LOL

thats exactly how I felt during their coach 08 set. i was almost falling over in boredom. Thank GOD for the rest of that night though :)

also, whos in for MMJ? Drew? Dorkfish? Its going to be one hell of a show.

MMJ were underwhelming at OSL, it was really disappointing to me. And I'm a fan. They eventually got going by the end but it took so long to get moving that they almost lost me and they definitely lost my wife.

I would imagine a Fox show to be better. When I saw them at the Fox in Atlanta a few years ago they fucking rocked out.

I just don't see myself paying $60 to see them again after the last time was so boring. Maybe I'll really enjoy the new album and that will turn my mind around.

Holy fuck it would be so awesome if it is him. He's from San Jose so it's not a completely unlikely scenario. Weird venue choice, though, I don't remember the sound being all that great there.

Good news for those of us seeking DCFC tix:

Tickets will ONLY BE AVAILABLE via www.Livenation.com. Tickets will NOT BE AVAILABLE at The Fillmore box office, charge by phone, or outlets.
** Will call tickets MUST be picked up by the CARD HOLDER ONLY. Alternate names for will call WILL NOT BE ALLOWED.

In the spirit of fair access to tickets for fans, this event is WILL CALL ONLY, and there is a 2 ticket limit per customer. You will need to bring your government issued photo ID and the credit card you used to purchase the tickets to the box office window on the day of the show to retrieve these tickets. ONCE YOUR ORDER IS PICKED UP YOU MUST DIRECTLY ENTER THE VENUE.

** LIVENATION AT ITS DISCRETION WILL CANCEL ANY AND ALL ORDERS WITHOUT NOTICE THAT EXCEED THE TICKET LIMIT. THIS INCLUDES DUPLICATE ORDERS HAVING THE SAME NAME, BILLING ADDRESS OR CREDIT CARD.

GeezrRckr
03-24-2011, 07:41 AM
How is that good news?

What it means is that the pressure on getting them will only be higher (since they are not holding back any at the box office, as they usually do).

shakermaker113
03-24-2011, 08:04 AM
cancelling orders that exceed limits makes it harder for scalpers.

GeezrRckr
03-24-2011, 08:24 AM
Not to be overly cynical, but we already know that the scalpers are always one step ahead.....often with a wink and a nod from the promoters. The difficulty with this onsale transcends well beyond the scalpers' influence on procuring tix. These measures will have little to no effect since demand >>>> capacity of the room.

We're in dead horse realm here....it's going to be a tough ticket to get, any way you slice it.

chiapet
03-24-2011, 08:29 AM
I don't understand how this makes it so much more difficult to get a ticket. Just get on the damned internet when they go on sale. :P The capacity hasn't changed so it's no more difficult than it was with the 'normal' rules.

GeezrRckr
03-24-2011, 08:32 AM
Dead horse.

I was addressing Fikus' claim that the rules for this was "good news" since there are now NO tickets available at the box office. This is a significant difference from usual Fillmore onsales, thus taking out one option for getting them.

/Dead Horse. Seriously, let's move on.

shakermaker113
03-24-2011, 08:50 AM
2 ticket limit and requiring that the purchaser enters also limits scalping. each scalper can scalp at most one ticket. that is better than no restrcitions. hence 'good news'.

/very dead horse.

Why?

Well I kinda grew up on her, my aunt bought me her first album on my 13th birthday for example. I have never seen her live and I have kind of made it my mission this year to see everything I have always wanted to see live (mainly Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Neutral Milk Hotel, and The Flaming Lips performing all of Soft Bulletin so I can finally see The Spark That Bled live). But with this mentality I have went to other extremes like seeing Dru Hill this Friday and Kylie Minogue in Vegas in May.

In case anyone cares, I just got this from the BOTH box office. Useful info for planning your time around shows there (unlike at other bigger venues around town...although the Indy and Rickshaw pretty much follow this same protocol)

What you want to look at is the start time of each show. From that, you can usually deduct with fairly good accuracy what time each band will go on. Most of the time each band set is one hour apart. So if the show starts at 9, the set times are 9, 10, 11.

In this case, the Wye Oak show, if you look at our calendar you'll see that this show starts at 10. Therefore, the set times will be 10, 11, and midnight.
You can use this method for the vast majority of our shows. Usually band sets are 40-45 minutes with a 15-20 minute set change. The exceptions are nights when there are four or five or six bands, or also times when a band will be performing a certain body of work in its entirety and they'll be playing a longer set.

