Talent booking alone should disqualify Fillmore.

chiapet
07-01-2011, 10:00 AM
Seems like a very biased list - all of those venues are decidedly more focused on indie/rock, no EDM at all.

Did I mention that I am eating my fucking words about Mighty? Maybe I'd only just been there on really crowded / douchey crowd nights. Loved it last week.

BlackSwan
07-01-2011, 10:04 AM
I hope that isn't in order. The sound at the Rickshaw Stop is shit.

GeezrRckr
07-01-2011, 10:06 AM
Mighty it fun. Don't know why the party bus(es) haven't been there the past couple/few times I've been. Those are such a bonus.

And, yes, Brad...I agree, the Fillmore bookings are very, very inconsistent. Plus, it being a Clear Channel property really is an unfair knock against such a grand room.

EDIT: Matt, I disagree. When were you there last? They upgraded their PA last year and it's pretty fucking crystal these days. Now, BOTH on the other hand...they really need an upgrade, imo.

BlackSwan
07-01-2011, 10:13 AM
Ah, it was a couple years ago, but they couldn't have changed the acoustics of the room. That still has to suck.

GeezrRckr
07-01-2011, 10:18 AM
You're talking to a guy who avoids Slim's because of bad sound. The Rickshaw is one of my favorite rooms...on all fronts.

BlackSwan

Well then, nevermind.

Trick Loves The Kids
07-01-2011, 10:27 AM
Bottom of the Hill is literally the worst venue I've ever been to and that list is bogus

chiapet
07-01-2011, 10:27 AM
Hrm.. when did they upgrade last year, Drew? (like.. approximately?) I saw a couple of shows there in the first few months of 2010 and one in December... I don't remember sound being GREAT for the December show but now that you've mentioned it, I think it might have better than what I've been used to from that venue.

GeezrRckr
07-01-2011, 10:32 AM
I don't know, actually. I do know that the upgrade was a big part of the consideration for Popscene moving there.

Whatever...we debate about lists much too much on here. Silly.

chiapet
07-01-2011, 10:33 AM
Wasn't trying to debate. :) I'm genuinely interested because I kind of avoid that place based on past shows. When I was there in December, I didn't really have all my senses properly tuned in on the set....

More on topic/speaking of: Has anyone ever gone to non-stop bhangra at Rickshaw? That's always interested me but I kind of imagine how miserable the crowd for such a thing could be (myself included in that statement, actually).

GeezrRckr
07-01-2011, 10:38 AM
I'd be up for checking that out (also have always wanted to)...although now that Cheb I Sebbah isn't going to be there for the near future, I'm less inclined. It's always on Sundays, no?

chiapet
07-01-2011, 10:41 AM
3rd Saturday of each month. All these club nights on Saturdays seem to be tough to get to (shaker and I have been trying to go to Leisure for months). I'm up for trying it sometime. I'm not sure how well the fusion of all those genres will work for me, but I love bhangra. :)

anyone in for Ty Segall at the Independent tomorrow night (Sat. 7/2)? it would be fun to meet some of you. looks like you have it on your list Chia, I will look for you and say hi (memory is fairly vague since our one encounter, but I think I can find you or vice versa if you remember me). I waited until last night to get tix because I wasn't sure on my holiday weekend plans, but it worked out and they were still available. $8 is almost a joke for a show there. Pretty psyched about seeing how he commands that room. I think the show is going to go-off!!! Anyone know much about the openers? Audacity, No Boss, Peter Grimm...

GeezrRckr
07-01-2011, 12:38 PM
I will be there, for sure...man-crush on Ty.

Say hello.

chiapet
07-01-2011, 12:40 PM
Yea, I only just bought a ticket this morning - finally listened to the new album a few times this week and really liked it. Not familiar with any of the openers at all. Geez pointed out to me yesterday that the Indy allows in/outs, so I may go see what I think and duck out for a bit if I'm not feeling the opening acts.

I don't remember what you look like... I'm red hair and purple glasses.

Hey Chia & Geezr, sorry we didn't find each other at Ty last weekend. My wife and I got there in time to catch No Boss ("done!"), then we just went outside for awhile. Came back and it was pretty packed. I looked around, but only moved halfway across the floor. I liked him a lot. He's touring with a band, so the songs sound a bit different than they do on album, a little more upbeat and more pop-y. There was a lot of sax being employed which I enjoyed more than others I think... :) His music came across WAY more 80's to me live, than even it had recorded.

7/22 - Dj Qu @ TBA (underground)

8/12 - Theo Parrish @ Public Works

I previously muffed the Theo Parrish date, but I'm fairly certain this is correct given the many flyers at last weekend's No Way Back w/ Joakim and the creation of an event page on RA - take it as less than ironclad pending an announcement from PW. I may be jumping the gun just a tad but I figure some people will appreciate this info earlier rather than later on account of Outside Lands afterparty planning.

