Why do you think this will be bigger than SOD? This looks like a much smaller scale party than SOD re: attendance, production, etc.

how many people attended SOD this year? I was told the massive last year got round 4,000 people and will be bigger this year. Plus SOD didnt have the large scale art that this will have

chiapet

Sea of dreams was bigger than 4000 people.. the venue holds like 10,000 (without the art installations of course).

sbessiso
06-17-2011, 03:15 PM
was there really that many people there??

chiapet
06-17-2011, 03:35 PM
I don't know how many people attended, but the venue is pretty big. Not sure what the capacity looks like considering the space they take up for vendors/booths and art installations.

She's lip synching, and not dancing. You're paying to see a Britney pay tribute to herself. And that show at SJ Civic is all ages, and done by Vital, it'll be the worst shit ever.

I have to wonder what is going on tonight downtown that one of my friends was 'checked in' at Arcade Adult Superstore with Rich Korach, heh. Especially since he's playing a show in Detroit today.

Shpongle last night was a lot of fun... I can tell that it would have been a lot more fun under psychedelic influences.

Last night was a little weird: I ran into a bunch of casual acquaintances at Shpongle. Some guy there told me he "recognized me from 'As You Like It''s Facebook page" (and within a minute or two realized that he knows a bunch of my friends), and weirdest of all was someone who recognized me from a DEMF after party.

Had every intention of going to the Saunderson thing, even made my way over there. I couldn't remember what intersection PW is actually at so I was heading in the direction of ZG, planning to walk past. As I was just getting to that area, it was just before 2, and I ran into some friends who were fleeing last call and never made it to PW. :/

Wow, Shpongle is actually going to perform live? That might actually be worth checking out, especially for Halloween.

That's what it said! He flashed that on his video setup at least half a dozen times through the show. My sib may be in SF for Halloween, and this sounds really promising for something we both would enjoy.

I'm sorry. I did not ask.
I'm also not definitely sure about the band thing. I don't want to get everyone prematurely excited if it doesn't happen. It was just something one of the guys that works with them said they're trying to do.

Spookfest won't be held at the Cow Palace again though, right?

it could end up being for Spookfest, but somehow i imagine it will be something just for Shpongle. If it is Spookfest it will not be at Cow Palace, almost immediately after last years i rememeber hearing that that was it. Thats what they get for making it all ages and taking peoples water bottle caps.

its true... its being promoted as (Live) as the pictures prove the news.

It should be on Treasure Island.

The water bottle cap thing... that aggravates me so much. I've actually started trying to remember to carry some caps in my bag. What has the world come to?

Treasure Island is still technically SF, not Oakland, though. I can't imagine where they'd be except the Fox. Which would be stinky, I don't want a Shpongle show on Halloween that ends at 11:30.

Bud Luster

Maybe they will do a two-night deal like last year and have Shpongle at Oracle. Actually I wouldn't be surprised if the whole deal got moved to Oracle (or Bill Graham).

Pendulum (Dj Set)- 8/5, SJ Civic

The show was great, they put a lot of money into the production and she actually sang/moved around a lot of the time!!! haha

I do think the setlist was a bit short though, she has way too many songs people want to hear for such a short setlist. Plus two of the songs were on the deluxe edition of the new album.

O well I guess I just have to see her again -__- lol

GeezrRckr
06-20-2011, 04:33 PM
I'm guessing he'll come on around midnight...as is usual. I get back from Seattle around 6:30ish and would be up for something beforehand (dinner/drinks). What time do you think you'd be done with your sis-in-law Matt? Perhaps I could host a meetup...it's been a while. And, I have to send my regrets for tomorrow...it's highly unlikely that I'll be able to make it out.

We should go to Thee Parkside for drinks before High Contrast -- if hosting a pre-show gathering is too rushed for you, Drew.

