Drew... was not it not apparent from my post that I was agreeing? ie, normally I roll my eyes when people go on about lights/etc but that was amazing looking.
You're overthinking. Did you watch the vid? Yes? Good, that was the point.

Sometimes when Fikus poaches off others, he only does it halfway.

103 Harriet might be able to fit that setup on that staging platform in the back of the main room.

Does not compute. I mean, how dare I properly quote Trick and then expand upon his post with a video that I posted in the IDM thread yesterday.

This Wednesday at the Milk Bar in SF, Sister Crayon, which is a pretty sweet live trip hop band from Sacto that Erika and I discovered at the Sacramento Electronic Music Festival, is the secret guest for the SF stop of the Rumble Tour. It's a free show with White Arrows and Excuses for Skipping rounding out the bill. It should be a nice way to celebrate Erika completing her first year at Stanford.

Kontrol updated their calendar. All shows at The End-Up

July 2 - Steve Rachmad, Xhin
August 6 - Speedy J
September 3 - Kolective Turmtrasse (Live), Mike Dehnert

Very forward-thinking bookings for the most part. July and September look particularly tasty.

Hrmmm, Steve Rachmad. That's the same night as the alleged Metro Area show. Here is where I start dreaming up ill advised plans of double booking shows.

After Detroit last week, I am spoiled, these clubs should just give me a wristband once I've paid so I can go back and forth and see both sets. :P

Thanks for the heads up Ross1492. For the past several years, I've been very impressed with most everything coming out of Germany, so Kollektiv Turmstrasse looks like a lock for me.

Whoops :(. My posting of the Metro Area show was based on the schedule of the No Way Back head/resident DJ as posted on his facebook (has always been reliable in the past - up in the air shows are usually flagged w/ a "?"). No Way Back also announced Metro Area as an upcoming guest on their facebook page. Looking at it now, it appears the show has been rescheduled for 7/30. My sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused by my jumping the gun.

Hell, every weekend for the next 10 weeks is going to be a good weekend...

Eric, I have mixed feelings about 2nd Sundays. In theory, it's awesome. In reality, when it comes to getting across town on a Sunday afternoon and spending $15 to be at that venue... I flake almost every time.

Haha, been there. Quality control is relatively high at these events - only people with a bonafide interest in the music will be in attendance. It's not as though tweekers looking for a place to kick-it can just show up. The End-Up this isn't ;). The Compound was wonderful largely because it further thinned the heard - you had to be pretty damned committed to the music to make the trek.

Ugh. What a weird set of dates. A thursday Metro Area show should really be at 222 hyde (probably would be were it not for the draconian capacity max). I'm not sure if they have enough pull to fill PW on a weeknight.

As for when the show will start/finish, I think we're looking at 12ish-2ish. Those going to the Independent earlier in the night should be able to zip over to PW for a good chunk of the Metro Area set.

Not that anyone is likely to go, but Derrick Carter is playing at PW on July 1 (same night as Hawtin at Mezzanine). Comments from PW and DC himself on the facebook event page suggest he is playing a very long set, perhaps all night. Shame to miss that.

chiapet
06-07-2011, 12:31 PM
I saw that, and believe me, it's been on my mind. I wish I had a better sense of how late Richie's set would go. Right now the PW event claims to end at 3:30...

Ross1492
06-07-2011, 12:38 PM
Can't ever remember being at Mezzanine past 3-3:15ish (maybe Steve Bug a couple years ago). But, to be fair, I don't find myself there all that often. PW can and does go later (I left Soul Clap around 5) - so if the crowd/management is feeling it, a later close is certainly possible.

Also, I'm starting to think we may see a 3hrs+ set from Hawtin. Only 1 DJ in support (the wonderful Nikola Baytala thankfully) and no way he goes 9-1.

chiapet
06-07-2011, 12:49 PM

Ross1492
06-07-2011, 12:54 PM
My guess is 12-3. I gave some thought to the possibility of doing PW as a warm up (assuming DC starts early), but that doesn't quite make for a cohesive night of music. Nikola's set strikes me as a more appropriate appetizer. DC's funk as a comedown post-Hawtin? Much better, but logistically problematic.

