I thought the crowd last night was kinda lame at PW at first. It got better after 2 imo, a bit more dancing going on where I was at.

It wasn't miserable, but it wasn't that fun either. On the upside, I ended up coming home fairly early and will probably make it out to Mighty tonight.

That sucks it wasn't fun.I had a great though hanging out before.

Yea, great seeing you! Thanks for coming out for a bit. :)

So... there were a few people talking about going to the Calvertron & Figure / Meat Katie thing tonight at Mighty, they've posted set times on FB:
10:00 Dex Stakker
11:30 Figure
12:45 Calvertron
2:00 Meat Katie
3:15 Syd Gris vs Dex Stakker
(4:00)

Dubstep Den:
11:00 Ultra Violet
12:00 Tek Freaks
1:00 Dulce Vita
2:00 Bogl & Dial
(3:00)

.....That's... rough. Not sure I'm gonna go, I'm not likely to be able to stay up past 3 tonight.

08/20 - Z-Trip, De La Soul with Nosaj Thing @ Warfield SF

am I the only one who finds de la soul a little out of place on this?

They are being that strict because the JB show (along with GYBE/AC) is a 2-ticket limit, will call w/ID only show to prevent scalping.

also: making you walk straight in the venue once you pick up your ticket and treating you like a scalper if you say you are waiting for a friend.

I sent a friendly email to GAMH about what Bmack can do about his situation and this is what I got:

We wanted to remind you of the special ticketing rules for the James Blake show at the Great American Music Hall on Sunday, May 22. These rules have been in place since the show was announced and are intended to restrict both scalper access and motivation so that we get the most tickets into actual fans' hands at the reasonable price set. We hope that everyone will forgive the minor inconveniences associated with them in light of the greater good.

Please note the following:

1. There is a two (2) ticket limit per customer.

2. Tickets will ONLY be available online (www.gamhtickets.com ) - there are NO outlet/box office /phone sales for this show. All tickets will be will call.

3. No hard tickets will be issued at the time of sale.

4. All ticket purchasers will have to present photo ID and the credit card used for purchase at will-call on the night of the show. ONLY the person whose name is on the card used to purchase the tickets can pick them up. All purchasers and their guests must then enter the venue immediately upon receipt of their tickets from the will-call window.

5. Once tickets have been purchased there will be no name changes.

6. No refunds or exchanges.

Thank you and enjoy the show!

-GAMH

Automated email. They are really cracking down on these scalpers.

The pre-sale tickets to the James Blake DJ set after show at SOM Bar are sold out, FYI. They will be selling tickets at the door, though. I'd like to go, but I'm not going to be horribly disappointed if I have to miss out on a night at the fucking SOM Bar.

Anyone know of any other late-night shows going on tonight?

I'm hoping the show is early in the day/afternoon, so the drive home can be bearable. Or... just make up some excuse as to why you're late Tuesday morning.

Why won't venues in this fucking town post set times? Someone at the Fillmore prints out the set times that are posted in the load-in cage for every show. I bet it's the very same person that is responsible for their Twitter and FB feeds. Is it really that difficult to just pop them up there fer fux sake?! Nearly all the venues in LA do this (with all GV shows posted by Dani, I think).

Props to Slim's for breaking away from the dimwits: @SlimsBox

GeezrRckr

I doubt that's the case...I think it's a simple matter of it not being the culture here and laziness/ambivalence. If anything, it might get more people there earlier so they don't miss the start of sets. On top of that, the number of people that would actually pay attention to set times (outside of us nutcases), is very, very small. I would bet a large sum that if a study was ever done on revenue pre/post set times being revealed down in LA that the difference would be negligible at worst, and increased at best.

I wished more people would harp on them about it. As it is, it's pretty much just Fikus and I.

who are you kidding? if they post set times people will quickly catch on, and people will drink elsewhere and show up minutes before the band begins. without set times people worry about missing the beginning, get there earlier, and drink more inside.

Right before I read this post I thought I was going to make a strong argument for why they should release times by saying that last weekend my friends and I were trying to drunkenly call The Regency to get Yelle's set time. We were having fun pregaming at my friend's apartment and we wanted to show up right before she began. Instead we were forced to drink at the venue because we were nervous about missing her and we thought it was lame.

Reading your post was the most frustrating "oh, no shit" moment of my life. Infuriating but this is clearly the reason why...making my belligerent friends shell out more money at the venue.

GeezrRckr
05-25-2011, 06:56 PM
I don't agree. People show up late to shows in this town (and bitch about early start times all the time). If they knew ahead of time, they would get there earlier.

I think the "don't tell them and they will buy more drinks" old school thinking might have been the case before the music biz became totally corporate (and run more professionally...one upside). Think about it...how many shows have we gone to together recently that started right_on_time!