GeezrRckr
06-20-2011, 04:44 PM
Nah...it shouldn't be. I've got plenty of bourbon/vodka/rum/green so that should be fine. Beer is a quick trip to Pearl Market (should that be a preference). You guys will have to do without the mutt though...she'll be at Camp Gerry till Friday. If we meet at my place, we can share the cab...one other benefit.

Or, we can all meet at the bar....tis no biggie either way.

Okay, I am going to task Chia as the pre-party conduit for Thurs. Should anything change on my trip back from Seattle, she will let you all know. fikus222

I'm not aware of anything better for the bay area, but maybe someone else will have some ideas. Mostly I think a lot of us just subscribe to email lists for our favorite venues and promoters, and check this thread a lot... :)

Yeah I dont think she's going to be at the Shoreline show. On the Rock the Bells site if you click on their tickets section it gives a break down of which artists will be performing in each city. If you look close you'll notice Erykah is not listed in San Francisco and Common is not listen for the NY show.

I read a post on the RTB facebook wall a few weeks ago saying something about Erykah being booked at another show on the same date as the "SF" Rock the Bells, but now I can find no evidence of that other show. That break down on the RTB page has been the most up to date and accurate listing by city in the past so that's what Im going with.

Hi from Seattle...looks like I'll be getting home on time so the pre-party at my place is still on. Please feel free to stop by anytime from 9:30 on. I don't have much beer, so if that's your preference, bring a few for yourself. Also, bring whatever mixers you want for the booze...which I should have enough of (vodka for sure).

And, if someone could please try to find out set times, that would be great (I nominate Fikus...he's a skilled pesterer). Doors are 9 so we should have a good 90 minutes or so to hang out before heading over. See you fools soon.

Erika and I were pleasantly surprised by how good Peter Murphy was at Amoeba this evening. He played for an hour and fifteen minutes, changed his wardrobe several times and came out for 2 encores. The setlist consisted of his newer material, which was good, Bauhaus songs and David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust...good stuff.

Now, on to Act II, which includes pre-partying at Drew's and DnB at Mighty with High Contrast.

Erika found herself enjoying the show a lot more than she though she would. Since I'd only seen Bauhaus once (opening for NIN), I was glad to have the opportunity to see PM again and he didn't disappoint. Though, his theatrics were a little over the top, they were still amusing and in character.

Back2Basics presents Work It featuring a truly all-star lineup…

DOC MARTIN (Sublevel, LA)
GARTH (Wicked, Grayhound)
NIKOLA BAYTALA (Kontrol/SWAT)
GALEN (Sunset, Pacificsound)
BO (DeepBlue)
ROUZBEH (Back2Basics)

Get ready to work it at “The Works” on Friday, July 22. This is going to be an old school jam in the truest sense. The Bay Area underground house scene is need of waking up, and this lineup is sure to do it. Some of SF’s finest old school DJs unite on a Funktion-One soundsystem. It's the first I'm hearing about it - a friend who knows I like Ride had sent me the link a little bit ago. I'm out of town for the Cults show, but am going to go tonight and might give Dirty Beaches a try for free. The rooms in the hotel where they're holding this look nice... but have got to be pretty small.

Edited: So they just confirmed the RSVP, it says limited capacity/arrive early and implies no sports clothes. I suppose I'll have to shower today after all. I've never been to those spaces, will be interested to see how it goes over.

for those Clift sessions shows, RSVP'ing does not guarantee entry. it simply gets you on a list, but it ultimately becomes a first-come, first-served scenario. the headliners don't go on until about 11-11:30 (if not later), so they want you to get there early and order up some $15 cocktails.

^ Too fucking right. I posted a couple tracks included in that mix in the mnml-tech forum. The Lucky Paul remix towards the end is pure class.

