(how are you feeling, btw?)

12-01-2010, 01:08 PM
^^^ Exactly, people make NYE plans weeks in advance, and in this economy, I don't think waiting until a few weeks before NYE is a good move even if they are only looking to sell several hundred tickets.

I'm feeling a little better, thanks, still swollen and way more bruised. Looks like I got into a serious fight.

GeezrRckr

did you just get that from them or are you just repeating what i was translating, what, 2 fucking weeks ago?

Their "working on it" response came on FB yesterday.

Haha, sure. It looks far worse in person though (my camera phone isn't very good at picking up colors -- there is a ~6" spot that is yellowish-green).

I guess if anyone is at the Rickshaw Stop on Friday, I should be easy to spot? Reddish hair, glasses, look like a domestic violence victim?

If you don't mind, what happened? Did you get in a fight on Muni?

chiapet
12-01-2010, 01:45 PM
I had some wisdom teeth taken out last week. Nothing dramatic. :) I am very pale though so my face was extremely swollen and bruised a few days after the procedure. (In retrospect, that bottle of wine on Thanksgiving was a bad idea... my bruises really went wild the next day)

GeezrRckr
12-01-2010, 01:47 PM
aww...nothing a little cover-up won't take care of. the swelling has gone down a bit. almost there. what show on Fri? i'm hitting Roger Waters that night...pretty pumped (although the buddy i'm going with is going through some MAJOR marital drama and i'm afraid that show will turn him into a pity puddle...oy).

EDIT: wait, how did the wine affect that?

chiapet
12-01-2010, 01:53 PM
Hey Champ is Friday. And I'm still thinking of hitting up Josh Wink at Temple.

I'm not sure of the medical reason wine would have made the bruising worse, but it was much worse the next day. I'm guessing thinning blood, increasing blood flow to that area (my cheeks always get very red when I drink - dilated capillaries, I guess)?

It did make me feel better though :)

Edited to add: My makeup skills are so poor that my attempts to cover it up make me look even more like I've been beaten up and am trying to hide it, lol.

Mighty finally posted the link to purchase tickets to their Nosaj Thing Lola benefit show. The tix are being sold for $20, which doesn't jiive with their flier, so I am waiting on a response from them regarding the pre-sale price of $15 before I purchase my tix. Here's the ticketfly link:

http://www.ticketfly.com/tickets/event-details/?tfly_event_id=22345

Edit:

Apparently the pre-sale tix have sold out.

did you buy some in the end? I wonder if it will sell out in advance.

also, I wrote off mighty for NYE when they annouced they are hosting breakfast of champions. is there time to clear out after a NYE party and still be prepared for a 6 am block party the next day?

Yeah, Erika and I have our tickets. Thanks to Mighty's BS, what was supposed to be ~$35 for us was ~$50.

I'm giving Mighty til Dec 6th to finalize their NYE plans. The next price jump is Dec 7th for the Colette City Hall House party, so we'll be making our decision by then.

That's my plan as well (waiting until Sunday or Monday), I am really doubtful Mighty will end up having anything. I wish Sea of Dreams weren't falling apart in terms of potential attendees.

A lot of my friends are talking about doing NOTHING for NYE. Literally. Not that I'd been heavily weighing their opinions into what I was going to do (because they weren't really interested in anything music related).

I believe Salah is also still willing if we can get a group together. And Kylie would like to try if she can swing the cost of the trip/ticket.

I just don't want to end up sitting around doing nothing for NYE. :)

My non-concert going friends always wait to a day or so prior to NYE to finalize their plans. I know Erika and I won't be satisfied with just attending a string of house parties on NYE.

My non-concert going friends always wait to a day or so prior to NYE to finalize their plans.

Mine too or maybe a week before. And it's always house parties with forced dressing up in order to sit at someone's apartment drinking wine and making small talk for 6 hours while fighting away cats and kids who should be in bed.

Kyliediscope

No, he's already said he won't go (too expensive), which is totally understandable. I've just been waiting for him to suggest something else or show any interest in spending it together because for some reason I think of NYE as a 'romantic' holiday.

It could be time to break that habit and have some fun though...

chiapet
12-01-2010, 06:10 PM
I used to think of NYE as a romantic holiday, and can honestly say that every NYE I spend as part of a couple was a disappointment. The guys never lived up to my expectations and were not concerned with any romance further than what was taken to secure a blowjob.