EDIT: on top of both sides of the argument...why is LA doing it? That's a pretty big trend to set.

shakermaker113
05-25-2011, 06:57 PM
Reading your post was the most frustrating "oh, no shit" moment of my life.

lol, sorry. but thanks for backing me up.

for the record I fully support the posting of set times, I have found this frustrating since my very first concert (god I had a long wait...). I love the fact that GV do it so reliably in LA, and I don't support hiding them as a means of making money. but it makes sense from a business standpoint. I understand it, but dislike it.

GeezrRckr
05-25-2011, 07:01 PM
And, let me reiterate...I don't disagree with the assumption as to why (just did a shitty job of iterating it). I am just saying that it's short-sighted and outdated in today's world of Twitter/FB/Pony Express. Being in close contact with your customers and providing exceptional service is what the LA venues are proving to be what works.

Drinkey McDrinkerstein
05-25-2011, 07:06 PM
i think you're definitely onto something in that it's a cultural thing. in L.A. EVERYTHING definitely is planned out to a T. We demand to know exactly how to plan out our lives. A big part of this is how fucking hard it it is to get from point A to point B here. Venues probably got sick of answering phone calls and emails asking for set times.

chiapet
05-25-2011, 07:07 PM
People you know may show up late for shows. Most people I know who are more casual concert goers show up somewhere between the door time and the 'show' time and then buy expensive drinks and complain about bands going on late, and never catch on that they should just show up later.

I think the 'culture' here is actually that venues don't have an act on at the show starting time, usually. I can't believe this is for any reason other than to draw people in and get them to buy drinks. The 'late' starts always seem to get blamed on the bands, when they're going on at the set time they were given.

It is not like that in other cities! Now that I'm used to SF, I am almost always too late at shows in other cities. Even in cities where I assumed it would be more fashionable to show up (and start) late, I've actually missed shows entirely by using SF time.

travelfan
05-25-2011, 07:21 PM
So, question. Walking from my friend's place in Cow Hollow (stuck in Palo Alto for now) to The Fillmore tomorrow night...doable? I know it is doable distance wise (25ish minutes) but am I randomly going to end up in a hood somewhere along the line? Familiar with SF venues but not the geography as a whole. Probably gonna take a cab there but I'm going alone this show and just want to make sure it's safe in case I'm too drunk to wait for a taxi on the way out...my patience tends to wear thin and I make stubborn and ambitious walking decisions often, usually in third world countries so my luck has probably run its course by now.

shakermaker113

Cities where shows start more or less on time and consequently throw me off: NYC, Chicago, Seattle, Atlanta, Austin, Boston, [pretty much every midwestern or southern city I've been to]. I've had the same problem in the UK, but not really in other countries. Now keep in mind I'm not saying that every show starts precisely at the moment of the show start time listed -- just not the excessive tardiness that we see at most shows here. And obviously I'm not including places that do late night DJ sets and the like.

Drinkey McDrinkerstein

I'm theorizing about why Los Angeles specifically DOES post set times, btw. Not only does Goldevoice do it, but most venues here have their own twitter/facebook accounts that post them. Some venue websites are starting to post the set times right in the show calendar.

Yeasayer was a lot of fun this evening. The new songs were great, the tweaking done to the old songs works quite well, the lights were very cool and the band really enjoyed themselves. This show was much better than when we saw them in Seattle '10. The Smith Westerns were pretty good, but I don't need to see them again. We got free posters and Erika snagged a setlist. The setlist is missing the 2 song encore, which included the audience singing Tears for Fears' Shout, fun stuff.

So James Zabiela KILLED it last night. He is always such a blast live. Only complaint is that the DJ booth at Vessel blocks you from actually seeing what is going on on the turntables, which is half the fun of seeing JZ. Other than that though, great great night. Absolutely worth how exhausted I am at work today.

I actually liked Vessel a lot more than I expected. There was pretty much no line for entry, and even though I was reeeeally dubious regarding the crowd, once JZ came on, everyone was really dancing.

... Meant to be a DEMF conflict resolution but now I just want to see him again.

Glad to hear Vessel didn't spoil the fun for you. As I've said before, I think the crowd problems so endemic to the Thursday BASE shows are largely a function of promotional tactics. Perhaps the Obey the Kitty people are shooting for something different.

chiapet
05-26-2011, 01:44 PM
Yea guedita had mentioned that regarding BASE. When we first walked in, I was NOT happy with the crowd. Like, all the seating in the whole place is for bottle service? And those areas were filled with people who looked like they were going to be super annoying. (Like drunk girls in party dresses). But as it turned out, the small space meant everyone on the dance floor was actually dancing.

I'd definitely go back. And holy crap, the first couple of blasts of bass at the start of JZ's set actually made me a little nauseated. That's always a good sign! :thu

Ross1492
05-26-2011, 01:55 PM
Haha, the bottle service area takes up a ridiculous amount of space - people at the rear of the dancefloor must feel as though they're dancing to entertain the VIP's on either side. My personal rule of thumb: if a venue does bottle service / has a VIP area, it is not a space conducive to hosting EDM shows.

Minimum, unless he's touring w/ a label-mate. Mezzanine can fit more people than other suitable venues. This means more money for the promoters. Money, in theory, with which to pay for a longer set. Dreaming big.