Of course, the usual caveat of 15-30 min wiggle rooms always applies...especially for the other venues (BOTH seems to run a pretty tight ship, in my experience).

I've been there twice since then, I was there last night actually. I talked to a bouncer about it the first time I was there and he said it fucking sucks because they are losing money. They installed a large screen HD TV to like show sports games during the day or something. There were probably around 30 people in there last night on the dance floor at its peak.

For the bigger shows, they most definetely pushed it well past 100. I was there for pan-pot in early january when all of this went down with the fire marshall - what started as a wonderfully raucous affair quickly morphed into 2 guys spinning records for what felt like 6 people (temporary setback thank goodness as the party moved to an underground spot in soma and pan-pot proceeded to blow the roof off for a further 4 hrs).

Sad development really as 222 hyde is one of my favorite spots in the city - would hate to see them fold over this on account of losing money.

I noticed today that Slim's has had its alcohol license revoked.

This is due to noise complaints from one neighbor. She's a total b!tch and has had a vendetta against the venue ever since she moved into the neighborhood. Slim's liquor license is dependent upon not being a nuisance to the community, so these noise complaints caused it to be revoked for a week.

An infamous underground venue in SF - lots of big house/techno names played out there over the course of the last few years.

Haha yes, some sadly loose writing on my part - the place did in fact have a sterling reputation

With regards to the 360 degrees element, guessing it's in reference to the fact that the dj "booth" was most often in the middle of the floor and the crowd surrounded it on all sides.

DJ Koze? Damn. Was the Compound the place that had some sort of 360 degree element to it? I think someone was telling me about it once.

not necessarily a show, but in case anyone has a craving for local politics you might be interested in the hearing on 4/12 the proposed new EC rules. They'll be taking public comment as well.

http://www.sfgov2.org/index.aspx?page=2535

Proposed Rules (all of which will result in >$$$ at the door)

These Conditions shall apply to all EC permitted events with an anticipated occupancy capacity of over one hundred (100) individuals.

1. (a) Security personnel shall be provided in a ratio one (1) guard for every fifty (50) patrons. (b) A security supervisor shall be provided at a ratio of one (1) supervisor for every four (4) guards.

2. All individuals entering the premises shall be scanned by a metal detector.

3. All occupants of the premises shall be ID Scanned (including patrons, promoters, and performers, etc.). ID scanning data shall be maintained on a data storage system for no less than 15 days and shall be made available to local law enforcement upon request.

4. High visibility cameras shall be located at each entrance and exit point of the premises. Said cameras shall maintain a recorded data base for no less than fifteen (15 days) and made available to local law enforcement upon request.

5. The exterior of the premises shall be equipped with lighting of sufficient power to illuminate and make easily discernible the appearance and conduct of all persons on or about the premises. Additionally, the position of such lighting shall not disturb the normal privacy and use of any neighboring residences.

6. The premises shall provide a Security Plan acceptable to the Chief of Police which includes a Security proposal and EC Best Practices, collectively referred to as a Security Plan.

7. All Security personnel that protect life and/or property shall maintain a current and valid California Department of Consumer Affairs Guard Card and shall comply with all rules and regulations governing the Card.

8. At all times the premises is open to the public a readily identifiable Manager employed by the EC permit holder shall be on-site.

9. All Federal, State, and Local permits, required posting, including but not limited to occupancy, shall be posted in a conspicuous location clearly visibly to the public. Said permits shall be maintained valid and current.

What bothers me is that these measures would have no impact except driving up operating costs. I'm really tired of the local gov't trying to pass blame and responsibility for street crime onto venues. The only thing that is at all pertinent to the incidents over the last couple of years is the street lighting & cameras, and it grates me that the city would claim property owners/leasers must be responsible for keeping the street surrounding their premises safe. It's a shame not enough tax payers give a damn about venues... they won't put up any fight to this.

Truth. Underground spots are certainly a dime a dozen, and many are little more than small/ugly afterhrs gathering spots. IMO, the Compound was worthy of distinction mostly on account of the talent that played there - I certainly didn't intend to project any sort of holier-than-thou "old-school was better" vibe. The ID scanning thing isn't so bad, the non-pertinent information is deleted from the system after 24 hours. They only hold your information if you're kicked out of the club so if your ID comes up marked, they know not to let you in.