Now, I just plan to have fun and if I get anything more from the night, great. :)

guedita
12-01-2010, 06:17 PM
I don't even want (or need) romance on the actual night, I'd just like a show of interest in wanting to spend it together as a first option. UNREASONABLE.

chiapet
12-01-2010, 06:26 PM
That's totally reasonable, Cara, but I suspect it won't happen unless you make the plans for him. It's a shame he doesn't want to go (I can understand that it's really expensive for someone who's not very interested). Normally I would play up the 'we will feed you substances' until you have fun angle, but I'm a little gunshy about being around him when he's not sober. :D

September actually does have the highest proportion of births out of any other month, by a hair. NYE probably has a hand in that. But not because it's romantic, more likely because of all the alcohol consumed by folks who generally don't drink otherwise.

I'm well aware. I'm a late September birthday, and easily 1/3 of my friends growing up had birthdays within a few weeks of mine.

My dad told me I was a coke baby rather than an alcohol one. Ah, the 70's and parental over-sharing.

12-02-2010, 08:31 PM
There is a (currently hypothetical) time being set aside to sample the excellent beers that San Francisco's bars have to offer. We'd tentatively talked about maybe the weekend of Dec 17.

I think Sub Swara would be AWESOME for dancing after lots of beer. I only say it's a bad idea because, would we make it to Public Works in time? (... zg is across the street, right? It has a Bermuda Triangle effect). Would we drink so much that Cara and I dance in a manner that causes us ridicule and/or ejection from the venue?

guedita

17th sub swara at public works. 18th pub crawl. start early. get 4 or 5 hours of crawling in before hitting dirty bird at public works.

Yeeaaa, I don't think that is a bad thing. The nights (days?) I've started crawls early have mostly ended in shame and ridicule.

However, if we're thinking of going to Sub Swara, that means we'd probably only have like 4-5 hours to drink due to people needing to start late after work? ("only"). Is that going to be enough time to do a "bar crawl"?

strong support for the 17th. we can bar crawl, then if we have not had too much to drink (or perhaps if we have) we can move on to public works.

4-5 hours is plenty of time, but we need to decide a route/map.

this was sparked from a conversation about good beer-drinking places, right? gestalt, monk's kettle, zeitgeist are all walking distance from each other and public works. though monk's kettle is bound to be packed at that time of the week.

toronado is also an obvious choice. and I realized this week that the Page has some good beer drinking. how much walking are we up for? Page -> Toronado -> Gestalt -> Zeitgeist might be good.

And I would also like to take this moment to invite myself to this proposed beer-oriented outing.

self-invite accepted.

chiapet
12-03-2010, 08:32 AM
What about starting at Toronado for those who can come earlier, and heading down to the mission after? We could always check though.

zg could be difficult due to weather. (However, I find bloody marys to be very warming and I have a raincoat?)

Erika and I decided to get Cake tickets for their tour opening show, which is on Valentines Day. Now we'll have something worthwhile to do on that silly holiday.

This will be our first show at the Fillmore since the Butthole Surfers' NYE Eve show in '08.

We drove into the city to buy the tickets from their box office today, which was somewhat of an ordeal due to all of the holiday shoppers trying to negotiate the city in the rain. It was worth it to not have to pay any of the TM fees.

Is anyone planning on going to No Age on Wednesday at The New Parish?

Whoa. Had no idea that was happening. Might have to go.

The Posies killed it tonight. Great show from those guys. Total rockstar moves all over the place. They were awesome. Brendan Benson was really good too...Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow were in his band. Definitely a worthwhile show.

Whoever said Aaron Axelsen was an enjoyable dj, and I think it was Geez, can suck it. That guy fucking killed every vibe in between every single Spookfest Set. I was like, "BOOO!!!!"

I said that. he usually is pretty good, at least in the context of dj-ing between acts at a small place like the rickshaw stop or mezzanine. was not so good at spookfest, however, I will agree with you there.

hey guys,

this is kind of off topic but I thought you'd know. I'm trying to throw a party a couple months from now and I'm looking for a good venue in SF... basically a dive bar/small club with a legit DJ set up and soundsystem. Not funktion one legit but good enough for a solid party. also ideally they have cheap(ish) drinks because my friends are cheapskates but it's not required. if you know of such a place, let me know :D

You'll have to define "legit DJ set up". I think you'll be relaxing your standards before the end. Most bars/small clubs don't have much more than a couple mackie 450's and a sub. For a small party that's probably plenty.
what part of town are you trying to throw this party in?

anywhere within SF, it doesn't really matter. and yeah, a system of that type would be fine, i just mean something more than a jukebox connected to some bose speakers on the ceiling. working turntables and a mixer would be nice as well :D

That sucks. I feel your pain. I used to have some, but while in college we bought a huge glass dinning table but cut down the legs and used it as a coffee table. Then we put all the good flyers underneath the glass as decoration. It was pretty cool and had some of the best parties or flyers including some from Europe. Of course when we went to pull them off the table the tape fucked them up and they were all shot. At that point in time I stopped collecting them.

