Why had they moved it from Bill Graham in the first place? It wasn't a very good venue, but at least it's central and easy to get to with public transit.

I'd actually been thinking about calling in some teenaged cousins for NSSN this year, but there's no way I'm going to San Jose with a carload of kids.

Not So Silent Night Lineup...

http://live105.radio.com/2010/11/01/not-so-silent-night-2010-lineup/

Pumpkins
My Chemical Romance
Phoenix
The Black Keys
Broken Bells

HP Pavilion Dec 10

Pretty good lineup, would've rather had another act besides My Chemical Romance though. I'm stoked about it being in SJ, a lot closer to Santa Cruz.

Nervous Cop is only playing the California shows. And 2 of the guys in Nervous Cop should already be touring with Deerhoof. So it would be odd for them to not do Nervous Cop for the whole tour, unless the added guests were key to the performance...

i'm thinking mostly of Joanna...but, really, how could they even play their stuff without her? this is quite intriguing.

EDIT: Brad, most of those dates you posted in the shows thread show them w/Nervous Cop, not just CA. what gives?

Lots of us in SF have no car... it is pretty much impossible to get to venues in the south bay without a car, whereas it's not difficult at all to get to Bill Graham on public transit.

Off the top of my head, I cannot think of any act that would make me rent a car and drive all the way to SJ.

isn't the hp pavilion across the street from the caltrain station? lol, pretty sure.

Regardless, let's be realistic, it is NOT even close to impossible. Yeah, you could find reasons that it may not be ideal, but 'pretty much impossible' is silly.

Okay you got me - I forgot that there is a caltrain station like 1/4 mi away.

So (for example for me) that still means a 30-45 min bus ride, followed by either a 10 minute train ride or 20 minute walk to Caltrain, followed by a 60-75 minute Caltrain ride.

And since the last train back to SF leaves San Jose at 10:30PM on Fridays, as I have already explained, it IS actually fucking impossible to take public transit to a show of this type in San Jose.

Unless you think that over 4 hours public transit round trip -- to leave the show before 10:30 is reasonable.

I stand by my statement that there is nothing that could provide me with sufficient incentive to go to a show there :)

zimmy1222

lol, you wouldn't go see Prince if he only played @ the HP Pavilion up here? Fair enough.

Oh, you would?

Hm, how would you get there? It's fucking impossible, you say? Damn.

(btw, i said nothing about public transit being possible or impossible, i just said it was NOT impossible to get to San Jose without your own vehicle, nor did i say anything about reasonability, I did say that it would probably be less than ideal. Which is what you're saying, so... nice one)

Actually, I would not go see Prince at the HP Pavilion. The idea of such an occurrence is soul-destroying. I hate the place in addition to it being very inconveniently located.

Mind you, I'm not supporting Bill Graham either, and haven't been to NSSN in years. :)

I do wish Caltrain ran reasonable hours on the weekend/nights -- both for me to get to stuff down there and for you guys to have better options to come up here. I wouldn't go to the HP fucking Pavilion, but maybe I would visit my friends more often. ;)

As it is, you have to either bail very early or be prepared to spend the night with someone. We used to say that of Oakland too (that you had to have close friends in the east bay or be willing to sleep around), but at least BART runs after midnight and AC transit has some service all night.

Yea, the commuting to shows thing is more of a "The SF thread" sort of topic, that's overtalked anyway. I just am becoming resentful that the Live 105 shows *could* be good and always fall flat due to a combination of poor venue, poor booking, insanely long security lines and/or crappy crowds.

Impossible is still an overstatement - vta runs a night bus, along the 22 route, and samtrans runs a night bus from palo alto to the city and vice-versa.

A royal pain in the ass, totally unjustified except in extreme circumstances? yes. impossible, no.

It's not so impossible! :-D

Back when I lived in Santa Cruz, I used to go to shows in San Jose and take the 2Am Amtrak bus back over the hill. I also once stayed at a hotel downtown so I could see Simon & Garfunkel.

But ... navigating around the bay after midnight is a pain, and not to be done on a whim.

