So what of note is going on in the Bay area on may 27-31? I know there is the Edward Sharp show but that is sold out. I am going on a college tour with my dad and would love to stop by some shows. Also if anyone has any knowledge of musicals or plays that may be going on in this timeframe, that would be appreciated as well. Thanks.

WHAT?! Upsetting.

Also, NPR has given Pantha du Prince some publicity with the recent album, so I'd hope more people know who he is now rather than 4 years ago (me being one of them).

hey guedita, the sasquatch lineup has nothing on Coachella this year.

I'm looking forward to experiencing something completely different at Sasquatch: crowd, location, a seriously solid lineup with some of my favorite indie rock bands and a few great electronic acts. I think this is going to be a big year for Sasquatch.

PS rasooli, you should listen to Booka Shade. And you spelled Digitalism wrong in your sig.

i'm normally in that camp, but the sound at main last year was simply superb. who knows, maybe they'll have it figured out.

(as long as they don't drop in some new/unexpected gear at the last-minute unlike what Radiohead did at OSL....allegedly)

chiapet
05-17-2010, 01:11 PM
The Sasquatch lineup is AMAZING for the type of festival that Sasquatch is. It's 1/3 or less of the size of Coachella (in terms of tickets sold). They did very well this year.

Is that what happened to Radiohead after they repeatedly blamed the company running sound for OSL? I'd be a little surprised, since Tom Petty's set also had some issues. Had heard that the attempt to do everything 'green' meant some power fluctuation/supply issues. Any truth to that?

GeezrRckr
05-17-2010, 01:32 PM
that's what i was told by a SVP of APE at the Underworld show and in this em exchange with someone at Meyer Sound:

The technical difficulties that came up during the Radiohead show on Friday night were related to a power failure affecting the FOH mix position. The sound reinforcement system provided by Meyer Sound and UltraSound/ProMedia was functioning properly throughout the evening.

you're right, though....it doesn't explain the outage with TP, which i think is a result of not having adequate power generation that year.

chiapet
05-17-2010, 01:50 PM
Thanks.. I couldn't remember the name of the company, just remember reading that it was a big event for them and they were really disappointed by the problems, expecting people were blaming them.

And yes, I'd heard from a few sources that there was a power generation problem the first year, which they fixed (I don't recall anything like that happening in '09?).

Man, that RH show will stand out in my mind forever probably, not for being a great show but for the multiple "WTF" moments as everyone looked around thinking ... surely the sound will come back on in an instant...

I don't really know yet since this will be my first year (tickets were around $350, lodging = free camping, airfare was astronomically expensive).
People are telling us that it may sell out in advance, I guess some years you can get tickets upon arriving. Prince is a pretty big add though. :)

If you buy Band of Horses' mediocre new album at Amoeba you get a wristband for VIP section as well as a signed poster at the Amoeba show. I thought that was worth driving over there for yesterday. It's only for the first 300 people, but I doubt 300 people have bought the album already.

Good alternative to their show at the Indy that night is Voxtrot's last SF show...

Quick Question Re: The Warfield. How hard is it to find parking? Am I better off just taking BART in?

You're better off taking BART, it's a block away and shows almost never go past 12. I did have to miss the end of Underworld though once.

Anyone know if they are actually close to selling out or is the Mezzanine just scrambling to sell tickets for the show.

well, AC was the first band to sell out the Fox upon it being re-opened. then, there is the other APE tie with AC being asked to "open" for Further at OSL.

so, maybe that's just it...the tie to APE. (and maybe a dislike to LN/Clear Channel)

Assuming they aren't burning through all this cash they are making from nonstop touring, then they are playing it pretty smart. Tour like crazy behind a hot/hyped album then eventually take a break for a couple years and work on a hopefully decent follow up.

Are they still touring with the same set list they had while on tour with Friendly Fires last year? Or do they have a few new songs/covers (not including their B-sides) in their live shows?

I like The XX, but I think a show at the Fox Oakland is a bit much.

It's a weird venue. We saw Ben Folds with Rufus Wainwright there a few years back, and while it was a good show, it's a weird venue and a weird crowd. Not bad, by any means...just different. It's probably similar to the crowd that shows up to see Hollywood Bowl orchestra playing classical hits. There's some normal fans there, as well, of course, but for the most part, it seems like people who are there to have a nice evening out.

They've done quite a bit of work on the actual venue part of the winery.

http://s3.amazonaws.com/bk_store/images/photo_object/photos/4/9/4969594/photo-feed.jpg

Also, Dorkfish's review was spot on. Went there for Wilco last year as well and there were lots of "polite clappers" in the audience. The venue sells "season tickets" for their summer concert season, so there is usually a portion of the crowd who are there as a casual fans. Drinking wine on the Wine Deck overlooking the Silicon Valley is always a good way to start the night.

^I'll be going to that and Zorn's COBRA.

Patton with Trevor and possibly Trey? Hell yes.

Also, I have never seen a show here before. I may be going solo to one, do they serve dinner at the table? I kind of want to reserve a front row now, but don't want it to be awkward or unnecessary (if it is normally easy to get a solid spot).

Patton's my favorite, I need to be upfront :)

uh oh, Black Star drama (http://consequenceofsound.net/2010/06/24/black-star-deny-bay-area-show-despite-promoters-confirmation/)?

While there was a collective sigh of disappointment when Black Star was not included on the recently announced Outside Lands lineup, some good news does look to be coming for Bay Area hip-hop fans. According to listings found on the Fox Theater in Oakland’s website, promoter Another Planet Entertainment’s website, and Ticketmaster, the Talib Kweli and Mos Def-featuring hip-hop group is booked for the Fox on July 31st, with veteran hip-hop group Zion-I opening.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to fly with Kweli. Yesterday, the Twitter account RealTalibKweli posted, “Uh, no I don’t know abt this..” in response to inquiries about the show. Later that day, the same account posted “Promoters getting reckless. I will not be hosting anything at Conga Room LA Friday and there’s no Black Star show in Oakland July 31s” and “No black star show in Hawaii either. Hey promoters I’m in Black Star. You have to ask me first. And I have to say yes.”

Promoter Another Planer Entertainment was contacted by CoS and two representatives confirmed the shows, with one saying that “he (Kweli) signed a contract and tickets go on sale Sunday.” They were unaware of this Twittering and seemed confident that the show is happening, so take it for what it is. Regardless, we’ll have more updates on the situation as they’re revealed.

Why are the writers at CoS so god damned inept? "The Talib-Kweli and Mos Def-featuring hip hop group" makes NO SENSE.

has anyone heard anything about the supposed Stanton Warriors show at Mission Rock this Saturday? The SW website still has them here that day, but the MR site not only does not, but they won't respond to em and their inbox is full.

Mission Rock isn't organizing the show, so perhaps that's why it's not on their site.
