I've only been to Ruby Skye twice and I enjoyed myself both times. Sure its on the cheesier side of the big club spectrum, but its a pretty cool space with decent sound. Not sure how the crowd would be, but I would think it would be better for a Sasha show then a Tiesto show. I saw Judge Jules there and it wasn't that full. I would think that Sasha would bring out more people.

And you can tell all your friends that you went to the club that was in the Facebook movie.

Also, I would recommend trying to get in somewhat early, because the lines to get in can be kinda long if you wait too late to go.

The one time I went to Ruby Skye was to see Sasha. A lot of the ladies in the bathroom upstairs were screaming, "ohmygodBITCH!" in that way where they aren't really calling their friend a bitch, but they sort of are. They were really impressed with how many jello shots they took in the limo. They were at Ruby fucking Sky! (bitch!)

I'm pretty sure I've only been to 21+ shows at Ruby Skye, and yes, the crowd is awful. I've only been there a few times, but each time it was constant onslaught of overly drunk people talking about finding drugs and how drunk/stoned/fucked up they were. Tons of bros. That venue pulls a suburban crowd, that doesn't care what they're seeing, they just want to go someplace and be seen and get messed up.

That Sasha is playing doesn't change that. But you do what you've got to do. :)

Vasoline Groove
10-26-2011, 03:22 PM
Well, when I saw Judge Jules there it wasn't super brotastic, but I don't think that the Judge really brings the bros.

Or maybe I'm a bro and just didn't realize. ;)

Was it on a weekday? The crowd is not as bad on weekdays... BART stops running, people have to get home so they can get up for work, etc. Ruby Skye is the most miserable venue in SF, for me. I would probably still go again for a small number of djs ;)

No it was a Friday night in February. I just think its probably a lot more brotastic if its packed up, and you really cant get away from them.

I wouldn't randomly go into Ruby Skye and expect a great night. But I wouldn't let it scare you away from seeing a dj that you really like.

Anyways, on to more exciting things.

Al, Bean Bag is quite okay and their draft beers are really cheap - the only downside is that everyone else has the same idea so it's very crowded before the show. We could give it a try and have a backup plan if it's too busy.

i'll be at Soulwax as well.

As of right now I have 2 extra "Invited Guest" upstairs wristbands. I've only been to the Indy once so I'm not quite sure what this fully means, but if anyone who's going is interested let me know. I also do not know if you have to arrive with me to get them or if I could give them to you when your inside... If you have my number/fb contact me that way, if not, send me a PM.

I'll be at a company "off-site" all day in SF and heading to the venue around 8:30. I've been a fan of GOOSE for a few years so I'm looking forward to seeing their set and the entirety of Soulwax.

Soulwax was GREAT - was my first time seeing them and I am so much more a fan of theirs now. I thought Goose was pretty good too. I thought the Soulwax show started off good, got a little slow and sloppy in the middle but then really got going for the last half. The crowd was really into it especially from the E talking song on til the end.

What was that song that was basically a medley of all the old school techno songs? With the Prodigy and Altern8 and like 10 other old school jams. That shit was the highlight for me.

Definitely a really good show. Maybe they will be at Chella this year, since it sounded like they were working on new material.

Yea, I was really really pleasantly surprised. I don't know why I had any doubts?

I've never seen them perform as 2manydjs either, and now I'm tempted to go to that awful radio show event on Monday. :/

That sounds about right, Al. I was surprised how similar it felt to some of the radio soulwax broadcasts I've listened to. Not the same tracks of course but just the mood of it. Loved it. I'm going to be trying to find old sets now to listen to and "chair dance" all day.

I only saw the first 45 mins of the Soulwax set. Like Al said..started out good, but the middle part was pretty bad. The transitions were poor and that 10 minute long song with the vocoder was just crap. Is that a new jam? Whatever, it sucked balls. Good to hear it got better once we took off for SBTRKT (which was pretty good, not great).

I will say that for the payoff for their ridiculously long set up (wtf!?) was that they sounded fantastic. The Indy always sounds good, but it was dialed in especially well last night.

I will say that for the payoff for their ridiculously long set up (wtf!?) was that they sounded fantastic.

