It says that doors for Nosaj are at 9, show starts at 10. I'm wondering how "fancy" the attire is supposed to be at a place like this.

We had a discussion about it many pages back, I was thinking of going this summer. Someone (Drew, I think?) had mentioned it's just a bit upscale. Being that it's SF, I'd assume as long as you're not wearing running shoes and "sports" apparel, you'd be fine. I was going to wear a dress.

(Not so) sadly, I will be in Seattle tomorrow night so won't be going :)

Some good shows announced today:

2/2 - Secret Chiefs 3/Dengue Fever (co-headlining) @ GAMH
2/3 - Dengue Fever/Secret Chiefs 3 (co-headlining) @ Slim's
2/10 - Los Campesinos! @ GAMH (think I mentioned this one before)
2/10 - Saul Williams @ Slim's
3/1 - Zola Jesus @ GAMH
4/6 - Swervedriver @ Slim's (they're still around?)

All on sale Sunday.

Those Secret Chiefs ones bum me out.. will be out of town. Definitely worth catching. (I've seen Dengue Fever a couple of times... really boring live IMO).

I might try to catch Zola Jesus since I keep missing her/them.

My friends attended the little boots show at the clift said the venue can hold up to about 1000 and the show starts at 11. They don't check for the RSVP. Just for 21+. I'm probably gonna show up around 1030 cause drinks are overpriced. Gonna prefunk at home

Nosaj was great. Pretty similar set compared to what he played at coachella. The new tracks are fire. Clift sucks tho. The sound is sub par and the crowd sucks. It was packed and everyone was very chatty. Drinks are a minimum of 10 bucks. I had friends that were stuck outside in line and they got there around 1045. That's about the same time he started. It was pretty much over by midnight

Soul Clap. I hate you guys right now. The only consolation I have is the trouble I'll get into in Seattle while you're at public works. :(

Saw Baths tonight. He exceeded my expectations by far yet I wasn't completely satisfied with the show (the crowd wasn't very good). Looking forward to his show with Dntel in SF next week, now, ...and hoping slim's doesn't also have a shitty crowd.

Yes!!!!! How's Vessel? Never been there.

A-Trak is one of my favorites right now, but I don't think he gets a lot love around theses parts. The Duck Sauce business doesn't help much. His Fool's Gold Radio monthly mixes are consistently great and his DJ set at Coachella was the most fun of the weekend imo.

Wow, talk about a downgrade.

I take it Vessel isn't a great venue. I wonder if this is because he has been around so much lately.

chiapet
12-10-2011, 08:50 AM
Vessel itself is fine, Bud, it's the crowd/staff/etc. literally all of the seating in the place is VIP; expensive/lousy drinks; clusterfuck unisex restroom with attendants expecting tips; and exactly the crowd you'd expect all this to attract. That said, the sound is good. I go when it's free and just try to ignore other people. I think it would be pretty bad on a Friday though.

It was awesome, but way too short, I think Tycho only played for about an Hour. Dive was a highlight for me, and they closed with Coastal Break which was also really nice. The visuals were on point, and the sound was really good. The crowd was also really mellow, but into it. Only down side, I didn't realize The Independent was so strict. My friend didn't get in for being to drunk, but she was no way near too intoxicated to enjoy a concert on a Saturday night. Its a venue with a bar, come on.

No fake ID, she's over 21. I mean she was definitely a little drunk, but wasn't out of control, I just thought it was a little bit ridiculous. The door guy was definitely on a power trip. He stared at my ID for seriously about 2 minutes before he let me in, and my ID looks exactly like me. It was the most intense ID check I have experienced in San Francisco since before I was 21.

Oh, my bad. I thought I text'd you after the show and you said you hadn't. Well, they've only gotten better (even if a little less weird).

I don't know what to say to you about Deerhoof other than to tell you that they are one of my most favorite live bands the past 5 years or so (which will likely matter not one bit to you since our musical taste cleaves off at the really far end of the weird). Just go in blind. That's all I will say for the time being. You might be pleasantly surprised. Or, you might head upstairs after the 2nd song and go cruise the poster room.

