip hop I like than our other hip hop radio stations do. I'd expect a crowd closer to a BFD or warped tour like crowd because thats typically what they play on the normal station.

tonight on SUBSONIC! (12-3am on San Francisco radio station LIVE 105) brand new tracks by MIAMI HORROR, SOULWAX, ULRICH SCHNAUSS, CHROMEO, SANDER VAN DOORN, DEADMAU5, EL-P, TING TINGS, CHEMICAL BROTHERS, ADAM FREELAND and an ARCADE FIRE remix

I'd bet he plays some spookfest stuff tonight and/or is included in the above list.

ha...hello old man. well, i only know a few bands on here so i'll let others weigh in (calling Jared). but, the one that i am most interested in is Grouper (who opened for AC at the Fox...not sure she's your bag, actually). i'm also curious about Oneohtrix Point Never and The Alps. but, honestly, i'm in the same boat as you on this one so if anyone else can weigh in, please do.

White Rainbow - Prism Of Eternal Now

Was kinda curious about the Ninja Tune party... it looks like there are two parties, though. The 29th is a Friday, 30th is a Saturday, maybe they're hitting SF and LA in a weekend? A lot of tours do that, it doesn't seem out of the question. On the other hand it could just be a typo, but I don't know why he'd list a party from LA AND typo it. Anyway, if that party's real and at 103 Harriet... holy shit

GeezrRckr
08-31-2010, 01:44 PM
it's all good. you can find your sweet spots at both of those places. just wait till you hit the Indy and the Rickshaw. those two have great sound and are really intimate. BOTH is pretty good too, but not for sound really (they could use a new PA). it's got flavor and that back patio is badass. i think my least favorite room in town is 330 Ritch. i wish it wasn't so b/c i dig Popscene, but their PA is really, really bad and the layout is kind of shyte, imo. plus, their security must think they're working at Ruby Skyye or something...total tools.

dorkfish
08-31-2010, 01:45 PM
The Warfield isn't outright awful. Shows that would get booked there are usually booked at the Fox Oakland. It's a similar setup, but the Fox usually trumps it in quality. The Grand is pretty bad, though.

guedita

chiapet
08-31-2010, 02:10 PM
Yea, I suppose I should make it clear that I don't think either venue is /terrible/ by general standards. We happen to be a bit spoiled with regards to venues, so it's easy to cite faults with places that are far better than venues in other cities.

Some people hate the Regency, I don't. Some people love the Warfield, I don't. ;)

Vasoline Groove
08-31-2010, 02:16 PM
Yeah, I've been to the Indy and thought it was a nice small venue. Saw Caribou there, and the sound was definitely loud and clear. Plus, I was super happy that they had $5 Mirror Pond Pale Ales.

I am looking forward to checking out the Warfield, Fillmore, and Great American Music Hall.

What's BOTH?

So far I've liked the venues that I have been to. And the crowd at these shows are way more into it then other places I have seen shows.

anyone know how much the Massive Attack/Theivary Corporation show in Berkeley will cost? I'm guessing around $60....is that a good estimate? Tickets come out in couple of days from what I've heard.

Black Star/Chappelle was pretty awesome. It was a weird set up. Went something like:

30 minutes of Chappelle. 30 minutes of Black Star. 45 minutes of Chappelle. 30 minutes of Black Star. Since cell phones weren't allowed, it's hard to know exactly how long things went, but that close.

Black Star did 5 or so tracks from their album and 3 new songs (including one that they just played over the PA that was written and recorded the night before at MC Hammer's studio. MC Hammer might also be on the track, but the PA/DJ pitchshifted the track to the point where it was hard to hear what exactly was going on. They also did a handful of their solo tracks.

GeezrRckr
09-04-2010, 02:08 PM
wow, that sounds pretty rad. how did they deal with the phone thing? how did you like the new tracks? most importantly, what is Chappelle talking about these days and when in fuck is he starting up his show again?!

dorkfish
09-04-2010, 02:18 PM
We just left our phones in the car, but they had a mandatory phone "coat" check for those that didn't heed warning from security every 2 minutes that phones were allowed. Full pat down, so I doubt anyone snuck one in.

