That's the one. Once you're 21 you'll have to come up to SF for a weekend of techno. You should come to a Kontrol event at The End Up....they brought MAGDA here in December.

You haven't picked up on this yet? fikus & his wife like almost nothing that goes down around here and are also a bit fickle in their likes/dislikes. :)

I don't love 103 Harriet at all but there's not really anything 'wrong' with it as a venue, to me. The sound is actually way too loud for my comfortable and too bass heavy, but that's not enough to keep me away. I just need to remember to put my earplugs back in my bag. :P

For those of us that are not planning on going to Chella now, what bands do you guys expect to be stopping by San Fran?

Can I expect a PJ Harvey or Black Keys show at the Fox or Fillmore? That would be nice! Or maybe even at the Greek, which would be better.

I would like a Duck Sauce drop by too.

I'm sure the Strokes will be swinging by sometime as well. I really enjoyed their set at OSL and I have a good feeling about the new songs.

Its so nice to live in a town that gets more than enough live music and doesn't force us to spend $1,000 on a festival experience that might not be up to snuff this year.

Dear STS9 Valued Fans,
It is with heavy hearts and eternal optimism for the future that we announce the cancellation of STS9′s Winter Tour 2011 dates in February 2011 and March 2011, while our brother, friend, and bass player David Murphy begins undergoing timely and necessary cancer treatment following STS9′s Mayan Holidaze performances this weekend.

I'm fine with getting to Mezzanine earlier though, I just didn't want to end up hanging out by myself there, or I'll end up drinking too much.

I've got a Ticketmaster related story and question.

When ordering my HARD tix from TM, there was a shipping address snafu and TM ended up sending me 2 pairs of tix to HARD. The bar codes are different on all four tix, but the row/box and seat no. are the same for both pairs.

Did I get lucky and receive 4 pairs of tix or will the bar codes refer back to the original pair and prevent entry into the show for the second pair?

TM never said that they were sending a replacement set of tix, just that they had changed the shipping address. Both sets of tix arrived on the same day, with the correct address in the envelope windows, but the attached receipt of one of the pairs has our old Seattle address.

GeezrRckr
01-19-2011, 10:54 PM
hmm...interesting quandary. if they're all floor tix, than the locations are of no consequence...it's all about the bar codes. if those are different, i think you've scored.

the only way they'd not work is if, somehow, they did some sort of auditing and realized that they sent out two extra. even then, i doubt they'd know which 2 were sent out.

A few years back for Rod y Gab, ticketmaster called to tell me my ticket was returned at my address. and that they would hold my ticket at will call. The next day the ticket arrived in the mail so I gave my ticket to a friend who went in another line before me. My ticket definitely made a reject noise but the ticket taker didnt even flinch and I got in no problem. I had my receipt just in case to argue.

I think if your friends go separately in before and you have a receipt print out for a hard tix in hand, you have a solid argument despite the ticket already been scanned. It could end up as a scene but could be worth the $.

I've been to RS probably a half-dozen times, and my experience has always been that the people w/out advance tix get in faster than those with them. Almost everyone has advance tickets, so that line sits while they scan/wait, etc.

The people without tickets walk straight to the front of their line (because it's empty) and go right in. The cynical side of me says it's because they already have the advance tix $$ so who cares if they have to wait - but if there's a wait for walk-up, people might think twice and not fork over their cash.

I stopped buying advance tix because of the setup. All that said - haven't been since Markus Schulz last year, so maybe something's changed...

chiapet

TM will change the barcodes, but still be able to detect double entrance on one purchase. I know this because I got barred at the Muse show in Oakland last year after purchasing a ticket from someone on Craigslist. After getting turned away at the door (being told "that ticket has already be used"), I went to the ticket window. They told me it was in-fact a legit ticket, but it is possible the original purchaser contacted TM and told them they didn't get their tix in the mail. TM would then print new tix and mail them (diff. bar codes). But what threw me off when I was told this is why weren't the other tix (the ones that the original purchaser supposedly did not receive) voided?

