I was actually hoping BFD would have *something* I was interested in -- it's practically the only event I catch each year with my south bay friends. But there is absolutely nothing on the lineup this year.

Are you not a fan of The Strokes? :(!!!!!

Hey, you don't get to complain. Lightning in a Bottle is going to be amazing and I can't go.

I know, I am extremely stoked on LIB, I have just been wanting to see Fatboy Slim for a while. Last time I was supposed to see him I bought an EDC ticket like 2 days before he cancelled.

it was last night, I didnt end up going but I will hit you up when the next one comes around. My friend jonboy is a DJ and plays the really fun parties.

Sounds good, I'm down to check one out.

Last night's Yong Money show was fucking amazing.

Lil Wayne / Nicki Minaj / Rick Ross / Birdman/ 2 Short / E-40 / Travis Barker / Yelawolf / Paul Wall / Mac Mayne / Jae Millz / Lil Twist / Gudda Gudda / Cory Gunz / Shanelle

Epic.

Holy shit, you are right! Oh man..the bears there won't know what hit 'em...hilarious!

I may have to hit that up after my softball game. Two of the best local bands around right now...and for only $8 and a great cause. Has anyone been to a show there? Probably perfect for a lo-fi gig.

Aw shit, from the Indy twitter:

The dates of TV On The Radio shows have changed. All tickets for the 4/29 show will be honored on 5/9 and all 4/30 tickets are good on 5/10

Not to sound like a spoiled brat (considering the circumstances for the postponement)...but this blows. That's the same night as the Mogwai show.

Isn't the Mogwai show likely to be canceled/postponed?

This is fact. That is speculation....and I'm being nice.

What? Sorry for trying to spin a potentially optimistic light on the situation that would allow for you to still see both shows.

And I'll bet at least a few of those TVOTR tickets will get sold on craigslist because people will have other conflicts.

chiapet
04-25-2011, 05:24 PM
Why would the Mogwai show be postponed or canceled? (Edited to clarify - they hadn't canceled tonight's show so I assume the rest of their tour is on) The Mogwai shows are at a different venue (Regency). The circumstances do suck... maybe time to see if you can trade (or buy) a ticket for the other night? Seems like the change in dates could cause some other people to need to dump their tickets, too.

guedita
04-25-2011, 05:25 PM
Mogwai had to postpone some of their east coast shows because of visa issues. I just always assume the worst when it comes to visa issues because apparently it's a red tape battle for a bunch of bands to get their shit together. (I'm still bitter about missing out Tensnake twice because he didn't have his visa in order).

chiapet
04-25-2011, 05:28 PM
Sorry I guess I was editing while you were posting - their show tonight in Toronto is not canceled, and they're supposed to be playing in the US on Wednesday, so I'm assuming they have gotten the visa situation straightened out.

Mogwai will get their stuff sorted out. I'm not concerned and think all the chatter about them canceling is merely post count masturbation. There's always more under the covers in these situations then even the Coachella message board mavens are privy to.

It's no matter. I got it taken care of.

No worries though. The AYLI guys are a great group throwing fantastic parties and they deserve any/all positive publicity that they receive. Rumors of near-future guests are tantalizing to say the least.

Hahaha. Yes, the crowd is beyond awful. I've heard some interesting things with regards to promotion for these "BASE" nights, but I don't care to elaborate without confirmation.

DJ's of this ilk used to do a friday or saturday show at mighty when visiting the city. Now we're left with these unbearable thursday shows at vessel. Outside the occasional visit to the end-up for kontrol and semi-regular end-of-night drop-ins at 222 hyde, Public Works is really the only proper "club" I care to frequent these days.

Ross1492
04-27-2011, 01:51 PM
As in, "why the hell do they book so much bass music?" If that's the thrust of your query, not sure I could give you a proper answer. Not really into much of that scene beyond some of the less grating stuff (mt. kimbie, joy orbison, scuba). I imagine it's growth in popularity warrants it.

Still think the booking policy at PW is pretty spot on. They seem to offer a wide range of EDM styles to satisfy a wide range of persuasions. Ben Klock, DJ Harvey, the Cityfox showcase, Soul Clap v. Wolf & Lamb, Scuba v. SCB - that's a damn good track record for a place that's less than 1 year old.

As an aside, I desperately want Hawtin to return to the city (been 3 fucking yrs in may!!!) at this venue - it's so well suited to big-room techno.

Yea, that's the only reason I didn't suggest it. The immediate area (to me) is not very great for drinking out of the back of your car. I don't feel like we'd get in trouble with the law, but might be bothered by other people who are just, you know, hanging out, drunk.

The management loves bass music. They built the sound system with that kind of music in mind. Most clubs have a slant. This is theirs.

Donald Glover killed it at The Fillmore last night. Been a long time since I have been to that venue.

Disagree. The stand-up wasn't long enough. The hip hop wasn't good. We could hear him more than we could the band, and that may have been a problem. Usually hip hop shows are a bit unrehearsed and unclean (See Odd Future, Das Racist, Lil' B, Big Boi) but Donald Glover had OVER-rehearsed every single moment. He is a perfectionist and it showed, but sometimes perfection isn't what we want to see.