I've been to several of Montreal shows. Here is a list of people I have seen in the crowd: a caveman, fairies, shirtless fat dude covered in glitter, transsexuals, frat boys, art school brats, hipsters, high school girls, zombies, drug zombies, neo hippies, a gay hitler, regular queer folk, music geeks, and Columbians.

I almost protested that assessment, but it's actually quite right now that I've thought about it for a moment. Lucky kids....miss MM a lot!

Modest Mouse will be performing at the opening night of Macworld at a concert entitled Macworld | iWorld Opening Night BLAST. The show will be taking place at The Warfield in San Francisco on January 25, 2012. Tickets are available now it seems through some kind of registration process, for what I believe is $35 (but this may be on top of the ticket price for the Macworld expo being held at Moscone Center). Also it sounds like there is a special deal on at the moment, and the price will be going up tomorrow.

From the DNA Lounge:

Turns out that our headlining DJ last night, Alan Braxe, has a bladder control problem. That's the generous explanation for why he decided, in the middle of his DJ set, to turn around and piss on our back-wall curtain instead of using the restroom which is twenty feet away.

After his set, when we had tossed him out, he was aghast that we chose not to let him back in. We said that we'd be happy to let him in if he paid us what it was going to cost to have the curtain cleaned. He declined. Also he threatened to sue us. "For what?" I inquired. "Because I wouldn't come out and talk to him," Barry tells me.

They pulled a huge crowd at OSL. I bet this shit will sell out.

I hope they have new material, because if your playing a headlining show at the Greek, one album of material just doesn't seem right.

Maybe they will play Pumped up Kicks five times and everyone can high five while singing along to song about a Columbine-style murder spree.

It's hard to judge this one. It'll either easily sell out, or it will be an awkward "This concert has been moved to the Fox Oakland" situation.

Ross1492
12-14-2011, 08:43 PM
Hmmm, I'm having difficulty chossing between the two. Haven't been to either venue. I worry that AYLI's party will cannibalize the Ame crowd. I really should just go to Ame, since he (unless its a they for this one) hardly ever tours the states, but an emptyish peaktime dance floor irks me.

chiapet
12-14-2011, 09:09 PM
I don't mind empty dance floors at all. Space is good. Plus, isn't the actual dance floor/venue portion of Monarch small? (I haven't been in there since the remodel/change in ownership so maybe I'm mis-remembering what the space looks like).

Beatbox is a lot of fun though. Without having been to Monarch, I still feel confident that Beatbox will be the better venue of the two.

It's San Francisco, but it also depends on the show. Security at a Cypress Hill show overlooks more than security at something like Andrew Bird. Don't do anything stupid and you'll probably be fine.

Also, it's a Goldenvoice venue, so expect a security pat down. Mostly just a weapons check, but again, don't be stupid.

Got my Hard ticket (not a wristband). I asked the guy giving me the ticket if it guarantees entrance. He said it does not and recommended getting there early.

The tickets are also assigned by floor or balcony. So, hopefully we don't get a Hard Summer '09 tomorrow.

Woot, I have GA Floor ticket.

Dumb question but is it too late from me to get tickets to that hard event

Short answer, yes (you had to RSVP to get on the list for a ticket). Long answer, maybe not (it's possible not all the RSVP'd tix are claimed, which would then make the leftovers available to everybody).

xanman86
12-15-2011, 12:45 PM

Before 8pm this evening, you have to go down to the Warfield to pick up your ticket.

OddZilla
12-15-2011, 01:04 PM
You need to go to the warfield today to nab a wristband. I think you have until 8:00 pm to do it. Otherwise you cannot get into the event tomorrow. On top of that it is first come, first served so an RSVP does not guarantee your entry.

th2w0
12-15-2011, 02:37 PM
Just grabbed a hard GA floor ticket at the Warfield. Looked like they might run out of floor tix soon, but then again its hard to say how many could have been hidden behind the table. He did say that there are more RSVPs than capacity, but not a large amount. My guess is if you show up at 10:30 you'd be ok, but its really hard to say as they themselves don't even seem to know what the turn out will be like.