I heard that most venues in the city are going to start this soon. So I guess you should prepare to not go to most shows in San Francisco. Why would you not go to a venue because they scan your ID anyway? If you don't do anything stupid your info gets deleted in a day, plus they can't even store your address, its just name, age, license number.

guedita
03-27-2011, 12:25 PM

Egull

Yes, I would still go if thats how it was. Like I said, if you don't do anything stupid, it really does not affect you. If you sign up for a guest list at a venue, or buy tickets from a venue they store your information as well. They actually have more info name, phone number, e-mail, and they don't delete it. I get that this is information you choose to give up, but if you are giving these venues that much information anyway, I don't see why them temporarily having your name while you are in the venue is that big of a deal.

I doubt that's how they intend to use the information, or expect clubs to try to attempt this. The vast majority of intended use for scanning is obviously at the point of scan, but the main use that I can find for saving the information is to piece together information about incidents reported after the fact.

The scarriest prospect tho is abuses of the information by those other than the government. This information could potentially be very valuable to insurance companies or many types of employers.

chiapet
03-28-2011, 10:14 AM
Right, I'm not that worried about the explicitly stated intended use, but simply don't trust the data to be retained properly (both in terms of security and only retaining it for the specified period) and not shared for any other purpose. There is very little information about how this is expected to be administered and I suppose I doubt this would be handled in a technically competent manner.

I also have not been able to find definitive documentation on what the 2D barcodes on CA ids/licenses contain. Just "what is on the front of the card." I'd thought that add'l information was stored on the barcode. But even just the data on the front of the card is enough for identity theft, being that this contains your full name, address, date of birth, (a digital copy of your) signature, and in some cases SSN.

I went to an event a week ago that scanned IDs. I didn't know they would be doing so until I got to the front of the security line, and there had been no disclaimers about how data would be used or how long it would be retained.

Would bars or venues (or restaurants or theaters) requiring an ID scan stop me from going? I'm not sure. I see an obvious threat to some types of entertainment. People may not mind having their attendance recorded in this sense for events which have the appearance of being in the mainstream, but what if the event identifies you as part of a specific counter culture? What if your ID had to be scanned (and data retained) to get into a gay club? Perhaps that would not bother most of us either, but I know folks who work for conservative companies and are not out at work who feel really intimidated by this prospect.

Ultimately I suppose what bothers me the most is that it seems very pinpointed on a specific type of entertainment, that the type of entertainment we enjoy is just becoming an easy target as a 'solution' for a problem this entertainment does not cause. If they were to apply the same security and ID standards to sporting events, sports bars, straight strip clubs, etc, then perhaps I wouldn't have such a chip on my shoulder.

I really agree with you on this. I voluntarily sign up for guest lists sometimes and I have no real problem with letting people know that I go to clubs that play electronic music, but that decision is mine to share and I don't necessarily feel comfortable being mandated to have my personal information stored for any duration of time by the club.

Though won't these rules technically apply to all clubs and venues in the city, no matter what type of culture (mainstream or counter) they cater to?

Probably time for its own NorCal thread... but I'm with you on this. They have the data on where the "problem" spots are. But none of those neighborhoods (*cough*N.Beach*cough*SOMA*cough* and to some degree all the douchiness in the Marina, but that is mainly associated with bar bromance) will let the legislation single them out. Its all or none and that is a shame. Also, if they really look at the data, I bet most of the issues don't happen on nights when there is an actual concert. DJing/pure Electronic acts certainly attract a different clientele than your normal gig.

Right, they are using real IDs that don't belong to them. It won't stop them from borrowing someone else's ID, but it would stop people from using IDs they've bought that were reported as lost/stolen.

I don't think it's a real problem either, I've only said I support keeping underage kids out. :) If scanning the ID without retaining data would allow them the lip service of protecting minors, I would probably be OK with that.

dangerous tactic. I'm sure if prepared they could rattle off a bunch that in their opinion could have been prevented. These measures aren't being conjured out of thin air. And I'm sure they'd cite stats from other cities that have tried this as well.

The angle here is to frame these things as doing damage to the smaller clubs and promoters, creating a less dynamic business environment, and making it much harder for them to compete. Entertainment is a huge important industry in SF, and trying to regulate it out of existence.

Appeals to personal liberties are worthless in situations like this.