Though his riffing with the audience was fun: "You want to hear 'Freaks and Geeks' again? What are you, 5?" Plus that four song medley was really cool.

AND he was done with everything (encore and all) by 10:30... that's just not how we do it in SF, let alone the Fillmore.

My last complaint has to do with the drink cost: $7 for a Bud light or a Budweiser; $8 for a 16oz Fat Tire, Lagunitas IPA, Stella, or $12 for a 24oz of the same choices. No venue besides a sports arena charges that high. The Fillmore is dumb... really really dumb. For real.

I actually started the night being pissed at some of the workers of The Fillmore so I agree their was shit to complain about. The stand up also could have been easily 30 min longer, that's for sure.

I don't know I have been to Odd Future at Slims and Coachella, Lil' B at Mezzanine and Coachella, Big Boi at the Indy and it was truly nice to see such a polished set from Donald. I was getting tired of seeing the rapper in front of a guy on his Mac pushing play. The live band added so much swag to his show.

The only real issue I had with it was he didn't perform "Break", it especially would have been great in the Encore after "Lights Turned On" which was a lot of fun.

I didn't have any issues with the sound from where I was standing.

D'oh!! Regardless, I'm completely bored by and absolutely hate bass music, so that's a major conflict for me.

I get that it may not be your thing, but you didn't look at the lineup or read my post :) -- there is a second stage that is absolutely not dubstep or bass:
Deniz Kurtel (Crosstown Rebels, Wolf & Lamb // NYC) LIVE
Kenneth Scott (Smash Hit, Nightlight, Moniker)
Rich Korach (As You Like It, Paxahau)
Briski (Re:body)

Cara and I saw Rich Korach last night - I wish I'd paid more attention (was early in the night).

Also, Scuba v. SCB is very different than Scuba . . . much more techno oriented (SCB is essentially Scuba's techno alias). AYLI would never book a full night of out-and-out bass music (rightly or wrongly, I'm including dubstep in that phrase).

Scuba hosts his own semi-regular night, SUB:STANCE, at Berghain. The guys that run that place would never let some generic wobble-fuck set up shop. Though nominally dubstep, much of his work appeals to the techno set. As I understand it, he's now dabbling in house as well.

fikus222
04-30-2011, 04:21 PM
Heidi - I saw that there was better music upstairs, it's just not enough to get me there.

I don't discount the fact that PW pulls in the better half of Bass Music Artists, it's just that I don't like the music enough to put up with the parts I don't like.

Speaking of SCB, here's a good mix he did for XLR8R:

Off topic. Not sure if you would remember this, but were you playing frisbee during Fun at Coachella?

Oh - and I just wanted to say to HandBanana, that the Dirtybird pajama party last night was throwing down a lot more than just boring bloopidebops. J. Phlip was playing some funky hip hop and Justin Martin threw in some acid breakbeats.

Also I learned that the parking garage at 5th and Mission is expensive. I am forgoing driving in for Adam Freeland next week and am going to try to stay out all night til the BART starts running again. Who is with me?

Is there street parking near the venue? I've never been there.
My friend and I are staying in the city all weekend, so we're driving in.

Yeah it looked like there was ample street parking on Folsom/Howard near where 103 is. You should be okay.

It's definitely a steal. I normally don't venture out on a work night because I'm lame, but this is a MUST GO for me. I'm even missing Dieselboy just because it's on a Thursday.

EDIT* How is the Mighty? I've never actually been to a show IN San Francisco. Just the Fox in Oakland.

It's mighty pillar-y.

Hmmm. Ok. How's the sound?

To clarify, there are four obnoxiously-placed pillars on the dancefloor that obstruct the view/sound. However, there are four gigantic speakers pointing at the dancefloor from each corner. So it's loud. And there is usually a break dancing circle, at least the few times I've been there has been one. So people get dance-y, mighty dance-y.

Gribbz

I do enjoy dancing.

Thank you, Triple G.

I have never seen a break dancing circle at Mighty.

GoodGirlGalaxy

Seriously? I'm usually more entertained by the circle than the opening DJs.

chiapet

Neither have I. The only thing I can find complaint with at Mighty is that it's ridiculously crowded sometimes. The pillars have never been a problem for me sound-wise, and "view"... do you really need to watch a DJ?

guedita
05-07-2011, 01:35 PM
I did see a guy go down on a girl up against a pillar at Mighty.

Matt: it's small, loud, and sweaty. Perfect for High Contrast.

I saw Hercules & Love Affair (with their outfits and singers) and Matthew Dear (who had a brooding band) at Mighty. So yeah, the view's important for certain acts.

And I agree it'll be great for High Contrast.

Is that your signature dance move?

Is that your signature dance move?

No. A step separates the bar area from the dance floor. It's quite small and easy to trip over in a crowd.

The Mighty is my favorite place to see an EDM show in SF. It's not terribly convenient to get to, but it's consistently got the best vibe (imo) and I always come home with some funny San Francisco story whenever the party bus is parked out front.

Is that $8 thing a limited presale or the price for the show? Google only turns up one link about the show and it's nothing useful.

As far as I know, it's a presale price, but I don't think they're on sale, yet.