So Monarch gets my seal of approval. I am *really* looking forward to seeing Max there in January now. Sound was good, the space is small/fucking intimate. The crowd was... interesting.... had me worried at first because it seemed like people who were out at the bar (upstairs) who heard there was "something going on downstairs" and turned up to slosh around with their beers. But it got a LOT better just before midnight and the whole place was jamming pretty hard by the time we left to go to Beatbox.

I am a fan of: dancing on the steps; feeling like I'm sneaking into some place's basement; and that they not only allow in/outs to smoke but they also allow you in/outs between the 'venue' downstairs and the normal bar upstairs.

fikus222

Thoroughly enjoyed myself at Hard last night.

James Murphy was excellent.

After the show, I ended up at a dub-step party in the Mission. It was the same party we all went to last year, the one where they advertised the venue was to be filled with snow and Cara met the creepy Santa. Well, there wasn't any snow there this year either.

chiapet
12-17-2011, 10:46 AM

Last night was great. The LED wall was really awesome, and I hadn't been to the warfield yet and it's a sick venue. The first half of Eye was pretty good, which surprised me since the second half was absolutely godawful. Proxy was great, James Murphy was fucking fantastic, and Major Lazer was entertaining for about 15 minutes and then boring after that. Diplo does not know how to shut the fuck up and play music

zachyd
12-17-2011, 11:11 AM
Holy shit, last night was a blast. Eye was cool for awhile but the rest of the night was better. Proxy totally surprised me as I'd never listened to him. Good stuff though.

But James Murphy stole the show. Top 5 DJ set for me, I was totally blown away. Really helps make up for the lack of live LCD in my life. It was just 90 minutes of awesome disco-funk, and I was grooving the whole time.

Major Lazer was fun, mostly because the whole crowd was really into it, but yeah I wish there was less talking and more music...

chiapet
12-17-2011, 11:16 AM
If you like disco-y sort of things, I'd suggest keeping an eye on Beatbox's bookings. The venue is pretty new but they've booked a couple of great disco-influenced acts so this fall. I mention it because the crowd has been GREAT at every show I've gone to at this venue so far. Getting down so hard it's almost a bit sleazy. People are dancing, NOT talking, and you feel like a douchebag if you take your phone or camera out... :)

I'm working almost every weekend for the next few months so Thursday night shows are all I have to hang my hat on. Excited for Tale of Us.

hmm. dan the automator at rickshaw stop on thursday.

That looks like fun. I'm taking Friday off anyways, so maybe I will hit that up.

I also saw on the Rickshaw website that Talvin Singh is coming 4/13. That looks like a Sanfranchella show.

It's the same venue as 1015. In terms of crowd, think of Ruby Skye and then lower the bar a few notches. Tickets are on sale now:

Eh, I feel like the shows promoted under "103 Harriet" have a better crowd than Ruby Skye.

For a Passion Pit DJ set?

Good point. But people who would pay $10 to see a Passion Pit DJ are actually the 'bad crowd' that I'm talking about.

You make a good point. It's been awhile since I've been to either venue.

I am really looking forward to seeing what shows pop up around the Hospitality date. Especially if there is anything good happening after it ends. I trust that Cara and Heidi will inform me of anything that may be of interest. Even though it's 2.5 months away, I can't wait! It will be my first trip out of Washington since moving here - I need to get away!!!!

How's the New Parish? Seeing Starfucker tomorrow!

Its a very cool intimate venue. Its nice they have an outdoor patio for the smokers. Good sound, reasonably priced drinks.

I'm checking out Starfucker at GAMH on Friday.

For the people who've been to Beatbox, how did you like it? I am playing in a DJ battle there on Friday :I

Loved it. It's primarily a gay club but the DJ events I've been to have had a really varied crowd. It's never been uncomfortably packed, everyone dances, very little standing-around-looking-bored-playing-with-phones. Bar prices have been fair, staff is cool. Sound is good. No complaints. ;)

BTW, the DJs set up on the floor - there is a stage, but it's behind the DJ, for the crowd to dance on. :)