They have a pretty complicated setup, a combo of modern technology (Ableton running the whole show, more or less) and old finicky equipment (Old analog keyboards, I saw a Roland Space Echo up there too) and they couldn't really leave a lot of it set up 'cause of Goose's gear.

Thursday was great all around. Before GOOSE came on I was standing to the left of stage and ran into Steve Slingeneyer (Soulwax drummer), whom id met before in LA a few years ago, and talked for a bit about the show. He said they hadn't played together in some 8 months so they may be a bit rusty, that the set would be 55min with 4 new songs, and that he wasn't djing as much as he used to.

GOOSE - great to finally hear them live. I've been a fan of theirs since i first heard the BB remix of "Black Gloves" and their live should was pretty impressive.

Soulwax - The intimacy of the Independent was perfect. Agree that there were some messy transitions but all-together the 55min was pure energy and being dead center 2 deep was an amazing time.

The Hiero/Del show/party at Public Works on Thursday night was great. Casual, Souls and Del all performed separate sets which was cool and interesting. Pep Love was there as hype man for Casual's set and Z-Man and Jern Eye came out for a song with Opio and/or Phesto D. Even though all of Hiero and Ive seen them live several times I felt they all gave me a fresh and new show. Casual performed lots of new stuff, A-Plus did some solo stuff from his Pepper spray project and even Phesto D performed a new solo song. If you're any kind of fan of Hiero, you'll know that Phesto is the only member of the collective who has not done any outside or solo projects away from Souls of Mischief. Del had a live band and brought a great energy. Fun and great night, but Public Works is prob better suited for just DJ parties. Sound quality was sub-par most of the night.

I also went out to Milk on Saturday for Lyrics Born's first DJ set along with one of my favs, Party Ben. LB was pretty good. He played a lot of his own stuff which I thought was interesting. I'd have liked to hear a little more diversity.

The Verdi Club looks like it's near some good places to eat in the Mission, but that the venue itself is a big hall perhaps more designed for weddings. Anyone been there before?

For anyone wondering how the subsonic halloween ball was this year, it was pretty great. I really like the regency venue for what it was, it had an interesting layout, there was tons of space to get a good view and have dancing room, and the chill room downstairs was nice to check out. The crowd was awesome, very absorbed in the music and not douchey. The biggest issue I had were the acoustics, the sound was pretty mushy and not clear. Classixx and Bag Raiders were both great, I hadn't seen or listened to them before and I was impressed by both.

I'd seen Fake Blood last halloween at hard and last march up here, and overall his set was very similar to what I'd seen before, which wasn't surprising. Regardless it was still awesome. He really knows how to pace the music and he managed to make the acoustics sound better somehow (probably because he uses purer tones and is, overall, a badass musically). Good DJs make you feel like you're on drugs even when you're completely sober.

I've only seen 2manyDjs once before at hard 2 years ago and it was extremely disappointing that the first 40 minutes of their set were all songs I'd seen them play 2 years ago, and were namely all old as fuck and overplayed. They also were really bad at watching the levels and, combined with the bad acoustics, this made for a really terrible sound. The parts that needed to be loud weren't, they kept cutting back just when the they needed the bass to get thumpy, and then they'd turn up the treble into this painful mess and I had to cover my ears several times when notes actually hurt to listen to. That would have been ok if they had interesting mixing but I've seen frat DJs do better. The last half hour was a bit better but not by much and by that point I was pretty tired anyways. Not that their set wasn't fun, but it was hard not to be critical and after that performance I'm not sure I really give 2 shits about them anymore.

Overall the atmosphere really made the night though, good job Live105. Next time get better speakers though.

Nice write up Seitron.

Its always refreshing to hear honest critiques of shows and not the same "That was the best show I've ever seen, you all missed the best time on earth" comments.

Bummer that they didn't play a tighter set. Nowadays with these cd mixers and everything being on computer, you would think that mixing levels and shit like that would be pretty easy.

I did enjoy the Soulwax show on Thursday, but they were definitely rusty at times during that show as well.

So that Carl Craig show on Friday is at some undisclosed place in Oakland and tickets are $40 to $50. So it looks like I'm out on that. Too pricey and too far.

I'm thinking of going to the Kraak and Smaak show at the Mighty on Friday instead. They are doing a dj set. Anyone know if these guys are any good doing a dj set? The youtube on their website from them at DEMF seems like they can get the crowd going.

