silly indeed. i equate them both to one another so any rep with one is shared with the other. just fucking combine the two already, book good shit and be done with it.

I really liked 103 Harriet. I honestly don't see why anyone wouldn't like it.

Hah. That seems very fair. I'll admit I haven't gone to 1015 since the 90's -- even when there are acts that I would possibly see at another venue -- because it's 1015.

(And yea I realized I was being tricked into going to 1015 by going to 103...)

totally. The intention wasn't to literally trick people into thinking it wasn't the same place, only clue people in that it not the same crowd. Also to some extent it's to hook the younger kids into perceiving that place as "103" right off the bat so they don't fall victim to all the crusty old curmudgeons who tell them "1015 sucks"

jackstraw94086

silly indeed. i equate them both to one another so any rep with one is shared with the other. just fucking combine the two already, book good shit and be done with it.

Separating them does sort of have benefits for the 103 type shows.

The club is huge and a big portion of their business will always be big name trance stuff or hip hop or radio station promotion shows. They make a good deal of money packing in a full club of underage asian kids, or hip hop crowd, or a bridge & tunnel. That's all gravy for them and probably the only way a club that big can stay in business.

It would suck to go to a Daedalus show and find the place packed with some of that crowd (and it would likewise suck for them to pay to get in and not see anything close to what they want to see either).

It's the SF scenester way. We have a rep to uphold and we can't let goofy magnanimity fuck it up.

well, in all fairness...i've only been to 1015 a couple times, both in '08 (Bassnectar & Freeland). have not been to a 103 show yet. so, your point might have some merit. i'll give 103 a shot with this Gaslamp Killer show...i have just got to catch him live so fuck it.

Oh man, I went to 1015 Folsom one night because my silly friend wanted to roll for the first time and THAT is the place she picked. The crowd was spectacular in the worst way possible. I'm glad they separate it up.

I remember 1015 being not that bad at one time, but I was mostly went for Spundae and admittedly was with the bridge & tunnel crowd myself (I hadn't moved here yet, and most of my friends here that could let me stay with them were peninsula people).

It's weird because in my memory it fairly quickly went from being hot to not. (And maybe that was solely a reflection of the company I've kept). Y'all know I don't deny being snobby about venues & clubs.

12-16-2010, 11:37 AM
The time I was there there were pamphlets chronicling the history of 1015 and how it went from being a hot rave spot in the 90s to a current champion of hyphy scene. It was great.

12-16-2010, 11:47 AM
I have to admit that I have a tendency to write off pretty much all 'clubs' that play 'electronic' music as shitty. There is always a (part of the) crowd that puts me off, there is too much craptastic music played, and in decor/setup/staff it always seems like the place is trying way too hard to be cool.

But I'm getting better at ignoring all of grumpy instincts and just having a good time as long as I'm able to dance.

103 Harriet is my favorite club in the city, although I can see why people hate it... I took some friends there for the Ninja Tune party and they were like "My god, that girl is dancing in only her underwear!" It's kind of a crazy scene, especially at the huge parties when the place is full. I love it though, I've had nothing but great times there and I'm stoked on a dope monthly there. I like Jackstraw's explanation of the name distinction, makes a lot of sense.

more on the Low End Theory shows. sounds like it will be a really nice addition to the scene.

Low End Theory Will Bring All Its L.A. Beat Magic to S.F. Next Year (http://blogs.sfweekly.com/shookdown/2010/12/low_end_theory_will_bring_all.php)

Apparently not content with the weekly mindfuck of a party that is Low End Theory, L.A.'s Daddy Kev and his stable of resident and guest DJs/performers will put their now world-famous show on the road once a month for Low End Theory S.F. The first party will be no small affair either, with both Daedelus and Baths headlining.

Low End Theory has turned into one of L.A.s biggest and most influential music parties. It served as a platform for the rise of artists such as Flying Lotus and Gaslamp Killer, and has pulled in acts from every corner of the hip-hop and electronic worlds, including Lazer Sword, the fast-rising hip-hop collective Odd Future, and experimental soundmakers such as Matthewdavid and Oneotrix Point Never.

