Looks like Todd Terje will be at SOM bar on 3/18 - venue is meh but the king of funk/disco edits is a can't miss.

It seems as though twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall, SF is inundated w/ an inordinate amount of big (not to be confused w/ quality) EDM acts over the course of a single weekend.

Diggers, Boys Noize, Stacy Pullen, Matt Tolfrey, Carlo Lio, Todd Terje, PVD are all in town on either 3/18 or 3/19 - guess this is one of those weekends. The prospect of catching Stacy Pullen at Mighty before heading to SOMA for a late night Tolfrey set is particularly appealing.

Yann Tiersen put on another great show in SF last night. I only caught the last 2 songs of the opener Breathe Owl Breathe, but I enjoyed them a lot too. I could easily see them opening for some big tours in the coming year. They had sort of a Deerhoof feel, just not as experimental and more melodic (*observation based off 2 songs and never listening to them prior to this show). But back to Yann... the guy can mesmerize a crowd. I don't think anybody said a word or applauded until they were 3-4 songs in. Sound was great and security was pretty lax, likely due to the very chill crowd of the non-douchey 25-35 year olds.

James Blake @ GAMH 5/22

:D

Super excited for that. I've heard *rumors* that he is terrible live. But I'm not one to lean on rumors so I'm still going.

New :rolleyes, I paid $29 for the Childish Gambino show, nine of which goes straight to LiveNation. That is literally half the cost of the ticket, this is absurd. Has anyone been noticing the jump in fees lately?

Wow last night was great. SMD's live version of Ortolan was fucking great

Also, my friend Haydn Hoffman is coming up on Friday from LA to DJ at Temple. He is really legit, and we are testing out a new sustainable dance floor this weekend that generates power by people dancing. So if you aren't doing anything and want to come let me know, I can put anyone on a free all night guest list. And that goes for all shows at Temple. http://soundcloud.com/haydnhoffman

I've only been once, but I did think Mighty had slightly better sound.

GeezrRckr
03-15-2011, 08:50 AM
I am pretty particular about sound quality so here is my rankings of venues in town:
1) The Independent
2) GAMH
3) Fillmore
4) Warfield (which flips between the Fillmore, but they tend to lay too heavy on the loud there so that knocks them down a notch usually)
5) Rickshaw
6) Mighty (although, I've not yet seen a live band perform there, I don't think...just DJs)
7) 1015/103 Harriet (although, same caveat as Mighty)
8) Regency (can also be Slim's-esque awful some nights)
9) Mezzanine
10) Bimbo's
11) Bottom of the Hill
12) My living room
13) Slim's

I guess I should have included the Fox and New Parish, but this thread is SF-focused. If included, the Fox would be wedged between Rickshaw and Mighty (mostly because it's very inconsistent) and New Parish would be tied w/BOTH.

Shit, I knew I forgot some (outta sight outta mind).

Regency is another inconsistent one. It can be as bad a Slim's for some shows and Mezzanine-like at other times. As for Bimbo's...does anyone really care on this board? The shows they book there are (usually) pretty forgettable. But, yeah...your placement for it is accurate.

Yet another room to review. I've only seen one show there so do not feel like I have enough data to provide an opinion. You are likely the best person to assess that room.

guedita
03-15-2011, 09:14 AM
I agree with what I think jackstraw said a while ago about Public Works sound. They have a funktion system and it gets LOUD and the sound is definitely good, but the structure of the venue (wood beams everywhere etc) doesn't let that system do everything it could.

But seriously, Adam Freeland on Friday and Wolf + Lamb vs Soul Clap on Saturday is going to be the best weekend in May, hands down.

We've aired our grievances about Slim's before but:
1) The sound is pretty subpar and occasionally is show-ruining bad
2) They have poles in the middle of the floor
3) The crowds aren't the best
4) The bartenders might be the worst venue bartenders in the city

I'll agree that the poles in the middle of the floor is a huge annoyance actually. I think I may forgive a few of these things because it reminds me of my favorite TV show, I'll pay more attention to the shitty sound next time but so far I haven't noticed it being so bad. I loved the crowd at the shows I have been to so far but that always changes with the act. Bartender wise I have had nothing but good experiences so far...

I think my interest in Air peaked in 1998. The two times I've seen them in the 00's were really pretty disappointing for me.

Yea, I've only gone to see forgettable acts like Air, Blonde Redhead, Spoon, etc at Bimbo's... I'm actually kinda glad that BR in particular started playing at the Warfield.. 8 of the times I've seen them in SF were at Bimbo's.

Thanks, really appreciate the list. Ruby Skye?

