I would be too distracted laughing uproariously at that dude's hair to even notice how awful or good the music is. I'll be at Mighty fending off sleazeballs.

speaking of Saturday, i just bought my ticket to see the Melvins at GAMH. it's an "evening with" so should be pretty outstanding. can't believe how long it's been since i've seen those crazy guys.

I went to that same show last year and it was epic. really really loud though, I recommend getting some earplugs

I'm interested to check out Jonas.

I am too, but I'm going to STS9 at the Fox that night. Not sure how late that will put me at Mezzanine, but my plan is to go directly from the Fox to Mezz, and if STS9 plays for *hours*, I'll leave early. Hoping that puts me at the Mezz by 11:30 or midnight at the very latest.

That kind of reminds me, Salah, some time we need to go to 1984 at Cat Club. It's on Thursdays and is free if you get there before 9:30 and has $1 wells until 10PM :cat

2/3 - JFK of MSTRKRFT w/ support from NISUS (blasthaus) @ Mighty

Early bird tix here (http://jfkatmighty.eventbrite.com/) ($10).

(has anyone been to any of this DJ sets? only $10, and at Mighty...hmmm)

Erika and I just purchased tix to this. The $10 deal is still in effect. Even though this is a DJ set, I'm sure it will be filled with very dance worthy electro goodness.

We'll be getting our tix to HARD soon too.

I don't get the allure of the HARD line up at all.

For us, it's all about SMD live. I don't really know anything about the undercard, so hopefully they are at least passing fair. Plus, I enjoy seeing shows at the Fox.

01-07-2011, 01:03 PM
well, i hope that works out for you, man. the last time i saw their live set (Mezz) it was pretty underwhelming. part of it was that their last album was really lacking (imo). but, the first two times i saw them, though....man they were good (Coachella and first Mezz show)! i thought about giving them another shot, but i have to hear some new music, first, before dropping more coin on them.

fikus222
01-07-2011, 01:36 PM
We've never seen an underwelming live set by SMD. We've seen them live in SF, Seattle and Portland. We were at that first Mezz show, the one that had Cut//Copy opening, and that was probably our least favorite set by them. Though, that night was insanely good; Goldfrapp (Warfield) > Cut//Copy > SMD.

SMDs new album is best when you listen to the continuous mix version.

I'm on the fence about Hard, Egyptrixxx and Fake Blood are both great but the combination of the 11:30 curfew and the all ages thing make it kind of a bummer in some ways...

BlackSwan
01-07-2011, 01:46 PM
SMD have a couple good songs and their lights are kind of interesting, but I don't think they are an act that I could get excited about seeing again. I was at that first SMD show and it was pretty good, but Cut Copy were 100 times better. This line up needs another good act to make it worth $30. Maybe I'm just getting more picky on the shows I spend money on... I dunno.

Are we sure that there is really going to be a 11:30 curfew? (The only evidence to the contrary is that the ticket listing says the box office will be open until 1AM). I'm not sure it would even be a good thing, if it did go later, there would be a mass exodus to BART.

Have you guys not listened to Delicacies by SMD? I love it. As for the HARD show, I was mostly excited for the triple-whammy of Fake Blood, Tensnake, and SMD for $30.

Whoever went to HARD this summer: was the all age crowd even a problem?

I've had fun at SMD shows. Not saying it's great music, just fun.

I'm actually mildly interested in everyone on the lineup. The lil bit of Egyptrixx I've heard sounds intriguing, and I'll enjoy Destructo since y'all know I will dance to anything that is even vaguely disco.

Yeah, my friends went to the HARD with Crystal Castles and said the kids were a little obnoxious and I had the same experience at Bassnectar. It wasn't entirely terrible and it didn't really get in the way of enjoying the show but it's always nicer to rave with people 21+ than high schoolers.

As for the curfew, I'm pretty sure all Fox shows end early. Bassnectar ended at 12 and that's the latest I've ever been there, it's a combination of people needing to get onto BART and that all ages shows can't run too late (I think).

He toured The Slew with a band. In addition to KK, the band consisted of two former members of Wolfmother playing drums and keys/guitar and another guy on turntables. I saw the Seattle show and it was pretty good. Not great, but entertaining nonetheless. I most recently saw Kid Koala open for Z-Trip and it was highly entertaining. He was joking with the crowd and taking requests. He also did a 2x4 with Z-trip.

I'm sure a 5 hour set would be worth seeing and will run the full gambit of what Kid Koala can do.

Bootie was unexpectedly a ton of fun. Mostly because the DJ group SQURRRL was spinning some awesome tracks upstairs. The main floor was so incredibly crowded....seriously, a fire hazard. Some of the mash-ups I heard were actually enjoyable.