I've seen Kraak and Smaak DJ twice and have mixed feelings about them. In '08, they opened for Mr. Scruff at Mighty and were great (both smooth and funky), but then I saw them a few years later at Ghost Ship and they were terrible, like train-wreck bad.

Green Day, Kut U Up and Ty Segall tonight just announced if you got nothing to do:

"Green Day live at the Mezzanine in San Francisco with Kut U Up and Ty Segall benigit for Surfrider Foundation. NOW!"

Also, Adrienne:

"Hey bay area!! Green Day is playing at mezzanine in SF tonight w/kut u up &Ty segall for surf rider foundation.. Going on around 11pm.. Race you there!!"

They've been playing lots of new songs and covers like the misfits and other rarities.

I still can't believe The Field played an 18 minute version of my favorite song, Over the Ice. I got it on video...hopefully I can put it on Youtube.

I had a chance encounter with the main guy in the band and asked about Coachella, he said they would love to do it and have their visa's ready now (i guess that was an issue before lol) but they have not gotten an invite and he seemed doubtful they will ever get one again.

Mindless Self Indulgence - March 30th @ The Regency

If the crowd for these idiots weren't so fucking tweeny gothy, and it weren't at the regency, I actually would consider going to this.

This post should be cross referenced in the confessions section.

I caught their set in the mohave tent in 2004 and I've been a casual fan of them since. I actually saw them perform about about 3-4 years ago at Slim's, but only because it was so small. The row of parents lined up down 11th st after the show was especially amusing.

I don't like gabber, metal, screaming vocals, or white ironic rappers (for the most part) but for some reason I love MSI. It doesn't make sense. The last time I saw them (2005) I was the only person there not wearing full black and I got crowdsurfed on by someone wearing combat boots. Can't wait to go back 8)

I've also had a good time at a MSI show. It was in 2005 at the SOMA Sidestage in San Diego. The venue doesn't serve alcohol, so we pre-partied at the nearby Black Angus. I met a girl there that I ended up dating for like 6 months.

Agreed. May and Saunderson are the real deal. Not disparaging Koze, but.. doesn't hold a candle to the Detroit legends.

Well, on the Koze event facebook page, they've said Koze is playing "the majority of the night" and that the event will go until at least 4, possibly until 6. Is it a fair guess that he would probably go on around 1 and play till around 4?

Saunderson/May was billed as a 3+ hour set, so I am betting they are on around midnight, so I'm thinking I will head to PW just before midnight, and then hopefully head over to Beatbox for the last hour or two of DJ Koze's set.

God, I'm going to need a lot of red bull.

Mmmm, wouldn't go that far. Koze is apt to play some seriously weird, leftfield stuff. And make it work. Furthermore, though he may not come stateside all that often, he's not exactly a jonny-come-lately.

Koze is doing a 4 hour set. Don't be surprised if it ends up being a 4 hour + more set. That's why they are saying it may be going til 6 am.

Ty Segall was fuckin brilliant at Brick & Mortar last night! No band, just him, guitar, high hat, kick drum with a tambourine taped to the front.
Wtf? Tell me you got some video of that...wow.

This evening at GAMH, I saw Sister Crayon > Grimes > Austra. Twas a very good show.

Sister Crayon are getting better and better. Grimes' show was a lil raw, but genuine. I've got a major crush on her. Austra was also very enjoyable.

During a set break, I hung out with the members of Sister Crayon and soon they'll be heading into the studio to record a new LP. I also mentioned HandBanana's association with them and they were very excited. Also, they're totally stoked about opening for Tycho's upcoming December show in LA.

Grimes is hot and she sings with a breathy passion and an underlying sadness, which is very reminiscent of how Marilyn Monroe spoke.

Saunderson & May were absolutely killing it tonight - I should have just stayed through the end and skipped DJ Koze (who was okay but not in the same league as those two). Fun night all around though. :)

It seems like they are targeting other late night venues with that same resolution. Isn't there currently street parking in the immediate vicinity of Mezzanine?