I've seen a total of two shows there (S&G, Leonard Cohen). The acoustics were fine; it seems like a nice venue for a large show. It's a hell of a lot better than the Shoreline, which is its only real competition in the south bay.

So a great weekend of shows to finish up a great month of shows.

Janelle Monae/Of Montreal at the Warfield was phenomenal. I can't say enough about the sound in that place. That was probably the best sounding venue I have been to in a long time. Really strong bass and very well mixed. Janelle Monae was much stronger than the All shook down show. The band was tight until the end when it seemed like they ran out of gas. They played for close to an hour, so it felt like almost seeing a double headlining set. Of Montreal have really gotten stronger as a live band. That was the tightest I have ever heard them play, and I have seen them 4 times before. And the fucking bass on Pleasure Puss was throbbing my pleasure puss! I can't wait to see another show at the Warfield because it just sounded so good. Plus I found a great cheap sushi place nearby which will be in the mix for the next show. The only thing that I can complain about at the Warfield was the $7 beers. A person can go broke going to all these shows. Next time, I might have to smuggle in some bourbon or something.

So we tried to get into the Ninjatune party at 12 when Of Montreal was over, but there was a line around the block. That sucked, but at least I didnt pay for a ticket and we were able to catch the last train home to East Bay. I can't complain, although my roommate said he saw Kid Koala and he was world class. But I did see Koala about a year ago do a headline set, so its not that big of a loss.

Gorillaz on Saturday were great as well. That was the most enthused stadium crowd that I have ever seen (not including jamband shows where everyone seems just too excited). I got some of the cheap seats and they were still great seats. The sound was pretty good there too but not up to the Warfield level. I can't wait to see Roger Waters there in a couple months. Again, expensive beers in the club level, $12 24 ounce good beers, but at least I could drink some good beers instead of drinking swill. Gotta love the Bay!

I hope that everyone else had a rocking month of shows. My month definitely ended well, after starting with a lackluster Flaming Lips show to start off the month. I'm definitely taking the month of November off from shows, while my body and bank account recovers. Next stop a December to Remember and Primus Sucks!

I was planning on visiting again in a month, but as they are wont to do, plans have changed on me and now I have a pair of tickets to sell < cost for both Einstürzende Neubauten shows. That's 12/3 @ the Filmore & 12/4 @ Slim's. So if anyone knows of anyone looking for tickets to either of those, I'll cut them a deal that'd be better than buying from the box office, and we could do some legit eBay transaction so it wouldn't be some shady deal with some dude with 300 posts on a message board. :) Just throwing it out there before I try and push them elsewhere.

DJ Food's set was all over the place. Basically a best hits remix tour through the catalogue. I think I counted 3 different remixes of Terrorist.
I loved the whole fucking set.

I wasn't so much into Toddla T.
Apparently he's been a nightmare on this tour. Word has it they had to have hotel staff dismantle the door to his room that morning in NY and physically drag him out of bed to get him on his plane to SF.

Ahaha I totally forgot Ill Gates played. I was on drugs, I seriously got lost in 1015. I was trying to find my friend and I kept walking through the wrong door and ending up on the opposite side of the club from where I wanted to be. Ive never been to 103 before but know that i need to go for oizo. how does 103 work? if i buy tickets before hand can i just show up whenever i want and walk in? does anyone have any kind of guess as to when he will come on? if i get there later on will i have any issues with seeing/hearing/being a part of his set?

sorry for the laundry list of ?s but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, like most places in the city they have will-call. Headliners come on around 11:30/midnight. It's a club, you won't have a problem hearing his set or seeing it.

I had a blast catching Dada Life at Motiv in Santa Cruz last night. Can't go wrong catching them in my home town at my favorite nightclub. The low point of the night though was having some guy throw up on me. I tried to get out of the way in time as I saw it coming, but wasn't successfull =(. Next up: Brandon Flowers.

I don't think it will be an issue. I don't know what late means to you, but showing up @11:30-1:00 might get you in a little line, but it shouldn't sell out, most an-ten-nae shows don't @ 103. Especially since it's not advertised as a 1015 party.