And if I'm remembering correctly, I kinda like the openers. I'm probably in -- I'll text you guys on Thursday night.

I just got back from the intense mind/body slaughter that is Detroit fucking Electronic Music Festival, and even though I should be sleeping for the next 4 or 5 days, I kiiind of want to go dance.

I believe I may have posted this already, perhaps some months ago. I'm reposting now b/c I think it may be of particular interest to the SF peeps that either attended DEMF or enjoyed listening to the livestreams.

PVH is very much in the same vein as Klock, Dettmann, Cio D'or, Traversable Wormhole. The west coast rarely gets a chance to hear this sort of techno. Those that enjoyed the above-mentioned names at DEMF: I strongly encourage you to attend this event.

Oh man, tonight's Iron & Wine show had the worst crowd that I have ever seen at the Warfield. They ran the gambit; inappropriate cat calls (several regarding the Giants), inappropriate clapping/cheering, space invaders galore, chatterboxes and total retardedness. Sam tried to play it cool and say that the crowd was full of fun and high people. Later on, one of the band members commented that some people must have been on some bad acid. Musically, the show was good. It included both rocking versions of songs as well as extended ambient jam sessions. Good stuff, but compared to the other 3 full band shows that I have seen with Sam, this show ranks third.

Gayngs was dope. Blew my expectations away and it seemed that they were really feeling the vibe. I didn't even realize until they hit the stage but a lot of the band was in the crowd for White Hinterland who also did a good job. Pardon my ignorance but who was the girl in Gayngs and what song did she cover? I'm sure I'm not the only one but I fell in love today haha.

Yea I think you did, but it's good you've reposted because I completely forgot. I tend to ignore listings with no venue attached but I think I'm going to have to do this.

My declaration on Tuesday that I need to be sober for a while must have been a fucking joke. Geezus, there is a lot going on in SF this month.

Ha, my group and I had a totally different experience. They were boring and cheesy as fuck. The only truly interesting moment of the set was when Har Mar Supertar covered "One More Try." And, although she had a nice voice, their female singer has ZERO stage presence. She'll make a fine career as a backup singer, but the likelihood of her ever breaking out of that role is slim.

(she covered a Sade song...and with no passion whatsoever)

No idea her name, she covered By Your Side by Sade.

I'm decidedly on the side of the people who loved the performance. At first I was brutally disappointed when I realized we were going to see a mere fraction of the band. I skipped their Coachella performance for Boys Noize/Chemical Brothers because I already had tickets for this show and felt a little tricked, although I'm not sure why I was assuming that they would all tour.

Once I got over that I got really into their set. I disagree on the cheese factor. I think what really interests me about Gayngs is that they are constantly walking the line perilously close to cheesy but somehow manage to pull it off as sophisticated and sensual, at least to me. Faded High was outstanding last night, and count me as very very very surprised to learn that the singer of Crystal Rope is a guy.

Overall I loved it, but I always forget that in a city where shows are notorious for always starting well after the "start" time, The Independent still manages to be the statistical outlier. I waltzed in probably at 8:20 and feel like White Hinterland didn't get onstage until at least 9:00, despite that it was supposed to all start at 8:00. My b, I am too punctual for my own good...showing up at 8:20 was painful although I knew it was definitely still too early.

That's cool, I totally understand. Since Erika is swamped with finals and final projects, we're probably not going to make it out tonight anyway.

I am, provided I've caught up on sleep by then. I didn't catch very much of Cassy at all in Detroit this weekend, so I have some penance to pay. (And that's the main reason I am not going out tonight -- well, that and a 6AM meeting).

Edward and I were talking about going to Leisure, if that doesn't pan out, I'd be glad to go to the End Up.

Amon Tobin live A/V show 'ISAM' (Tip your hat to our own Alex Lazarus for putting together something truly remarkable) Comin' soon to SF, so stay tuned!

And Hawtin's event says

Friday July 1 / RICHIE HAWTIN / Nikola Baytala / +++

I'm assuming the +++ means more artists? If doors are at 9 and Hawtin goes on ~12:30 or so, seems like there'd be at least one more opener.

Amon's set up is on a whole new level. Did you watch the video on its design/construction? It's basically an art installation...with Amon's awesome music as a soundtrack.

I hope Blasthaus is able find a suitable venue for it (he's not popular enough to sell the obvious venues that can fit an installation of that size/shape). I can't wait...it's been a very long time since I've been to an Amon Tobin show.

No way can 103 Harriet hold this thing. I don't think Mezz or Mighty (the usual venues for them) can either. I wonder if they'll do another one-off at that venue where they did the free Yeasayer show a couple years back. That's big enough and likely has the capacity to make them some money as well. This is surely going to be a pricey production.

Although, if you look at the 1:20 mark, you can see it propped up on a stage in the background. If that's the actual installation (and not a test model), then perhaps it would fit in one of those venues (but, to me, it looks vastly bigger in the other parts of the vid).
