I work at Temple, there have been a lot of changes lately, especially for events like this, we have also been having vendors/aritists doing live paintings for the Re:Creation parties and will for the Free the Robots show. Obviously I am bias, but you should give it another shot when there is a show you are interested in.

I was there more recently for the prefuse 73 show where they had the setup you're speaking of. The place just isn't really my cup of tea, but I don't mind going if there are acts that I really enjoy.

Haha you have, I don't know what was up with that one night, but I have never experienced that, and I am there a lot. Its not like we would ever discriminate against a group of people coming, and I'm sure had we turned them away you guys would have been like, "what the fuck Temple, why didn't you let that group of trannies in?" So...my response is, you live in San Francisco :)

And you are right, if a club turned away trannies at the door, I would be bitching about their fascist door policies.

Definitely going. Its going to be a weird set up, supposedly they are limiting the number of people to around 8,000 in the parking lot where it is set up. Kinda screwy. But I don't see how they can limit the number of people that are going to be on the beach watching from there. Hopefully it wont be too windy because that would fuck with the sound and then listening from the beach is going to suck. Ready to rock out on Sunday. Happy that I'm taking Monday off.

Edit: Hope they can get a Culprit type thing going during the summer months. :)

chiapet
02-19-2012, 01:43 PM
That would be awesome, I'm guessing it's very unlikely at the W though, unless it is a really small friends-of-friends thing. Anything larger seems like it could be really disruptive for the hotel guests. The Standard is... very much a party hotel on the weekends,. My limited experience with Culprit parties is that there is a lot of non-guest foot traffic, loud partying, etc that goes on because of it. I'm not sure how the W would feel about similar shenanigans going down all day/night. :)

Last summer, some of us went to Silent Disco at Jones. It was AWESOME. I had really hoped that they would continue doing similar events, but so far nothing.

You're probably right. Think the slo-house and nu-disco stuff appeals to a much broader range of people than other strains of contemporary house and techno. Seemed like half the Marina was at the recent Benoit & Sergio show. Wouldn't be surprised if this pulls a similar crowd.

There are plenty of free parties here. This one is a private party with a much more limited capacity than is usual for these types of events, the performers have to be paid, as well as the rent for the space (and their bartenders and staff). This promoter usually does $10 pre-sale tickets, even when though they book world class talent. (For example, a couple of weeks ago, I saw Lucy and Peter van Hoesen each do 3 hour long sets at one of their events, for $10, and I saw Tiger & Woods for $10 last year). So trust us that they are not trying to rip us off with $20/25/30 tickets, it's a matter of covering the expenses.

I'm to the point that I would rather pay a little for a show, the free events can get too packed and draw really craptastic crowds of people who aren't very interested in the music and just showed up to have someplace to get fucked up with their friends.

Not sure why you're posting here though, surely there is some pertinent thread for you to talk about your DC show. :)

I'm interested in seeing Youth Lagoon at The Independent on April 13th, but it's sold out. However, there are 100 tickets available on StubHub. I would wait until the end of March to buy Youth Lagoon tickets. I would think that YL is a concert that will sell out in the secondary market eventually but I dont think the value of such ticket is worth more then 2x face. I may be wrong about how popular YL is but I would think secondary tickets should end up less then Foster the People last year which also sold out well in advance. IIRC Foster the People tix ended up 3x face right before the show but hovered 2x most of the time leading up.

going up to the bay area this weekend (from LA)... wanted to check out Cloud Nothings at Bottom of the Hill but just noticed it's sold out, do any of you locals know if this venue is known for releasing tickets at the door? Also, any idea when their shows usually end? I was planning on taking the Bart back to Berkeley where I'm staying...

AlecEiffel
03-01-2012, 01:05 PM
They do occasionally release tickets at the door after the bands start playing (sometimes not until the headliner has already started), but it's likely that you might just stand outside for hours and not get in. It's dependent on ticket holders not showing up.

GeezrRckr
03-01-2012, 02:10 PM
That may happen at some of the venues around town, but not at BOTH. I've tried a few times and they just won't do it (nor do they really give a shit).