More importantly, can I get a list of who is coming to Sasha?

I guess Kid Koala got the idea for the Slew while hanging out in Burien WA. He explained the genesis of the Slew concept during shout outs to friends of his in the audience. The Seattle show was also the first US show of the tour and almost didn't happen because the US Border guards didn't want to let Kid Koala into the country. The tour bus was held at the BC/WA border for 5 hours before finally letting them in.

^cool story, bro*

so, after listening to The Twelves Essential Mix again yesterday, i think i'm a lock to go see them again. those guys are just so fucking good with, both, the way they remix songs and the songs they pick to remix. if they end up dropping a bit too many DP samples again, i will forgive them for that and focus on the other good shit they're doing. i've got to believe that they will have some new stuff to showcase...which makes me incredibly excited with anticipation.

K&D. Then, I went over and caught a song of LD. Went back over and we sort of congregated and made our way over that way for the last few songs and stood in the back until the set ended and then made our way to the Silent Disco (during the fiver). Though, I understand the confusion because we were in about the same spot for Miike Snow.

Aha, we watched them before heading over for Black Moth Super Rainbow.

I did this exact same thing at that Sasquatch. Deerhoof was really good that day, and that was the closest I got up to the main stage which was nice. Then headed over for the frothy goodness that is BMSR.

That was probably my favorite day at the fest with Deerhoof and BSMR leading into some Grizzly Bear and Santigold. Then chilling by the comedy tent for awhile. Natasha Leggero was pretty funny, doing bits about riding the bus in L.A. Then she did a dance off with a girl from the crowd who literally danced Natasha off the stage.

Then ended the day with some Girl Talk, Tobacco, and Chromeo. Ah, the memories.

I'm really interested in popping my Aesop Rock cherry. Will he be worth the $26 ticket price?

Interested in Trey Anastasio Band. what do you think fikus?

I read up on this tour and it is indeed interesting. Trey will be preforming a solo-acoustic set in addition to a full band electric set. This tour hearkens back to the first Trey Band tour of '99, which my friends and I drove from Phoenix to Denver to see for my 21st B-Day. The Denver show was the furthest west the tour got and was also the opening show of the Denver Fillmore. The first set saw Trey performing Phish songs on acoustic guitar and grand piano. The second set Trey and band performed Phish songs as well Trey originals and some covers (Ooh Child, I can See Clearly Now and Voodoo Child). A great way to spend my 21st B-Day. I still have the tour poster on my wall:

Tix for the Fox show are $40 before fees and a pre-sale starts tomorrow at 7am PST:

Having said all of that, I don't know if I can swing it :(

Aesop Rocks the shit
his treasure island set was my favorite of the day in 08. I've been holding my breath for a legit SF show ever since and I'm incredibly excited that its three days after my birthday. I'd say he's well worth the money

for me yeah. i don't go to many shows more than 20 bucks...

and hip hop shows generally bore me to tears... maybe i'll skip this now that i'm thinking about it.

OMD is up on the Mezzanine homepage now. $29.50 advance tickets and...$30 tickets at the door. Lulz.

Big Boi was a lot of fun when I saw him at the Grand, but that was mostly due to the Outkast songs. I'd recommend it if you haven't seen him before.

GeezrRckr

does he perform with a band?

(boy, the board is acting all kinds of whack today)

wmgaretjax

if he was playing with a band, i'd probably be in... but i've already seen him do his thing with just a dj.

GeezrRckr
01-14-2011, 10:21 AM
yeah, i'm pretty much done seeing hip hop acts with just a DJ; Talib being the only exception.

i may buy a tic in the hopes that he's going to be up there with a band backing him. if it turns out it's a just a DJ show, i am sure i can easily sell it.

Was hoping this would be another Cee-Lo / Big Boi show initially. I'd agree a repeat of the Chico Dusty tour doesn't need to be seen twice.

Brad, do you know if the Indy box office will be selling tix to Big Boi today at noon or is it just via Ticketfly? just wondering if you might have heard.

id really doubt he'll have a backing band. He hasn't done any shows with a band since he starting doing solo shows 2 years ago right? He was awesome when I saw him at Rock the Bells, but as others have mentioned the Outkast songs stand out the strongest, but its bittersweet when the better part of that duo isn't there.

Looks like it's sold out. That was surprisingly fast. As a heads up, they have TicketFly printer in the box office, so anything that's on sale online is probably available at the box office, too.

I'm not risking door tickets! I will be anxious until it's in my hand. :)

I don't think so, as it's the last weekend of March, and Low End Theory was to be the first weekends.

I was drunkenly kidding about the mandatory attendance, of course. A lot of good choices for that night, and at the very least we can all get together for drinks before we trek off to the show of our choosing.