My wife collected a bunch so we still have some. I'm sick of moving them from place to place but one of these days we will bust them out and have a good laugh/cry.

And Sasha definitely brings back memories. He and Digweed used to play in Gainesville, Florida all the time at this club called Simons. They even released a cd from one of the nights there called Independence Day back in 1996. That was our local college club - University of Florida, which due to having an owner with good taste in music, we would get lucky and have national acts there all the time. Hell, at certain periods of time Keoki and DJ Ani - from Deee-lite were the resident house djs.

I'm not sure what the Elephant 6 thing will end up being, but I think you understand the premise? "Most" of the members of the bands listed (and also bearing in mind there is some overlap between bands) performing songs from the bands from the collective.

It could be stellar or just so-so. I can't imagine how it would be /bad/.

Ah, I see. 525 Harrison is also known as The factory. I've never been there, but will be spending this NYE there. Apparently it is a 20k square foot location, with 3 rooms, an outdoor smoking section and bar(s). I've heard that is often +18 to get in.

Only evidence I can find, and it doesn't actually show him DJing that much, but I KNOW he's got history as a DJ. A friend of mine had a poster of a bunch of DJs on it, and Talib was pictured.

I'm not sure who comprises MBM this time around (other than Dangers I mean), but I saw them in 2008 and it was fun. He toured with 3 other folks, I think (drums, synths, someone doing visual/video). The visuals were a lot better/more than I expected, having never seen them before. Some of it was a little cheesy though. They sounded good and IIRC played for about 2 hours.

It wasn't 'great' but I think that was mostly due to the place being very crowded and the show was at Slim's and I have a real problem with that venue.

You know his previous album was supposedly a bit dubstep-y, right? Just thought I'd warn you. (I don't see it that way but it's been categorized as such).

I'm thinking about going, think I would enjoy a show at Mezz much more. But that's a rough week for me so I can't commit to it yet.

It's mostly a "him", in the sense that Dangers is the driving force and the only original member. Though their drummer has been with them for 10+ years now.

And they were around in the 80s if we're going to really nitpick :)

Edited: I shouldn't downplay Lynn (drummer), he is excellent.

What don't you like about 103 fikus?

An-ten-nae is taking a number of measures to change the setting of the club. The last time I was there, it was significantly a different vibe. Incredibly chill security, beds to lay down on, and now they're going to be remodeling some more and going to put in a better soundsystem. Things are looking better for this place.

edit: true that geez.

yeah, if you're been there, upstairs there's a room that has two stripper poles off to the left when you walk in from the stairs of the front room. the entire space from the poles to the benches on the wall were filled with mattresses. with soft fuzzy comforters. smoked a j on there and no one cared, with security walking by and everything.

It may have been a one time thing, but it was a nice touch.

I think the difference between 1015 and 103 is the combination of rooms that are open for each "venue."

I was wondering the same thing before Mr. Oizo. If you had bought your tickets in advance you entered from the side street (103 Harriet), if you needed to buy a ticket you entered fromt eh main street (1015 folsom).

There is a door that connects them in the middle. I really liked 103 Harriet and will for sure be back there after seeing Oizo.

There is no functional difference between 1015 and 103 Harriet. In most cases the front door on Folsom is the entrance for either, and it has little bearing on what rooms are open except that generally 103 Harriet shows might tend to be smaller and thus have fewer rooms open. According to Adam Ohana, who manages both, it's just a promotion thing. "1015" is for higher profile (read: mainstream) shows or more generic club events. "103 Harriet" was created more or less to get around the 1015 stigma. It's for more of Adam's own personal promotion events and others that are in the same vein.

Basically 103 is generally targetting a different crowd than 1015, which casts a pretty broad net. 1015 is mean to be the kind of place where you might wind up without plans (i.e. if a bridge & tunnel crew were on their way up to SF and thought about hitting 1015, they wouldn't see any events listed that night).

Somewhat pretentious and silly? perhaps. But nobody can deny that 1015 has a bit of a gross reptuation.

chiapet
12-16-2010, 10:18 AM
Hah. That seems very fair. I'll admit I haven't gone to 1015 since the 90's -- even when there are acts that I would possibly see at another venue -- because it's 1015.

(And yea I realized I was being tricked into going to 1015 by going to 103...)