So, long story short... if you try this, just be sure you go in first. Let your friends who aren't paying a dime try with the 2nd set. Give them your reciept, etc. and let them try to argue. If they get barred, then they can try to buy tickets at the door or from someone with an extra.

chiapet
01-20-2011, 09:15 AM
Yea I am 100% certain Ticketmaster is "supposed to" void the first set of tickets. (Side note, I don't think they "void" them, they just make them appear used). As I said, how consistently they've done this, I have no idea.

I had a situation where I was certain my ticket never arrived, asked Ticketmaster to reissue the ticket. They did. Meanwhile I found the original ticket, and managed to confuse which ticket was the old, cancelled one, and the new valid one. I went to the show with the cancelled one and it took a significant amount of arguing to gain entry because the barcode came up as already used.

Yup, I'm going and I think at least a couple of other people from the board will be going too.

For a hotel, I think you should be able to find something closer to the 12th Street BART station (about 6-7 blocks from the venue). You might check with feather, I'm pretty sure they had a reasonably cheap room nearby for the Chemical Brothers show. There's a Marriott Courtyard that's a little over $100 and a few places (that I don't know anything about) that are under $100.

I'm not sure... have been working since 6AM, haven't had breakfast or lunch, and am super exhausted from this week, (can you tell I need to go out tonight???) so I was thinking of taking a nap after work.

Originally I was thinking 9 (free vodka!!). 10 sounds better but I don't want to wait in a line forever.

It was good seeing everybody last night at the Dirtybird (pre)party. The Mezz ended up getting pretty packed, but the crowd wasn't filled with dbags so that was cool. I really enjoyed Claude's set, his new material is pretty good. Also, we got to talk to and catch up with Worthy, which was nice.

How Sasha last night?

How was Low End Theory at Harriet?

Fikus, you went for NYE, right?

Sasha was good! I wouldn't say he blew my mind or anything, but I was impressed. I tended not to give him much credit (I pretty much think of him as a has-been) but did want to check him out after that Glasto set, and I definitely have to eat my words. There were a couple of points where he lost me a bit (got a tiny bit boring for me), but really that was maybe 10-15 min total out of the 2+ hours I saw. I had fun, and wished I'd been feeling better so I could dance harder.

Ruby Skye is *almost* as bad as I'd remembered. :)

and it was great to see everyone at Mezzanine, I would definitely be up for future Dirtybird parties in the future. I'm trying to be more responsible about how much money I spend on concerts/going out, so a free/cheap night that happened to have great DJs would be good!

Factory is alright. In the two times that I've been there, the crowd wasn't bad and the venue itself is pretty cool. It has multiple rooms, levels and bars. Though, the sound system(s) are just okay.

Thankfully, everyone left the main stage at 1 to go try and cram into the crappy side room for Skrillex, so I had tons of room on the main floor to rock out with my friends for NERO. Didn't expect to have enough space to dance for that set, so that was a nice surprise. Also a nice surprise, his track selection. After seeing a slightly altered version of the essential mix at TAO, I was expecting similar, but the first half hour of the set was all different tracks not from the essential that I hadn't heard before, and when he did start mixing tracks from the essential, he switched up the order and mixes a bit. Eastern Jam layered with I Need Air was my favorite part of the set.

Question, does NERO ever perform as a duo, or do they just bank off the name to place twice as many shows for the same money?

Oh, and do DJs not pay attention to or discuss their sets with the other opening DJs? Both Beaver and NERO played Sabotage, which is an awesome song, but I don't need to hear it dropped twice in the same night. They both played I Need Air too, but NERO layering it with Eastern Jam made it way awesomer.