If that dance floor deal works, it will be a big hit at Burning Man, eh.

Not to be a downer they've tried this in Europe years ago, in Netherlands and UK. Don't be fooled by promises of "sustainable" clubs in the sense that they're self-sufficient. Those dancefloor power generating things only generate a tiny fraction of the power necessary for even a small club. Even the club in the Netherlands that was the first to start this is only using it to drive low-power LED lighting. Something on the order of a few hundred Watts. That's barely enough to run one proper single stage light, much less tens of thousands of Watts for even a small sound system. They were mainly a gimmick, not even remotely cost-effective for the amount of actual power you generate.

Does that mean it's a bad idea to harness at least some of the potential free power? Probably not, but in the end I'll bet the resources necessary to build and maintain such a system outweigh the ecological advantage. I'd love if folks with that kind of money kept at it though in case it one day becomes feasible.

Of course if anyone here has evidence otherwise I'd be eager to hear it.

They've done similar things like bike-powered parties in Dolores Park a few times years ago, where people roll up and use stationary bikes to power a couple small speakers. That should give you an idea of the scale of such an endeavor. To make a dance floor capable of transforming kinetic energy into electricity you need a LOT of movement, not just movement ON the floor, the floor itself would have to move a shitload. And it would necessarily rob the dancers of a lot more energy. I would imagine it would be like dancing on dry beach sand. Imagine a bunch of guidos trying to grind on a random skanks on a squishy dance floor. And this still come even remotely close to powering a club

I feel like its one of the most loud and the most clear system in SF. Can anyone throw out a few venue names that are known for having the best systems? Id be very excited to check out somewhere new espt if they have a sytem worth hearing. Thanks!

Mezzanine has technically the best sound system in SF.
Here's the tech specs
http://www.mezzaninesf.com/tech_rider.html
a line array AND a funktion one for DJ setups. That's huge.

That said, any particular band may make it sound like crap, but potential-wise it's pound-for-pound the best system in SF for a mid-scale club. Not sure what Ruby Skye has.

Re: Ruby Skye, from wikipedia:

According to FOH Online, Ruby Skye's sound system consists of a 5-way EAW Avalon DC1 system that has been modified by JK Sound to use EAW KF series drivers. The system includes eight EAW DC1 three-way cabinets, six DCT2 supertweeter arrays and 20 DCS2 subwoofers capable of 140db of bass energy. It was the first nightclub in the world to implement Lake Contour 26 loudspeaker processors for audio management.

I really hate Ruby Skye, so my impressions are biased. But I feel like sound there is OK, not great. Their "best lighting in the city" is just fucking cheesy to me.

That said, when we were there for Sasha, I was noticing for the first time how awesome the actual interior of the building is. Not the Ruby Skye decor but the physical aspects of the interior like the weird (plaster) busts on the upper level. I guess the building belonged to a fraternal organization dedicated to bigotry/keeping immigrants out of California.

I've only been to Ruby Skye twice, and I thought it has a good sound system, but so do most places in SF that I have been.

I agree Heidi, its a cool building. Although I got glitter bombed there and if I wasn't so loaded I might have been a little pissed that I had glitter all over me. I looked like I just had lapdances from 10 dirty strippers at the same time.

But its fun to be able to tell friends from the east coast that I went to the club in Social Network. I'm a cheeseball.

I think the sound at the Warfield was the best I have heard in SF, with the Indy coming up second.

That's a fuckton of sound equipment regardless of the overall wattage, but I would think the acoustics of that huge fucking place might make a place like Mezzanine sound better. The more you can baffle the bass with actual bodies on the floor, the better it sounds (this is why Mighty sounds like shit unless it's packed).

They play a lot shitty progressive at Ruby Skye tho so I'm not sure how much it matters.

"And the second scene that was difficult was the Ruby Skye sequence, in which Mark Zuckerberg has a business meeting with Sean Parker, who’s played by Justin Timberlake. It’s in this loud club called Ruby Skye, which is an actual club in San Francisco and it’s one of those clubs that has the loud, throbbing subwoofer with the house music blasting on 11. David, again, wanted to have this music overpower the scene and have the dialogue just on the edge of intelligibility. So those were very challenging scenes for us to mix and to work into the soundtrack."

blu-ray notes are not gospel. Someone could have made a mistake (that the Ruby Skye folks were complicit in or at least dare not correct). Feasible scenario might be there was an contract to use Ruby Skye but it became an issue, so they agreed to get a mention. Once it's a rumor on the internet it can quickly become fact.

Either way it would be a far stretch to make that club the same one in the vid.