According to that email I read from Ritual, the scanners don't reveal if you have any warrants or anything like that. The city can't give away your information without your permission. If it's deleted in 24 hours like it's supposed to be, it isn't a big deal.

Furthermore, if a conservative company in the Bay Area fired someone because they found out that person attended a gay club, there would be a discrimination suit in the millions and an SF judge is giving that to the gay person 10/10 times. Not to mention you'd be able to sue the city for leaking that information and not deleting it after 24 hours.

I'm more worried about the new security measures causing a ticket price increase.

If the person is simply borrowing the ID from the legal aged person and gives it back to that person later then you're right. However if the ID is reported lost and replaced then the old one isn't "real" anymore. It's worthless at any place that's going to scan it.

15 days is much different, but I'm still wondering how that information could be used in a bad way to hurt citizens not doing anything wrong in the first place. Seems like they'd have to know your name to search for you, and if they know your name it's probably because you did something fucked up. I think they're more interested in the data from "urban" clubs that gangstas go to, since shit tends to hit the fan at those spots all the time.

Chris Rock doesn't approve.

I don't mind metal detectors. Its better than having some security guy run his hands along your pants to check your pockets. Just don't bring a metal pipe with you and you should be good to go. Its not a bad price to pay to make sure that there are no guns/knives in the club.

I'm almost positive these will be used to suppliment pat downs, not replace them. They're still looking for bottles and and drug parephenalia (any reasonable person can easily sneak drugs in, but the person who doesn't have the sense to hide it well enough is the guy who's going to get himself into trouble). The 1015 dudes have even checked my jeans 5th pocket a couple times. I asked them about it and apparently they've snagged lots of coke baggies that way.

Are you talking about the little pocket inside the pocket?

You must look suspicious. ;)

But that sucks if they are going to do metal detectors AND pat downs. The lines to get into a venue are going to take forever if they do that.

These are all rules that I would actually appreciate, say, if I were going to a show at the Cow Palace. But it's just going to jack up the price and line wait time for small clubs who have absolutely nothing to do with these problems in the first place.

Peeking over the stall of the men's room "looking for coke" sounds like it start a fight.

1015 has only done that once in the 7 or so times I've been since moving up here, I think they're putting on a show for the cops that have been showing up outside the venue recently. If there's a line for the stall there, 75% of those in line just wanna use it for their drugs.

more like 99%.

How often does someone need to take a dump at a club, much less a half-dozen guys at once, every 20min.

It's not random. They only peek when they know it's being done. And if it isn't (which it always is), you've just been caught pushing shit out of your asshole by a huge bouncer. Even if he apologizes, I can't think of many more immasculating experiences. I think most guys would either laugh it off or just get out and forget about it ASAP.

dangerous tactic.

Appeals to personal liberties are worthless in situations like this.

hrm. good points. I nominate you to speak for us.

Harry's review of the Royksopp show (http://consequenceofsound.net/2011/03/live-review-royksopp-in-san-francisco-328/) last night. It pretty much sums up my impression of the show (and I especially agree with the KoL rmx being a completely horrible way to close the show). I enjoyed last nights show more than the one in 09 (despite the slightly excessive Karin vamping). In large part because the set list was better.

Hey thanks for linking me, I'd feel like a douche if I linked myself.

I agree, I loved 09 and thought it was fantastic but this was unbelievable and topped it with no problem. Royksopp just seemed like they were enjoying it. And I was wowed by Anneli Drecker this time, last time I just felt she was a sub for Karin.

They plan to use it with:

Phil Lesh & Friends (continuing the tradition of revolving lineups, including old as well as new friends)
West Coast Rambles, based on (and blessed by) Levon Helm's historic Rambles
Album night- we pick a favorite album or two to play live
Telstar night- we put together a band for free form improvisation
Sing-alongs to monthly Sunday morning gospel music
Trivia nights
Monthly big band night
Seminars with local musicians and artists
Our goal is to create a vibrant community gathering place: beautiful, comfortable, welcoming - for members of the community to commingle and enjoy good music.

Does anyone else think its weird that TVOTR is playing two nights at the Indy? It seems like they could play two nights at the Fox or Filmore.

Does this mean they are more or less likely to be playing OSL or TI?

I'm not complaining because I love the Indy but it has me thinking they are more likely to play one of the festivals because their more casual fans are not going to be able to see them at the Indy, as I would imagine its going to sell out in about 4 minutes. Hows that for a run-on sentence.
