Totally. I haven't seen Mighty that crowded in a long time too.

It was JAMMED. God damn the vibe in there was amazing. Frankie Knuckles played from 12:30 - 4:30, and the place was pretty packed up until 3 or so. That was one of the best nights I've ever had, seriously. Covered in sweat, getting hit on by bears (lols), house music all night long... yessssss.

02-28-2011, 10:41 PM
ah, I never miss a Patton show. But for Rammstein, it must be done.

Just looked, some Australian duo. Haven't listened, but it's described as thrash/grindcore drums and piano. Could be interesting, or a nightmare. Or an interesting nightmare.

Too bad it falls on the same night, I would have been down.

dorkfish
03-01-2011, 08:12 AM
It's some duo from Australia that Patton discovered. He claims that they were one of tthe only bands he listened to for the last few years outside of Italian opera stuff that Mondo Cane inspired.

Xtreme Chopsticks.

Not sure if I like this project. I love thrash/grind and love piano music, but the crash cymbal completely overpowers the piano on the recording. Patton might make it sound great or overly abrasive (which is kinda his thing anyway). I will probably debate this until the day of the show, then decide to go.

They are no Menomena, but loud, big riffs, German, industrial + giant, fiery, silly props makes for a good time. What can I say...they have been a long-time guilty pleasure. Plus, it's been 10 years since they were here last. I couldn't pass it up.

But....fuck you Mike Patton. You just had to do your avant-garde sideshow on the same day.

For those of you going to Baths, this is a review of one of the opening acts:

So my band played a show with Gobble Gobble last night. They are doing a 4 months long tour hitting up pretty much every single city in North America. You all have to go see them, no matter what. One of the most insane and fun shows I have ever seen. I don't really know how classify them... but they are synthy-electo-glitch type stuff are their shows are basically a really fucked up rave that paradoy's an actual rave. It is hard to describe, but they are far too good of a time to miss.

So, everyone go see them when they come to your town.

I don't think so regarding buying tickets. I only listened to the second Dirty South LP once so I can't really pass judgment on it. I'm more into his Infinity + 1 mix and I always have fun at his shows.

If you're sleeping on Low End Theory, you're sleeping, period. There's nothing more exciting going on in Cali music right now, and SF is fucking spoiled because the club they do it at here is 100x better than the Airliner in LA. The local hip hop/bass music scene here isn't exactly bursting at the seams with talent so LET's night is a can't-miss.

Probably. What time do you think he'll go on? I'm assuming he'll get the headlining slot starting around 12-1, but I've got to work in Oakland until about 11 or so, so I'm trying to figure my night out. Plus my friend can't get in without me because I bought our tickets (lack of foresight on my part there).

I imagine FlyLo will either go from 1-2:30, or Low End will do their rotational splits where everyone plays 2 sets and he'd do like 12 and 2. Either way, you want to see some of all the residents, so bring a change of clothes and fly there after work.

Oh and I think Eventbrite will let you change the name on your will call if you don't wanna leave your homie hanging.

There are many issues with the Regency....inconsistency being the biggest one for me. I've been to wonderfully-sounding shows there (Fever Ray, Broken Bells, Killing Joke) and awfully-sounding shows (but those were more pre-2010). Security (at the door) are most often total assholes, yet lax on other nights (Killing Joke, for example...you would have thought of all nights, *that* would have been a night to be checking for shit). The one constant is it is very loud....always.

Of all the venues in town, I feel the corporate hand there more than any other. I wouldn't mourn for a second, if it were to be shut down.

headed to the Regency next Tues. for Yann Tiersen and wishing he was playing Great American Music Hall instead. Though I'm happy for him if there is a bigger draw this year. GV runs the Warfield and Regency and that's their hold in SF. The drink prices at both of those venues is annoying. I love GAMH and $5 for quality beers is the ticket (and they are still making $$$). As for security at the Regency, well, they are the strictest I've encountered in attending shows in SF over the past 3 years. But can you blame them? They are in CYA mode after shootings/fights. I never have anything to hide, but its just sort of crazy how worked up they can get.

So I went to BASE at Vessel last night to see S.E.C.T. and even though it's totally the type of swanky place I like to avoid, I had a lot of fun and will definitely go back for other upcoming BASE parties. The club was really crowded when I got there but I soon found out that that was because of the Gaming Developer's Convention. So many drunk gamer geeks hit on me. There was also a mix of people and tourists who just wanted to "club." One guy tried talking/dancing with me with the "Man, don't you wish they were playing hip-hop?" line. But it's free with RVSP, the sound was awesome, there was plenty of room on the dance floor, and the drinks weren't crazy expensive.

Loco Dice will be there on 3/17.

Apparently the Warfield's Box Office person is having car trouble this morning, which accounts for why I've been standing in the rain for over an hour waiting to purchase my Iron & Wine tickets. Hopefully the Box Office has an allotment of tix to sell that is independent of the tix that have been selling online while I've been standing here.

Edit:

The guy ended up being an hour and a half late opening the Box Office. In addition to that crapola, the Box Office charged me the facility fee on top of the Box Office fee.

I did ask him if they generally held an allotment of tix specifically for sale for each show at the box office. He said that if they knew a show was going to sell out quickly then they would set some tix aside. They also set tickets aside for the box office when a show gets close to selling out.

Hate to bring up old shit, but Flying Lotus was pretty awesome. Never been to a 'dubstep party' or anything resembling a LET party before. I went for Flylo, like everyone else did. I got a completely different message and vibe from Flylo than EVERYONE else. Like 5 minutes into his set I felt like I got what all the talk/buzz/hype is about. His music just made sense and felt right together. I think most who have experienced him live can understand what that means.