And, should you find your way in, it's possible you can make BART, but the show will likely end at midnight (give or take 30 mins) and you'll be hard-pressed to get to the closest BART stn from there in time for to catch the last train. As great a venue as BOTH is, it's a logistical nightmare on multiple levels.

I don't know about that. I've spent $80 to go to El Cerrito from San Francisco, which is only 10 minutes north of Berkeley and is closer off the highway than most of Berkeley.

If you want to do it cheap, your other option would be to wait for the transbay bus, but I don't think that starts running until 2:00 am. But it would be much cheaper.

Or you just leave a little early (around 11:45) and not worry about any of this other shit.

No, this has been my experience at BOTH the past several years that I've been going there. I've actually never tried to do that for Noise Pop, just regular shows. It's just not worth hauling all the way out to Portero Hill if you don't already have a ticket, imo.

AlecEiffel
03-01-2012, 07:13 PM

Yea, mine are also scheduled to arrive when I'm gone. I'm counting on being able to call UPS and reschedule the delivery -- they won't do that until at least one attempt has been made though. An awesome thing to be thinking about while I'm out of town and working 12+ hour days. ;)
Wait. I thought you weren't going. Or was that a dream?
Am I dreaming about you?

10/05 Amon Tobin ISAM at The Greek Theater

ISAM, again? Really?

Well, I still have not really.... given ISAM my attention at a show. But I feel like after 3 tries, if I haven't, it's not meant to be. Could be amazing in that setting, he's just touring it to death.

Good god with the overkill on the ISAM. I am of the opinion that, while the ISAM setup is "neato", Amon Tobin's music was far better and more interesting (funkier even) before all of ISAM blinky-lights and album business. That being said...

I have 2 weeks off of work starting march 10. It seems like there is a ton of good shit to enjoy on the weekend of the 16-18th: BBF @ public works with Layo and Bushwanker (who I haven't heard in ages) + the Hospital Records gig at The Factory on the 16th, Lee Burridge @ PW on the 17th. Anyone have plans for these or any other good ones during that time? (March 10th-24th) *cue Heidi's statement about her ability to be at all places at all times :o

completely agree. having said that I still haven't really gotten to experience it and would like to, so I plan on going to the show at the greek.

Holy crap the 16th is PACKED! Would really like to check out Magda as well. I don't know a lot about Lindstrom, but what I have heard thus far is really quality stuff. I've also just really started to seek out some new acts/tune to get into. The job I have now is easily the most challenging thing I have ever done and doesn't leave much time for outside pursuits. Soon come though. I have only briefly heard about this Creator's Project thing (Obviously I know who they are from Coachella 11) I'm going to do some net research, but feel free to fill me in.

Also J Phlip at Monarch on 3/15.

I've gotta say that I have been unimpressed with all things Dirtybird. I like the way they do things, the music just isn't to my taste. Insert subject-verb disagreement for you to nitpick here. : )

*EDIT: just check out the Creators' Project website and signed up for the mailing list. Hopefully some performances (other than the awesome installations) up my alley there.

Anyone heard any rumors as to the CP lineup, apart from Squarepusher? I'm hoping for something like NYC's lineup ... and dreading the thought of missing out on a ticket.

Well, unfortunately I can't be in all places at all times, but on the 16th, (I am probably having people over to my place pre-shows), I'm starting at the Factory, then going to Magda. On the 17th, I hope to be going to Creator's Project (and hope there is something good that night -- allegedly Squarepusher), but if that doesn't work out, I'm going to Lee Burridge. Oh, and going to Riva Starr on the 15th. A bunch of friends will be in town that weekend, so there will be some adventures on Friday night.

Riva Starr is at Vessel, so it will be one of those RSVP and show up by 11 to get in for free deals.

What else... of Montreal on the 22nd, Nina Kraviz and Rolando on the 24th.

The Lab routinely hosts noise shows. It is a very small room. Probably won't sell advance tickets (although it has happened before).