Thats good to hear. Biggest crowd Ive experienced there was probably for Infected Mushroom, but Talib Kweli/David Banner, Redman+Method Man, nor Zion-I/Mighty Underdogs came close to selling out when I went to those shows. Early sellouts like this seem notable to me, especially hip hop artists.

I'm a little worried about what the crowd is going to be like for this show. The last time I saw DCFC at the Fillmore (2008), it was a near perfect show. So much so, that Erika left a fan and she didn't even like them at all before the concert. Oh well, at least we'll get free concert posters again.

chiapet
06-09-2011, 05:14 PM
Right, I wasn't going to PW before Shpongle. I'm hoping the show at the Fillmore is over at around midnight, and that PW doesn't get /that/ crowded by that time. If it's too crowded, I might go to Zeitgeist for a bit and hope they're letting people in later. But we'll see.

And yes, Robin, we should pre-game. Are we doing this out of the back of your car :) or at a bar? If you're into beer and wine, there is a very decent bar around the block from the Fillmore that Geezr pointed out last time I went to a show there.

DCFC were very good this evening. We always enjoy shows at the Fillmore. Will call went smoothly and we had a pretty sweet spot to watch the show from. DCFC played a 26 song show that lasted almost 2 hours. The free poster we got this evening is by far the worst poster I have ever received from the Fillmore. Anyway, the show was a lot of fun, it wasn't as good as last time at the Fillmore, but it was still quite good.

Sidenote: Every show we go to in the SF Bay we are reminded of how short everyone is here compared to Seattle. The average height here is seriously 4-6 inches shorter than in Seattle. Just an observation.

Setlist:

Bend to Squares
The New Year
We Laugh Indoors
Crooked Teeth
Photobooth
Some Boys
Company Calls
Long Division
Grapevine Fires
Codes and Keys
What Sarah Said
I Will Possess Your Heart
I Will Follow You Into the Dark
Title Track
You Are A Tourist
Underneath the Sycamore
President of What?
Title and Registration
Doors Unlocked and Open
Soul Meets Body
CATH
The Sound of Settling

Encore:
Stay Young, Go Dancing
Styrofoam Plates
A Movie Script Ending
Transatlanticism

glad to hear they played a long set and gave folks a good show. I went to their last show at the Fillmore and I thought that poster was the worst one I have ever received there (just gave it to someone outside on the street because it looked like something they would have just sitting there at Amoeba that you could grab).

I could not believe the demand for this show. Craigslist was ridiculous. Didn't see anyone selling a single ticket for less than $100 and everyone searching for them were will to pay $80 or more. I suppose its good to know that they have that loyal base, but this show seemed to have something else going on which was weird considering they have been relatively quiet for a couple of years.

Oh shit, Death Grips! I bet this one won't be that crowded either (under-the-radar acts + holiday weekend). Oh fuck, it's the same night as Richie Hawtin...damn. Here's hoping that Death Grips will be on early and I can hit up both.

So as it turns out, pre-sale for the Derrick Carter show is < $10. Decided it was worth buying one and making the effort to get down there right after Richie.

Agree. Not sure the Hawtin and LET shows appeal to the same group of people. Then again, I don't know much about the beat scene. Turnout for the DC show will likely suffer more by comparison.

I wasn't saying people who'd normally go to LET would be at Hawtin. I'm saying there are a bunch of good shows that night, I'm not sure I'd personally care to see who picks LET out of the choices available that night. LET looks the least interesting of everything going on that night, but that's just per my taste.

I posted about this already, but we are opening for Grant Hart (from Husker Du) with one TBA local band on June 23. That show is at Thee Parkside in SF. It costs $10. This is the Facebook event. (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=155358074534496)

I'll post this again closer to the date, but some of you San Franciscans/East Bay folks should also really come to the free show we are playing at the Uptown on Wednesday, June 29. It is with three Slumberland Records bands. It costs $0. Beer is reasonably priced there. All of the bands are good. What more could you want? Here is the info for that one:

Unlikely. If you got scared, it was them.