I didn't go, which I'm pretty bummed about. I did make it out to Public Works last night for the first time, and I think it's a great venue. The sound system is LOUD....louder than Mighty, I think, and the visuals looked great. I actually enjoy that there's a little art gallery to check out. I'm definitely looking forward to going there again, I only stayed for a little over an hour.

What the fuck, a Latyrx show? That's awesome. Full report please.

Yes it was awesome. Not sure what percentage of the crowd fully appreciated the rareness of this duo performing live. Im a little fuzzy about the Jazz Mafia in terms of the structure; I know there's the Shotgun wedding Quintet, The 30 piece(?!) Realistic Orchestra, Brass Mafia and I know Dublin (shotgun wedding) does solo stuff too, so is there an actual Jazz Mafia band or is that just their big "umbrella" and all the groups, combos, etc fall under that Jazz Mafia umbrella? Regardless they all sounded great.

They somehow set up their 30 piece Realistic Orchestra on the Mezzanine stage, quite impressive which was the live band for Latryx. Lyrics Born came out first and they did a song from his new album (which is pretty incredible) and then they did "Over You." Its one of my favorite LB songs and I know he doesnt usually perform live. I like it because I know its a beautiful duet between he and Joyo Velarde who is actually his wife. It's not a big secret, but some are surprised to learn that. Anyways I dig the shit out of the song, but Joyo was not there to sing her part, some lady from the backing orchestra sang her part, so that was a little bitter sweet.

Then Lateef came out and they went into "Lady Don't Tek No" and the crowd ate it all up! They sounded awesome together even though they actually rap over each other for some of their songs. Sounded very strong and powerful with the orchestra backing them up, that aspect was so cool. They ended their set with "Last Trumpet." I know the phrase "epic" is overused quite often, but that song being performed by a 30 piece orchestra WITH LB+Lateef most certainly was! I had an excellent time.

TED likely paid them a handsome sum. what's strange/sad is how poorly it has been selling (i got this from the FunCheap newsletter).

OFWGKTA canceled their show on friday. Sad face, I was going to use this show as an excuse to visit my Bay area amigos.

Domo was supposed to be there too. Oh well, they'll play SF soon, they have lots of friends up there. They usually don't announce shows any earlier than 2 weeks before, and their twitter is usually more reliable than their site for news like this.

I just shocked myself by having a glint of interest in going to this show upon seeing it. What is happening to me?

You want to be my friend, clearly.

Last time Gui Boratto was here my stupid friend ate a brownie and was too paranoid about guys trying to dance sexually with her that we had to leave before he even came on. NO ONE WAS DANCING ANYWHERE NEAR HER. And I'm still bitter.

12/14 Sir Arnes Treasure (movie) with The Mountain Goats in Solo Performance @ Castro Theater SF

I guess Darnielle composed the score, anyone ever been to one of these newly scored films with the live band? I know Yo La Tengo and Superchunk and Jonathan Richman have done it there with different movies, I'm just wondering if its only the score or if he'll play some of his other material

edit: http://sffs.org/content.aspx?pageid=1961
there's a description

I saw Black Francis perform his score to Der Golem at the Castro and they played ONLY that.

Your friends seem to have some serious problems with attempting to use any drugs at shows.

Mighty isn't shiny enough for NYE, honestly, but if the acts are dope then I'll consider it

If you're about to cross a price tier for something else you're interested in you might be advised to not wait for Mighty.

I'm not even advocating SoD here. Just trying to save some folks a few bucks and some disappointment.

I seriously don't know of anything besides Further, Primus, and SoD. Kind of a wack selection IMO.

SoD doesn't look that great in the lineup, but I think I'm still planning on doing that for NYE. I just don't trust that Mighty is going to pull out something that feels big enough for NYE.

11-16-2010, 11:41 AM
Right now my options are SoD or staying at home with my cats and refusing to go to a stupid bar with a cover and bad music playing because my boyfriend didn't plan anything until the very last minute.

we are doing NYE at Disneyland again. It's perfect, except for having to heard BEP's "Good Night" dozens of times, which happened last year

I'm having trouble committing too. Though if you really like SoD's lineup, I don't think you'll find anything better for NYE. The set-up/decorations/performance art aspect are really nice.