Glad you re-posted this. I mentioned it a while back in this thread but I did so waaaay too far in advance. July 8 is shaping up to be another EDM clusterfuck in SF - dirtybird @ mezz, lee burridge @ mighty, foss and co. @ PW. I really hope this show doesn't end up w/ the short end of the stick crowd-wise, as it promises the best music imo. And Foss was stuck w/ a pitiful crowd when he last came to town (supperclub) on his own (not as part of Hot Natured) - his opinion of sf was probably saved w/ a timely afterhours visit to the com# ;).

No idea what I'm doing that night... leaning towards starting at Mezzanine. I've only been to Public Works once so far and I did not enjoy the crowd. So that gives me pause.

Looks like tickets are on sale now for Guti at Mission Rock Cafe. What's the deal with 2nd Sundays? Are advance tickets a thing I need, in order to not have to show up really early?

Ross1492

I'm really surprised to hear that the crowd was not to your liking. I've had nothing but positive experiences at PW. Dirtybird and Burridge (was thinking of moving here) are in town on a regular basis ... Foss and Le Loup not so much.

chiapet
06-28-2011, 01:58 PM
Well, it was for the SCB show, it might have been specific to that night, but it was so many people on their phones and yelling over the music to their friends. Gonna give it another try this week for Metro Area, but I don't expect a disco set on a Thursday to compare to the crowd that goes to PW on a weekend. ;)

I have trouble intensely dancing when everyone around me is an annoying douchebag. :( Though I realized a few months ago I pretty much always dance with my eyes closed, I think it's largely due to not wanting to know what is going on around me.

Hopefully thursday night's show will win me over, and it's not like I wouldn't go back for something I want to see.

chiapet

My problem with people at shows in SF started before dubstep was a popular thing here, and isn't really limited to EDM shows. I fucking hate how people either stand around disinterestedly with an expression like someone is holding a piece of dogshit under their noses, or use the band/dj's performance time as an opportunity to catch their friends up, loudly, on their latest gossip.

Why can't people just shut up and dance?

Edit: And yea I know I sound like just as much of a dick as the people I'm describing. I probably am a dick. :P

Booo! speakeasy is fantastic! For $5 bucks, if I remember correctly, you get a glass to take home and three pints of beer in the glass of your choice. Bands playing, good food, and of course cheap beer...

On a sad note, I just found out that Cheb I Sabbah has stage 4 stomach cancer. I'm sure many of you have either caught him spin (either in town on on the Playa) or surely have heard his songs dropped on the dancefloor (whether you knew it or not...he's very popular with local DJs). I haven't noticed anything for July 4th, either. I *might* go to the Temple thing in the park on Sunday, but I can't imagine anyone who's not nearby wanting to go to that.

Fillmore Jazz Fest during the day on Saturday and Sunday.

Drew, it would be cool if you do a pre-party at your place prior on Friday night. Especially since I missed out on the last one.

Anyone know the set times for Hawtin? I would imagine hes not coming on until 12. But since there is only one other dj, could he come on earlier?

Hawtin event has 2 openers - Nikola Baytala and Portable Sunsets. I think its safe to say he won't come on before 12. My guess is a 3 hr set from 12-3.

Centipede is awesome. probably the greatest opening act around for any UG hip hop or ninja tune-ish main act

but yeah for $35 that's not much of a show on paper.
It'll still be a lot of great music though.

Do you know the set times? I've got a soccer game that ends at 9:30 but then I am jetting over there.

As far as I know, these are the set times. The bands are sharing a lot of gear, however, and we might start a bit earlier if possible so we can play another new jam.

9:30-10 Manatee

Been there 4 or 5 times...here's my assessment...

BEAUTIFUL setting - great views all around and generally mild weather. I'm not any sort of audiophile, but the sound is pretty darn good IMO. There's really not a bad seat in the place (I've sat all over) - but that said, if you can get close, it's pretty sweet.

Parking is a little expensive (15 or 20 from what I remember), but if you get there *slightly* late often the attendant is gone. Plus you get out a lot more easily because you're parked near the entrance. The road up to it is a winding 1 lane that gets backed up before/after the shows pretty badly.