It's really weird, psychedelic hip-hop. They sample a lot of punk (Black Flag, Bad Brains...the 2nd jam even has a Pink Floyd sample). Not everyone's dress size, but fits me perfectly (I just love the production on their LP).

These Death Grips youtube videos have piqued my interest - any reviews of the live show? If the timing is right, I may be down to catch them before Hawtin. Tokimonsta seems relatively mellow (per my limited exposure to her work) - is it possible Death Grips comes on after her? Also, Portable Sunsets (ambient/experimental techno of a piece w/ the Border Community aesthetic) has been added to the Hawtin lineup, meaning Richie is unlikely to come on before midnight.

2. chiapet's opinion on Low End Theory is pretty much shit. Undesirables? Richie is the one drawing the furry boot rave crowd. Low End is all over the place with their music, if you can't find something you like at an LET you hate music.

They were awesome. That was probably the best overall crowd vibe Low End's had since doing nights here. I dunno why people on this board think Low End Theory is some shitty hip hop night for knuckledragging douchebags, it must be the LA stigma or something. It's more exciting than anything SF local artists are doing right now.

I dont think they think that; I certainly dont even think of it as a hip hop night. I thought it was a dubstep/electronic/bass night, and I'm realizing I'm just not into most dubstep. Those Death Grips videos don't do much for me.

Low End got a reputation for dubstep from people that went to a few nights in LA where dubstep artists happened to be featured (Low End LA is only a 3 1/2 hour event, so if you go on a night with 2 dubstep headliners and their dubstep resident DJ Nobody, it's gonna feel like you're at a dubstep club). Low End definitely has dubstep but I'd say 80% of the output isn't.

You're generalizing just as much as some other people are on here about LET. Although I've only been to one, I am fairly certain that, just based on the music curation alone, most of these generalizations are off-base....all are lame.

We're lucky to have something this cool on a regular basis. Maybe a couple/few might not hit everyone's sweet spot, but it's nearly certain that something will come around at some point to get you there. Some people might want to try opening their fucking minds a bit more.

I thought the same thing when I saw that. Two nights of Thievery? Are they doing something special, or do the promoters think that can sell 2 nights worth? Seems like TC have been around quite a bit in the last year or so. I would actually prefer to hear a DJ set from them at this point.

I think of it as a dubstep night/event. I realize that it's more of an eclectic kind of gig, but when I see most of the acts the acts they put together on any given night I think dubstep. I have never been to LET so this is the worst kind of generalization. They have booked acts that would get me out, but I've never made it. Maybe it's time to give them a chance. Not for the Death Grips night though! :)

I think it will be fun! But I can understand why people might not want to go to Mighty on a school night for an act they're not that interested in.

Hawtin will be fuuuuuun. I'm still pretending I'm hitting up Derrick Carter after.

Fuck yes! Wtf, I can't believe they're playing that tiny little room. One of the *most* underrated indie.pop acts around, imo.

What's the deal with tickets for the Hemlock? It's been many, many years since I've seen a show there...do they do advance sales?

wmgaretjax

safe as houses is easily one of the best pop albums in recent memory. definitely will be hitting that one up. it'll be nice to see zac do his thing again.

Drew, I've never heard of them doing advance sales for a show. There will be someone selling tickets by the door to the back room a little before the show. Even though it's a tiny space, I've never had an issue when turning up a little early to the bar.

I might be up for that show

Edit: I am wrong, they apparently do advance sales for the occasional show now - it's noted on their website if they do for the show in question (not this one).

Have you been to the hemlock before? (Even not for a show) It's one of my favorite bars in that area and it's a fun place to see music. The "venue" is a little room in the back, it's not the best set up ever, but it's uhm.. intimate (I think they claim to have a capacity of 80 people which I don't believe). Definitely worth checking out.

No way 80 people can fit in that little closet. Ha.

Anyone going to Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings at Stern Grove on Sunday? It's free!