ESTABLISH – TOW-AWAY, NO STOPPING EXCEPT MARKED POLICE VEHICLES
6th Street, west side, from Jessie Street, 21 feet to 44 feet southerly (23-foot zone)
Jessie Street, south side, from 6th Street to 131 feet westerly
Jessie Street, south side, from 6th Street, 143 feet to 162 feet westerly (19-foot zone)

Some of the other resolutions seemed to be by clubs as well.

Edited to clarify: it's not a ton of spots but the only tow-away zone changes I see in these things are by venues.

Yeah, Koze seems underwhelming to me. May and Saunderson throw it down for real (did I say that already?). Figures I would get sick on the one weekend in months that inspires me to get myself into SF. Where was the Koze gig?

It was at Beatbox (formerly Fat City and formerly Studio Z). It just re-opened a couple of months ago under new ownership. This is the 2nd show I've seen there since it became Beatbox, and I like it a lot. The sound is great (I can't remember the name of the company who put together their sound system but my understanding is that they specialized in doing sound for those "super churches" with thousands of attendees and huge choirs). The sound feels ENORMOUS for the room but is clear. The space is comfortable, bartenders and staff are friendly. It's a gay club aside from special events nights, and the crowd has still been mostly gay and mostly male for the shows I've gone to.

When I was there for Tiger & Woods, I felt like it was pretty packed, but Cara & Sebastian said that last night (even when there was a long line outside), it wasn't too crowded. Sounds like they might be doing some population control even when there's a line for door sales, so I'd definitely suggest presale tickets for this place.

Looking forward to more shows there. :)

(On a side note, I mentioned before that I used to know one of the new owners socially - it's the son of the guy who owns Mr. S (the fetish store). Really cool guy, who knows how to throw great, chill parties, and who has great taste in music. I think this venue is going to be really promising).

Koze was great. Perfect space for a 4 hour set. We tried to hang at the afta-afta party at 222 Hyde, where he was going to show up and play another set after taking a nap, but couldn't rally like the rest of those marathon partiers. It was really weird going to 222 Hyde at 6 in the morning.

Also that is terrible about the car parking around Mighty. And it seems so blatantly discriminatory to the late night club business.

UPDATE: SUCCESS

"NO PARKING / TOW-AWAY" - DEFEATED!

We just received word that this has been pulled from the November 6th Agenda and that SFPD will look to alternative measures to approach their issue. We will continue to work with the SFPD to better learn what their concerns are and help in anyway to provide an amicable solution for everyone.

We also would like to acknowledge Jocelyn Kane at the Entertainment Commision and Supervisor Malia Cohen and her office for their support as well as the officials at the SFMTA and Mission Station for listening.

Most importantly, we owe a huge debt of gratitude to our patrons and fans, dj's and promoters, businesses and neighbors who quickly mobilized and rallied for our campaign.

Thank you!!

The Mighty Family!

Hells yeah. Good job everybody.

I wonder if SFPD is doing this in part because of the police action I witnessed at Mighty a couple of months ago. That evenig, there were 5-6 squad cars and k-9 unit(s) hanging around the intersection of Utah and 15th.

fikus222

It appeared they were midway through some action.

All of my experiences parking at Mighty are benign, except for the time a guy parked with his car's bumper resting against mine on the hilly potion of 15th.

zimmy1222
11-15-2011, 02:09 PM
drove and parked there plenty and never had an issue with the neighborhood, ... Its definitely prime for suspicious activity though..

They wouldn't restrict parking because they think the cars are vulnerable to theft would they? I mean, they can't care that much. (probably more like, it's by a club, people will drive, not pay attention to parking signs; shootin fish in a barrel)

chiapet

It has nothing to do with theft. Theft seems less likely on those particular blocks than it would be even a couple of blocks away where there are not night-time businesses/venues and there would be less potential witnesses.

It really only targeted the available parking specifically adjacent to Mighty and Mezzanine. It seems like it's just a constant battle against late night venues. Since they do not give any reason for the proposal, it's hard to guess what the rationale was.

Ty Segall / White Fence / Mikal Cronin / The Feeling of Love - Friday, March 2 @ GAMH

Even though I've seen Ty Segall like a bajillion times already this year, I may have to hit this one. It's on a Friday, in a great room and it's been about 3 mos since the last time. It's going to be a sweaty, painful night with that lineup.