So why would the DVD have said it's Ruby Skye? Because it's the "Ruby Skye scene", as it it's supposed to represent Ruby Skye. Nobody would want to readily admit that the scene is filmed not where it's supposed to take place. Rumor has it a lot of moves are made in LA, and it's more believable that they would make this shot there (not to mention it was probably shitloads cheaper).

btw this makes the kid's "Sorry, I was just looking at the architecture" comment completely hilarious. This now sounds like a obvious desperate attempt to make one think this is supposed to be Ruby Skye.

I don't think anyone went out of their way to delibrately mislead.

As far as the titular aspect of the scene, they're just trying to fit the story. It's "the Ruby Skye scene" because that's where it supposedly took place in the true story.

In that interview you quoted the guy called it "the ruby skye sequence", which again, was what he saw the scene titled. I don't think he gave a crap what the name of the physical club was.

The logistics of actually filming that at Ruby Skye would probably have been outrageous. Much easier to find a club in LA (probably with a standing relationship with a studio). Plus that other club was set up for a much better shot than they could have gotten at Ruby Skye.

"An Evening with Peter Gabriel"

Following the success of last year's sell out concerts Peter Gabriel returns to the USA and Canada for a 12 date tour with the New Blood orchestra. On the last outing Gabriel redrew the works of Lou Reed, David Bowie, Radiohead....this time out he applies the orchestral makeover to his own back catalogue. The stunning musical backdrop leaves Gabriel's vocals centre-stage and bare, stripped of the usual rock'n'roll clothing, no loud guitars or booming drums to hide behind. Raw and soul-baring yet passionate and often joyous, Gabriel's classic songs here take new shape and extra meaning.

Holy fuck that was insane. He combined Swoon/Yeah/My Moon My Man, played a couple songs i hadn't heard that were great, and damn his mixing always impresses. granted i'm not that old but i've never seen a club stay 100% packed like that till 3pm. I don't give a crap if he doesnt bring any lights to coachella I am fucking excited to hear a 'live set'.

Housemeister kinda sucked though - played some good songs but there was no flow and I wasn't really feeling it. D.I.M. was really good but also kind of forgettable.

Was anyone else really bugged out by the strobe lights? They were way too intense. Maybe i was too dehydrated (I was drinking/not rolling) but it got to the point where I was keeping my eyes closed for parts of it.

Man, Girl Talk tore shit up at the Fox last night! I was so shit faced though that I feel asleep in my front row seat, and didn't get to see his whole set. I had way to many Racer 5 IPAs and Stoli shots.

As I said in the other thread, anyone that wasn't at Boys Noize last night made the wrong choice. Amazing set, he tore the place apart. Can't fucking wait for Friday April 15.

It's definitely not the best crowd to see a show. If you go planning to get drunk and eat oysters and spend a lot of cash doing so, then it's a fine event. If you go expecting a normal concert, it's far from it.

Aw man... Mix Master Mike was the first dj i saw live ever, in montreaux at the ripe young age of 18, the summer after high school on our jazz band's trip there... also the first night i smoked a cigarette. Seeing him again would have been such a trip. $30+ is crap D:

Brad, Andrew..do either of you know if there is a rollover date for that Death Cab show (i.e. Friday)? That seems logical given their popularity and it being a Thurs show and all. I'm going to try during the pre-sale on Friday, but this one will likely be a super tough buy.

That fan presale is on Wednesday (or Thurs). The one on Friday appears to be something separate.

Fucking dumb considering there's, what, 1k tix total for this thing. How would you like to have paid for that lame fan club shit and then be skunked out within 30 seconds, then be skunked out again on Friday only to be left holding your dick in your hand come the public onsale on Saturday. You know it's going to happen.

I liked Narrow Stairs pretty much (there's always some DCfC songs that grate on me). I Will Possess Your Heart turned out to be a monster live. Speaking of which, I was a pretty solid DCfC hater prior to seeing them at the Greek several years ago ('06? I went for Spoon). I walked away from that show with an open mind. Then, their '09 Greek set really impressed me (mostly in the musicianship...their bass players is a beast). They really worked that crowd.

EDIT: ha, so true, Edward!

DCFC Coachella 2004 was pretty lame imo...

GeezrRckr
03-22-2011, 04:59 PM
(^ouch. Too many choices, eh.)

Yeah, their band name is likely a large part of the reason why I probably put them in the lame category early on. Aside from that, I just think that they've become a better band over time...which is nice for a change. At least that's my experience with them.

But, Gibbard has one of those voices that polarizes people into two camps. And, who knows..now that he's got the uber-hollywood thing going...they could go the route of Muse and get all pop-tardy now. I really don't care...they're not that high on my radar and there's plenty of other bands.
