Classic Tijuana

Agua Caliente Racetrack
I started going there when I was 15. My buddy who was 16 and could drive would take me down to the border after high school and we’d either hire a cab or courtesy limo to the track. What was once a historic horse racing track, the greyhound racing at Agua Caliente Racetrack was the traditional first stop in our south-of-the-border romps. We would arrive and immediately be escorted past the very fat lions (who allegedly were fed the losing dogs) straight into the VIP level. As long as you had $10 and were tall enough to reach the betting window, they would let you in. It was a 10,000 sq feet luxury suite with bottle and 5 star service for just us and a few other high-rollers who came to bet the greyhounds.

http://media.news.com.au/travel/lp/images/BN2986_1.jpg

We knew nothing about the actual greyhounds, but we knew everything about pari-mutuel betting. Sometimes the entire win, place, or show pool would be less than $100 and several dogs would have no money bet on them at all. We’d wait until about 30 seconds before each race and place our bets on the dogs that had little-to-no money bet on them at all. At least once a night, we’d hit and win the entire pool or split a large chunk of it.

Jai Alai Palace
We’d usually head on down to the Jai-Alai Palace on Avenida Revolución, Tijuana to parlay our winnings. Again, we’d be treated to the VIP section, but at the Jai-Alai Palace, we’d always be propositioned by Mexico’s shadiest who were clearly trying to fix the games. More often than not, due to the length of the games, we hardly placed any wagers, but still enjoyed one of the most intense live-sports you could imagine as a teenager.

Revolución
After Jai Alai was either a quick stroll or taxi ride back up Avenida Revolución to the clubs. We almost always started at Escape if coming from the South or Iguanas coming straight from the Border. Club A and The Caves were always on our list too. Late to the scene was Safari. I think we were there for opening night. All clubs had like $7 all you can drink or something like that. There was also a club where on the second level they had pretty good live shows from the states. Anyone remember the name? It was pretty much like Casbah South.

The walk back
You gotta love a stumble back through Zona Río on the way back to the border. Luckily my friend Dave always volunteered to be the DD and luckily US didn’t check your age coming back across the border back then, but the walk north pretty much resembled a trot through Napoli in the movie Gomorra. But the tacos made it worth it

Who knows what we were doing. I remember one night we were down there for some big election and the Mexican Army was rolling up and down the streets with soldiers in the back of pickups firing away into the sky in celebration.

As long as you didn't pass out in the street or didn't get into fights we were treated just fine.

Very nice write-up.

They don't play Jai Alai in that stadium anymore, right?

I saw it a few years ago, peeped through the window, and saw just a bunch of BS about movies or other crap going on there.

Oh TJ. Can't beat all you can drink for $5 and music all night followed by 3 tacos for $1 at the age of 18. Witnessed a lot of crazy shit down there.

-kissing and sucking on stripper's titty when my buddy interrupted saying "she's pregnant". Looked down and she was indeed at least eight months preggos. Can you get std from breast milk? Prolly.
-Buddy passionately (with eyes closed) made out with a dude he thought was a chick resulting in a lifetime razz.
-Dancing sensually on the strobe light floor with all the prostitutes at the Chicago Club
-Offering $10 to watch her piss and she curiously refusing
-Got gum put in my hair by a tranny for refusing to take 'her' up to a room. Only noticed later in the night. Bitch.
-Quest for donkey sex shows
-Friend was boning a prostitute when she pulled his cock out of her puss and shoved it in her asshole. He just rolled with it.
-The blond girl from Mexico City at the high end strip club who I'll always remember. At least her body anyway. She was so beautiful.
-Two nights in jail. Hope you like runny beans and rice. And men.

When we going again?

Let's talk about the drug runner who's skin from his head was found wrapped around a soccar ball along with a message on his forehead a couple of months ago.

This is the place to retire.

Nice write up Playa.

My memories of TJ include one crazy night at Safari's 7 years ago and a few day trips during college to score some Rx pills. Haven't been across the border in a few years. The only thing I miss are the churros.

I also have a friend who is addicted to Adelita's and Hong Kong gentleman's club.

I lived in SD circa 2002, and then went about 5 years before I went back, and my old neighbor had to explain to me how the old Teeyay just isn't the option it used to be. It was truly sad to hear.

Yea, I haven't been back since it turned. In fact, I don't really have a reason to even go to Rosarito anymore. Rosarito was fine in college and even after, but we went one last time 3 years ago and it was frightening, even near our gated rental home there were seedy characters. It's a shame. We had 3 different people stop by to 'repair the water heater'.

But back to TJ. Stories like this is what it's all about.

I remember live shows at Iguana's, but at the other end of Revolución close to Escape and the Jai Alai Palace was a club that was primarily a concert venue. It may have been open just a few years, but I do remember seing all the 91X natives play there one time or another.

Great thread. When I was like 12 years old going to TJ was better than going to Disneyland. My brother and I would buy switchblades, homemade m-80s, brass knuckles, bullwhips and other weapons to play around with. And I'll always love the dog-dogs.

I have a couple of TJ stories also and I guess I am lucky just to be alive after those little jaunts ..... I already told how I shut down the gates on the boarder .... I know it is dangerous down there now a bunch, but TJ has always been on the edge for us young americans that went down there to party .... cr*****

And I'll always love the dog-dogs.

My friend who’s the biggest instigator around had a foreign exchange student staying with him who also happened to be the son of some foreign diplomat. On the way back to the border with dog-dogs in hand, he was testing his friends diplomatic immunity (or lack there of) with every TJ cop we passed by. One of many nights we were all lucky not to land in jail.

The stories are endless. Walking through the border, we were in that no-mans land with non-reversible gates at both ends and exactly where the lack of smell in the US ends and the smell of Mexico beings, we saw a dozen Federalies hiding behind pillars with guns drawn looking up towards the US. We turned back and here comes the end of a high-speed chase down the 5. All gates have 1 or 2 cars waiting to go into Mexico except one that's clear but has a metal barrier sticking up in the middle. The clown who's being chased by the CHP chooses the lane with the metal barrier at 80mph?, flips the car upside down as he crosses into Mexico and within seconds is dragged out of the car, Pistol Whipped by the Federalies, and taken away.

Tasty. Possible explosive diarrhea for the following 2 days but well worth it.

You can find a painting or a blanket of just about anything/anyone.

As much fun as it can be out there, its still pretty dangerous. You can be killed, raped, kidnapped.

I don't think its as bad as the media says. Street vendors have almost all shut down because of the lack of tourism. We should have a coachella board meet up on Revolucion!

As fun as that might sound, no. It is as bad as they say. Go down there and hang out at night time in the clubs. Lets see where your kidneys go in the morning.

Tijuana is fine. the media portrayal is way overblown. kind of sad really because the people are hurting from the lack of tourism. also doesn't help that you need a passport to get back into the states now.

burros actually.

Here's how my friend would get oxycontin: Go to the taco shop under the stairs just as you get across the pedestrian bridge. He would proceed to order 4 tacos, 2 pacificos, and 5 "eighties". 80's meant 80mg pills. The food would arrive along with the pills hidden in folded up bottle caps.

For the record, I've only done oxy three times. The rest of my friends who were into that shit ended up getting addicted to heroin because it was cheaper.

i've witness first hand what an H addiction does. terrible terrible stuff. i guess the only solace i got out of it was that i have more sympathy for junkies now than before. truly crushing. :(

i'm very thankful that opiates are a take-it-or-leave-it thing for me. but i can see how they can be so seductive. the light in my head never turned on though....