This is the realest of talk. Boris @ the Regency is a pointless show, you need a venue with high sound quality to enjoy them. I made the mistake of seeing Sleep there last year and their shitty system couldn't handle it.

Yeah, fuck that noise. I would have went for $20 or less tickets because it would be a fun way to spend the day eating bbq and watching some nostalgic bands, but 50 to 60 is crazy.

Its put on by 107.7, so you would think there would be cheap tickets. Plus the food is separate, but its a bbq festival as well. Seems like a big fuck job.

Can be a bit of a fool's errand. I would think about it less in terms of DJ's and more in terms of parties. No Way Back (2nd saturdays) and Bionic (every sunday) are consistently solid. Loveletters was discontinued - it seems Nice n Slo (first thursdays) has taken its place. Nightlight (second fridays?) is also worthwhile. All of these are run by local DJ's - Conor, Solar, Nikola Baytala, Sammy D, Clint Stewart etc. Each of these nights will occasionally feature an out-of-town guest, but are mostly heavy on the local talent - which is wonderful imo.

Yeah, SG were really good last night. On a venue note, I found the Civic to be a really different place now that it's run by APE. All of the staff were very professional and friendly and they put a bar in the back of the floor now (don't recall there ever being one before). The best part is that it appears they have put money into the sound system. Hey WGJ or Down Rodeo, are either of you guys going to either of the 2 days for Power of the Riff when it comes to SF? Its the 8/15 and 16. I'm pretty sure I'm doing both nights, haven't been to elbow room yet. Check the metal thread.

I'm not sure. I'm only familiar with a few of the bands. Is it really at Elbo Room? That place is tiny from what I remember.

HARD was moved from The Fox to Mezzanine, fyi. That's not a good sign, is it?

Depends on what you think of as being a good sign? Probably not selling well.

However, it would make me more interested, since Mezz means no more all-ages show that ends at midnight. (Already have plans that night though).

No, you can't. I was just looking into it and it looks like the tickets are dirt cheap.

You can go all four nights for $19.81 in celebration of their 30th anniversary and of course only if you are a fan club member. Damnit!

I was going to post this in the East Bay shows thread but it's sort of a waste-land: http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?273015

I have no idea what this event will be like, but it's near my new apt in Oakland, near the Lake Merritt BART station, cheap, and from 2pm - 11 pm on Sunday. I've yet to see much in terms of electronic shows on this side of the bay and am in a house music funk, so I'm definitely interested in checking it out. I love that it says "Will need cash to eat" on the flier.

Intereting, too bad it isn't an after-party Saturday night. Speaking of which, is there anything worth while Saturday evening, say, following APC at the Greek Theatre?

My friends are going to ICEE HOT at Public Works: MK, Todd Edwards, Ghosts on Tape. Might not be your and Erika's bag though. I've had fun at their party before, and Todd Edwards is pretty enjoyable (UK Garage)

I met one of the members from Twin Sister at the Gang Gang Dance show in Chicago (Dev - the keyboardist on the right in the pic) and we ended up checking out a few P4k Fest sets together. Really nice guy. I also caught their set at Schuba's while there. They're really quite good (they kind of remind me of a combination of Gang Gang Dance and Cocteau Twins with a bit more emphasis on the 80's pop) and are playing the Rickshaw on 9/4.

I know it's a bit far off, but I encourage you to check them out if you're free that night.

And, after listening to them again, I forgot that I heard a bit of Blonde Redhead in them too.

Heh, anyone know if there are no service charges on tickets at the Greek box office? I can't remember. May try to stock up on some tickets if that's the case.

No service charges, can pay with cash or card. Just picked up our Portishead tix there last night. $55 flat.

My Mac went out on me last week, but I was able to purchase an Amon Tobin ticket on my live nation iPhone app. Kinda scary how easy it was to complete a purchase through the app. I believe I got a floor ticket too. I better be able to meet some more of you guys that night!

Am also way more interested in Digitalism at Mezzanine, but I'd buy a ticket at the door. Anyone think this may sell out with the venue change or do we think the 21+ will make it an empty mezzanine?

They were alright. We were going for Rebelution (I was at UCSB when they started), but they were done by 8:30 and we missed them completely.

Lots of bros. And moshing... couldn't really figure that one out.

If you are are thinking of buying tix to a future show at the Mezz box office, they don't (yet) allow that. Bummer, I know.

However, if it's an APE-promoted show, they will usually sell tix to those at the Indy box office. But, they seem to be doing less cross-promoted shows this year.

Is there any inclination that the Bon Iver show at the Greek will sell out soon? I'm strapped for ticket-buying funds for the month of August so I'm hoping I can wait til September to buy a pair...but will bite the bullet if necessary.

Why? You know there's going to be a number of excellent other events going on that night at clubs in the city that won't get roaring til midnight or later. A handful of the artists booked for HHM are likely coming through SF.