Place was crowded as fuck. I guess the "secret" is out about that party. I also met some boardies! I think Geno, Chia and someone else. Good eye whoever spotted me! Too bad it was so late into the party. I left just before 3am.

He sure does. So, do you know what that pad is that he's working during during his show? I'm fairly certain it's not a Kaoss pad...or is it? Whatever he uses, I felt his set showed off the best skills of the evening. Just sick.

Having him and GLK as the residents makes going to those worth it regardless of the guest they bring. I'm hoping this falls early in the month in April so we can have a fun blowout before Coachella.

But don't expect a band like Arctic Monkeys to be part of an OSL after show. It's almost always undercards at the small venues around town + an OSL-branded show or two w/ acts not on the OSL roster.

I thought the entire place was open too, by the end of the night. They had the mezzanine level above the main floor open, the upstairs room next door (which was not crowded at all later in the night), and late in the night the downstairs (basement?) level was also open.

I am a bit agoraphobic, and I think the crowdedness would have freaked me out. We had an OK spot for FlyLo, it was more trying to move around leaving the room that was a mess. But I would give it a try again, mostly because I'm hoping that without Flying Lotus it won't be so crowded.

Yeah I think it's sold out on Groovetickets but not TM. I have work Saturday morning so my tomfoolery will only be at half-speed.

Does anybody know what the capacity at 103 is by the way?

depends on how many rooms are open. Just the main room, probably something like 700-800. The whole place is up near 2000 at least.

7:55 Destructo
8:45 Fake Blood
10:30 Simian Mobile Disco

The show isn't 21+. Right? This comment is making me freak out now - i'm pretty sure I read somewhere it wasn't, but now I can't find it. I'm over 21 but other people who are going with me aren't.

But yeah, even though Mumbai Science is only getting 45 minutes (wtf), I'm digging the two rooms which lets us get 1.5 hour sets.

Fox shows usually aren't 21+ and the tickets mention nothing, but "The Den" is a bar. So I'm not sure how that works.

You have to have a 21 + wristband to get into the bar. Unless they won't be serving alcohol that night. WHICH WILL MAKE ME MAD.

HARD tends not to skimp on production for anything.

Too many people at Low End but it was still a great night, I'll be glad to shed a little of the FlyLo crowd in April. Great lineup too, and don't sleep on Dibia$e.

Trey put on a memorable show on Sat night. Could have done without the smelly dude who hadn't showered in days losing his shit next to me but that was expected and tons of people were freaking out. Pretty awesome to see. The winner was a dude who was using the handrail as a dancing prop and jump kicking over it. He killed me.

Trey sounded great solo. He is amazingly clean with the acoustic and all the band members, especially the trumpet girl, killed it. All four covers were spot on [Hey Ya, Clint Eastwood, Sultans of Swing, Black Dog].

Um....

HARD has the shittiest production ever. Most of the time it's just lights flashing HARD! HARD! HARD! Gary doesn't even want to invest in solid production because he wants to disassociate his events from "raves." There was like zero production at HARD Summer last year and every other event I've been to or seen videos of have been laughable.

I've been to shows at the Regency where it wasn't fully sold out and they have security people up in the balcony area looking down on people and busting anyone they see smoking or drinking from a flask. Then again, i've been to sold out, or nearly sold out, shows there and the security don't do shit.

Wow, I haven't listened to these guys in forever. Are they any good live? It's really hard for me to get excited for anything post-rock after the GYBE show. I just can't see anything, other than Mogwai, being able to come remotely close to how good that was.

EITS - They are quite good live but honestly I've not made an effort to see them more than a couple of times... I'm kinda waiting for them to be on another festival lineup.

Joey, as stated, when it's not crowded, they most certainly bust people who are not being discreet. As long as you're discreet and are in the thick of the crowd, you should be fine. I can't think of any show I've been to there where people weren't smoking.

^I'll be at Yann tonight with the wifey and some friends. The wifey dragged me to his show last year at GAMH and I walked away a fan. Had no idea what I was in for and it was just a really, really good show.

As for the smoke... just step outside and down the little side alley. Light it up and stare at the Banksy on the wall.

Ive brought a small stash with me to Regency shows. Ive smoked inside during shows a few times, but its def not allowed. I think their biggest concern is not that you bring pot to their shows, its the smoking inside the venue. Ive never had a problem at any venue if I just step outside for a quick bowl/joint/smoke.

I guess it depends how you define "production." Minimal design isn't necessarily skimping.

HARD Summer didn't need over the top production. The best acts were on the smaller stage anyway.

SOM will boot you for this. 1015 was checking people in the smoking section but I think that's only because the police were coming down on them, they usually don't trip.

I stepped outside to puff at least 3 or 4 times at LET last week and a couple times at the True Skool/Black Thought show in January. I've never had a problem with my smoke at 1015. Mighty, Mezzanine, Independent, DNA Lounge, Slims, Club 6, 330 Rich and Rickshaw Stop have never stopped or booted me for bringing anything. At most they just remind me that the smoking section is outside. Never been to SOM.

Looks like Todd Terje will be at SOM bar on 3/18 - venue is meh but the king of funk/disco edits is a can't miss.

It seems as though twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall, SF is inundated w/ an inordinate amount of big (not to be confused w/ quality) EDM acts over the course of a single weekend.

Diggers, Boys Noize, Stacy Pullen, Matt Tolfrey, Carlo Lio, Todd Terje, PVD are all in town on either 3/18 or 3/19 - guess this is one of those weekends. The prospect of catching Stacy Pullen at Mighty before heading to SOMA for a late night Tolfrey set is particularly appealing.