The first S.F. party will kick off on January 21st at 103 Harriet. In addition to Daedelus and Baths, Daddy Kev, The Gaslamp Killer, Nobody, D-Styles, and Nocando will assume their normal resident roles. According to the blog Dance Fever 5000, the ensuing monthly parties will take place on the first Friday of the month, beginning in March. Mark your calendars now, people. This is no joke.

If you've been to bassnectar there then you've pretty much been to a "103 show". It actually is a decent venue with decent sound although I still hold a fucking grudge against them for shutting off the subs during Si Begg's FIRST and thus far ONLY US show EVER due to a noise ordinance at the time. Fuckers. That noise issue must be over or whoever was doing the complaining must be gone because the last few shows I've been to there were loud as fuck. Amon Tobin's set last month was the fucking loudest fucking thing I've ever heard.

Also the upstairs sound was meticulously tuned by Adam Ohana for bass music (apparently he uses the room for his own personal music production sometimes).

A Winter Carnival and Market This Friday night at CELLspace

CELLspace and Raindance present a winter carnival with all of your favorite folks, gifts under the tree, cookies fresh from the oven and a great assortment of DJs stuffing beats down your stockings all night long…

CELLspace is always glad to make it through another year and we want to party.
Raindance is always ready to party.

However, we want it to be friends telling friends, telling friends.
No flyers to waste paper, litter the streets and get the wrong folks there, just good ol’ word of mouth…

Soooo… please post this to all of your lists and let all of our “friends” know!

We have been running the snow machine all week and it is getting deep. Out of work, Santa’s were hired to set up a winter carnival with games and photo opportunities. In addition, we have stocked a frigid bar with tasty beverages and hot elves to serve them.

The winter streets of Cell will also host an underground craft fair where you are likely to find a freaky gift for that freak in your life or a cheap trinket for that scrooge in your life.

Everyone loves a gift so we will have a huge Christmas tree set up in the main space for a gift exchange. Bring a gift / Take a gift… Only one because Santa knows who has been naughty and who has been nice!

Wrapping the beats in pretty paper will be DJ’s on 2 systems

Jared and I witnessed one of the best displays of show security at the Indy last night. the skinny is that there was a group of really drunk, obnoxious "bros" who were being very rude and inordinately loud (right in front of the band no less). Indy security quietly slipped in behind them and laid down the law. what impressed me was how they did it....with quiet resolve, patience and by winning the battle of wills. the two most drunk ones pulled some shit that resulted in their being escorted out and the other two were publicly shamed so much that they eventually cowered out on their own.

the Indy just keeps getting better and better.

wmgaretjax
12-17-2010, 10:14 AM
yeah. it was really elegant. the bros didn't know what hit them. sucks that they tainted a good 1/3 of the set, but it was almost worth it just to see the shocked looks on their faces.

The Indy really is a great venue. Love the remodel. You know, I was a tiny bit worried the first time I saw it post-remodel, that it might actually change the venue (like the crowd or bookings? It became a little bit posher, you know). But it's wonderful. Need to go to more shows there.

jackstraw94086

I have a fucking bone to pick with the independent. Last time I was there was for pretty lights last spring. They painted the fucking floor with some brown sealant shit and didn't air the place out or give it time to dry properly. Everyone went home with brown streaks on their shoes from people accidentally stepping on each other in the crowd (as you do). ruined an almost new pair of fucking shoes.

EDIT: but kudos to them for finally getting rid of that trough in the mens room. It was too cramped for a trough and there was always the danger of getting back splatter from some drunk schmo.

EDIT2: everyone should go see BLVD there on 1/8 too.

i was at that show. did you happen to get a peek at all the fricking gear that PL brought with him for his lights? took up all of the upstairs area to the right of the soundboard. amazing how he's blown up since then.

(don't remember the floor problems, but do remember getting confirmation of their Coachella appearance from the kid running the lights)

i was just there again for Killing Joke this past Friday and, i'm serious...the sound has been upgraded there. it sounded great that night and for the Sword, Fever Ray and a couple other shows i went to this year that i can't remember at the moment.

i thought fever ray sounded pretty mediocre... the biggest problem isn't the equipment, it's the acoustics. anywhere other than the sweet spot results in all kinds of bounced sound.