After hearing that Nero basically played their essential mix at TAO I couldn’t have been more excited to see them (1/2 of them) at Wobbleland. Now is when I thought I would be writing how disappointed I was that they only played about 10% of the mix buuuuuuuut I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Like mentioned above his track selection was amazing. Half the tracks he played were totally out of no where that I would never expect to hear from them/him and it totally worked. He had the entire room going nuts and doing whatever he wanted us to do. My favorite was some crazy Justice DANCE remix that blew the doors off any remix of it I have ever heard before including mstrkrft’s. That track was by far my favorite of the night which is saying a lot because I love both their streets remixes.

If you ever have a chance to check them out I would for sure make it happen. Hopefully what we were hearing was him testing out their new album because id love to get my hands on it.

My favorite party of the year...

Tickets are 16 bucks now... going up to 22 probably today when the "early bunny" tix sell out.

http://chinesenewyearsf.eventbrite.com/

edit: tea lounge..yessss

fuck yes! I've only been to one of these but it was seriously ridiculous... the tea lounge omg! Warm tea at 4am in a decorated room playing beats, what's more awesome than that? I got in on the early bunny but $25 is worth it for this party for sure.

A story from last year:

I don't remember what the outgoing year was, but last year was the year of the tiger. They do a big show at midnight with drummers and dancers and there were two big floats, one for the outgoing animal and one tiger. It's big, like the size of a suburban, made out of scaffolding on the inside so you can ride it. After the performance they park the tiger near the stage in the main room and you can kind of hop onto it. I jump over from the stage and it's me and three or four other people just jamming on this tiger in the middle of the dancefloor... a girl jumps on, yells "I AM SOOOOO HIGH" at me and then takes off her shirt. I had no idea wtf to do, it was like a scene from a movie or something.

GO TO THIS PARTY

Has anyone posted the Dada Life show at Ruby Skye yet? I looked back to the beginning of 2011, and as far as I know the show was announced within the last week. Or I missed it somehow on the website last week.

Dada Life, Ruby Skye, Feb 10
Presale's at $25 right now

They were good at Spookfest, but I was distracted (and sober) so I'd like to see them again.

ahahahaha... I totally remember that girl.

edit: this year will be better for one reason at least. Since the Pantyraid show, all the shows that have been put on by An-ten-nae and/or Raindance have had new security. Chillers. All they do is clean up, check on the obviously fucked up people, and turn the other way if there's smoke in the air. It's great. Before, I saw a handful of people get kicked out of every show. Haven't seen one with the new crew.

condensation from people's sweat gathers on the ceiling...and well, surface tension of water is only so strong....so gravity runs its course.

edit: I've only seen it once (SoD 06/07) and I had no idea what it was until my friend told me...

I was like, "dude, is it raining and leaking through the roof on my face?"

he said, "haha, not quite..."

I dont think anybody else went but Black Thought gave one hell of a performance last night at the True Skool show. I didnt realize he and J. Period are only doing four shows right now of this live mixtape project and they did two of them in the bay area. 1015 was fine. Seemed like the crowd skewed a tad bit older; felt like an older crowd to me.

I had the most wretched tasting vodka tonic ever at Som Bar. I didn't even stay for Kode 9. Was he good?

zimmy1222
01-31-2011, 09:12 AM
Well, after we were either forced to stay inside or leave for good at like 2, we were a little over it. But, he was pretty good, played more house than hyperdub, I was dancing. Nothing special enough to keep me locked in a shitty bar though.

we had some delicious Jameson Presses that they make with some special tonic of their own. and a tasty cadillac margarita... still, nothing special enough to get me back there though.

Im always amazed at how much cred Deftones have considering that there's not much separating them from a lot of other late 90s nümetal that people are embarrassed to admit having liked.

They are slightly more intelligent, but thats not a hard thing to accomplish in that field.

I feel like it's the California ones of that type that are given too much cred.

So who actually saw Kode9?

I stayed until 3 AM, can't believe so many people left, but that bar was trash. Security kicked half the show out for smoking weed in the SMOKING AREA. Where else in San Francisco is this ever a problem?

Kode9 does such a great job mixing wax, one of the few left that uses it.