The MC Hammer track was hard to hear, but sounded promising with an angrier backing beat. Can't really recall specifics for the other new tracks. And by solo material, I mean that it was mostly their solo tracks where the other collaborated.

Chappelle talked about whatever. It sounded more standup-oriented than when I saw him a few years ago, so maybe he's actually working on something. He mentioned that he did some sets in DC awhile back, as well. He said that he doesn't think that anyone will be ready to give him a new show since he has a bit of a reputation as a guy that will quit and run away to Africa at the drop of a hat. When I saw him awhile back, he didn't seem to keen on ever doing TV again, unless someone were to give him 100% creative control with zero corporate meetings and zero outside influence and he'd want the ability to stop/start the season whenever he felt like it. So that's not too likely to happen unless a TBS/FX type is willing to go with all of his demands.

shame there's so few people with vision in that biz. it's really not that difficult nor that much of a content risk either. the man is a bonafide talent with a pretty massive audience (hungry to boot). i hope someone steps up.

just get the tic in 75 mins and be in SF on Monday by 9ish. he won't come on any earlier then 10 (more like 11). easy.

but in case you don't make it there on Monday, check out Beak> there on Tues. the reports from ATP are making me excited for it.

Im a big Mos' fan, but Ill prob miss this show. I just saw Black Star at the Fox, but $25 for an Independent show is a good price for someone like Mos.

My main question is does anyone know why his shows are promoted this way; with very little advanced noticed and even some times day of show announcement(s). He does smaller sized venues which helps, but I remember once buying tickets in the morning for a just announced Ruby Skye show that evening and that place isn't that small.

Chapelle is booked in similar fashion sometimes too, with little advanced notice, but I havent noticed anyone else who does shows that way.

Well, they likely enjoy the smaller clubs, don't want to pay any promotions fees, and know that they probably have a guaranteed sellout. Also, it creates a small buzz of excitement when a show is announced a day or so before the actual date.

I'm not super keen on Beak, but I was thinking of going to their SF Amoeba show at 6pm on Wednesday the 8th.

I've never been to a show at Amoeba. Will this be crowded and necessitate a real early arrival?

shakermaker113

amoeba shows do not usually require an early arrival. not if you are tall enough to see over the cd racks, at least.

Hmm, I'll probably go to Beak's Amoeba show then...even though I think they sound like the portions of new Portishead that I don't like.

GeezrRckr
09-04-2010, 06:30 PM
yeah, i wouldn't go in thinking Portishead at all. it's really not close...less the samples being similar.

and..."new" Portishead? wat, man?

fikus222
09-04-2010, 06:40 PM
IMO there some similarities between Third and Beak's material, for instance We Carry On, Nylon Smile and Silence. These overlaps are the portions I don't really like in Third, which is good, but is my least favorite Portishead album.

GeezrRckr
09-04-2010, 07:04 PM
yeah, i'm not hearing it.

but, then again...Third was my favorite album of 2008. it's a masterpiece and i have nothing but effusive praise for it. for them to come back and not only be (remain) hugely relevant, but to deliver something that demonstrates an appropriate progression of their music after a 10yr layoff is/was just remarkable.

fikus222
09-04-2010, 07:52 PM
It could just be a superficial similarity 'tween the two.

I understand why so many people are enamored with Third, however I am hoping that Portishead's upcoming album is somewhat divergent.

GeezrRckr
09-04-2010, 08:21 PM
fair enough. i'd be very cool with that. anything from that trio from Bristol will surely make me jizz.

Hi Matt

As far as I can tell it's a free party held in conjunction with XLR8R magazine - presumably you RSVP them when they officially announce it. Maybe check their site? I'll mail my guy over there and see what the deal is

contacting xlr8r now...