GeezrRckr
12-20-2010, 12:32 PM
yeah, acoustics are definitely not optimal there. don't get me wrong...it's not my favorite venue, by any means. but, they've done a decent job of improving the sound with the new gear (before you moved here, it used to be worse!).

one thing's for sure, the bass there is pretty kickass (that's one thing i remember clearly from the FR show). oh, and it's surely better, sound-wise, than fucking Slim's.

jackstraw94086
12-20-2010, 12:36 PM
The grand regency ballroom always sounds like shit. Doesn't matter what kind of music it is. It is the acoustics. The room is just a big cold naked box. The top floor room isn't that bad, but its been a while since I've heard of that room being used.

We danced SO MUCH at the last show, even though the crowd was not very receptive to it.

I still remember, this guy in front of me said to me, "I wish you and your friends wouldn't dance so much." and I said, "I wish you WOULD dance." Eventually he started dancing. We win. :P

As Geezr mentioned (seriously, wasn't that on this thread?) there would have to be some assurance of it being primarily LIVE for me to go to another LoA show. Pretty much everything was prerecorded. Yea, I mean, who knows? Maybe closer to the tour dates, they'll have more info. If there was a promise of a better show, I might be in for it.

It just felt like most of the set was prerecorded with the rest of the band being little more than actors going through the motions. Praga has not aged well. He claims to be in his mid-40s? He looked really old. I've heard he has always shown up for his shows really fucked up, but it was really unattractive on someone his age.

Eric - if you and your wife to see an LoA show, you really should have gone when they were here this year - because TKK was pretty on that night. I felt like I'd gotten my money's worth from the TKK show at least.

Hard Summer was at the Fox, so it's not totally crazy.

Independent shows don't go late. If there is really only one opener for Little Dragon, I'd imagine you'd be out of there before midnight. It would be nice if Mezzanine would post info about that show and the Lindstrom show, I'm considering doubling up for STS9 + Lindstrom.

I hope the lineup drops before Royksopp onsale, so I have a chance to get tickets if they arent playing Coachella.

even if it goes on sale before the lineup is out, Royksopp is not going to sell out that quick.

I'm definitely in for Royksopp and Lykke Li. Also, if I remember correctly, last time Royksopp was here, it didn't sell out until the day of.

Why would there be a presale on the 6th when tickets are onsale today?
$32.33 including fees, for will call. They are doing USPS Priority or Express mail only to deliver tickets, and charging quite a bit for that.

They are selling balcony tickets as well as floor, so really, where is that 2nd room...

Well, if people are interested, we can go to Mezzanine before Ruby Skye (and after, depending on how long Sasha's set is). They aren't too far apart.

true. I thought that did not work well when we did it for vitalic. the transition from dirty bird to vitalic (and whatever that crap was before him) was not good. I kinda wished we had stayed at the dirty bird party.

can't these people talk to each other? bah.

That is kind of pissing me off, actually. There are like 5 nights in the next 6 weeks where I want to do 2 or 3 things all at once. And I'm not much of a champ when it comes to that sort of thing.

GeezrRckr
01-04-2011, 05:10 PM
yes, all these fuckers should be consulting us beforehand. something must be done about this.

yeah, i was going to say not before midnight as well (for Sasha)....if they operate anything like the other venues in town. i have very little experience with RS, though, so can't speak from experience (think i've been there once....for Crystal Method on NYE several years back...anyone else go to that one?).

Headliners at Ruby Skye tend to go on pretty late......atleast 12...I wanna say Benassi went from 1-3 a.m when he played their a few months back

Erika and I were there too, it was NYE 2008. We've been to Ruby Skye a lot; Z-Trip, Bassbin Twins, John Digweed, Mark Farina, Hybrid, Christopher Lawrence, Petal Pusher, TCM, Bjorn Niclas, and Steve Angello.

We're still on the fence regarding Sasha.

ouchie!

the Melvins are a pretty historic band. it's somewhat surprising that you are not aware of them, being that you are in the higher percentile as far as music nerdiness goes. i'd encourage you to come along - because who knows how much longer those guys will be doing what they are doing - but they may be a bit too metal-y for your taste. there is a long list of bands that trace back to the Melvins in one shape or another.

(and having said that, my date may not end up liking them either...i've forewarned him)