Their wine is pretty bad, and the food/beer is overpriced, but they do have some decent beer selections from what I remember (haven't been this year).

Generally an older crowd that doesn't get too rowdy except for the hits (I would love to see someone blaze there but haven't yet). It's the kind of place where you wait until a song is over to leave your seat/come back to sit down.

They have a dinner package you can do with the show, but I haven't done that so can't comment. It's fun to get out there a little early, especially if you're making a weekend of it, and just walk around. It really is a spectacular setting. I've thoroughly enjoyed every time I've gone.

PM me or post if you have any other specific questions. Hope you guys make it and have a great time.

So what 7/11 are you guys gonna knock up for this mini holiday? Cuz..you're going to need lots of dough for it. That's where the rich folk see shows.

Although robbing liquor stores in its own right seems like a mini-holiday, I feel like on average i'm spending about $50 to see a show anywhere in the city. Specially for an act like Tears For Fears or Hall and Oats. The tickets are $45. I spent $60 to see Devo at the Fox as well as Chemical Bros there last year. I think for the setting and adventure it is worth it. Not to mention that I would be seeing music that strongly influenced my youth! Tears for Fears, I listened to on a loop in High school crying my eyes out! (oops, confessions thread)

How is Cut Chemist live?

Depends on what sort of set he does. He's a very skilled turntablist, and, sometimes his experimenting can be mind-blowing and other times it can get the better of him (like his last release). If the cheese of that poster is any indication, it doesn't bode well.

fikus222

Richie pre-party?

Tonight's escapade to Public Works was saved by good people, because the music was UTTER CRAP. I cannot remember the last time I heard worse DJing. LITERALLY the worst ever. Otherwise, the venue was cool.

chiapet
07-01-2011, 01:43 AM
Yea I'm not sure what was up with the DJ'ing tonight. I swear Metro Area was better than that at DEMF. There was ~20 minutes that was working pretty well for me but... yea. The only excuse I could make is that it was supposed to be a cheesy gay club night.

More disappointingly, Blonde Redhead was not really very good at all tonight. Played almost all newer stuff, slower songs, like 2 songs I'd consider "old" ones, all in all it was kind of bland and boring for me. This was my 18th time seeing them, and I think my last. :/

GeezrRckr
07-01-2011, 07:22 AM
^Yeah, it was a disappointment...esp in comparison to their totally awesome Warfield set last year. Uninspiring set list aside, I got the sense that they might be road-weary. Kazu seemed elsewhere last night. I wasn't sure if she was just tired or drunk. But, off for sure.

As for pre-Richie, I'd be happy to host again. Just let me know.

07-01-2011, 07:37 AM
I thought she was extremely reserved compared to every other time I've seen her. The point at the end where you wondered if she was drunk... that's how she normally is through the whole set (she's usually like a crazy little banshee). They just seemed to have no energy at all last night.

GeezrRckr
07-01-2011, 07:46 AM
It wasn't that...it was just her incoherence and staggering prior. I was just mentioning it right when she perked up. But, other than the drummer twin, the no energy was the impression I was left with (in addition to the lazy set list).

Ah okay, yes, she normally flails and staggers about the stage and makes little incoherent noises. So either that's just her thing or she's always wasted. :) There was ONE song that even a glimpse of the energy I expect.

After I left I remembered the last time I saw them actually was at the Independent, too, and I wasn't thrilled with that set either. It seems like they just don't deliver (to my expectations, anyway) anymore.

ANYWAY. TONIGHT. RICHIE.

I'm up for pre-gaming at your place, Drew, but hey I'm flexible if people have other ideas (and maybe your place isn't the most convenient for you to have folks if you wanted to hit 103 Harriet too). I think I'm going to try to get to Mezzanine around 11:15. I need some time to .... settle in to the night... before Richie.
